Should we stop complaining? We often meet people who kvetch about the course, the hostels, the profs and the college in general. These can be pretty menacing especially if you’ve been sent out of class together with them. I’ve begun to picture them as people who pin friends to trees and make them listen to their ramble about how they feel everything is wrong with everything. Then, there are the few who pass an occasional remark which are thoughtful comments about how things could have been better. Most others quickly understand how the college works and go into a sort of deep meditation – never speaking a word about it to anyone. The rest want to be badly heard and take their concerns to social media forums. They either start a huge debate or are simple ridiculed. Sometimes, it does get a little irritating to see long posts about trivial things. Does that mean that we stop complaining? In my opinion, voicing out your views is always going to be beneficial – be it a mindless rant or a cogent talk. The feedback that you receive from others will give you a fair idea of where they stand with respect to the issue you raised. Moreover, if it is an issue which is affecting a lot of people, there is a good chance that someone is going to take the matter up seriously and try solving the problem. This has happened many times in the past when students had taken inititatives and tried coming up with solutions to pertinent problems. All this has become way easier given the fact that we have a direct link with the head of the institution through either social media or even directly. So, given such open forums of discussion, isn’t it just better if people who are actually trouble or annoyed work towards solving the issue after taking others’ suggestions rather than constantly whining about it? Secondly, would things in college have changed this fast even if there had been no direct link with the head of the institution? These are questions that I think everyone needs to ponder about. And to answer the question raised in the beginning – No, never stop complaining. If not you, someone else just might solve the problem.

Pragyan, the ISO certified International Techno-managerial Organisation of NIT Trichy hosted its first outreach programme ‘Square One’ at Chennai on 1st and 2nd of November, 2014. It was a two day event held in the premises of Sathyabama University and was aimed at giving students a glimpse of how Pragyan ‘15 would be like. The event was inaugurated by the Chief Guest - Dr P Sivakumar, Director, CVRDE, DRDO. Four events were scheduled to be conducted in Square One – Circuitrix (Workshop+Event), Pragyan Quiz (Regionals), Hovercraft workshop and String Theory(Sci-fi writing). The Hovercraft workshop was conducted by Aero-Sapiens. Around 48 students from various colleges in Chennai took part in it and were taught how to build an RC hovercraft. They now get to participate in Hover One – a hovercraft based event during Pragyan ‘15 in NIT-T. The workshop was easily the highlight of the whole programme and got excellent reviews from the participants. Circuitrix, as the name suggests, was an electronics event testing the participants’ debugging skills in which more than 50 students participated. The regional round of Pragyan Quiz (A National level intercollegiate quiz) was also conducted. The winners of the quiz gain a direct entry to the National Finals to be held during Pragyan in NIT-Trichy where they will battle it out with the finalists from other regions. The last event to be conducted was String Theory – a sci-fi writing competition which unfortunately saw no entries even after the deadline. All in all, the programme went smooth even though the footfall took a little hit which often saw organizers hurrying to publicize events on the spot and get interested participants from within the venue. The problem of a reduced footfall was notably because of two reasons – proximity of the venue from Chennai and the strict rules imposed by Sathyabama University. With a completely revamped set of events and a whole new approach to the technical fest, Square One did fall short of reaching the high standards that they had set themselves. The outreach event did witness quality participants but there is also the motive of spreading science and technology to more people in general which couldn’t quite satisfactorily be met with. Hopefully, the next outreach event takes care of the shortcomings in the first one and manages to be much bigger and better. Else, the question will always remain : Are we going back to square one?
