Rare 19th Century Melodramas Coming to NHCC

A

LBUQUERQUE – During the Victorian era, “melodrama” referred to a poetic recitation by an actor with piano accompaniment as an enhancement to the text. Wildly popular in Europe during the 19th century, these presentations were theatre without staging, comparable to a radio play or to hearing the dialogue and soundtrack from a movie without seeing the visuals. Albuquerque audiences will have a rare opportunity to see this kind of melodrama performed on Sunday, June 24, 2012 at the National Hispanic Cultural Center. Grammy-nominated pianist Douglas Riva and actor and performance artist Patricio Tlacaelel Trujillo y Fuentes will perform two seminal melodramas by Richard Strauss: “The Castle by the Sea,” with text by Ludwig Uhland, and “Enoch Arden,” based on the well-known poem by Alfred, Lord Tennyson. Strauss is best known for his gorgeous, dramatic operas, often performed by the Santa Fe Opera, as well as his symphonic works and his songs for voice and piano. Douglas Riva began his musical education at the age of nine, studying both piano and flute, and initiated his professional career at the age of sixteen as Principal Flutist with the El Paso (TX) Symphony Orchestra. Later, devoting himself exclusively to the piano, he continued his studies at the Juilliard School, New York University, and Barcelona’s Academia Granados-Marshall. He is today’s foremost exponent of the piano music of the Spanish composer Enrique Granados (1867-1916), as well as a renowned interpreter of contemporary music. Patricio Tlacaelel Trujillo y Fuentes has worked locally with La Compañía de Teatro de Alburquerque, the South Broadway Cultural Center, and the Albuquerque Museum, as well as the National Hispanic Cultural Center, and was one of the founders of the Chicano arts group MEZCLA. He also has performed at MoMA and the Nuyorican Poets Café in New York, and with El Teatro Campesino in California. He received his theatrical training in New York from poet, playwright, and director Owen V. Dodson of the Harlem Renaissance. Your one chance to experience these unusual performances is on Sunday, June 24 at 2 PM in the Albuquerque Journal Theatre, Roy E. Disney Center for Performing Arts. shoulder, the temperature should be about 225° F, and you will want to let it go for several hours because the fatty and connective tissue in these cuts need time to cook until tender. C O M M E N TA R Y Simple Guidelines For Safer Grilling

C

ooking outdoors is in at any time of year. When you grill, it’s important to follow the guidelines from the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service to prevent harmful bacteria from multiplying and causing food poisoning: • When shopping, buy cold food such as meat and poultry last, right before checkout. Separate raw meat and poultry from other food in your shopping cart and put packages of raw meat and poultry into plastic bags. • Plan to go home right from the store. Consider taking a cooler with ice for perishables. Always refrigerate perishable food within two hours—within one hour when the temperature is above 90° F. • At home, place meat and poultry in the refrigerator immediately. Freeze poultry and ground meat that won’t be used in a day or two. • Completely thaw meat and poultry before grilling so it cooks evenly. Use the refrigerator for slow, safe thawing. For quicker thawing, you can defrost in the microwave or in cold water if the food will be placed immediately on the grill. • A marinade is a savory, acidic sauce in which a food is soaked to enrich its flavor or to tenderize it. Marinate food in the refrigerator, not on the counter. Poultry and cubed meat or stew meat can be marinated up to two days. Beef, veal, pork and lamb roasts, chops and steaks may be marinated up to five days. If some of the marinade is to be used as a sauce on the cooked food, reserve a portion before putting raw meat and poultry in it. However, if the

marinade used on raw meat or poultry is to be reused, make sure to let it come to a boil first to destroy any harmful bacteria. • When transporting food, keep it cold. Use an insulated cooler with sufficient ice or ice packs to keep the food at 40° F or below. Pack it immediately before leaving home. Keep it cold until ready to use. • Always wash hands with soap and water before handling food. Use hand sanitizer or moist towelettes if soap and water are not available. • Meat and poultry cooked on a grill often brown very fast on the outside. Use a food thermometer to be sure the food has reached a safe minimum internal temperature. • After cooking meat and poultry on the grill, keep it hot until served-at 140° F or warmer. Keep cooked meats on the side of the grill rack. At home, cooked meat can be kept hot in an oven set at approximately 200° F, in a chafing dish or slow cooker or on a warming tray. • Refrigerate any leftovers promptly in shallow containers. Keep Your Grounds Looking Presidential

H

omeowners don’t need to live at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue to have a presidential-looking lawn this year. What You Can Do Abiding by some simple rules can help homeowners maintain an environmentally sound yard they can be proud of. • Take care of the grass. Lawns play a critical role in reducing soil erosion, maintaining soil permeability and conserving water. • Choose flowers and plants that suit the climate. The correct plant types make care and maintenance easier and more cost efficient. • Frequent and proper pruning helps produce better blooms, maintains plants’ desired size and can help rejuvenate older plants and shrubs. • Enrich the soil with compost. Materials such as coffee grounds, yard clippings, wood chips and leaves help rejuvenate the soil by adding rich nutrients. • Plant a tree. A great way to further beautify a green space, it also provides such benefits as cooling shade and filtered air. What Others Are Doing That’s the advice from Cindy Code, Project EverGreen executive director, who recently got a firsthand look at the White House’s iconic South Lawn when the organization was recognized by first lady Michelle Obama. “The South Lawn at the White House is one of our country’s most famous green spaces,” Code said. “So many of our country’s key events take place on this lawn. Homeowners, too, can easily create an enjoyable, healthy lawn at their property without a lot of work.”

Project EverGreen is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and enhancing the country’s green spaces—including lawns, parks, golf courses and sports fields—for future generations. Project EverGreen’s GreenCare for Troops program was recently honored by the White House’s Joining Forces initiative, spearheaded by first lady Michelle Obama and Jill Biden, wife of Vice President Joe Biden. The initiative honored 20 communities and organizations that assisted military families. The program pairs families of currently deployed military personnel with lawn and landscape contractors and volunteers who provide landscaping and lawn care services, free. The recognition is part of the White House’s Joining Forces initiative. “We were indeed honored to receive this recognition not only for our program but also for all the professionals and volunteers who have donated their time and services to this project,” Code said. “It is a way to provide a true benefit to military families while also promoting the healthy benefits of a well-maintained green space.”

Get Off To A Great Start

A

s U.S. athletes head to the 2012 London Olympic Games, here’s something to consider—while the journey to the podium is a long one, it’s not all about getting to the finish line. Every person has a start—the moment they realized their potential to aspire to great things. So as others are applauding the finish, Kellogg’s is celebrating the start by showcasing a series of moving “Start Story” videos that follow the beginnings of Team Kellogg’s—a team of U.S. Olympians, U.S. Olympic hopefuls and a Paralympian. The eight athletes offer their own insights and tips for starting off right, because a great start can lead to great things: Summer Sanders—Swimming Legend: Sanders is a big proponent of breakfast, never skipping the morning meal. She has instilled the importance of a proper morning meal in her two children. Dwight Phillips—Track and Field: Phillips believes rest, recovery and nutrition are three important factors that all athletes should take seriously if they want to maximize their potential. Rebecca Soni—Swimming: Soni eats a good breakfast every morning before practice to last through her workout. Throughout the day, she sticks to a healthy diet, making sure to incorporate lots of fruits and vegetables into meals, which keep her energy levels up. Casey Tibbs—Paralympic Track and Field: Nutrition is essential to Tibbs’ success. He believes breakfast is the most important meal and that as an athlete, you’ve got to have a good breakfast. He lives a very healthy lifestyle, drinks lots of water and watches his calories. Michael Landers-Table Tennis: The long practice sessions and stamina needed in table tennis require Landers to eat as healthfully as possible. He eats fruit as well as protein before and after his workouts.

Jordyn Wieber—Gymnastics: Wieber never misses breakfast-since her workouts often start early in the morning, Wieber says it’s the most important meal of the day for her. It gives her the nutrition and energy she needs to have a successful workout every day. Juan Agudelo—Men’s Soccer: Agudelo believes it is extremely important to eat healthfully in order to perform his best every day on and off the field. Destined to be a soccer player from a young

age, Agudelo’s first word was “Goal.” Kerri Walsh—Beach Volleyball: Walsh cites great nutrition as essential to her success on the court. Constantly on the go whether to practice, an international event or to the park with her kids, Walsh’s food habits reflect her lifestyle-she loves convenient, healthy foods she can pack in a bag and take on the road. “Kellogg’s cereals have been at the start of my day since I was a kid, and now, breakfast
