Each of the county’s communities features a unique B&B, creating a combination of lodging and dining needs in the form of impeccable hospitality. In addition to providing a bride, groom, their family members and friends with a place to stay and eat, some of these locations also offer the opportunity to get married on the property. For an elegant affair, The Mercersburg Inn will create a one-of-a-kind experience. Weddings at the inn can be held in front of the fireplace in the Great Room or outside on the beautiful

landscaped lawn. After the ceremony, the inn serves as a reception site, where guests can enjoy cockails and butlered hors ‘doeuvres. After the excitement is over, invite your guests to spend the night in one of the inn’s seventeen rooms. The Inn at Ragged Edge can accommodate small, intimate occasions for up to 60 people. For weddings on the property, the happy couple has complete use of the inn from the afternoon before until the morning after vows are exchanged. Ceremonies can be held inside the inn or outside on the stone patio. Following the festivities, couples can retreat to the honeymoon suite, which features a spacious king bed and whirlpool tub. Romantic packages are available as well, which includes fruit and cheese plates, wine or

sparkling juice, flower bouquets, local chocolates and gift cards for local restaurants. The inn is also a nice place to hold a bridal shower in the days leading up to the big event. Lillie’s Garden in Chambersburg is a great spot to spend your first night of marriage. The “Honeymoon Night” package is perfect for newlyweds who are looking to unwind after a long day, gather their thoughts, and take a deep breath before embarking on their new lives together. This includes a queen-bedded room with a private bath and a full breakfast served to order in the morning. The couple also receives a gift basket filled with fresh flowers, chocolates and a bubbly bottle of wine to take home and share. Other lovely B&Bs in Franklin County include Monte Vista in Blue Ridge Summit, The Craig Victorian and The 657 House in Chambersburg, Penn National Inn, Burgundy Lane in Waynesboro, and the newly opened Long Acres Alpaca Farm Guest House in Mercersburg. Franklin County is a beautiful destination with something for the whole family

Weddings bring friends and families together. It is a good time to catch up and make memorable moments. Take a few hours to explore and enjoy Franklin County--the history, arts and entertainment, recreation and natural beauty, wonderful foods and warm hospitality of charming

communities like Chambersburg, Greencastle, Mercersburg, Shippensburg, Waynesboro and all the places in between. Historic and beautiful, Chambersburg is the seat of justice for Franklin County. Settled in 1734 by Scots-Irish immigrant Benjamin

Chambers, Chambersburg has long been known for its excellent location. Majestic Memorial Fountain marks the crossroads of the historic Lincoln Highway-U.S. Route 30-and Route 11. Raided, invaded, and devastated by Confederate firing of the town in 1864, the fountain and the bronze sentry are memorials to the soldiers of the Civil War and all Franklin County veterans. A trip to the Chambersburg Heritage Center, 100 Lincoln Way East, will put the county in perspective and give a good view of the county’s classic architecture. A tour of the Old Franklin County Jail and John Brown House on King Street are must-sees for history-buffs who like to experience history up close. The kids will like the black light miniature golf at the Chambersburg

Mall or a stop at the doh-nuh-t company, who make fresh oneof-a-kind donuts made to order. Or, simply wind down at Roy Pitz Brewing Company and Beer Stube, 140 North 3rd Street, making craft beers since 2008. Old-fashioned charm and friendliness describe Greencastle perfectly. Located near the Maryland state line along the 1-81 corridor, Greencastle was founded in 1782 by John Allison, a personal friend of George Washington. First came the Baltimore turnpike and then the Cumberland Valley Railroad passed through town. Today visitors can glimpse vestiges of the era at the old passenger station along the high line at West Baltimore and Jefferson Streets and enjoy coffee, cocktails or more at The Highline Restaurant. Antiquers and ghost enthusiasts will love The Farmer’s Wife, 103 South

Carlisle Street. Greencastle Antiques has a lot of hidden treasure, also ... sans ghosts. Allison-Antrim Museum is a heritage site that interprets Scots-Irish history and maintains a variety of exhibits, from rock and roll to baseball, the Civil War and Underground Railroad, and a collection of artifacts from the oldest, continuously operating drug store in the United States-Carl’s Drug, which is still going strong. Kids will love Funcastle, 3054 Buchanan Trail East, with go-carts, mini-golf, batting cages, arcade and more. To visit Mercersburg is to step back in time. As the boyhood home of fifteenth president James Buchanan, Mercersburg offers rich colonial, Underground Railroad, and Civil War history. Settled by James Black, a Scots-Irish immigrant, in 1730, the town was originally called Black’s Town. Take the historic walking tour of downtown, enjoy the wonderful early American architecture, and listen for the lovely 50-bell carillon of the Mercersburg Academy Chapel. Long Acres Alpaca Farm is a heavenly

18

spot and home to award-winning huacaya alpacas. The views are amazing, and the alpaca are so sweet. While you are in Mercersburg, check out the outstanding Moon Dog Pottery shop just outside of town. Check the PA Opry’s schedule to see if you can catch a Branson-Style variety show at The Star Theatre. Shippensburg is another lovely town, settled by Scots-Irish immigrants in the 1730s. Shared by Franklin County and Cumberland County, and named in Norman Crampton’s book, 100 Best Small Towns in America, Shippensburg

is well-known as a college town. Throughout all seasons and year after year, beautiful Old Main stands as a hallmark of the University and the town of Shippensburg. In the mood for a hike, step onto the Cumberland Valley Rail Trail at Shippensburg Township Park, 304 Britton Road, The trail travels 11 miles to Newville. Walk as much or as little as you want. Enjoy walking, jogging, biking, horeseback riding, and non-motorized uses. Be sure to see Rachel’s Country Store as featured on National Geographic’s show for a marvelous selection of Old Order Amish goods. The whole family will like Tiny World, a miniature display of a town, complete with a town hall, fire station, and school. It is viewable year-round but amazing to see lit from Thanksgiving to New Years. A fine-looking old factory town, Waynesboro’s prosperity developed as industry developed. Laid out by John Wallace in 1797, the town was first called Mount Vernon, then Wallacetown, Waynesburg, Waynesborough, and finally Waynesboro in 1831. Part of the unique beauty of Waynesboro is in the difference of the palatial, Victorian-era homes and the simple houses of the working-class people. The 1881 borough hall on Main Street shows the practicality of its residents. Before housing local government, the structure was a fire

company, a farmer’s market, and an opera house. A side trip to the Renfrew Museum & Barn will make your day. You can stroll through the 1800s farmstead at your leisure or tour the famhouse. Property is more than 100-acres, offers a picnic and play area, a four square garden, and largest collection of John Bell pottery. Waynesboro is also known for its Destination ARTS! initiative. Store after store of local, regional and national art on-display in downtown. In addition to the five main communities, Franklin County has some special places with identities all their own. Places like Fayetteville, Orrstown, Path Valley, Fannettsburg, and Fort Loudon. If you are someone that just likes to see where the road leads, try visiting one of Franklin County’s towns- around the bend. Fayetteville is home to one of the country’s longest and most successful summer theatres- Totem Pole Playhouse. Just across the road is Caledonia State Park with swimming pool, hiking trails, picnicking, and pure relaxation. Stop too, if time allows, at the four buildings of the Fayetteville Antique Mall which are open seven days a week. Toasts & Blessings Weddings give life to all sorts of memories. Any part

of the nuptials can create a special moment for the bride and groom, families and friends to recall warmly in years to come. A genuine toast or a certain blessing can bring lasting and personal meaning to your wedding day. Wedding toasts are as much a part of the wedding as I do. Traditional etiquette gives the first toast to the father of the bride, then the groom toasts the bride, and the best man toasts the groom. Today, traditional order is being replaced by a more contemporary order where the best man offers the first toast, followed by the maid/matron of honor and can even include the mothers of the bride and groom. In fact, any member of the wedding party can offer a toast, including the bride and groom. Also remember, another chance for wedding toasts is the rehearsal dinner. The host of the dinner usually begins the toasts, and from there, everyone can join in the praises.

The strongest and sweetest songs yet remain to be sung. -Walt Whitman Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful and endures through every circumstance. -1 Corinthians 13:7 Sexiness wears thin after a while, and beauty fades. But to be married to a man who makes you laugh every day, ah, now that’s a real treat. -Joanne Woodward (married 40+ years to Paul Newman)

May all your troubles be little ones. -Irish proverb My best friend is the one who brings out the best in me. -Henry Ford I wish you all the joy you can wish. -William Shakespeare’s” Merchants of Venice”

A few tips for toasts are: • Before the wedding day, decide who is toasting whom, at what event, and the order of the toasts. • Keep toasts short; two minutes is perfect. • Be yourself and be genuine. Offer a toast of simple and sincere congratulations. Share a funny memory or a heartfelt reminiscence. • Be confident, practice, speak to everyone, remember to smile and raise your glass.

Weddings are emotional times and sometimes it

is difficult to pull together feelings and thoughts in a concise toast. A good way to convey sentiment is with a well-suited quote. Here a few possibilities: The best thing to hold onto in life is each other. -Audrey Hepburn

24

W

ith a multicultural society, so many kinds of weddings are possible, and honoring family heritage is a good way to add a little extra to your wedding. Or, perhaps the bride and groom have a special affinity to a foreign country or even plan honeymooning there. Then, sharing a blessing from that heritage can add special meaning. Here are a few some blessings from different cultures.

Wishing you A house full of sunshine, Hearts full of cheer, Love that grows deeper, each day of the year. -From an Old Welsh Blessing Now you will feel no rain for each of you will be shelter for the other. Now you will feel no cold for each of you will be warm for the other. -Apache Blessing May the raindrops fall lightly on your brow, May the soft winds freshen your spirit, May the sunshine brighten your heart, May the burdens of the day rest lightly upon you, And may God enfold you in the mantle of His love. -Irish Blessing

Good health, good cheer, May you live a hundred years, one hundred years… -Polish Blessing sung in the Polish Wedding Song of “Sto Lat,” wishing the bride and groom 100 years of health and happiness

May God be with you and bless you. May you see your children’s children. May you be poor in misfortunes and rich in blessings. May you know nothing but happiness from this day forward. -Old Irish Blessing

For the more practical and realistic, these lines from

“Gift from the Sea” by Anne Morrow Lindbergh are good food for thought. “When you love someone, you do not love them all the time in exactly the same way, from moment to moment. It is an impossibility, it is even a lie to pretend to. And yet this is exactly what most of us demand. We have so little faith in the ebb and flow of life, of love, of relationships. We leap at the flow of the tide and resist in terror its ebb. We are afraid it will never return. We insist on permanency, on duration, on continuity; when the only continuity possible in life as in love, is in growth, in fluidity, in freedom. The only real security is not in owning or possessing, not in demanding or expecting, not in hoping, even. Security in a relationship lies neither in looking back to what it was in nostalgia, nor forward to what it might be in dread or anticipation, but living in the present relationship and accepting as it is now. For relationships, too, must be like islands, one must accept them for what they are here and now, within their limits - islands, surrounded and interrupted by the sea, and continually visited and abandoned by the tides. One must accept the security of the winged life, of the ebb and flow of intermittency.”

H

appy wedding...happy life and remember this Greek proverb: The heart that loves is always young.

May the best you’ve ever seen Be the worst you’ll ever see. May the mouse never leave your pantry With a tear-drop in his eye. May you always keep healthy and hearty Until you’re old enough to die. May you always be just as happy As we wish you now to be. -Scottish Wedding Blessing (translated from dialect)
