So many new advertisers this month By chance, when I was out about visiting a new client, I was totally intrigued to learn that they kept ‘spend’ ex-battery hens - rescued from the slaughter house and living a natural life in the garden. It certainly captured my heart, and after much thought (taking on hens should not be taken on lightly!), I contacted the British Hens Welfare Trust to reserve 5 ex-batts myself! I have to say, I haven’t been so excited in years, (I live a simple life!). We worked closely with Lisa Montgomery – The shop proprietor of 3 Wishes, a gift shop, to create a brand feel which communicates exactly what the business does and will also role out beautifully across marketing material, bags, signage and eventually online. We were really excited about this project - the shop sells gorgeous products but unfortunately had been running unnoticed on the Southam High Street. We started by looking at some other similar types of shops in the same market to analyse successes and not so successful branding. It was felt that the logo was quite dated and could do with a little modernisation as well as trying to use some of the shops more recognisable colours to aid the changeover. We presented Lisa with a range of Ideas which communicated the name 3 Wishes, used her prominent colours and also had some familiarity with the old brand. Below you can see some of our development and finally the finished idea.

Jane Howorth, founder of the British Hen Welfare Trust, introduces us to the pleasures of ex-battery hens... What could be nicer than the taste of slightly warm chocolate cake made with eggs collected from your own back garden? Answer: knowing you saved the lives of the hens that laid them. The feelgood factor instantly increases ten-fold. Of course I didn’t start the British Hen Welfare Trust to enhance the taste sensations of the nation; but to try to lift the lid on the thorny issue of battery farming. The subject has always created controversy and inflamed emotions with references in the media often being one-sided and accompanied by graphic images with the result that the farmers
Right from the start I decided to treat British farmers with respect, and to create a charity with a positive ethos. I didn’t want to berate farmers, I wanted to understand them, work with them, learn more about the egg industry and what happened to hens in other parts of the world. It soon became apparent there was a massive demand for these delightful creatures and the next step was to build local teams of volunteers around the country. In 2005 the British Hen Welfare Trust became the first registered charity for chickens and we now have 30 teams around the UK, all of whom access local farms and find good, caring homes for
these hardworking hens. The farmers we work with trust us and are happy to work with us so we can organise a hen collection and take as many hen as we are able to find good homes for. Re-homers that apply to adopt the hens are usually patient (we cannot supply birds on demand as we work to farm slaughter dates), and compassionate. And the hens show their appreciation in more ways than one; not because they lay delicious eggs - they offer so much more than that. Keeping ex-commercial hens is enriching and for anyone who’s not tried some as pets: they are endearing, mischievous, precocious and individual. They may all have brown feathers, but that’s where the similarity ends as most ex-bat keepers will agree. Oh yes, the chocolate cake I shall be tucking into has been made not just by me; contributions have also been made by Bunty, Darcy, Scooter and Winky… and that’s why I know it’ll be the best chocolate cake in the world!
