St Leonards Festival

WELCOME… AmicusHorizon and Hastings Borough Council are working together to improve and convert run down homes in St Leonards. We’ve already refurbished 12 homes for local people and have more properties in the pipeline. We’re helping members of the local community to develop their skills and gain work by creating apprenticeships and employing local people. We’re also helping to tackle anti social behaviour, street drinking, begging and substance misuse through our work with partners. And we’re improving the appearance of the town centre by working with the St Leonards Town Team. To find out how you and your community are benefiting from this exciting project, please visit: www.amicushorizon.org.uk/CoastalSpace

Barefoot Opera, renowned for strong production values, tight ensemble work and lively interpretation, bring their unique style to Carmen by Bizet as a taster for their full production in Hastings this Autumn. Spot brilliant young soloists at the start of their careers, singing Carmen’s most famous arias, including the Toreador song and the Habenera – with an unexpected surprise. They will be accompanied by a mini-band of keyboard, accordion and double-bass. Musical direction is by Lesley Anne Sammons. Directed by Jenny Miller, assisted by Rebecca Hanbury, with costumes by Finola Woolgar.

George Humphreys, one of Britain’s most promising young baritones, has appeared in concerts around the world including The Duke in Sciarrino’s The Killing Flower (Music Theatre Wales) and Marullo in Verdi’s Rigoletto (English National Opera). He is jetting in from Austria for the Garden Party!

‘George Humphreys’ Duke is wonderfully convincing as the handsome sensualist.’ Tim Ashley, The Guardian, July 2013

Susannah Appleyard, soprano, was born in Hastings and graduated from Trinity Laban, London. She regularly features with Hastings Philharmonic Choir and Opera South East and has worked with composer Orlando Gough on Sea Tongue, commissioned to mark the re-opening of the De La Warr Pavilion.

Opera South East is now in its thirtieth year and continues to thrill audiences with outstanding productions. For the Garden Party, they will be performing classic opera choruses. This October Opera South East will bring a touch of Spain to the White Rock Theatre with a full-scale production of Bizet’s Carmen.

We are delighted to welcome Osadia Hair Art from Barcelona exclusively for the Garden Party. They will be decorating the heads of our audience with fantastic opera-inspired sculptures.

‘They create fantastically strange hair-dos on willing and brave audience members.’ BBC

‘I loved working with Opera South East. It is vital that young singers have the opportunity to perform roles with companies who perform to such a high standard and who are so welcoming and friendly.’ Hannah Mason (Cinderella, La Cenerentola, 2007 and Santuzza, Cavalleria Rusticana, 2009)
