FEELING GREAT, LOOKING WELL... Learn more... Much as it is wonderful to promise such things, it would be unrealistic make these assertions as an assured matter of course. It is, however, something that as an NST (Neurostructural Integration Technique) practitioner to which we would certainly wish to aspire. NST is based on the work of the Australian bodyworker, Tom Bowen. Bowen himself simply wished to be known of as an Osteopath but the Australian Authorities said no and it was not until after his death that the therapy became known as Bowen Technique et al. Bowen therapists are not there to diagnose conditions. Instead the treatment takes an holistic approach, treating the body as a whole rather than reference to named illnesses. It is a handson remedial treatment that on average lasts

around 45 minutes. It consists of PRI-moves applied at specific points of the body and it is these rolling impulse moves that help the body to rebalance and realign itself. Everyone’s body functions better when in balance and this is something our bodies strive for to attain the best for whatever task we wish to set – whether it is work, rest or play! Following a neck injury sustained as a diagnostic radiographer and subsequent surgery, I found that Bowen reduced my symptoms greatly when there seemed to be little treatment on offer. So impressed was I by the treatment that 10 years ago, I undertook to train as a therapist and have been practising ever since. The conjunctiva is a very thin layer of cells covering the front of the eyeball and the inner surface of the eyelids and inflammation of this layer is called conjunctivitis. It can be caused by allergy or virus or bacterium but of course allergy is not an infection. Viral conjunctivitis sometimes causes small epidemics in young children. The symptoms are of a gritty feeling in the eye; sometimes the eye gets more watery and red. If it is bacterial, then a mucky discharge or crusting can also occur. Slight discomfort in bright light is common, but if it is severe, then a different diagnosis might be more likely. Similarly, it doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t cause bad pain, double vision, irregular pupils or painful eye movements. Vision isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t normally affected other than briefly on blinking if there is pus in the eye. If it is bacterial, everything usually gets better in 2-5 days whether you treat it or not, but if it is viral, it can sometimes last a few weeks. Antibiotics make no difference in viral infections. In recent years, with the concerns about more and more infections becoming resistant to antibiotics, people have been encouraged to let conjunctivitis get better on its own. There are some very rare complications

pain or swelling or photophobia (pain in light) or problems with vision, then you should see your doctor. The Health Protection Agency also says that children should not be kept away from schools, nurseries and childminders when they have conjunctivitis, but only if there is an outbreak should they then contact the local health protection unit.

Children – if you listen very carefully on the night Santa is visiting where you live, you will hear Santa’s Bell and that’s the time to tell Mummy and Daddy to get your coat on and be ready to visit him on his sleigh. I think he will have chocolate to hand out and you can tell him what you would like him to bring you on Christmas Morning. Southam Lions will again be visiting the town and surrounding villages in the days leading up to Christmas and once again all the money so generously donated will be given to local Children’s Charities. Every child, no matter the age, when talking to Santa will get a chocolate bar! Last year a young lady of 85 years came out to see Santa and got her bar of chocolate! Last year through your generosity at Christmas time we raised £4,000 for Childrens’ Charities. Please give generously again when we knock on your door. Santa’s on his way! Santa will be one of our special guests at the switch on of Southam’s Christmas Lights on Friday 2nd December. The fun gets underway at 4.30pm with the switch on by Santa and the Mayor Cllr Mike Gaffney MBE TD at 6pm. Local radio station Mercia will be sending along a daytime presenter (TBC) and their Street Stars. Children from Southam Primary School Choir will be getting everyone in the mood for Christmas with a selection of festive songs. There will also be the usual mini funfair and local organisations stalls. Bring the family and get the Christmas season off to a bright start who knows we may even have snow again! As many of you will know Rockinghams Motorcycles has been established since 1963 but the past year has been a difficult one personally and professionally with the sudden death of Tony Jenkins and Keith’s Horrific Race Accident. Paella is the classic dish of Spain.

Its name is taken from the two handled pan it is cooked in, know as a paellera, however, a heavy based large frying pan makes an excellent substitute. It is delicious, simple to cook and extremely nutritious and can be made with a variety of ingredients to suit an individual’s taste Although this is a dish that is traditionally eaten in the open air (and cooked of course), it is just as good if you are taking refuge indoors and now dreaming of the warmer climes of holidays past.

PAELLA - THE TASTE OF SPAIN Paella for 6

Method

Preparation time 25 minutes Cooking time 1 –1¼ hours

1 Fill the largest bowl you have with cold water and pour in mussels and clams. Discard those that float to the surface, those with broken shells and those with open shells that do not close when tapped with a knife. Hold the mussels and clams under the cold water tap one by one and, with a stiff brush, scrub to detach any hairy beards and scrape off barnacles. Place in a bowl of cold water and refrigerate until needed.

Ingredients 12 large or 24 small mussels 12 large clams (optional) 1lb of fresh or frozen peeled prawns or for quickness and ease use: 1 pack of seafood medley 3 tbsp of olive oil 480g (1lb) boneless chicken thighs or breasts, cut into 5 x 2.5cm strips 1 green pepper, chopped 1 red pepper, chopped 2 Spanish onions, medium, chopped 4 large garlic cloves, crushed 3/4lb of long grain rice 400g tin of chopped tomatoes 2 chicken stock • 1 fish stock (optional) 1 ½ tbsp of salt • 1 bay leaf 3 tbs of frozen peas 1 packet of fresh fine beans, chopped Paella seasoning (a mixture of saffron, paprika and other spices available from supermarkets or online)

2 Heat the oil in a large, deep frying pan and fry the chopped onions on a medium to low heat, to soften but not brown for 5 minutes. Add the red and green peppers – cook for a further 5 minutes and add the garlic. 3 Add the chicken and cook for a further 7 minutes. 4 Add the rice, without the water, and the paella spice packet. Mix in to colour the rice and gently fry for a minute or so while boiling the kettle for the stock. 5 In a jug dissolve the stock cubes in a litre of water and add to the pan. 6 Add the chopped fine beans. 7 Add the tin of chopped tomatoes, the bay leaf and salt. 8 Simmer for 20 minutes keeping a close eye on the water levels – add more water if the dish is looking dry. In order for the rice to swell and cook plenty of water is required. Although the Spanish do not tend to stir their paella masterpieces, they do like a burnt crust at the bottom of the pan. In my experience, it is preferable to stir to minimise the amount of ‘crust’ at the bottom. 9 Add the shellfish and prawns (or the cheat’s packet of seafood medley) when the rise is almost cooked.
