European Heritage Awards / Europa Nostra Awards The European Heritage Awards / Europa Nostra Awards were launched in 2002 by the European Commission and have been organised by Europa Nostra ever since. The Awards promote best practices related to heritage conservation, management, research, education and communication. In this way, the Awards scheme contributes to a stronger public recognition of cultural heritage as a strategic resource for Europe’s society and economy. The Awards are supported by the Creative Europe programme of the European Union. The European Heritage Awards / Europa Nostra Awards 2021 honour 24 remarkable achievements from 16 countries. This evening, we shall announce the four of these winners that will receive a Grand Prix with a monetary prize of €10,000. The Public Choice Award 2021, also to be announced during tonight’s celebration, has been selected by voters across the world via an online poll conducted by Europa Nostra. During the ceremony, representatives from the European Commission and the ILUCIDARE Consortium, will unveil the two winners of the second edition of the ILUCIDARE Special Prizes, selected by the ILUCIDARE partners from among the submitted applications to the European Heritage Awards / Europa Nostra Awards 2021. ILUCIDARE is a project funded by Horizon 2020 with the aim of establishing an international network promoting heritage as a resource for innovation as well as for international relations. As the world gradually recovers from the pandemic, Europa Nostra and the European Commission are so pleased to be able to return to our wellestablished tradition of hosting the annual European Heritage Awards Ceremony in person. As last year our Awards Ceremony had to be held entirely online, a tribute to the 2020 winners of the Grand Prix, the Public Choice Award and the ILUCIDARE Special Prizes will open the Ceremony.

European Union Youth Orchestra The European Union Youth Orchestra (EUYO), with its trademark energy and virtuosity, is one of the world’s pre-eminent symphony orchestras, and has been described as “the best possible ambassador for the European Union” by former EU commission President Jean-Claude Juncker. The EUYO has provided an exceptional bridge between music colleges and the professional music world for generations of the EU’s finest musicians since its foundation in 1976, and during that time has worked with many of the world’s greatest musicians and appeared in many hundreds of venues across five continents. The EUYO’s almost 4000 alumni have all come through the Orchestra’s rigorous,  annual audition process conducted in  all EU Member States, and many are now notable conductors, soloists, teachers and instrumentalists  working with the major orchestras of  Europe and throughout the world.

Recent awards include the European Cultural Brand of the Year 2020, the European Orchestra Award, and a Cultural Diplomat of the Year Award at the Abu Dhabi CultureSummit.  In the last decade the EUYO has added to its enviable tradition with a series of innovative learning and performance programmes, helping to train its members from all 27 EU member states with the skills necessary to meet the challenges of 21st century society and audiences. A Musical Journey through Time, Space and Cultural Heritage Choosing music for the European Heritage Awards Ceremony is a rather challenging assignment: keeping it short, making it engaging and conveying a sense of history, culture and celebration. So we will hear renaissance dance music, baroque battle music and a rousing arrangement depicting the planet Jupiter as ‘the bringer of Jollity’. But to begin with, striking something of a diverse note, the ceremonial but also highly reflective ‘Fanfare No. 3 for the Uncommon Women’ by the noted US composer, Joan Tower. 9

Special Guest Alberto Toso Fei Alberto Toso Fei has deep roots in Venice. He is descended from a family of glassmakers in Murano, with a history reaching back to 1351. Toso Fei is a writer and essayist with a passion for history and he is an expert on Venetian legends. He has written more than 20 books that have been translated into several languages, including the graphic novel Orientalia, which was nominated for the Strega Prize. He is currently the Artistic Director of the MArCHESTORIE Festival, a celebration of the intangible cultural heritage of the Marche region, and of the Festival “Veneto: Mystery Shows”, which traditionally kicks off in November in one hundred locations in the Veneto region. Toso Fei’s skill as a storyteller marks him as a key player in the cultural life of Venice, while his extensive knowledge of the history of this fascinating city and its remarkable people has earned him the unofficial title of ‘the narrator of Venice’. His performances enliven recitals, lectures and online events, bringing the spirit and heritage of the city to life, in full colour. albertotosofei.it Facebook: @Veneziain1minuto Twitter: @AlbertoTosoFei Instagram: @AlbertoTosoFei

Fondazione Giorgio Cini The Fondazione Giorgio Cini was established by Count Vittorio Cini, in memory of his son Giorgio in April 1951 on the Island of San Giorgio Maggiore, Venice. Count Cini’s aim was to restore the ex-Benedictine monastery and the wider Island of San Giorgio Maggiore, and to create an international cultural centre that would re-integrate the island into the life of Venice. During its 70 years of history, the Fondazione has promoted countless social, cultural and artistic activities in a constant dialogue with other institutions and important representatives of Italian and international cultures. Today, the Fondazione is an internationally recognised cultural institution which continues to draw inspiration from its original vocation as a centre for the training of young Venetians, while at the same time playing a leading role as a center for studies and a venue for meetings and debates on contemporary issues. The Fondazione hosts exhibitions, research activities, study meetings and seminars, training and specialization courses in its artistic and monumental setting that includes masterpieces by Palladio and Longhena. The island is home to six academic institutes and two centres for study, as well as the ARCHiVe Center for Analysis and Recordings of Cultural Heritage in Venice, a research laboratory on new technologies applied to digitization, preservation and enhancement of cultural heritage.

Current planned performances include events in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Costa Rica, Germany, Kenya, The Marshall Islands, The Netherlands, Scotland, South Africa and South Korea.
