Claire de Lune: The Lynden Music Festival Welcomes All

Enjoy free entertainment on Wed., Oct. 5 at noon, inside the Dutch Village Mall where Duo Lido featuring Mrs. Mikki-Broersma and Gaye Davis will share the stage with boogie-woogie pianist Matthew Ball (above middle) and visiting Dutch horn player/vocalist Folkert-Hans (above left). Above right: At 8pm (Oct. 8) The Rocky Vasalino Show takes the stage at Homestead Golf and Country Club playing classic rock with comedy, costumes and stage antics for $15 per person. Everyone is invited to At The Hop: Dance Night For All Ages!, a free party at the Lynden Skateway on Sat., Oct. 8 at 6pm featuring the bands Mikki Mouse & the Rock House (below) and Westfalia.

by Justin Hawkinson More than two-dozen musical acts from across the globe will be filling the concert halls of Lynden the week of October 5-9. The Lynden Music Festival is going into its eighth year, and this time will include more venues and a wider variety of musical styles than ever before. As a tribute to Lynden matriarch Claire vg Thomas and a well-known song by Claude Debussy, the concert series is affectionately referred to as “Claire de Lune.” Ms. Thomas was a highly accomplished Lynden native who toured the world as a concert pianist and choir conductor. She contributed to the founding of the Lynden Pioneer Museum, The Whatcom Symphony Orchestra, and the theater inside Dutch Village Mall that bears her name. Although she passed away in 2008 (the first year of the Lynden Music Festival), her impact is still felt in the community, and her story is tied to many musical events in the area. The 125-year celebration of Lynden history is a major theme this year and in the wake of the June fundraising dinner / birthday party, things are just beginning to heat up. Festival organizer Terhi Mikki-Broersma described the festival as “really busy!” She also said, “We want to reach all ages and all types, so we bring music to elderly homes, schools, bars, coffee shops, etc. We are hoping our audience will find their favorite genres as well as try some new things!” The Opening Ceremonies will commence at noon on Wednesday, October 5 with three fun acts performing for no charge. Duo Lido featuring Mrs. Mikki-Broersma and Gaye Davis will share the stage inside the Dutch Village Mall with boogie-woogie pianist Matthew Ball and visiting Dutch horn player/vocalist Folkert-Hans. After that set, music fans will have the choice of two dozen other concerts in several different venues around the town

during the next five days. Performances are staggered so people can go from one show to another and experience the town while being entertained by acts of different styles, instruments and influences. There will be a bassoon quartet, a “little-big band,” opera, ethnic jazz, country music, folk songs, and stories. From solo acts, to choirs, and even rock bands, this festival has something for everyone, and it is hoped that if people come for one act, they will stay to see another while in town. Local hotels are taking reservations for visiting fans to celebrate the city and explore the hotspots including The Waples Room, The Mill, Chandara House and Overflow Taps. Several (but not all) of the events are free including At The Hop: Dance Night For All Ages!, a party inside the Lynden Skateway on Saturday at 6pm. This is the first time that the Lynden Music Festival has featured an all-ages dance, and the bands Mikki Mouse & the Rock House as well as Westfalia are staffed by Lynden and Lynden Christian High School students. Another highlight is The Rocky Vasalino Show, a band started decades ago by Lynden natives Ted and Jim Neufeld. They were invited back after impressing the audience at the 2015 festival. At 8pm they will be playing classic rock with comedy, costumes and stage antics for $15 per person at Homestead Golf and Country Club. The festival will end at 3pm on Sunday, October 9 with a finale at Judson Hall inside Lynden Middle School. The acts will include KVOS broadcaster/vocalist Greg Otterholt and another set by FolkertHans. Catalyst, a duo from North County Christ the King Church, and Kings Men of Song, a choir of local gospel enthusiasts, will finish off the concert with inspirational music honoring the city’s Christian influence.

Whatcom Symphony Orchestra presents Intersections by Courtney Kendall Whatcom Symphony Orchestra (WSO) opens its 41st season with the theme Intersections. Music director Yaniv Attar describes this season’s intersections as classic pieces mixed with lesser known works and, of course, the intersections found between our local orchestra players and the internationally known musicians joining them. The season begins October 16 with All Tchaikovsky, featuring Seattle-born violinist Simone Porter who, though only 20, has performed with many prestigious orchestras. Next, on November 20, will be Beethoven’s Pastorale, a reflection on the personal and pastoral experience, with Alex Klein on oboe. December 4, the WSO will present Holiday Magic, an afternoon of holiday choral favorites including “The Snowman.” The new year will open (Jan. 29) with Harmony from Discord, WSO’s series

presenting composers of the Holocaust era whose works were created in the face of oppression. In its second year, Harmony from Discord celebrates the power of music to overcome the darkest sides of the human experience. This year, popular violinist Jennifer Koh will be joining WSO for her third time. Last year’s Harmony from Discord debut was wildly successful, and, with the addition of Jennifer Koh, this season’s promises to be even better. An All-American Celebration will continue the season on March 26, featuring Christopher Guzman on piano. Well-known

works of the American canon will be this show’s focus, including Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue. Closing the season will be Joshua Roman Returns! on May 21. Deserving of his exclamation point, Joshua was only 22 when appointed principal cello for the Seattle Symphony and continues to amaze audiences with his prowess. He played at the 2015 Bellingham Festival of Music, and his return to play with the Whatcom Symphony Orchestra is sure to draw a crowd. All shows are on Sundays at 3pm at the Mount Baker Theatre. Ticket information can be found online at www.mountbakertheatre.com or by calling the ticket office at 360-734-6080.

On January 29, 2017 WSO will present their second concert in the “Harmony from Discord” series, which emphasizes the power of music to transcend even the darkest of human experience. The concert will feature Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E minor, Eliezel Elpers’ On the Rivers of Babylon, and Schulhoff’s Symphony No. 2 with guest violinist, Jennifer Koh. Skagit Reads: He Named Me Malala –

He Named Me Malala is a portrait of Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Malala Yousafzai, who was targeted by the Taliban and severely wounded by a gunshot. The then 15-year-old was singled out, along with her father, for advocating for girls’ education, and the attack on her sparked an outcry from supporters around the world. Documentary filmmaker Davis Guggenheim shows us how Malala, her father Zia, and her family, are committed to fighting for education for all girls worldwide. Rated PG-13. Showing on Thurs., Oct. 6 at 6:30pm at Lincoln Theatre (712 S. 1st St., Mount Vernon). Free admission. More info: 360-755-0760, jennyc@burlingtonwa.gov or www.skagitreads.org.

Mount Baker Theatre is Your Local Hub for Live Entertainment

by April Metz de Montiel Mount Baker Theatre has been searching the world over to create journeys you can experience by walking through the front door; in fact, this season’s brochure has been designed as a passport! Amy Guerra, Mount Baker Theatre’s Marketing Director, said that part of the mission of the theatre is to “ensure local access to diverse performing arts entertainment.” This season will allow locals to sample artists from India and Brazil, Ireland and Italy, as well as local Bellingham artisans. Back by popular demand, Canadian Jesse Cook’s own personal travels were the inspiration for his international style of classical guitar music. International Guitar Night is a chance to see the greatest masters in today’s world of acoustic guitar music, including Italy’s Luca Stricagnoli, Brazil’s Chrystian Dozza and India’s Debashish Bhattacharya.

The Time Jumpers aren’t making music for the fame and fortune that comes along with the territory— they are simply doing it because they love it. Made up of ten of Nashville’s most legendary musicians, this band is a must see for western swing/ traditional country music. (Jan. 15, 2017)

Journeying from the Far East, the Shaolin Warriors will be a stunning show, demonstrating the mastery of skill that combines kung fu, gymnastics and theatrical choreography. Those in favor of a Mediterranean getaway, may immerse themselves in the musical Mamma Mia! ABBA’s legendary music scores this musical tale of life and love in the Greek Isles. In December, the Emerald Isle sends us The Irish Tenors: We Three Kings. They will perform a repertoire of standards and traditional holiday music. In February, The Irish Rovers with We Banjo 3 will reel you

Top left: The Jive Aces are the UK’s #1 jive & swing band and renowned worldwide for their high-energy spectacular show. Vocalist Cassidy Janson was in the original London cast of Wicked and is currently playing Carole King in Beautiful. (Nov. 17, 2016) Middle: From China, the internationally acclaimed Shaolin Warriors (shown here Tiger Boxing) will perform their breathtaking theatrical Kung Fu show on Feb. 3, 2017. At right: Experience silent films the way they were meant to be seen! Guest organist and historic preservationist Dennis James diligently researches each film to provide period-authentic live music and sound effects on the mighty Wurlitzer pipe organ. away with a “groundbreaking mixture of Irish music and old-time Americana and bluegrass.” And a visit off the coast of Cornwall with The Pirates of Penzance promises to charm with the timelessness of a Gilbert & Sullivan musical. A world excursion would never be complete without a trip to the Big Apple and a tour of Broadway. New York City High School students seek their destiny in the blockbuster musical Fame. Winner of Best Musical and eight Tony Awards, Once, is a magical story of street musicians where the actors play live instruments on stage. From the American Southwest we have MoMIX Opus Cactus, inventing adventure for the whole family and creating enchanting and humorous images of the Sonoran Desert. From Texas, Houston Ballet II will perform well-known classical pieces as well as contemporary works by one of the world’s leading choreographers, Stanton Welch. Further east, Nashville contributes some of its most famous country music stars. The Time Jumpers, featuring Vince Gill, Kenny Sears, Ranger Doug Green and Paul Franklin will provide an impressive star-filled night for those who love country music. Finally, New Orleans Jazz musician Wynton Marsalis will be bringing his musical magic to the stage, as well as North Carolina’s Ben Folds, who is touring solo with what he calls a fresh new “chamber rock” sound. Garrison Keillor has told many tales of the Minnesota Prairie and people of Lake Wobegon. He continues his comedic and poignant legacy through his storytelling talents. Laughter is contagious and the Ladies of Laughter, Stephanie Blum, Dana Eagle and Alycia Cooper, will keep you doubled over! Alton Brown Live: Eat Your Science combines all the senses with his Entertainment News Northwest ~October 2016

ability to mix comedy and a multimedia presentation of music, food and science. A special experience offered by the Mount Baker Theatre is the Silent Film Series. Essentially a trip through time, composer Dennis James underscores early 20th century black and white films on the theater’s original pipe organ. The upcoming silent film, Peter Pan, (1924), is perfect for the whole family on a rainy Sunday afternoon. Also playing: Hamlet, (1921) and Ben-Hur, (1925) Another time travel opportunity is One Night of Queen, performed by Gary Mullen and the Works. This event recreates the showmanship of Freddie Mercury and emulates the band’s greatest hits. The Midtown Men will take you back to the 1960s with music by the Beatles, the Four Seasons and Motown. Arlo Guthrie: Running Down the Road Tour is a celebration of the 1960s and 1970s “far-out” generation featuring a soundtrack of his greatest hits. And yet another stop on memory lane; Jive Aces: Jump, Jive and Wail, will swing you to your feet as they croon and move to the songs of the Rat Pack, Bobby Darin and Ella Fitzgerald. These varied opportunities to experience the outside world are just part of what Mount Baker Theatre has to offer. It plays host to national touring groups, such as the upcoming Beach Boys and In My Life: A Musical Tribute to the Beatles. This historic theatre also provides performance space for local organizations such as The Whatcom Symphony Orchestra and Northwest Ballet. Finally, Mount Baker Theatre is planting a legacy in the 17,000 school children it reached last year via The Wade Bennett King Educational series. This arts curriculum is paramount in partnering with our local schools to provide performing art education and extracurricular opportunities. Safe travels and we hope to see you at the show! Fristad went to sea for months at a time, almost always the only woman on board; in fact, she was the only woman for miles. She fended off drunks, heard the

confession of many an infidel, and saw men reduced to tears by their drive to make a living on a relentless ocean. She fell asleep to the sounds of humpback whales and bathed in hotsprings under northern lights. Erin reads from her new collection of poetry and prose, The Glass Jar, on Sat., Oct. 1 at 7pm at Village Books in Fairhaven. You can learn more about Erin at www.erinfristad.com.
