A Faster Way to Santa Fe for the New Mexico Rail Runner Express!

A

new fare structure is set to go into effect for the New Mexico Rail Runner Express next month, while at the same time train passengers will also see some new amenities. One of the most notable amenities being added is the first express train between Albuquerque and Santa Fe. Passengers using this new service will be able to save 20-25 minutes in each direction on their commute between the two cities. There will be one northbound express in the morning and one southbound express in the evening. The express train will skip three stations and will have a second locomotive on the train set to save time climbing the steep grade on the way to Santa Fe. The new express service is designed to get people to their destinations to meet the most common work start time of eight-o’clock a.m., while the evening express train departs Santa Fe shortly after 5 p.m. “Over the years, our passengers have told us they wouldn’t mind a fare increase if we offered some faster service, peaceful rides and incorporated better technology into our operations structure,” said MRCOG Executive Director Dewey Cave. Following a series of public meetings last fall, Rio Metro Board Members voted on and later approved a new fare structure for the Rail Runner. Fares for one way trips and day passes are set to increase by one-to-two dollars while monthly passes will increase by four-to-11 dollars. This is the first time that the New Mexico Rail Runner Express has implemented a fare increase. New Amenities beginning May 21st Express Train – One northbound and one southbound express train has been added between Albuquerque and Santa Fe for weekday runs. Quiet Cars – A Quiet Car Pilot Program began earlier this year on select trains. Quiet Cars will now be added to additional northbound and southbound weekday trains. New Schedules – Weekday schedules will change slightly to accommodate the new express train. Weekend schedules are being changed to allow more flexibility for people in Valencia County to get to Albuquerque and points north. People will also be able to leave later on weekend mornings to get to Santa Fe. Mobile Phone Ticketing – Rio Metro will begin a Pilot Project on May 21 to begin accepting electronic tickets. Passengers will be able to use their smart phone to purchase their ticket from the Rail Runner website and then present their phone to the ticket agent to scan. A new smart phone app will be released later this year to make this process even easier. Commuter Tax Benefit – This program allows participating employers and their employees to set aside pre-tax dollars for transit passes. Many employers are already working with third-party providers to offer this benefit. This could result in a significant savings for both employers and employees. New Los Lunas Bus Route – Rio Metro will begin a new bus route in the Village of Los Lunas to bring residents to the Rail Runner station in the morning and then back home in the evening.

Helping Teachers Make A Positive Impact

W

hile summer is often a time when students and parents enjoy their vacation, it can also be a time for teachers to go back to school. That’s because summer is a key time for many professional development programs that are designed to help teachers meet the ever-changing demands of the classroom. For example, ASCD—one of the leading providers of professional development programs for teachers—hosts a number of conferences and institutes around the country to improve the efficacy of educators. At these gatherings, thousands of educators are exposed to ideas, techniques and strategies designed to improve teacher effectiveness and support the success of each learner. Making An Impact Typically, topics covered at these events will range from techniques for improving classroom performance to strategies for implementing highquality curriculum. Many believe that what makes these programs stand out is that they have a real impact on educators who participate and, ultimately, their students. This seems to be a characteristic of professional development programs that are considered outstanding. According to a recent study by Scholastic, 85 percent of educators said good professional development programs had either a very strong or strong impact on student achievement. A Focus on Development In addition to conferences and institutes, ASCD also offers a variety of in-person and online

professional development resources for educators of all levels. These books, courses, videos and more aid teachers in the never-ending effort to meet the needs of today’s diverse and evolving student population. Promoting Best Practices Founded in 1943, ASCD (formerly the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development) is an educational leadership organization dedicated to advancing the best practices and policies for the success of each learner. The theme of this year’s summer conference in St. Louis, Mo., is “Revolutionizing the Way We Teach and Learn.” The topics addressed at this event will include 21st Century Learning Skills, Classroom Instruction That Works, Effective Teacher Supervision, and Professional Development and Bullying Prevention. Get Help To Get Your Mortgage Right

T

he process of buying a home has changed dramatically during the past few years. It’s not always a matter of deciding on the home you want and then organizing the financing. Today’s home buyer often needs to start with the financing—how much home you can afford is probably the most critical question buyers need to address. The best place to find that “magic number” is with a mortgage lender. Starting the home- buying process with a lender means you have solid information in hand to start your search. A good lender will share information about mortgage programs that may be offered locally and those programs best suited to your individual situation. Online calculators and ballpark estimates, on the other hand, can run into too many variables. You need an expert, and the good news is that an initial consult with most lenders costs you nothing. At least, that is the case with LendRIGHT lenders. There are more than 150 mortgage companies in the U.S. that carry the LendRIGHT mark of mortgage

excellence. These lenders are pledged to a process built around the home buyer: Relationships—working with you to help you identify the right loan; Information—sharing what they know to help you understand your options; Guidance—providing advice to help you make good choices; Honesty—communicating and responding to your needs in an open manner; and Trust—working to take care of the details to help you close on time. “Home buyers often don’t realize there are different kinds of mortgages that may be suitable for their particular circumstances and qualifications,” commented one lender. “It’s best to explore financing options before making an offer on a home, as many sellers will not consider buyers who are not preapproved.” Learn More For more information, including where to find a nearby lender, visit www.lendright.com.

Help For Those Hurt By Foreclosure Errors

I

f you received any notices about foreclosure of your primary residence in 2009 or 2010 and suffered financial harm because of errors in that foreclosure process, even if you did not lose your home, you may qualify for a free, independent review. The deadline for requesting that review is July 31, 2012. Conducted at the direction of the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency and the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve, the Independent Foreclosure Review will determine whether you suffered financial injury and should receive compensation or other remedy because of errors or other problems during the foreclosure process. To be eligible, the mortgage must have been active in the foreclosure process between January 1, 2009 and December 31, 2010. The property securing the loan must have been your primary residence, and the mortgage must have been serviced by a mortgage servicer covered by the OCC and Federal Reserve enforcement actions issued in April 2011. For a list of those companies, visit www.independentforeclosurereview.com. To know if your mortgage was active in the foreclosure process during the eligible period, check to see if

you received foreclosure-related notices during that period. Request for Review You can submit a request at the same site or complete and return a request form by mail. More than 4.3 million forms and letters explaining the process were sent to eligible homeowners. If you have questions about completing the form or need to request one, you can call (888) 952-9105 between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m. (Eastern), Monday through Friday, and between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Saturday. “I want people to know this process is free to eligible borrowers who ask for a file review, and that they give up absolutely none of their rights in asking for the independent review of their case,” said Comptroller of the Currency Thomas J. Curry. “All eligible borrowers who submit requests can be assured that their file will be reviewed professionally and evaluated fairly to determine whether errors resulted in financial injury.” Not all reviews will find errors, and not all errors result in financial injury. Where the review finds financial injury, the remediation offered is intended to address direct financial harm and can range from a few hundred dollars to more than

$100,000. More than 136,000 people have requested a review. Assistance is available in over 200 languages including Spanish, Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, Hmong and Russian. Watch out for Scams There is only one Independent Foreclosure Review and it is free. Beware of anyone who asks you to pay for any foreclosure review service or offers to complete the request form on your behalf. How To Save On Your Child’s College Tuition

W

hile it can be difficult to predict what tuition will cost by the time your child attends college, there are two things of which you can be sure: First, the cost of tuition is sure to go up—and there’s no way to predict how much it will rise. And second, a smart way to plan for your child’s college education costs may be to enroll in a prepaid tuition plan. Prepaying for tuition can help you do what most other 529 plans can’t: save on the cost of attending college. And since new tuition rates take effect July 1st, the sooner you act, the more you can potentially save. With student loan debt recently surpassing $1 trillion, it is important to protect your child from becoming one of the many students who graduate college having to repay huge student loans on an entry-level salary. Prepaid tuition plans such as Private College 529 let you purchase tuition certificates that are guaranteed by 270+ participating private colleges and universities, including Princeton and Stanford as well as smaller liberal arts schools and research universities. Additional schools can join at any time and new schools will honor any outstanding prepaid tuition. A semester of undergraduate tuition purchased through the plan today will be worth a semester of tuition for up to 30 years— no matter how much tuition rises or what happens in the financial markets. You do not commit to a particular school when you enroll in the plan or at any point until your student enrolls and you redeem your tuition certificates. Since tuition rates vary among institutions, your contributions purchase different amounts at different schools. You can track how

much tuition you own at any of the participating schools anytime by logging on to your account online. Your prepaid tuition must be held for 36 months before it can be redeemed at a member school. The earlier you prepay, the more you are likely to save over time, but, for example, if tuition rises at a rate of 5 percent per year, enrolling today could potentially save you thousands of dollars by the time your child enrolls. The plan offers the same federal tax benefits as any other 529-college savings or prepaid tuition plan and does not charge enrollment, management or annual fees; 100 percent of your contributions go toward the purchase of tuition.

And don’t worry if your student doesn’t attend a college in the plan. You can name another beneficiary, roll over into another 529 account or request a refund. Savers are being urged to make their contributions by June 30th, before the new rates take effect.
