MANAGING PAIN WITH HYPNOSIS Pain is the body’s way of telling us that something is wrong and that we need to take action. Think how quickly you respond if you touch something very hot! Without this alarm system we could damage ourselves without realising. But sometimes this alarm system gets stuck. We continue to be in pain when it is serving no useful purpose. All pain needs to be investigated, but if the underlying cause is known and the doctor is in agreement, then hypnosis can be very effective in relieving the suffering. In hypnotherapy the person suffering pain is taught techniques and self-hypnosis to alter the perception of pain. Hypnosis uses deep relaxation, focused attention and the power of the mind to change the experience of pain. The pain doesn’t

go away completely, but it doesn’t hurt so much. One natural event, that is often associated with pain, is giving birth. Unfortunately, anxiety and tension increase the experience of pain, so fear and the expectation that something will hurt, will make it more likely to do so. If a mother is taught how to relax and use self-hypnosis during childbirth, then the experience can become much less fraught. Letting the birth process happen more calmly with reduced muscle tension can, in fact, shorten labour, reduce the need for drugs and other medical interventions and lead to better outcomes for both mother and child. Another area of healthcare where hypnosis can be helpful is dentistry, which is often linked with fear and pain.

The Rotary Club of Southam would like to thank this publication and all it’s readers for the excellent support received in our seventh year of the Tree of Light in Southam. This year raised £1859 for the Acorns Children’s Hospice. Over the last seven years we have donated over £ 11500 to Acorns Childrens Hospice from the Tree of Light. Southam Library staff have been extremely helpful to our cause with displaying the Book of Remembrance and receiving donations.

Acorns Hospice receives no subsidy from government funds and, at present, is sorely in need of money so the help provided by all our supporters will give them encouragement and help in their vital work. A final word of thanks to all who helped to distribute our leaflet and collect donations including Southam Carpets and Jacquelines Florists and to those who reproduced it in their parish magazines and of course our many donors. A special thanks to DSI Southam who have supported us for seven years with free printing and Southam Christmas Lights Committee for their assistance with the Tree of Light.
