ISSUE 31 Editor’s Letter Is there any time of the year as simultaneously stress-filled yet sweetly nostalgic as the holiday season?

Melia Rayner MANAGING EDITOR

While managing the social calendar, braving the packed shopping centres and somehow trying to get everything “nicely wrapped up” in time for year-end may not have you feeling the Christmas cheer, there’s something about the end of the year that encourages us to retreat, relax and reflect on the year that’s gone by. These spaces may be spread out in geography, style and heritage, each offer a blank slate of sorts. From a home overhauled to bring more alignment with its natural surroundings to a family home turned weekend getaway, these are spaces that are as timeless as they are timely. As my last issue as Managing Editor at est, I can say it’s been an absolute pleasure working with the talented team that make this magazine run so well. I have no doubt the next person to sit in this seat will be a lucky individual indeed.

Up the ante in the afterhours style stakes with pieces that go from day to night, ensuring you stand out from the crowd for all the right reasons. Remember, we’re entering party season so it’s the right time of year to be a little daring without moving too far out of your comfort zone. Consider adding a contemporary spin to classic party pieces with silk, leather and a little shimmer to deliver maximum impact whether you’re uptown or downtown.

STEEL CALM ARCHITECTURE Faulkner Architects STYLING DZINE Concept and Amber Autumn ID PHOTOGRAPHY Joe Fletcher WORDS Sophie Lewis

A meandering trip down Miner Road at the fringe of Orinda, will lead you to a steep site intermitted by native oak trees. Not so long ago, a house sat here in the shade of its neighbouring oak trees and deeply out of touch with its surrounds. Now a steel sculpture has stolen its thunder and foundations, home to a family of four seeking a bit of extra space and an environmentally-orientated place to live.

EST ISSUE 30  |  FEATURED HOMES  |  35

For a couple both working in the sustainability sector, a home that ignored the ecological significance of where it stood just wasn’t going to cut it. Recognising the opportunity for design experimentation, they engaged Faulkner Architects to remodel for an energy-efficient family home specific to its landscape and climate, with minimal impact on it. In a bid to bring sustainability to the front, Faulkner Architects focused their energy on unique materials - namely the unique Cor-Ten steel. The durable, fire-proof, no-maintenance skin wraps the brutalist exterior and features prominently inside. Faulkner Architects director Greg Faulkner describes the “visually-changing” steel as the core of the connection between inside and out and as “rusting masses” that “refresh overtime it rains, just like the landscape”.

Left: Cor-Ten steel is a recurring base element throughout the home’s interior and exterior, chosen for both its sustainability kudos and unifying aesthetic factor.

“ Those big trees felt like refuge before

we even built anything. They’re a free material that became part of the house.

Director of Faulkner Architects, Greg Faulkner

The emphasis on natural patina was reflected indoors through the unfinished white oak on the walls, ceilings and floors. The cathedral glass opening in the living space is devoted to flirting with the immediate foliage, allowing dappled light to coat the space and retain warmth. This is also where the bones of the old home reveal themselves, in the concrete fireplace that was, according to Greg, the “structural and metaphorical base from which the rest of the home was built. This sustainable stronghold is a lesson in the synergy of environment and design, anchored by the existing and driven by the collaborative efforts of client and architect.

The Sweet Escape In the picturesque Yarra Valley, designer Leora Mendelson reinvents a 1970s family homestead as a sophisticated weekend getaway.

DESIGN Welcome To Here PHOTOGRAPHY Rochelle Eagle WORDS Melia Rayner

Just fifty minutes from Melbourne city, the Yarra Valley has long been a place of escape for both weekend warriors and those in more serious pursuit of a slower lifestyle. In local winery, restaurant and homestead Seville Estate, design-discerning city slickers may have found their ideal retreat. A family business with a firm emphasis on celebrating local craftsmanship and produce, the estate offers an authentic yet sophisticated way to experience the local landscape - and the jewel in its crown has to be the newly-restored Seville Homestead.

With its rolling green hills, winding roads and sprawling native bushland the Yarra Valley makes for a picturesque backdrop - and the ideal conditions for cold climate wines. The estate’s chief winemaker Dylan McMahon is the grandson of founders Peter and Margaret McMahon, and under his passion and expertise the estate has become a frequent awards-winner, mostly recently picking up the 2019 Winery of the Year award as chosen by the James Halliday Wine Companion. When the opportunity arose to reinvent the property’s homestead, originally built as his grandparents home in the 1970s, Dylan had just the person in mind - his wife, interior architect Leora Mendelson. As the founder and principal of interior design practice Welcome To Here, Leora had both the technical background and the unique context for reimagining the family home to welcome new friends. Nestled between the vineyard and winery, the lovingly restored homestead now boasts space to sleep eight people, an enormous communal kitchen, expansive living and dining areas, and a private swimming pool.

Leora made the most of local designers and makers in the furnishings for the homestead, sourcing handcrafted tables, cabinetry and accessories throughout. Signature pieces like the Made by Morgen dining set and the Ross Gardam wall lights add a contemporary detail to the spaces, which are characterised by base materials such as timber, whitewashed brick walls and stone. There is a sense of pride throughout the homestead; of both the surrounding landscape that underlines the design and the lifestyle it celebrates. We rarely need an excuse to get away for the weekend here at est, and Seville Homestead makes it oh-to-easy with its character-filled design, comfortable spaces and award-winning wines. Oh, and did we mention the restaurant (also recently redesigned by Leora) showcases seasonal produce from neighbouring farms and the estate’s own vegetable garden? Suddenly a weekend at Seville Estate doesn’t seem long enough indeed.

POLISHED TO PERFECTION

A light-filled, three-storey home of minimalist elegance with a penchant for flawless craftsmanship reflects on its Victorian past.

DESIGN CM Studio / STYLING Alexandra Gordon PHOTOGRAPHY Prue Ruscoe / WORDS Megan Rawson

A considered and crafted approach takes the lead in this reworked 18th century terrace in Sydney’s Paddington neighbourhood. Unified by CM Studio’s overarching design philosophy that “beauty can be found in simplicity” Hargrave House is both pared-back and elegant, but best of all it’s an accolade to the finer details that lie inside. From the marble-on-marble bathrooms, ornate fireplaces, wall panelling and brass details throughout, there is no element of Hargrave House that hasn’t been thoughtfully designed and impeccably finished. A showcase of natural materials and a lesson in layering using tone and texture, this terrace is a polished example of how to create a contemporary home in a heritage setting.

While the exterior was designed to fuse with its heritage surrounds, the interior introduces a juxtaposition of timelines. Striking a balance between celebrating the old and embracing the new, CM Studio applied an inverted layering technique to the home’s interior. The private quarters on the uppermost level of the home reflects the buildings’ former grandiose heritage, with the ground level engaging a more contemporary, open-plan kitchen, dining and living zone. The middle level creates a bridge between these two and binding it all together is a central spiral staircase featuring a custom solid oak handrail and accents of burnished brass that connects each level.

Above: The home’s monochrome palette is softened by accents of warm leather and sleek marble, while steel-framed doors make a striking doorway to the courtyard outside.

Our favourite showstopping spaces include the custom banquette dining area designed by Jonathan West; a harmonious mix of creamy leather and timber that is beautifully complemented by Thonet chairs and an Apparatus Twig 5 pendant overhead. The master bathroom in all its marble splendour adds an unexpected element of opulence, and the cleverly hidden bar downstairs provides a modern touch.

An earthy, yet sophisticated palette featuring tones such as clay, olive and a deep oceanic blue highlights the contemporary furnishings and while durable materials including timber, leather, brass, linen and velvet create a connecting harmony throughout. Rising from its 1800’s Victorian bones to emerge fully-formed for modern living, this home has been given an underlying simplicity and a generosity of space by the talented local studio.
