In the last 15 years we have travelled to more than 40 countries. With our mountain bikes or snowboards, in search of the best trails and the most stunning powder runs – for magazines and photo shoots, with professional photographers.

After an avalanche accident while shooting a snowboard video in 1999, former freeride pro Holger Feist came up with the idea of a backpack with integrated back protector. The incident did not involve burial and did not have serious consequences. Holger did, however, injure his back as a result of the avalanche shovel in his backpack when he crashed in a couloir. The concept of a back protector also seemed to make sense for mountain biking, particularly as the ergonomics of the bike packs at the time left much to be desired. “Like a football on your back!” is how Holger summarised it in 2000 after a three-week bike expedition through Tibet, to Mount Everest Base Camp. So we started to tinker, sew and experiment, until the first functioning backpack prototype was finally initiated in 2003, on the trails of La Paz. But an entirely different problem emerged in Bolivia, one for which a sensible solution was not yet available on the market: the bike that had been carefully packed in a box, came off the baggage carousel at La Paz

airport in tattered packaging and in all its individual parts. Fortunately everything was still there, but this was obviously a reason for developing a sophisticated bike travel bag, as well. Right from the start, the focus was on maximum functionality and quality so as to ensure that worrying about gear was going to be a thing of the past once and for all. Both products were initially produced only for our own travels and for friends who requested them. Until one day, we had a phone call from a friend and long-term travel companion, Bernd Stucke from Hong Kong. He had taken his bike for a service at the legendary “Flying Ball” bike shop in one of the very first bike bags. Bike mastermind and shop owner Mr Lee was so impressed by this bike travel bag that he immediately ordered 50 bags. And that was to be our first “real” customer.

So in 2008 we founded the EVOC brand. Since then a great deal – and yet only very little – has changed for us. We continue to rely on quality and functionality without compromise, while setting trends in design, comfort and safety. We still travel as much as possible all over the world

Almost like a slanted Table Mountain, the Hoher Ifen towers above the Kleinwalsertal valley. At a height of 2229 m, it is not exactly a giant, but its particular shape makes it really special. For years we have been dreaming of climbing it and this year everything finally seems right. We have just found out though that it is not actually that easy to reach the peak: the entire summit is surrounded by a ledge, known as the “Ifenmauer”, which only seems to have a few gaps. The normal route, a rope-lined trail in summer, leads through a steep canyon above the ski area through the rock structure. From a climbing point of view, the difficulties seem manageable, but the ascent leads through the Ifenmulde valley and continues through large, unbroken slopes in the form of crossings – which feel like endless miles, below and along the Ifenmauer. The risk of avalanches is clearly the restraining

factor here, because nobody wants to experience a slope of this dimension in motion – especially not while climbing it. But we’re lucky: only a few days ago, the avalanche commission cleared the Ifenmulde of its enormous snow load by blasting it using a gigantic snow slab. Scarily contemplating the dimensions, we climb down the metre-thick, ripped edge to put on our skins for the interesting part of the tour. With three videographers and a photographer, there are as many people behind the camera today, as in front of it for our film and photo shoot.

THE SLOPES ARE HUGE AND IN MANY PLACES THE IFENMAUER IS CROWNED BY ENORMOUS CORNICES Product manager Holger Feist, marketing manager Jan Sallawitz and salesman Christian Morgenroth are the “athletes” today, and EVOC videographers and photographers Baschi Bender and Markus Greber are accompanying them step by step on their climb. Drone filmer, Christian Walter will document the entire setting, together with Daniel Staub. So,

besides all the people, a huge amount of material has to be transported up the mountain. A real acid test for our bags and backpacks! We start off on an easy-going, long stretch across the hillside to the great northern slopes – but even so time is limited: the slopes are huge and in many places the Ifenmauer is crowned by enormous cornices, which you don’t necessarily want on your head. The group gathers below a large boulder. From here it’s a steep climb through the channel and only with an elaborate hairpin bend approach is it even possible to gain more height. The time for the photographers and videographers has now come, because the terrain is spectacular and the views are becoming more and more impressive. The way the “athletes” take the increasingly tight hairpins is certainly worth capturing! >>

EVOC TRIP IFEN

“Contortionists” and “potato beetle in despair” are the most popular images that come to mind. While we are struggling to make our way to the next meeting point, the mountain guide is already preparing the ropes for the only real climbing passage of this tour. In principle, we only need to master a rock face that is about five meters high, but the rock is coated with snow and the grips slope slightly downwards. So, with our entire winter equipment this is a real challenge. But as tempting sunshine is already visible at the exit to the plateau, everyone rushes to get to the top quickly. From here on the impression is completely different: from being in a narrow, shady chimney only a few moments ago, we are now on a huge, flat snow plateau that, gently rises to the summit cross. With the backdrop of a spectacular panorama, we trudge the last few metres to a well-deserved summit snack.

FROM BEING IN A NARROW, SHADY CHIMNEY ONLY A FEW MOMENTS AGO, WE ARE NOW ON A HUGE, FLAT SNOW PLATEAU The view is magnificent: at our feet we have the Gottesacker Plateau and further in the distance is the Bregenz Forest, the Rätikon mountain range and Lake Constance. The Lechquellen range and the grand Allgäu mountains round off the picture. Feeling fortified, we now face what is probably the most exciting passage of the entire tour: to continue downhill we have to abseil almost forty metres down a rocky spur to the southeasterly slopes. What makes this so special is that the middle part of the wall is overhanging, which means that a good part of the abseiling is without wall contact, but with impressive airtime. Unfortunately the avalanche situation has deteriorated to such an extent during the day, though, that we have to stay clear of the very large slopes. But even so, we still manage to find plenty of the finest powder snow turns on our way down. Later, back in the valley, and holding a cold glass of wheat beer in our hands and a little pride in our hearts we look back at this very special mountain, which is now all calm again and covered with afternoon sun.

Our backpacks in the TECHNICAL PERFOMANCE BACKPACK range are directed at winter sports athletes, who place great importance on high carrying comfort and functional features. For high- alpine and multi-day touring enthusiasts, we have now reissued our PATROL line and extended it by a 55l model. The NEUTRALITE SYSTEM offers maximum carrying comfort, even when the backpack is fully loaded. Removable attachment systems provide an option for reducing the pack’s own weight independently. The horizontal carry strap, for example, can now be removed, which means that it can be omitted or attached, as required. LITESHIELD SYSTEM The core component of the protector backpack system is the extra-wide, ergonomically shaped 01 neoprene hip belt with Velcro fastening and a large heavy-duty buckle. This system transfers the main load onto the hips, namely right to the body’s centre of gravity. At the same time, the ergonomically cut shoulder straps keep the

backpack comfortably in the predefined position to guarantee perfect back protection. The necessary proximity to the back of the 02 back protector is ensured through mesh elements, EVA foam with ventilation holes and a large, central ventilation channel for maximum air circulation.

LITESHIELD SYSTEM AIR

This system combines the essential back proximity for a back protector with maximum back ventilation. The back area is close fitting and features a large, central ventilation channel as well as two rows of “ventilation grids”: air mesh-covered 02 EVA foam strips with ventilation holes and a special gabled groove reduce the contact surface on

the back, which improves air circulation. The extra-wide, ergonomically shaped 01 hip belt is made from our AIRO FLEX material. In this way, the main load – even in the case of a fully loaded backpack – is transferred to the hips, where it is fixed, while optimum breathability is ensured.

“We were travelling around the Pitztal in search of a photo spot, when we came across this ice cave. High enough to easily walk in, and branching out in all directions, this “ice house” instantly fascinated us. The unreal shapes and the play of light in the ice made a spectacular setting. We explored the cave and its surroundings on foot until the day slowly came to a close. To make sure we still got a good shot we had to abandon our journey of discovery and find a spot that would allow us to put both the beauty of this place and myself as a rider into focus. A small ledge above the entrance of the cave was enough to create the perfect combination. The setting sun then did the rest to give this shot that certain something.“

Designed for ambitious use, our NEUTRALITE SYSTEM is a carrying system for high-capacity backpacks, which allows even heavy loads to be carried comfortably over longer periods, in a way that is neutral to movement. Back adaptation and load transfer are managed via malleable stabilising elements that transfer the weight onto a specially adapted hip belt 01 via segmented and strategically positioned padded elements.

This means that the weight is absorbed as neutrally as possible at the bodyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s centre of gravity, via the hips. Particularly wide, well-padded and ergonomically shaped shoulder straps 02 with a wide neck cut-out help keep the backpack in place at all times and prevent it from slipping, even during action-loaded manoeuvres. At the same time, useful gaps and aeration channels ensure optimal ventilation across the entire back.

AIR CIRCULATION AIR CIRCULATION is used in all our backpacks, as it ensures optimum ventilation while preventing excessive cooling down of the sensitive kidney area, even during extremely high-strain activities or intensive perspiration.

Constant, free air circulation is guaranteed as a result of the vertical air channel. Gaps along the sides of the channel allow additional air to escape.

“The Hoher Ifen has been on my bucket list for a long time. The tour across the Gottesacker Plateau up to the 2229m high peak is one of the most beautiful tours in the Allgäu Alps. Because of the technically demanding passages, though, the tour is only possible in safe conditions. Everyone in our team has alpine experience, but for this tour the weather must also play along. So, finally, last year in winter we could attempt the summit. Besides ski touring equipment, climbing gear is also part of the equipment on the day. Hairpin by hairpin we work our way to the narrow passage on the northern slope of the Hoher Ifen. The couloir becomes so narrow at the top that it is almost impossible to take steps between the bends. Now we have to climb. Skis strapped to the backpack, we make our way up through the short climbing passage and are rewarded with a breathtaking view. Under perfect weather conditions, the summit plateau presents us with an incredible panorama of the Swiss Alps, from the Schesaplana to the Tödi and all the way to the Säntis.” Christian Morgenroth – EVOC Sales Germany

“As a photographer I’m constantly looking for new inspiration. Shots of jumping snowboarders or spray in deep powder snow are always cool, time and again. But this year I changed perspective and went “under” the rider. I abseiled into a crevasse, where I remained until my colleague Jean-Louis gave the signal and set off.
