‘Breaking Bad’ fans discover Albuquerque

A

lbuquerque, NM (August 2012) – Now in its fifth and final season, the Emmy-winning show Breaking Bad is generating a new visitor audience for Albuquerque, New Mexico. The popular AMC show is set and filmed in Albuquerque, and is drawing attention to the

destination. New Mexico’s aggressive film incentives have brought film and television crews to the state for several years. Production companies can receive up to 25 percent tax rebates on production costs when filming in our state, which helped attract Sony Pictures Television to Albuquerque five years ago. As the story of Breaking Bad has progressed, the city of Albuquerque has become a significant “character” in the show. “Albuquerque itself has become a character in our show. A really important character,” said Bryan Cranston, who plays Walter White, in a recent radio interview. “It gave it a justifiable location. A sound, solid place that not many people have related to. They’ve seen Los Angeles, they’ve seen New York, but they haven’t really seen Albuquerque and New Mexico.” As we approach the 2012 Emmys, Albuquerque will be front and center with Breaking Bad’s 13 nominations including best drama series and acting nominations for Bryan Cranston (Walt), Aaron Paul (Jesse), Giancarlo Esposito (Gus) and Anna Gunn (Skyler). Self-guided location map The Albuquerque Convention and Visitors Bureau has compiled a snapshot of film locations along with nearby attractions to help visitors discover what Albuquerque is really about: 300+ years of history, diverse arts and culture, delectable New Mexican cuisine, spectacular weather and abundant outdoor recreation opportunities. The self-guided interactive map helps visitors explore a variety of Breaking Bad film locations in tandem with Albuquerque attractions. The map is easy to navigate and offers more than a carwash or burrito restaurant for those that want to see the film locations firsthand, but also discover what the city is about. Tourism partners are also getting on board with the Breaking Bad hype. The Albuquerque Trolley Company is now offering 3.5-hour Breaking Bad location tours around Albuquerque on a regular basis. The tours are typically sold out within a day of being announced. “We are seeing a younger demographic than our typical visitors contacting us and taking our tours because they found out about Albuquerque through Breaking Bad,” said Jesse Herron, co-owner of the ABQ Trolley Co.

“People from around the world have connected with our city because of the show’s popularity,” said Michael Silva, ABQ Trolley Co. co-owner. Many of the actors have chosen to live part-time in Albuquerque and have enjoyed experiencing the same things visitors come for – outdoor recreation, scenic views, great food and weather. View comments about the city on the website. “Film projects like Breaking Bad and blockbusters movies like The Lone Ranger and Terminator Salvation bring money into our city,” said Dale Lockett, President/CEO of the Albuquerque Convention and Visitors Bureau. “Those that are set here can help us dispel misperceptions about our area. The beautiful landscape shots show the gorgeous Sandia Mountains and other vistas that pique the interest of viewers.” “We are reaching a new potential visitor audience that may not have considered Albuquerque for vacation in the past through shows like Breaking Bad. People want to come here and see the actual locations where the filming is taking place,” Lockett said. Albuquerque and New Mexico have strong film history. In addition to Breaking Bad, a snapshot of recent film projects includes the upcoming Lone Ranger, In Plain Sight, The Avengers, The Book of Eli, Terminator Salvation, Crazy Heart and many more. Stay tuned for more developments on Breaking Bad and other film tourism promotions in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Tips For Parents Juggling College, Career And Family

B

alancing work and family is a familiar challenge for many parents, but when you add college classes to the mix it can become a real juggling act. According to the Institute for Women’s Policy Research, parents of dependent children comprise nearly a quarter (3.9 million) of America’s 17 million college students and half of those (1.9 million) are single parents. For many college-bound parents, career success depends on advancing their education and refreshing their job skills. “Today’s careers are longer and more complex than in the past,” says Dr. Tracey WilenDaugenti, vice president and managing director of Apollo Research Institute. “Continuing education is critical to staying employable over a career that may last 50 to 60 years and require 10 or more job changes.” But don’t rush back to college if you don’t have a clear purpose or plan for managing your time. Apollo Research Institute surveyed more than 4,400 adult students and found that 56 percent experience anxiety over not spending enough time with friends and loved ones. Here are some tips to help college-going parents stay the course: •Seek a program with flexible class scheduling. Evening classes, online learning or hybrid programs that combine online and oncampus classes are designed for working adults. •Look for programs that use innovative

technologies. By building technology skills, you will increase your value to an employer. •Don’t underestimate the time you’ll need to complete assignments outside of class. Ask faculty and fellow students about time requirements. •Talk with your employer about your goals and educational plan; explore tuition-assistance programs that your company may offer. •Explore resources that your college may provide, such as work-life balance consultants to help you locate child care and manage your time. •Engage your children in your learning process by taking them to the library or setting up shared space to do homework together. Dialogue with your kids about what you are learning and the role education plays in your lives. •Read up on the financial impact of earning a degree. According to Apollo Research Institute, college goers who obtain a degree while employed can expect to increase their salary and

lifetime income and earn on average a 22 percent return on their tuition dollars. The return is higher for graduates in high-demand fields such as engineering (53 percent), IT (49 percent), business (43 percent) and nursing (36 percent). •Consider earning a certification if you are not sure about a degree program. Certifications are respected and increasingly required in industries such as manufacturing and IT. Learn more at www.apolloresearchinstitute. org. (NAPSI)—

Deadline Extended For Free Foreclosure Review

T

here’s good news for some victims of foreclosure. They now have until December 31 to request a free review and could receive compensation if errors are found. Ordered by federal bank regulatorsthe Office of the Comptroller of the Currency and the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System-consultants will review each file to identify borrowers who suffered financial injury as a result of foreclosure errors. Where financial injury is found, regulators have directed mortgage servicers to fix the errors and provide compensation or other remedy. Regulators are overseeing the reviews and will approve plans to compensate affected borrowers. Can I Request a Review? To be eligible, the mortgage must have been in the process of foreclosure in 2009 or 2010, involve your primary residence, and serviced by one of the companies listed at independentforeclosure review.com. You do not need to have lost your home to participate. What Kind of Errors Result in Financial Injury? Some examples include: • Foreclosing in violation of the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act or

federal bankruptcy laws; • Foreclosing on a borrower not in default; • Failing to convert a qualified borrower to a permanent modification after successfully completing a written trial plan; • Foreclosing prior to expiration of a written payment plan, while the borrower was meeting the terms of that plan; • Rejecting a loan modification application that should have been approved; • Charging a higher interest rate in a loan modification than should have been charged; and • Failing to provide proper notification during foreclosure. What Could I Get? In June, regulators published possible compensation. For certain errors, compensation may include

payments from $500 for smaller errors involving improper fees to $125,000 plus equity for the worst cases involving the loss of the home. Other remedies may include suspending or rescinding a foreclosure, reimbursing fees, modifying a mortgage loan and correcting credit reports. How Can I Participate? Borrowers can check eligibility and request a review at indepen dentforeclosurereview.com or call (888) 952-9105 to request a form and return it by mail. How Long Do Reviews Take? More than 225,000 people have requested a review. Reviews are detailed and will take several months to complete. Not all foreclosures involve errors and not all errors lead to compensation. You give up nothing by requesting a review and do not waive any rights to additional action by accepting compensation through this program. Remember, reviews are free, fair and impartial. Get more information at independentforeclosurereview. com or www.occ.gov/ independentforeclosurereview, from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, a bureau of the U.S. Department of the Treasury.. --NAPSI
