‘GO CONFIDENTLY IN THE DIRECTION OF YOUR DREAMS AND LIVE THE LIFE YOU HAVE IMAGINED.’ A fantastic quote by poet and philosopher Henry David Thoreau and one that is strategically positioned on my desk so that it’s the first thing I see when attempting another day of ‘making dreams happen’. It’s also a reminder that every dream is a precursor to a goal that has taken me on the journey I have been fortunate enough to travel. I always knew I wanted to direct, as well as meet and work with Michael Jackson, a challenge maybe, but this was never an option, it was just something I was going to do. So when a teacher once told me I’d never amount to anything, I just simply responded with, ‘Well we’ll see about that’. Sometimes it takes another person’s negative energy to spur you into positive action and twenty-five years later, I’m a Director, choreographer, vocal coach and writer and have been blessed to work with my inspiration Michael Jackson. So I guess, by walking confidently towards my dreams, I really am ‘living the life I imagined’. My media industry journey started back in 1991 where I was a runner for a music video editing facility. After

hammering on more doors than I care to remember, someone finally let me in. Not getting paid, being treated like something the cat dragged in and having to run miles for random items at 3 o’clock in the morning were just all part of the job, but I learned to run fast, dodge incoming editor tantrums and take mental notes of ‘everyone’s’ job whilst doing so. As for the practical in-house training I received, coupled with my childhood stage school years, I was able to learn some of the most fundamental skills I would need to become the director I wanted to be. Gripping hard to work my way up the slippery slope that is the entertainment industry, I finally landed a production assistant position at Nickelodeon and after many late nights and shadowing everyone I could get my hands on, for three years, I eventually landed the role of Presentation Director in the studio. Blood sweat and tears was what it was like back then, so if you wanted something, you really had to work for it. Through the years at Nickelodeon, MTV, SKY, BBC and CDUK, I got

to work with many artists including Mariah Carey, for whom I got to spend four hours setting the stage, and then when it wasn’t right, I got to do it all over again! However, void of the glamour I’d hoped for, I took my chances, a fist full of dollars and flew to New York City, where impulse, a $2 call from a street corner payphone and a touch of bravado, managed to secure a meeting with Sony Records. One month later I left New York with three music videos and a bunch of artist coaching credits under my belt, including 90’s super group Total and SWV. However, it was whilst directing The Michael Jackson Celebration Concerts that my big dream of meeting Michael was realised. It was my fourth concert, but this time, at the London Apollo, launched Jackson’s Heal the Kids Foundation and was attended by the man himself. The show eventually became what is now known as Thriller Live, for which I was the original Director and Choreographer, but it was here at the Apollo, whilst nervously directing and stage managing, that Michel Jackson walked into my life – Well, on to my stage. Standing in the wings, with cans half on, half off my head with hair caught up in between, he smiled that beautiful smile of his and shook my hand. I remember he

are the students who come to me for help and the creative work I do with kids in the care system. As an adopted person myself born into a world these kids sadly know only too well, their plight is very close to my heart. These youngsters are a huge part of the reason I wrote my first book ‘Conscious Living’ and am now finishing my novel ‘Raising Expectations’. Like me, many of these amazing youngsters have been told that they will amount to nothing, so what chance do they have if they believe the words they hear? The expectation for them to fail seems to be a high statistic in some people’s minds, but I have made it a goal of mine to feed their wonderful imaginations with tools that help them to prosper beyond perhaps even their own expectations.

was polite and very complimentary, but the funny thing is, all I could think of was, did he like the lighting plot and entrance I had designed for him? Fortunately, I went on to have the pleasure of meeting and working with Michael on several occasions, including The World Music Awards, where I worked with Chris brown on a tribute for Michael’s Diamond Award, The ‘What More Can I Give’ Concert in Germany with Pavarotti and the legendary Luther Vandros and of course at the wonder that is Neverland. To have been able to witness the Master at work were moments that changed my life. It is by Michael’s example that I was touched and inspired to use my own creativity to benefit others.

Michael was a creative genius and a wonderful humanitarian and I am honoured to have been blessed by his presence in my life. I miss him dearly every day, but I know that his spirit lives on and continues to inspire my dreams. I have been fortunate to work with some incredible artists such as, Sheila Fergusson, Zoe Birkett, Marvin (JLS), Denise Pearson (Five Star) and Jeffrey Daniel (Shalamar) and through my performance coaching business Fuzion X, I also get to work with dancers and actors and well, anyone who wants to find their X-factor and give Simon Cowell a run for his money. But with all its glitz and glamour, the thing that truly continues to drive me forwards

‘A child’s life is like a piece of paper on which every person leaves a mark’. (Chinese proverb). My aim is to leave a positive mark that encourages every child to dream big and then go make it happen. Life can often be a roller coaster ride of obstacles to conquer and tasks to achieve, but in order to ‘live the life you imagine’, it is important to remember to dream! In order to succeed, you must hold tight to faith, gather a little courage, and then trust your instincts and go for it! It is important to remind yourself that you have the choice and the power to follow all your dreams. Success starts at your own doorstep; it’s up to you where you choose to take it and who knows where you’ll end up?

5 STEPS TO A ‘PERFECT’ FAMILY CHRISTMAS...

Once again you feel overwhelmed at the thought of being the perfect mother, partner and hostess at Christmas. A client of mine decided enough was enough. As a working mum she was fed up of feeling stressed and guilty at not living up to the superwoman image. She knew it was unrealistic but she didn’t know how to break the cycle. Although she said the main thing she wanted was family fun at Christmas, she was caught up in the whole

homemade perfect Christmas of making lots of food, presents and decorations not forgetting hosting the huge family dinner and neighbourhood party. Step 1: we worked together to identify where the pressure to be this superwoman was coming from. She realised it was mainly from herself. Step 2: I asked how helpful it was to her and her family being this way. It led to a stressful Christmas where she spent most of the time in the kitchen not letting anyone help as she knew how to do it properly, resenting being so tired and then taking it out on her children and husband. Miserable. Step 3: to focus on how to take control and change things she asked her children what they love most about Christmas together. Funnily enough it was simple things like decorating the tree, wrapping presents together while listening to carols, making mincepies together

not watching her do it, playing family games, watching Christmas films. Hmm, nothing about a perfectly iced cake, beautifully decorated table with a homemade centrepiece and a recreation of Nigella’s menu! Step 4: make a plan and include the whole family. Step 5: ask for help. She still wanted to have a Christmas dinner for family and a party for neighbours. The difference was she planned to get people to bring things. She said she felt confident, in control and the guilt faded away as she focused on creating wonderful childhood memories – perfect! A very special exhibition will take place at Leamington Spa Art Gallery & Museum from 2 December 2011 until 12 February 2012, titled James Edward Duggins (1881 - 1968): A Warwickshire Impressionist. This exhibition provides a unique opportunity to see a wide range of works by the popular, but now often forgotten, local artist and photographer James Edward Duggins. Duggins, the son of a clockmaker, was born in Cubbington in 1881. He moved to St Ives at the age of 23 to study under the British Impressionist painters Algernon Talmage and Julius Olsson. There, he became friends with the marine artist John Park and met Edward Stott and George Clausen, who influenced his pastel work. In 1906 he returned to Leamington Spa to establish a photographic business at The Grove Studio on Regent Grove. He also taught at the Boys’ College, Binswood Avenue and the Art School in Leamington, and illustrated two books, Sweet Arden (1908) and Unknown Warwickshire (1924). He continued to paint and sketch scenes inspired by the Warwickshire and Cotswold countryside throughout his life, exhibiting regularly at the Royal Academy. On Friday 9 December, 1 - 1.30pm, Helen Cunliffe, Duggins’ granddaughter, and her husband Bob, Town Mayor of Royal Leamington Spa 2010 - 2011, will talk about their memories of the artist’s life and work. David Barby, art and antiques expert and President of the Friends of Leamington Spa Art Gallery & Museum (FLAG), will talk on Friday 20 January, 1 - 1.30pm, about the Duggins paintings from his private

collection that are on loan to the exhibition. These 30-minute talks are part of our regular Friday Focus programme. Admission is free and there is no need to book.
