F

rom a modest beginning in 1972 of 13 balloons launching from a shopping mall parking lot, the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta has grown to 500+ balloons and hundreds of thousands of guests at Balloon Fiesta Park each fall. This year will mark the 40th time that the Balloon Fiesta has filled Albuquerque’s crystal blue skies. The Balloon Fiesta is the premier international ballooning event, powered by the perfect October climate and a phenomenon called the “Albuquerque Box,” (a combination of weather patterns and geographic landscape, the box allows balloonists to control and even retrace their adventure). The place to be in October is at Balloon Fiesta Park. The 200 acres of grass and booths will be filled with balloons and vendors selling everything from traditional New Mexican food to Balloon memorabilia. Each year balloon teams from around the world participate in the event and news coverage originates from more than 50 countries. It has become the most photographed event in the world. Join in the special celebration this year - media registration will begin in August. Visit the website for details www.BalloonFiesta.com and follow on twitter for updates @BalloonFiesta.

Balloon Fiesta Mobile App Released

W

ith on-the-go access to everything from mapping Park and Ride locations and finding the best biking routes - as well as receiving instant notices about weather delays and cancellations, the new ABQ Fiesta mobile app offers this year’s Balloon Fiesta goers fingertip access to everything they’ll need on and off the field. Created by APPCityLife, Inc., a local mobile media company, the ABQ Fiesta app not only offers detailed information about Albuquerque’s biggest ballooning event, the app also features complete city guides for both Albuquerque and Santa

Fe with everything from local shopping and attractions to finding the nearest urgent care facility or emergency room. Created as a community event app and open to advertising by businesses throughout the region, the app offers visitors an enhanced mobile experience and provides affordable and even free mobile marketing opportunities to small businesses who often find it difficult to directly reach the thousands of visitors who visit Albuquerque each year during the ten days of Balloon Fiesta. “Our goal was create a mobile event guide with easy access to everything you’d want to know

about Fiesta,” says founder Lisa Abeyta, “ and, best of all, some of our community partners including the BioPark, the Balloon Museum, and several local businesses have all stepped to offer some exciting giveaways and special discounts for our app users.” A few of the prizes for the giveaway drawings include free entry for children into the exclusive Diamond Club at the Balloon Museum, free tickets to Tours of Old Town’s history and ghost tours and free BioPark passes. Giveaway drawings will begin Tuesday, September 27, and will continue with new drawings featured each day throughout Fiesta.

The ABQ Fiesta app can be downloaded in iTunes. And through patented technology, the app can also be launched through the Albuquerque guide of the APPCityLife mobile app. The apps are compatible with all iOS devices including iPod Touch, iPhone and iPad. New for 2011 – Estate Portability Election

P

HOENIX - - The Internal Revenue Service today reminded estates of married individuals dying after 2010 that they must file an estate tax return to pass along their unused estate & gift tax exclusion amount to their surviving spouse. Available for the first time this year, the new portability election allows estates of married taxpayers to pass along the unused part of their exclusion amount, normally $5 million in 2011, to their surviving spouse. Enacted last December, this provision eliminates the need for spouses to retitle property and create trusts solely to take full advantage of each spouse’s exclusion amount. The IRS expects that most estates of people who are married will want to make the portability election, including people who are not required to file an estate tax return for some other reason. The only way to make the election is by properly and timely filing an estate tax return on Form 706. There are no special boxes to check or statements needed to make the election. The first estate tax returns for estates eligible to make the portability election (because the date of death is after Dec. 31, 2010) are due as early as Monday, Oct. 3, 2011. This is because the estate tax return is due nine months after the date of death. Estates unable to meet this deadline can request an automatic

six-month filing extension by filing Form 4768. The IRS emphasized that estates of those who died before 2011 are not eligible to make this election. The IRS plans to issue regulations providing further guidance on this election and welcomes public comment on a number of issues. There are three ways to submit comments: * E-mail to: Notice.Comments@irscounsel. treas.gov. Include “Notice 2011-82” in the subject line. * Mail to: Internal Revenue Service, CC:PA:LPD:PR (Notice 2011-82), Room 5203, P.O. Box 7604, Ben Franklin Station, Washington, DC 20044. * Hand deliver to: CC:PA:LPD:PR (Notice 2011-82), Courier’s Desk, Internal Revenue Service, 1111 Constitution Avenue NW, Washington, DC, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. The deadline is Oct. 31, 2011. Further details are in Notice 2011-82, posted September 29, 2011 on IRS.gov.
