a Big?

Big Local is a lottery funded, resident-led, ten year project, improving 150 places in England, including North East Hastings. The project aims to promote the talents, ambitions and skills of local individuals, groups and organisations, helping them to make a positive difference in their community. The result is a better place to live, work and relax. This edition of the Big Local magazine highlights some of the work Big Local is doing in North East Hastings and focuses on local educational opportunities.

The resident-led partnership would like to thank Ron Bennett who resigned as Chair of the partnership this summer. Ron has been instrumental in establishing Big Local and developing the action plan. Good luck for the future Ron! The partnership is currently led by its two vice chairs, Gary Storer and Suzy Strachan-Lawrence. New officers will be elected at the AGM in December.

What is Horizons?

Horizons offers free, communitybased learning to adults of all ages from disadvantaged communities in the Hastings area. Horizons has been working with Big Local and residents in North East Hastings. ‘I have a lot of paid work now which has improved my occupational and social lifestyle. It has also helped with my confidence and well-being.’ Horizons Learner, 2015

‘Open Sesame supports children’s creative development and nurtures creativity in the adults who care for them…’ Sally Staples, Cultural Strategy Manager, East Sussex County Council

What has been happening in East Hastings?

OPEN SESAME What is Open Sesame?

A two year programme of arts and culture for very young children (0–2) and children with special needs. Galleries, museums and other arts venues work with the Children’s Centre and families to encourage creative early years learning. The project is led by East Sussex County Council, managed by Culture Shift (who received a Big Local Small Grant last year) and delivered by Octopus Inc with additional funding from Arts Council England.

12

Jerwood Gallery partnered with East Hastings Children’s Centre. Staff members from both organisations worked with artists from Octopus Inc and attended a Level 4 course at University of Brighton to develop their creative practice for early years, particularly for 0–2 year olds. Activity with families took place at the Children’s Centre along with well attended sessions at Jerwood Gallery. The majority of families had not visited the gallery before, and were pleased to know that babies were welcome. Many took away practical ideas for using everyday materials for fun, creative activities for early years development. Jerwood Gallery hopes to secure funds to continue to work with children and families through the Children’s Centre.

How do I find out more? If you have any questions about Open Sesame, contact Culture Shift on 01273 478558 or email hello@cultureshift.org.uk

Eggtooth Project has been funded by Big Local Small Grants

EGGTOOTH PROJECT working in local schools

Hastings Academy is OFSTED rated ‘good’ and described by Principal, Michael Brett, as ‘a friendly and vibrant school that has state of the art facilities’. It has a commitment to ensure individual students reach their full potential. One way they do this is through an innovative educational project, called The Eggtooth Project.

What is Eggtooth?

The 3 year Eggtooth Project is a therapeutic and experiential course for young people from year 9 to 11 (age 13–16). Pupils take part in Eggtooth during school time, alongside their usual curriculum. Eggtooth also runs Hastings Academy’s two week Summer School. Mini Eggs, aimed at Key Stage 2 & 3 pupils has been running at Ore Village Primary Academy and Castledown Primary School.

Who is Eggtooth for?

Eggtooth is designed for teachers, students, pupils and their parents.

‘By approaching education via safe, fun, creative and challenging activities, led by responsible, professional adults, Eggtooth encourages participants to be brave, take risks and excel in and out of school.’ Laura Clarke, Director

What do students do at Eggtooth?

Participants take part in activities designed to help them build life-skills and develop their unique strengths. Activities include one-to-one coaching, outdoor education at Mallydams, drama, song writing, performance film-making, art, cooking, training with Webbe’s restaurants and East Sussex Fire and Rescue What is most unique to Eggtooth is personal development training. This is done through group process sessions run by a qualified psychotherapist.

Getting parents involved

Big Local has funded Eggtooth’s Power of Parents course at Ore Village Primary Academy. This course trains parents in Attachment Theory. It also creates fun, activities for parents and their children to enjoy together both in and out of school.

Local resident ALAN TURNER says… “I’ve lived at my current home for 31 of my 70 years in the Ore Valley area.

14

Like so many towns, Ore has its fair share of issues with litter and dog poo. So when Big Local asked for a litter picking rep, I put myself forward. I joined Big Local to add my views to the picture and help make Ore a better place to live. I put out a notice on Big Local’s facebook page, and on Arrow FM for people to help me with litter picking. I also put something in the local newsletter and on the noticeboards in the Community Centres. Soon the community joined in. Children from Downs Farm started helping. It’s not a set group of people – I just get joined by whoever is available that day. Big Local provides us with the tools. It would be great if more families and young people got involved. After we’ve done a litter pick, I walk around to see how clear the area is. It’s satisfying to see what a difference we make to Ore.” To join in with a future litter pick, contact Mike Thompson at Amicus Horizon on 0800 121 6060.
