Description

From the bestselling author of The Indispensables, the largely unknown and dramatic story of irregular guerrilla warfare that altered the course of the Civil War and was the inspiration for the formation of America's modern special forces In military terms, the Civil War is most remembered for the epic battles that have come to define it: Gettysburg, Antietam, Shiloh, The Wilderness. However, as bestselling author Patrick O'Donnell reveals in

The Unvanquished, a vital shadow war occurred away from the major battlefields, and was in many ways equally consequential to the war's outcome. This contest was fought between guerilla units--mostly Confederate Rangers led by John Singleton Mosby and Union Jessie Scouts formed to capture or kill them--from the middle of 1863 up to war's end at Appomattox. With pioneering tradecraft, collectively they engaged in dozens of raids and spy missions, often dangerously wearing the other's uniform, on penalty of death if captured. They disruptively attacked critical supply trains and railroads and often clashed in spontaneous engagements and ambushes. The intelligence they brazenly gathered was invaluable as the war entered its grinding phase. Two dramatic missions they supported in 1864, had they succeeded, would have instantly altered the war--the Dahlgren Raid on Richmond aimed at capturing Confederate president Jefferson Davis, and General Jubal Early's army's advance to the outskirts of a largely undefended Washington, DC. An expert on special forces, O'Donnell puts readers on the ground via the words of those who were there and in vivid battle scenes. Characters like Scout Asbe Montgomery and Ranger James Williamson, along with Mosby, Scout leader Richard Blazer, and others, are indelible. O'Donnell situates the shadow war alongside another partisan effort, that of the Secret Service to destabilize the North and win the 1864 election for Peace Democrats and those in the North fatigued by the seemingly forever war. He convincingly connects Mosby to Secret Service plans to kidnap Abraham Lincoln after his November re-election and hold him for ransom to force the cease-fire that would have maintained the South's integrity. The first full chronicle of the shadow war between North and South, rich in action and offering original perspective on history, The Unvanquished is a dynamic addition to the literature of the Civil War.
