Blue Blubber Jellies Arrive at ABQ BioPark Aquarium Bizarre Sea Creatures Are New to Albuquerque ALBUQUERQUE, NM The ABQ BioPark Aquarium is now displaying new and bizarre blue blubber jellies. The jellies arrived on January 12 from the New England Aquarium in Boston where they were cultured. Blue blubbers jellies (Catostylus mosaicus) maintain a symbiotic relationship with photosynthetic algae that live in its tissues. The algae use sunlight to produce food for the jelly, supplementing its diet of zooplankton. The blue blubber does not have tentacles like other jellies. Instead, it has eight oral arms, each of which has many tiny mouths. The blue blubber is harmless to people and cannot sting. “We’re excited to work with a new jelly,” said Scott Wimmer, Aquarium Assistant Curator. “This is a species we haven’t had here before.”

Blue blubbers are a common species in the Indo-Pacific, where they often occur in large blooms of millions of jellies. These blooms are a nuisance to swimmers, boaters and fishermen, whose nets become clogged with jellies. Jellies thrive in nutrient-rich, oxygen-poor ocean waters, which are often associated with run-off, pollution and increased temperatures. The increasing sizes and frequencies of jellyfish swarms indicate the ocean’s health is in decline. Guests of the ABQ Biopark Aquarium can learn ways to help protect our ocean’s health and see these new jellies on their next visit. The BioPark is an accessible facility and a division of the City of Albuquerque’s Cultural Services Department. New Cost-Saving Flood Insurance Option From FEMA (NAPS)—There may be good news for residents and business owners in locations recently designated as highrisk flood areas. Starting in 2011, the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA’s) low-cost insurance policy may be available to help them save on flood protection. Making New Insurance Requirements More Affordable Flood risks are dynamic and change over time due to a variety of factors, including changes in the natural landscape, the impacts of land use and development, and the condition of flood control structures such as levees. Since mandated by Congress in 2003, a multi-year effort has been underway to update the nation’s flood maps to reflect these changes. The new maps are providing more accurate information about where flooding is most likely to occur. As a result, many property owners are finding that their risk has changed and they may now be required to purchase flood insurance. Fortunately, FEMA understands the financial burden this may place on some property owners and is expanding eligibility for its popular lower-cost flood insurance policy. A New Insurance Option Beginning January 1, 2011, a new insurance rating option from FEMA’s National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) will allow many property owners who previously didn’t qualify, to take advantage of the low-cost insurance for two years before they are required to pay standard rates. The program will make Preferred Risk Policies (PRPs), which start at just $129 a year, available for properties that have been newly mapped into high-risk areas due to a flood

map revision on or after October 1, 2008. “Floods are the nation’s most costly and frequent natural disaster and those who are now in the highest risk areas really must have flood insurance protection. But we recognize the challenge of additional expenses in the current economy. This new option provides time for residents to adjust to the higher risk level—and continue their flood coverage at a more affordable rate,” said Edward L. Connor, Acting Federal Insurance and Mitigation Administrator. While extended eligibility for the PRP does not become effective until the start of the new year, policyholders who believe they may qualify should contact their insurance agent for further details. After two years at the reduced PRP rates, policies will increase to standard rates. However, there are other options to reduce cost, including a grandfathering provision, use of elevation ratings and higher deductible policies. Addressing Your Risk This new option represents an important way to save on flood insurance for those who are newly required to carry it. Miles And Miles Of Snowmobiling Fun (NAPS)—With abundant snowfall and more than 25,000 miles of trails weaving through forests, lakes, fields and villages, Wisconsin’s snowmobile trail system is the envy of other states and Canadian provinces. The Wisconsin Department of Tourism offers tips on the ideal snowmobiling experience, including trails and places to stop for comfort food and rest up following a satisfying day on the trail. Eagle River: Officially registered as “The Snowmobile Capital of the World,” the area has five snowmobile clubs that groom 600 miles of trails daily. These trails weave through Vilas and Oneida Counties, the Nicolet National Forest and around 2,400 lakes. The city’s annual ice castle creation is an icy architectural wonder that has changed in design every year since it was first built in 1927. Hurley: Who can argue this is the state’s snow capital with snowfall totals known to top 300 inches. People often snowmobile here through the first week of April. Their big snowmobile event of the year is the Pro Vintage Snowmobile Olympus, which takes place on a half-mile oval track at the Gogebic County Fairgrounds. Owning A Home Can Pay Dividends (NAPS)—There are many good reasons to become a homeowner. In addition to the social benefits, the feeling of autonomy and sense of community investment, there are the tax benefits. One major tax benefit is the mortgage interest deduction (MID). The MID has been part of the federal tax code since 1913 and helps families offset the cost of homeownership. The ability to deduct the interest paid on a mortgage can translate into significant savings come tax time. For example, a family who bought a home this year with a $200,000, 30-year, fixed-rate mortgage, assuming an interest rate of 4.5 percent, could save nearly $3,500 in federal taxes when they file next year.

“In today’s market, eight out of 10 home buyers must borrow money to buy a home,” said National Association of Realtors(r) chief economist, Lawrence Yun. “For aspiring homeowners who don’t have hundreds of thousands of dollars in savings to buy a home outright, tax benefits like the mortgage interest deduction help them begin building their future through homeownership.” Of the taxpayers who itemize deductions, 80 percent utilize this benefit. This is true for people of all income levels. According to the most recent IRS tax return data available, 65 percent of the families who claim this deduction earn less than $100,000 per year. “People who benefit most from the MID are first-time home buyers and younger homeowners,” said Yun. “These families can use the money they save to build their emergency fund, apply it toward their children’s future education or help them improve the quality of their lives right now. Single Ladies Top The Home-Buying Charts (NAPS)—Almost twice as many single women (20 percent) are buying homes than single men (12 percent), according to the National Association of Realtors (NAR). The reason? Because they can. Even in the midst of a challenging economy, women are poised for success. It’s the first time women make up more than 50 percent of the workforce. Recent research by the U.S. Department of Education’s National Center for Education Statistics showed women earn 58 percent of all college degrees. These members of the workforce are earning significant salaries and want to build their wealth and security through homeownership. A Sign of the Times As recently as the 1970s, it was challenging for a woman to get a mortgage or even a credit card. Now, modern credit companies don’t discriminate against gender and the overall acceptance of women staking their claim as equals among men in the workplace (both in pay and skill) has contributed to a spike in homebuying among today’s single women. According to Bev Thorne, chief marketing officer for Century 21 Real Estate LLC, these tips will help female home-buyers: • Make a list of what’s important to you—Focus your search on finding a property that will meet your needs today and in the future. Fifty-one percent of single

female homebuyers in 2010 said proximity and convenience to their job was most important in terms of location (NAR Report 2010). • Frugal habits pay off in the long run—Thirty-five percent of single female homebuyers in 2010 cited cutting spending on luxury and nonessential items as a sacrifice they made toward saving for their home (NAR Report 2010). • Know what you’ll be paying for—If you’re used to renting and having a landlord cover costs of standard yard and home maintenance, you’ll need to anticipate new expenses, such as landscaping and garbage removal. Americans Support SmokeFree Parks And Beaches

More public spaces are becoming smoke-free as evidence grows about the dangers of secondhand smoke.

(NAPS)—A recent survey shows a sizable number of Americans want to breathe fresh air when they are outdoors— not secondhand smoke. According to the National Social Climate Survey of Tobacco Control, more than two-thirds of Americans feel that smoking should not be allowed within 20 feet of a doorway—a finding that is increasingly relevant as more indoor spaces have gone smoke-free. The survey also found that 43 percent of Americans feel that beaches should be smoke-free, and 36.5 percent are in favor of smoking bans in parks. “This annual survey is a consistent reality check on how America perceives tobacco use and exposure to secondhand smoke,” said Cheryl G. Healton, president and CEO of Legacy, a national public health organization. “This year’s survey focus on outdoor spaces reminds us that passive smoking is a public health threat, whether in a bar, restaurant, office or even at the beach or in a park.”

According to the Americans for Nonsmokers’ Rights, 100 municipalities and the state of Maine prohibit smoking on public beaches and 470 have enacted smoking bans in city parks. According to Legacy, secondhand smoke (SHS) is a mixture of smoke given off by the burning end of cigarettes, pipes or cigars, and smoke exhaled from the lungs of smokers, which can involuntarily be inhaled by nonsmokers. The U.S. Surgeon General has concluded that SHS is a major health risk to nonsmokers and in 1992 the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency classified SHS as a Group A carcinogen, meaning it is known to cause cancer in humans. There is no safe level of exposure. SHS contains over 4,000 chemical compounds including formaldehyde, cyanide, arsenic, carbon monoxide, methane and benzene. Among the chemicals identified in cigarette smoke, 11 are known human carcinogens. The Top Things You Don’t Know About Your Car Insurance (NAPS)—Americans have gone to sleep dreaming of cars ever since the first Model T was rolled off the assembly line in 1908. Some dreamt of the cool bullet nose on the 1950 Studebaker Commander Convertible. Some dreamt of classic muscle cars like the 1969 Ford Mustang “Boss 429.” When dreamers become drivers, however, they’d better be darn sure they comply with state laws mandating that they carry auto insurance. Most states won’t even issue you a license unless you’re covered for liability against injuries and property damage done to others. If it’s been too long since you checked your auto insurance policy, you may be surprised by what you may or may not be covered against. Read on: • Remember This Word: Depreciation Picture this scenario you (probably) wouldn’t wish on even your worst enemy: Only a few short weeks have gone by since you proudly drove your brandnew car off the lot, when suddenly—wham!—it’s totaled in an accident. If you’re like a stunning 52 percent of those questioned for an “Insurance Literacy” survey conducted recently by Zogby International for MetLife Auto & Home, you’ve been operating under the assumption that you’re automatically covered for the car’s full replacement cost. Uh, not necessarily. Most insurers subtract for depreciation—and you’d

be surprised how much “value” disappears once you drive off the lot. Only a select few like MetLife Auto & Home will make you whole during a policy’s first year and/or 15,000 miles. • It’s Possible To Be “Upside Down” on a Totaled Vehicle The past few years have made us all more familiar with this term, as applied to home mortgages, than we ever wanted to be. However, the same principle applies to auto loans. Say you still owe $15,000 on your loan. If you’re in an accident and your car ends up being declared a total loss but is still valued below the loan payment, guess what: Unless you had the foresight to purchase “gap” insurance, you’re still responsible for repaying the difference on your loan. • Leasing Isn’t a Free Pass Ah, but you say you don’t actually own your car. Nice try, but even if the vehicle you demolished (see above) was leased, you’d also need to have purchased gap insurance to have your insurer cover replacing it and paying off your lease obligation. • The Rental Car Conundrum Talk about probably wasting an average of $9 to $19 a day. Even though most auto insurance policies and credit cards extend (varying) rental insurance benefits to customers, 28 percent of those surveyed said they nevertheless signed up for the insurance offered by rental car companies when not driving their own cars.

• Check Your Homeowners Policy If someone steals your cell phone or MP3 player from your car, don’t expect most standard auto policies to cover its replacement cost. That’s handled by homeowners, condo and renters insurance. • Money-Savers Not To Be Overlooked Why leave money on the table when you don’t have to? While 93 percent of those surveyed knew they could get a break on their insurance if they had a good driving record, only 63 percent were aware that discounts also exist for things like carpooling or limiting travel below a certain number of miles per year. Similarly, only 19 percent knew you could save as much as 28 percent by buying auto insurance through programs offered by employers. So what’s the takeaway from all this?
