Retracing our steps in 2012 Also in this issue:

This FEMS Affiliates Letter issue is a round up of what we have published and what the federation has accomplished in the past 12 months.

Publications page: • Thematic issues published in 2012 • Pathogens and Disease is open for submissions

2012 has been a dynamic year for the FEMS Journals following Prof. James Prosser’s appointment as FEMS Publications Manager in 2011.

The most significant changes will be noticed by readers of FEMS Immunology and Medical Microbiology (FEMSIM) since it will be replaced by Pathogens and Disease in 2013. “It is more than just a change of title,” according to FEMSIM Chief Editor Dr Patrik Bavoil. “The journal has been entirely re-conceived to embrace today’s and tomorrow’s research in infectious disease biology,” he said. You will find this journal and all other special issues published this year on the next page.

cal knowledge but microbiologists themselves. At the moment, FEMS has 48 society members from 36 European countries. The profiles of some of these member societies have been published in the FEMS Affiliates Letter this year and can be found on the third page spread. FEMS was also big on events this year. Aside from the annual FEMS Council Meeting, the Coinfections meeting in Halle, Germany was organised by the European Academy of Microbiology while microbiology experts also met in Brussels, Belgium for the Impact of Microbiology event organised by the European Microbiology Forum. Also in April, the 100th FEMS Executive Board meeting was held in Konstanz, Germany where current FEMS President Bernhard Schink comes from. Some photos from these events can be found on pages 8 and 9.

On the page following that spread are pictures we collected from our grant recipients in their Meeting Attendance Grantee hooded sweaters. If you are a Meeting Attendance Grant recipient yourself and want your picture to be published in the FEMS Affiliates Letter, please send your images wearing the hoodie to fems@fems-microbiology.org.

As regulars to every issue, a list of deadlines and FEMS-sponsored meetings can be found on the back page. You will also find the leaflet for the 5th FEMS Congress in Leipzig, Germany which will be held in the summer of next year (21-25 July 2013). FEMS congresses are held every two years and certainly, it will be our biggest event next year so come and join us!

MICROBIOLOGY TIDBITS

Why Is the Flu More Common During the Winter Season? This study presents for the first time the relationship between the influenza A virus viability in human mucus and humidity over a large range of relative humidities, from 17 percent to 100 percent. It was found that the viability of the flu A virus was highest when the relative humidity was either close to 100 percent or below 50 percent. The results in human mucus may help explain influenza’s seasonality in different regions.

Why Some Strains of Lyme Disease Bacteria Are Common and Others Are Not New clues about the bacteria that cause Lyme disease could lead to a novel strategy to reduce infections, according to a study to be published in mBio®, the online open-access journal of the American Society for Microbiology, on Dec. 4. DNA Analysis of Microbes in a Fracking Site Yields Surprises Researchers have made a genetic analysis of the microbes living deep inside a deposit of Marcellus Shale at a hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking,” site, and uncovered some surprises. They expected to find many tough microbes suited to extreme environments, such as those that derive from archaea, a domain of singlecelled species sometimes found in high-salt environments, volcanoes, or hot springs. Instead, they found very few genetic biomarkers for archaea, and many more for species that derive from bacteria. Source: Ohio State University
