est ISSUE #21 2016

Editor’s Letter Whether it is in interiors, or in fashion, our particular design predilection at Est adheres to the Wabi-Sabi philosophy that revels in the beauty of all that is natural. Warts and all.

In embracing the imperfect we accept the natural flaws in our own spaces - and in our own bodies - to celebrate the brilliance of a uniquely individual character that is like no other.

This months trend report shot on location in the Netherlands using natural lime paints that, by very design, celebrate a buildings individual character and charm, sets the tone for how we perceive true beauty in 2016. Sian MacPherson EDITOR IN CHIEF

THE IMPERFECT EMBRACE Consciously creating a room, or a home, that is both authentic and reflective of those that reside within, is the true definition of successful design. STYLING Anouk B | PHOTOGRAPHY Marjon Hoogervorst

Concept creator Anouk B has designed a series of visual stories in her Haarlem studio to reflect key interior looks. Using Bauwerk’s natural lime paint as a base note to set the rooms tone, we celebrate the beauty of the imperfect and the intrinsic integrity of an individual character that is unmanufactured and free. CEMENTED CALM In a celebration of both design and craftsmanship, interior designer Fiona Lynch has created a home that exudes style and sophistication in spades. PHOTOGRAPHY Sharyn Cairns

Surrounded by majestic oak trees, this home owned by builder Damian Baldi and his young family offers the perfect balance of both light and shade. Deft hands at creating interiors with mood and ambience, Fiona Lynch and her team have used the juxtaposition of opposing materials alongside one another to create a calming home with visual interest. Built by Baldi himself, the home uses large concrete panels to create internal walls for the open and expansive living areas within. Wanting to create a home that would grow with his family’s needs, Baldi commissioned Lynch to design the interior spaces to reflect and support family life and their passion for good design and craftsmanship. In choosing to create a layered sense of luxury, Lynch has successfully created a balance when it comes to the interior scheme. The effective use of mixed materials combined with a pale paint palette has efficiently softened the open plan living and kitchen areas. What could have been a cold and unforgiving space due to hard cement surfaces and vast open spaces has instead become a warm and inviting living room in which to curl up in. Sitting restfully against the mottled cement walls, painted oak cabinetry in the kitchen and living areas have been topped with a white Elba stone. Aged brass accents are used effectively to temper the scheme, adding both warmth and a sense of luxe to the rooms. A spattering of crimson tones add interest to the scheme while offsetting a colour palette favouring rich blues and emeralds when it comes to the furnishings. Refined and elegant, while simultaneously asserting strength and solidarity, this is a family home that has the uncanny ability to both bolster and relax the busy family that live here.

A CONTEMPORARY CONVERSION After purchasing an old barn in the Kortrijk region of Belgium, interior architects Frederic Kielemoes and Vanessa Cauwe collaborated with CAAN architects in a mission to convert the one time flax mill into a modern, contemporary home for their family. PHOTOGRAPHY Thomas De Bruyne | Cafeine

The collaboration between the two design studios has resulted in a harmonious union between the old and the new, thanks to the addition of a timber and glass clad pavilion designed to extend the buildings original footprint. Framing the view of the garden and surrounding fields, the pavilion reflects both the indoor and the outside landscape, offering picturesque vistas at every turn. In their home, Kielemoes and Cauwe have created a luxe rustic charm to what could be an otherwise austere interior. Polished concrete floors and raw cement walls have been softened by the use of pale oak cabinetry throughout and floor to ceiling windows draped in rich, jewel toned velvet. The design duos modern adaptation to their home highlights the sheer power of restraint when it comes to designing and styling a contemporary home.

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED Evoking a sense of timelessness and enduring elegance, this home renovation takes pride in honoring the heritage of the buildings original design. PHOTOGRAPHY Tom Blachford

Originally purchased for its Spanish mission style qualities, complete with masonry arches and timber and wrought iron detailing, the owners of this newly renovated home in Melbourne’s St Kilda have taken great care in respecting the buildings architectural heritage. Looking to update the formal layout of their home the owners engaged Meme Design to reconfigure the floor plan in order to achieve a spatial flow that would be more conducive to modern day living. This meant opening up rooms and installing new steel framed windows and doors, in order to create both private and shared zones when needed while also connecting the internal spaces with the outdoors. Taking care to preserve the original features of the building, new additions were made to both compliment and enhance the homes inherent character. Polished plaster walls, timber floors and custom designed cabinetry in solid American oak create a true sense of warmth. Handmade hexagonal clay tiles used on floors and walls intensifies the homes tactile appeal, while the use of black steel further augments the robust yet sophisticated scheme. Set within the heart of the house, the kitchen and adjoining living and dining areas have been generously opened up and encouraged to further extend out into the garden. Simple, structured and streamlined, the kitchen has been designed with a chalky, stone topped island bench that encourages a central gathering point in the home. It is the clever use of materials in this design scheme that effectively evokes a true sense of nurturing here.

CALIFORNIA DREAMING Sydney based design studio, Arent & Pyke are the masters of creating light, airy, livable spaces and their latest project involving the transformation of a traditional California Bungalow is no exception. PHOTOGRAPHY Felix Forest

Inheriting a typical bungalow floor plan that relies on a central hallway to connect the rooms at the front of the house, the Arent & Pyke team focused on renovating the existing rooms and adding unexpected nuances to the scheme. Creating a central hub for a family to come together and interact was a clear objective for the homes reconfiguration. The addition of the newly designed kitchen plays a pivotal role in connecting the dining and living areas while the clever design of the cabinetry ensures that much of the kitchen can be concealed when not in use. Well thought out and cleverly designed, the kitchen is full of unexpected surprises. Tucked away behind the cabinetry walls and doors is a modern, light filled bathroom and laundry. Proving design is in the detail, a breakfast nook lined in silver penny round mosaics shines like a hidden gem when no longer concealed behind cupboard doors.
