Angela Young Angela Young’s exhibition at Hastings Arts Forum in June 2013 is her maiden exhibition of paintings. Although she has been an artist all her life, she is comparatively unknown. Nevertheless, she attracts comments such as “Hastings best kept secret”, “fantastic, refreshing work”, “nice, delicate touch” and “a leap of the imagination”. Angela was born in Gravesend in 1963 and moved to St Leonardson-Sea in 1986, via a spell in Ashford, Kent. Her parents met at college, though neither made a career in art. She remembers her mother, Anna, was continually sketching and painting and she has always been a major inspiration. On reaching the age of 20, Angela found work as a traditional upholsterer and later lived and worked with an antiques restorer. In the 1990s Angela enrolled in a part-time Foundation course at Hastings College. Apart from a brief period in the mid-90s, when she worked in a textile design studio, Angela worked on various painting projects involving restoration and decoration of antique furniture, metal and glass. This resulted in commissions for paintings and work as an assistant to a landscape artist. When not painting, Angela spends time walking, collecting fossils, books, antiquities and antique items. She likes to spend this time with her partner Jerry and their dog. Harry Lyons

My paintings The underlying thread of my work is water along with the process of ageing. I try not to plan, preferring to work by intuition. Starting with colour, tone and light, I may include fragments of forms that are usually ancient or taken directly from nature. Open to interpretation by the observer, they are formed from memories, feelings and observations. My paintings can take years to produce as they are often re-worked and added to many times with thin layers of paint and glazes. Angela Young
