Le Collège des Bernardins, Paris (FRANCE) « La restauration du Collège des Bernardins est reconnue comme étant une réalisation emblématique de conservation du patrimoine européen. Cet admirable projet de conservation a révélé un bâtiment exceptionnel de l’architecture civile médiévale et, malgré plus de deux siècles de négligence, a permis au Collège d’offrir une fois de plus son témoignage d’enrichissement intellectuel et spirituel à la société contemporaine. »

This laudable conservation achievement has revealed an exceptional building of medieval civic architecture, and after more than two centuries of neglect, has allowed the College to offer once more its gifts of intellectual and spiritual enrichment to contemporary society.”
La renaissance du Collège des Bernardins est sans doute l’une des actions les plus emblématiques réalisées sur le patrimoine européen. Les travaux de restauration de très haute qualité entrepris sur ce bâtiment en péril, après des études archéologiques approfondies, a bien évidemment mis en œuvre les techniques de consolidation les plus attentives à l’authenticité du monument. Les travaux d’aménagement ont également été réalisés dans le plus grand respect des dispositions architecturales originelles. Mais le Collège des Bernardins consacre surtout la renaissance, au XXIe siècle, de l’un des hauts lieux de la culture, de la pensée et de la spiritualité en Europe depuis le XIIIe siècle, où se sont succédés les plus grands esprits de l’époque, en liaison avec l’Université de Paris. Il est redevenu aujourd’hui, à l’initiative de l’association propriétaire, un lieu privilégié de rencontre, de formation et d’échange, largement ouvert à tous les acteurs de la société contemporaine, en totale conformité avec sa vocation originelle.
The renaissance of the Collège des Bernardins is probably one of the most emblematic projects of European heritage conservation. The restoration of this building, degraded and at risk, was carried out to the highest standards and only after extensive archaeological research. These studies determined the necessary stabilisation techniques which were ultimately implemented in ways attentive to the authenticity of the monument and its architectural integrity. The rebirth of the Collège des Bernardins has returned to the 21st century, one of the pinnacles of culture, thought and spirituality dating from 13th century Europe, where in conjunction with the University of Paris, the greatest minds of the time would gather. It has given back to the city, at the initiative of the association of owners, a privileged place for encounters, education and exchanges, and is open to all in contemporary society, and in full compliance with its original vocation.

Harmonious Marriage of Old and New | Mariage harmonieux entre l’ancien et le moderne
The Neues Museum, Berlin (GERMANY | ALLEMAGNE) “The Jury was most impressed with the rebirth of the Neues Museum, situated in the centre of Berlin’s Museum Island, which secured and restored the historic structures of the ruin, and connected them to the surrounding museums. The project was conducted with great elegance and efficiency, resulting in an outstanding and exciting example of a sensitive incorporation of groundbreaking contemporary architecture into the minimal-reconstruction of the original structure.”

Ce projet a sécurisé et restauré les structures historiques de cette ruine, et a relié ces dernières aux musées avoisinants. Le projet a été mené avec grande élégance et efficacité, aboutissant à un remarquable exemple et une référence pour une incorporation délicate de l’architecture contemporaine novatrice dans une reconstruction minimale de la structure originale. »
The achievement of this extraordinary project derives from the rigorous planning and evaluation of the building remains, and the careful repair and minimal restorative preservation of the ruins of the original museum. The structural additions within and outside the building are sensitive and respectful of the original work, whilst differentiating the new phase in the life of this building. The result is an exemplary scheme: a work of contemporary architecture and of architectural conservation which integrates modern design with the repair and restoration of the old, using rigorous transparency and modesty in its interpretation. It successfully fulfills the expression of a knowing and sympathetic architecture for the long term sustainability of this extraordinary and important 19th century building.
La réalisation de ce projet extraordinaire est le résultat d’un planning rigoureux, d’une évaluation précise des ruines du bâtiment, ainsi que d’une réparation minutieuse et d’une restauration minimale du musée. Les ajouts structurels à l’intérieur et à l’extérieur du bâtiment ont été réalisés dans le respect du bâtiment initial, tout en les différenciant des niveaux de construction précédents. Il en résulte un plan exemplaire : un mélange d’architecture moderne et de conservation architecturale qui intègre un design contemporaine à une réparation et une conservation de l’ancien. Le plan utilise une transparence rigoureuse et une modestie dans son interprétation. Il remplit avec succès l’expression d’une architecture réservée et compréhensive pour une viabilité à long terme de cet extraordinaire et important bâtiment du XIXe siècle.

Conservation as Vector for Urban Regeneration and Integration | La conservation comme vecteur de la régénération et de l’intégration urbaines
The Roman Theatre, Cartagena (SPAIN | ESPAGNE) “The Jury applauds the restoration of the Roman Theatre of Cartagena (Cartago Nova) and its well-executed integration into the existing urban fabric, as well as its proper conservation, exhibition and use for educational and cultural purposes. The new and well designed museum which incorporates elements such as the crypt of the Santa Maria Coviesa church and the Pascual de Riquelme Palace, has been invaluable in securing the timely regeneration of this area in Cartegena”. The discovery of the theater imposed a major restructuring of the city, and its revived function has ensured its own preservation through giving it future cultural and educational functions. The new museum has been excellently designed and incorporates elements such as the crypt of the Church of Santa María la Veija and the palace of Pascual de Riquelme. The complex, which combines the archaeological sites, public green areas, and the historic and modern buildings, makes an invaluable contribution to the regeneration of historic Cartagena.

The Letters Project, Amsterdam (THE NETHERLANDS | PAYS-BAS) “The Jury greatly admires this fascinating project carried out on the letters of Vincent Van Gogh, and the incredible opportunity this project has given to an entire community of researchers and enthusiasts. Thanks to the digitalisation and free internet access of the research, it is now possible to read the entire archive of letters of the painter in their original version and in translation. It is truly exciting to see the reproduction of the original letters and their iconographic references. The project is an example to the world of how effective it is to diffuse and spread significant items of cultural heritage, contributing to the safeguard of the original autograph material.” While most people know of Vincent Van Gogh and his paintings, only a few have read his letters and almost nobody is able to relate them to his works. It is a unique experience to read the thoughts and emotions that led to his masterpieces in his own words. This project reveals Van Gogh as poet and writer over a century after his death. The opportunity to read these letters, which have been published in different languages, either on paper or online, offers not only this unique experience, but also presents an innovative educational method that was the result of extensive and rigorous scientific research.

Grâce à la numérisation et à l’accès gratuit à internet de la recherche, il est maintenant possible de lire la correspondance intégrale du peintre dans sa version originale et avec traduction. Il est incroyable de voir la reproduction des lettres originales et leurs références iconographiques. Le projet est, pour le monde, un exemple de l’importance de diffuser et de disperser des pans significatifs du patrimoine culturel, contribuant ainsi à la sauvegarde d’une écriture originale. » Bien que la plupart des gens connaissent Vincent Van Gogh et ses peintures, peu ont lu ses lettres, et encore moins sont capables de les relier à ses œuvres. C’est pourtant une expérience unique que de lire ses pensées et émotions se rapportant à ses chefs-d’œuvre dans ses propres mots. Plus d’un siècle après sa mort, ce projet dévoile un Van Gogh poète et écrivain. L’opportunité de lire ces lettres, publiées en plusieurs langues, sur papier et en ligne, constitue non seulement une chance inestimable mais présente aussi une méthode d’enseignement novatrice qui est le résultat d’une recherche scientifique exhaustive et rigoureuse.

Activism and Awareness-Raising | Activisme et sensibilisation du public
Nils Vest, Copenhagen (DENMARK | DANEMARK) “The jury appreciates Mr Vest’s objective of demonstrating how architectural heritage and culture move from one European country to another. His use of film to raise public awareness for cultural heritage, and his life-long dedication were especially praised, as was his perseverance through adverse circumstances. He has succeeded in speaking for architecture in a matter-of-fact and affectionate voice and has made an impact on a vast audience.” Nils Vest has used his skills as a film maker to promote the cause of architectural conservation and to show how cultures influence each other across boundaries. He has been engaged for many years in protests against the destruction of historic areas in Copenhagen and, through his activism, has encouraged others to participate in the protection of these areas and of historic buildings threatened with destruction. He has long advocated by argument and artistic endeavour the importance of greater cultural diversity. His example is not only an inspiration to those seeking to preserve the heritage of Copenhagen but also to a wider European public.
« Le jury a apprécié l’objectif de Nils Vest : démontrer comment le patrimoine architectural et la culture passent d’un Etat européen à un autre. L’utilisation de films pour sensibiliser le public au patrimoine culturel et son engagement de toute une vie ont fait l’objet de louanges toutes particulières, ainsi que sa persévérance face à l’adversité. Il a réussi à parler en faveur de l’architecture d’une voix concrète et chaleureuse, et a eu un réel impact sur une large audience. » Nils Vest a utilisé ses compétences de réalisateur de films afin de promouvoir la cause de la conservation architecturale et de démontrer comment les différentes cultures influencent chacun d’entre nous par delà les frontières. Il s’est engagé depuis plusieurs années dans le combat contre la destruction de lieux historiques à Copenhague et a encouragé, par son activisme, bien d’autres personnes à participer à la protection de ces lieux et de ces bâtiments historiques menacés de destruction. Il s’est depuis longtemps fait l’avocat, par ses arguments et son travail artistique, de l’importance d’une plus grande diversité culturelle. Son exemple ne sert pas uniquement d’inspiration à ceux qui sont engagés dans la conservation du patrimoine de Copenhague mais aussi à un plus large public européen.

Community Involvement and Social Cohesion | Engagement citoyen et cohésion sociale
The Baerwaldbad - Conservation of a Public Bath House through Vocational Training, Berlin (GERMANY | ALLEMAGNE) “The prize awarded to this project recognises the exceptional achievement of a rich social project which synchronised a socially vulnerable population with an architectural project of great worth. By revealing forgotten cultural influences and by training young people in the techniques of restoration, this project allowed a strong sense of reclaiming cultural elements forgotten by previous generations, and thus shows a way to safeguard historical inheritance in harmony with the social evolution which must be engaged in by modern European cities. It also afforded the participants an enriching opportunity to integrate both socially and professionally.” The Grand Prix awarded to this project recognises the valuable benefits of community involvement and practical training in restoration skills in a socially vulnerable population, achieved through this important architectural conservation project. The Baerwaldbad project successfully reinterprets the needs and symbols of former generations into culturally transformed values of an open, urban society, and helps overcome the deep-rooted convictions that only public funding can create public benefit. It demonstrates that the contrary is also possible. The project hereby provides an encouraging example to other possible initiatives at an urban scale. It is our hope that decision-makers will recognise the outstanding value of this unique project.
« Le Grand Prix récompensant ce projet salue la réalisation exceptionnelle d’un riche projet social qui a rassemblé une population socialement vulnérable avec un projet architectural de grande valeur. En révélant des influences culturelles oubliées et en formant des jeunes aux techniques de restauration, ce projet a permis une forte reconquête culturelle d’éléments oubliés par les générations précédentes, montrant ainsi le chemin pour sauvegarder l’héritage historique en harmonie avec l’évolution sociale que les villes modernes d’Europe doivent engager. Il a aussi permis aux participants d’acquérir l’opportunité de s’intégrer à la fois socialement et professionnellement. » Le Grand Prix attribué à ce projet reconnaît la valeur de l’engagement citoyen et de la formation dans les techniques de restauration d’une couche sociale vulnérable grâce à un projet architectural de grande envergure. Le projet Baerwaldbad réinterprète avec succès les besoins et symboles des générations passées et les transpose dans des valeurs culturelles transformées par la société urbaine ouverte d’aujourd’hui, dépassant l’idée selon laquelle seuls les fonds publics peuvent créer un bénéfice public. Il démontre, en effet, que l’inverse est aussi possible. Le projet donne ainsi un exemple encourageant pour d’autres initiatives similaires à l’échelle urbaine. Il est à espérer que les décideurs politiques sauront reconnaître la valeur remarquable de ce projet unique.
