At a recent workshop in Leamington, I worked with a group of mums who wanted to ditch the guilt. We talked about how feeling guilty comes hand-in-hand with being a motherlet’s face it, who even used the word guilty before having children. We have long lists of what makes us feel guilty whether it’s wanting to be at work, missing time with our children, or leaving children crying at nursery. Feeling guilty isn’t confined to working mums. Mums who choose to stay at home can feel guilty for not always enjoying the time they spend with their children. Whatever our own personal triggers are, we are left feeling stressed, tired and negative – not exactly a great contribution to family life! Your children learn from what they see you do. Continuing to talk about

feeling guilty, doing nothing about it and experiencing the negative impact doesn’t show your children a very positive picture of motherhood. Remember no-one can make you feel guilty and time with your children is too precious to feel like this. The key to change is to think positively and take action. Think about the benefits to you and your children of you working. List the triggers for your guilt and decide how to tackle them e.g. I feel guilty being at work instead of with my child – make sure that when I am with them we have uninterrupted play together without me checking work emails or doing chores.
