LBUQUERQUE NM- No one knows what the actual temperatures will be on the weekend of September 15th and 16th, but we do know the level of heat will be high at two major events in Albuquerque that weekend when back-to-back events featuring chiles will take place. OLD TOWN SALSA FIESTA First in the ‘hottest weekend’ events is the highly popular and FREE Old Town Salsa Fiesta on Saturday, September 15th. Featuring a highly competitive Homemade Salsa contest, live salsa music and dance, and fun activities for kids, the Salsa Fiesta draws thousands of visitors to the Old Town area each year. The event kicks off at 1 p.m. as entrants in the Homemade Salsa Competition begin preparing their secret recipes. The aroma of cooking chile will draw in the crowd to watch the preparations. Salsa tasting will take place from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Visitors may purchase a wristband for $5 that allows them to taste as many of the homemade salsas as they want, then vote for their favorite. The top three winners receive cash awards. Live salsa music on the Plaza will include performances by Mala Maña, Havana Son Cuban Salsa, Charanga Del Valle, and En-Joy Salsa Band. The 11-piece ‘salsa dura’ sensation La Excelencia will close the event. Salsa dancing to ‘hot’ music will be a great way to spend the day. Visitors to the event are encouraged to take public transportation to take in all of the events of the afternoon and evening, which will include the opportunity to shop and dine in historic Old Town. Old Town, New Fun, a program that presents many events in Old Town and works year-round to support the continued success of Albuquerque’s historic treasure, is part of the Cultural Service Department, City of Albuquerque, Richard J. Berry, Mayor. For more information on this or other events, please call 311 or visit www.OldTownABQ.org. TTY users call 711. SANDIA GREEN CHILE FESTIVAL On Sunday, September 16th from 11 a.m. - 7 p.m. the first ever Sandia Green Chile Festival will be held at the Albuquerque International Balloon Museum. Presented by O’Hare Serna Farms and the Balloon Museum, the event is a celebration of New Mexico’s famous green chile industry. O’Hare Serna Farms, a local chile farm located near Peralta, is actively engaged in supporting the return to a completely localized market for green chile. In the past few years the chile growers of New Mexico have faced significant out-of-state and international competition, and this event is designed to engage the public in the revitalization of the local chile market. Featured entertainment includes the Squash Blossom Boys, Felix & Los Gatos, JezzLaWeez, the Buckarettes, Le Chat Lunatique and more. With educational presentations by experts, the event will combine entertainment and learning opportunities in a relaxed, fun atmosphere. Purchase the best of the best, fresh roasted green chile here! A number of local vendors will offer delicious chile-themed food, with local breweries offering a variety of micro-brewed beers. Cooking demonstrations and chile roasting will add to the

Defined Publishing, Inc. 2012

experience. A KidsZone with face painting and inflatable jumpers will be part of the fun, as will interactive exhibits on farming, chile and farm-to-table eating. Inside the Balloon Museum will be educational programming and the opportunity to tour the entire museum and enjoy the many fascinating exhibits on display. Tickets are only $7 per person (includes admission to the Museum) for a great afternoon of entertainment and focus on famous New Mexico green chiles. Children 12 and under attend at no charge. Practice Preventive Vehicle Maintenance

P

reventive maintenance is critical for keeping vehicles operating at optimum levels,” says car-care expert Tricia Hecker, Head of Marketing for Mopar. To help, here are 10 items to check on your vehicle: 1. Brakes: Check pads, shoes, rotors, drums, calipers, wheel cylinders, brake hardware and the parking brake for wear and tear. 2. Tires: Closely inspect the tread and sidewall areas of tires for uneven or irregular wear. Correct air pressure helps prevent premature wear and supports fuel economy. Check the spare, too. 3. Battery: Check for corroded terminals and a bulging or cracked case. Test and replace battery if necessary. 4. Headlamps and Taillamps: Inspect and test all lamps to ensure proper function and alignment. 5. Shocks and Struts: Shocks and struts are the most overlooked service parts on a vehicle, but they affect ride control and comfort and can affect a number of related parts. 6. Engine Oil: Be sure it has the correct viscosity. Engine oil should be changed or replenished at factory-recommended intervals. Low or dirty fluids affect how an engine and its components perform and could cause engine damage. 7. Fluid Levels: All vehicle fluids and lubricants should be checked and changed at factory-recommended intervals. Key

fluids include antifreeze/coolant level and concentration, as well as power steering, brake, transmission and windshield washer fluids. 8. Engine Belts and Hoses: Replace belts and hoses at recommended intervals. 9. Air Filter: It protects the engine from airborne contaminants. Poor airflow to the engine inhibits performance and generates greater fuel consumption. A new air filter lets clean, unrestricted airflow into the engine and helps ensure proper performance for a longer life. 10. Wiper Blades: The lineup from Mopar, Chrysler Group LLC’s service, parts and customer-care brands of wiper blades, includes Beam Blades, which provide superior allweather performance and aid driving visibility. Mopar (a simple contraction of the words “MOtor” and “PARts”) is the source for all genuine parts and accessories for Chrysler Group and Fiat S.p.A. brands. It services Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, Ram, SRT, Fiat, GM, Ford, Toyota,

Spending Data Shows Consumers Are “On The Road Again”

W

hen it comes to travel, the open road is still king. That’s a key finding from the latest spending data in the Chase Freedom Lifestyle Index. The index, a barometer of consumer trends based on aggregated Chase Freedom cardholder spending data, revealed that while overall spending on travel has remained flat since 2011, road trip purchases, such as gas, fast food, hotel, car rental and toll purchases, saw doubledigit increases between the first and second quarters of 2012, as well as modest gains year over year. Airline purchases, which only grew by 1 percent between 2011 and 2012, actually saw a 3 percent decline from the first quarter of 2012. Good for the Economy “Our cardholders, who represent a significant segment of the U.S. credit card market, have taken to the open road, investing on average hundreds of dollars each in communities across the country,” said Phil Christian, general manager, Chase Freedom. A Cross-Country Snapshot The Index’s “road trip price tag” reveals an average spending of $366.80 on these purchases between

April and June 2012. This represents a 3 percent increase from the same quarter in 2011 and an 8 percent increase over the first quarter of 2012. The average man’s “road trip price tag” is nearly 45 percent higher than the average woman’s ($437.80 vs. $302.80). Cardholders between the ages of 35 and 44 had the highest level of spending ($448.50), while those over the age of 65 had the lowest level ($269.00). America’s heartland saw the greatest expenditures on road trip spending, led by South Dakota (where the average cardholder spent $476.90), Wisconsin ($472.50) and Indiana ($468.80). Increased travel spending was most notable in Arizona, Florida and Illinois. Spending on hotels and car rentals has been on the rise throughout 2012. In the category of car rentals, June marked the highest spending of the year so far. Dining Out Is on the Menu Whether it’s a quick stop on a road trip or a special dinner out at a favorite restaurant, Americans are also dining out in greater numbers in 2012. Overall dining spending is

up 11 percent between the first and second quarters, with fast food outpacing general restaurant establishments (15 percent vs. 10 percent). Ladies Who Lunch, Breakfast and Dinner By gender, women increased their spending in both dining categories by a slightly higher margin than men: They spent 13 percent more in restaurants than last quarter, whereas spending among men grew 9 percent. In the fast-food category, women spent 17 percent more this quarter, whereas men spent 15 percent more. Cash Back on the Road and at the

Table Chase Freedom cardholders can earn 5 percent cash back on up to $1,500 in purchases at gas stations and restaurants from July through September 2012. Customers can activate 5 percent cash back online, over the phone, via text message, on Facebook or at one of the bank’s 5,500 branches. Group Getaway? There’s A Vacation Rental For That

C

oordinating group travel— whether it’s with loved ones, good friends or new acquaintances—may be easier than you realize. True, each traveler has a vacation preference to take into consideration and, particularly for larger groups, one of the more important vacation decisions requiring a collective consensus may be the type of accommodations selected. If your plans include spending quality time with the kids, kicking back with the girls or guys for a long weekend or coming together for a grand family reunion, then chances are you’re looking for a comfortable atmosphere that lends itself to making everyone feel as relaxed and at home as possible. That’s why it may be wise to opt for a vacation rental that can deliver many of the conveniences of home while providing the thrill of time away in an enjoyable vacation spot. Vacation Rental Benefits Vacation rental companies offer

many accommodations with convenient homelike touches such as a fully equipped kitchen, spacious bedrooms, separate living areas and a washer and dryer. They offer travelers a number of opportunities and amenities: • Instead of always dining out at a restaurant, families and larger groups may prefer to dine in and share a homemade dinner at the kitchen table or enjoy an outdoor barbecue on the patio. • Vacationers can relax in spacious bedrooms (many of which have individual televisions), while common living areas let you get together and recount the day’s

highlights. • The convenience of an on-the-spot washer and dryer in most rental units can make packing easier and lighter, while potentially saving you money on extra airline baggage charges. Confirming these vacation accommodations through a reliable and experienced vacation rental company such as Wyndham Vacation Rentals, which is backed by one of the largest and most trusted hospitality companies in the world, may help take the guesswork—and legwork—out of vacation rental research and pretravel preparations.
