Welcome

Dear Members & Friends of Europa Nostra, It is a real pleasure to welcome you to Europa Nostra’s European Heritage Congress 2015 in Oslo. As usual, the Congress will bring together members of Europa Nostra and other representatives of public and private bodies committed to the safeguard of cultural and natural heritage in Europe. The Congress is being organised with the invaluable assistance and support of our country representation, Europa Nostra Norway, and our member organisation, Fortidsminneforeningen (the Society for the Preservation of Norwegian Ancient Monuments). Our Congress will offer you an inspiring platform for networking and broadening of horizons and for forging new partnerships and friendships. As such, the Oslo Congress is a key event of Europa Nostra’s Network project “Mainstreaming Heritage”, which is supported by the EU’s Creative Europe Programme.

W E L C O M E

We shall commence on 10 June with meetings of the Europa Nostra Board and of the Scientific Council. As usual, the main event will be the European Heritage Awards Ceremony, which will be held at Oslo’s City Hall upon kind invitation of Fabian Stang, the Mayor of Oslo, on the evening of 11 June. The ceremony is co-hosted by Tibor Navracsics, European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Youth and Sport, and Plácido Domingo, President of Europa Nostra. We are particularly pleased that HRH Crown Prince Haakon of Norway will honour the ceremony with his presence, and also that the Norwegian Minister of Climate and Environment,Tine Sundtoft will address the audience on behalf of the Norwegian Government. On the morning of 11 June the Awards Ceremony will be preceded by the Excellence Fair, a public event during which the laureates will give presentations about their winning achievements at the historic auditorium of Oslo University, Domus Academica.

H E R I T A G E

The 2015 Congress will also have a special focus on youth and cultural heritage. From 7 to 14 June Fortidsminneforeningen, in cooperation with Europa Nostra, organises a workshop for young craftsmen and women from across Europe on the traditional crafts and building techniques in wood. You will have the possibility to meet with the young participants of this workshop at some of the key public events of the Congress. Visits to a number of Oslo’s main attractions, including the world-famous Viking Ships, Folk Museum and Fram Museum are also part of the Congress programme.Furthermore,Europa Nostra’s Industrial and Engineering Heritage Committee has organised an excursion to Kistefos Pulp Mill in Jevnaker outside Oslo on 10 June. We very much hope that you will also enjoy the post-congress excursion on 14 June, which includes visits to the historically important Eidsvoll House and Timber Floating museum at Fetsund.

H E R I T A G E

Kistefos Traelsliberi, one of Norway’s largest grained wood pulp mills, was founded in 1889. In those days the forest was Norway’s most important natural resource, and in Kistefos thousands of timber logs were processed into woodpulp used in the European paper industry. It was used to produce cheaper newspapers and magazines, and thus reading materials became something everyone could afford. The production at Kistefos stopped in 1955, but most of the machinery and equipment were left in their original environment. The pulp mill is surrounded by a sculpture park offering art exhibitions during the summer months. Accompanying hosts are IEHC-members Pierre Laconte, David Morgan and Cyril Winskell, who will brief congress participants on the visit and on the Committee’s activities.

Our first stop will be at Eidsvoll House, a 2015 winner of the EU Prize for Cultural Heritage / Europa Nostra Awards (category Conservation), which plays a special role in the history of Norway. Eidsvoll House was the place where in 1814, 112 men, elected from different parts and levels of society, negotiated for several weeks the Norwegian Constitution and finally agreed on it on 17th May 1814. We shall have a guided tour of the house – the very first national monument of the country (1837) – and also enjoy the handsome park that surrounds the buildings. Continuing through traditional farming landscape, we will enjoy a lunch break at Veset Farm, a typical timber building from the first half of the 19th century. After lunch, we will continue to the unique Timber Floating Museum at Fetsund. The Fetsund Lenser’s lumber museum shows an original timber floating plant on the river Glomma. It is a national industrial heritage site, where we will have a guided tour along some of the most important installations of this fascinating museum located in a beautiful environment.
