Balloon Museum Extends Visit of Traveling WWI Gallery

A

LBUQUERQUE, NM-Due to high interest, the Albuquerque Balloon Museum has extended the visit of the “Honoring Our History” Exhibition. The Waddell & Reed Financial, Inc. and Ivy Funds have created an ambitious and unconventional acknowledgement of the firm’s 75th anniversary. In partnership with the National World War I Museum, they are funding a national tour of a custom 18-wheel truck that has been transformed into a traveling gallery that will visit 75 communities across the U.S., with Albuquerque’s Balloon Museum being selected for one of the stops. On Friday, January 13 and Saturday, January 14, the unique traveling museum will be at the Balloon Museum between 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., offering a free, interactive and educational experience designed in concert with the National World War I Museum-the first and only American museum solely dedicated to preserving the artifacts, history and personal experiences of a war that brought dramatic impact and still echoes in our culture today. The traveling gallery features a variety of artifacts, videos, an authentic walk-through trench that simulates the war environment, audio tracks, headlines and historical descriptions. It allows visitors the chance to experience the tight conditions of trench warfare, see the relatively primitive tools, weapons, equipment and uniforms, amid sounds and signs of war 100 years ago. Every visitor has the opportunity to make a financial donation to support the non-profit museum either electronically on-board, or through cash donations. Visitors donating $25 or more will receive an “Honoring Our History” T-shirt. Proceeds from donations received during the January 13th Albuquerque visit will be shared with the Balloon Museum Foundation, which is coordinating the event, benefiting our local community with the development of new public programs and events at the Museum. World War I, “the war to end all wars,” was the sixth deadliest conflict in human history. There were approximately 16.5 million deaths and 21 million wounded. The total number of deaths includes 9.7 million

military personnel and about 6.8 million civilians. The Entente Powers (also known as the Allies) lost about 5.7 million soldiers while the Central Powers lost about 4 million. U.S. military deaths were 116,708; civilian deaths 757; military wounded 12,809,280. Waddell & Reed founders Chauncey Waddell and Cameron Reed were WWI veterans who formed a partnership in 1937 to create one of the longest-standing mutual fund and financial planning complexes in the country. The company they founded hopes to raise $500,000 through the tour to help support the museum’s plans for the WWI centennial in 2014. In honor of our nation’s military and veterans there will be a reduced, $1 admission fee to the Balloon Museum for all active and non-active military with ID on Friday, January 13 and Saturday, January 14. The Anderson-Abruzzo Albuquerque International Balloon Museum is a division of the Cultural Services Department, City of Albuquerque, Richard J. Berry, Mayor. Located at 9201 Balloon Museum Drive NE just south of Balloon Fiesta Park (North of Alameda), the Balloon Museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. year-round (closed Mondays). Admission is $4.00 for adults ($3.00 for NM residents), $2.00 for seniors 65+, $1.00 for children ages 4-12, and children 3 and under FREE. Admission is free each Sunday from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m., and all day on the first Friday of every month. Balloon Museum Foundation members, ICOM, AAM, and NMAM members are FREE. Collecting And Storing Family Memories

F

rom snapping photos to making scrapbooks or shooting home movies, parents have long been the curators of family memories. Today, those memories are more likely to be preserved digitally, saved on our computers and shared via social networks. Collecting memories online makes it easier to share them with family far and near, especially if you keep in mind a few simple rules of thumb. Here are a few tips to help you get started: Scan to save. Don’t forget to scan in documents, such as relevant newspaper clips, great report cards and awards that might otherwise fade and become fragile.

Celebrate the everyday. Don’t just document special events such as weddings or birthday parties. Snapshots of everyday life are likely to be treasured years later. Add action. Mix up memories in photograph form and video. Choose a computer that makes it easy. When you shop for a new computer, choose one with a red VISION Technology sticker from AMD. Computers with this technology offer better tools for transforming photos and videos into memories that last a lifetime. All-day battery life means easy editing and photo sharing on the go, crystal-clear HD visuals so pictures and videos look more lifelike, and smooth video playback so finished

home movies can be viewed and shared with loved ones. When looking for a PC: • Speed counts: Lack of time holds most people back from doing more with their photos. When you choose a PC with a supercomputing processor such as AMD’s VISION Engine, your computer will have the horsepower needed to upload and edit photos and videos quickly. • Focus on the graphics: Home videos and digital photographs look richer and more vivid, and editing is a breeze if you have a computer with supersharp graphics capabilities. • Smooth out those shaky home movies: Video-editing software, such as vReveal, allows you to

easily organize, fix, edit and share your videos. You can edit videos taken from a smartphone, tablet or video camera to brilliant HD quality with a single click, create panoramic photos from your video, and save in a mobile-friendly format for easy sharing on the go. • Battery life: If you’re planning to upload photos or share a video with mom while you’re away from home, choose a machine with long battery life, such as the HP dv6 with AMD AllDay Power, which lasts up to 10.5 hours. e have all experienced it. You are at your favorite restaurant anticipating a great meal, but when you take your first taste, you realize something isn’t right. The chef was in a hurry and left out one of the key seasonings—salt. You reach for the salt-shaker and sprinkle on some to adjust the taste to your liking. Or maybe you’ve had the opposite experience. Your meal arrives and it is way too salty so you send it back.

John Deere Sets World Record With Combine Constructed From Canned Food

I

t’s a new world record! John Deere’s Project “Can Do” created a full-sized combine made entirely from food—308,448 cans of food and 11,268 bags of food, to be exact. According to Guinness® World Records, that’s a new record for the largest sculpture ever built from canned food. The combine can-food sculpture, which is 60 ft. wide, 80 ft. long, 16 ft. tall and weighs approximately 170 tons, recognizes the vital role America’s farmers play in feeding the world. The sculpture depicts John Deere’s new S-Series Combine harvesting corn and showcases how new equipment and technologies are helping farmers meet the growing world demand for food. The can sculpture was built November 12−17 by a team of 450 John Deere volunteers, including employees, retirees, employee families and friends. The can-food sculpture took more than 1,800 hours to build and contains more than 15 different kinds of canned food, as well as 11,268 bags of popcorn, peas and beans. The sculpture was on display at the John Deere Pavilion in Mo-

line, Ill., until December 12. “Project ‘Can Do’ gave our employees, retirees and their families a tremendous sense of accomplishment and pride in being part of this goodwill effort,” says Nicole Schneider, project co-leader/copywriter for John Deere Ag & Turf Division. “We are all thrilled with the success of this project and that all the food was donated to help those in need. In fact, for every volunteer who worked on the build, one person in need will be fed for one year with all the donated food.” Richard Williamson, project coleader/art director for John Deere Ag & Turf Division, says the project is considered a zero-landfill project with all of the building materials being recycled or reused. In addition, he credits several organizations for supporting the company’s efforts to create the world’s largest can-food sculpture. “The project wouldn’t have been possible without technical help from a number of organizations,” Williamson adds. “Those include Canstruction®, Inc., which organizes canstruction competitions world-

wide; the Chicago architectural firm RTKL, Inc., that led the design and construction of the project; and Hy-Vee Food Stores, which helped source and deliver all the cans of food.” During the construction phase of the project, John Deere fans from around the world participated by designing “virtual cans” and submitting them via the John Deere Face-

book page. Photographs and videos about the project and its construction can be found at www.Facebook. com/JohnDeere. On December 12 all the food was donated to River Bend Foodbank, which serves families in the Quad Cities and 22 counties in Iowa and Illinois. (NAPSI)—
