Kuinka with the T Sisters at McIntyre Hall by Osa Hale Modern audiences probably associate the string band with country and folk music. While many traditional songs in these genres make great use of the twangy energy of string bands, the potential for those bands to grow and branch out is enormous. Kuinka and the T Sisters are two bands that embrace that potential, using it to create joyful and distinctive music. Thanks to the Washington State Arts Commission and the National Endowment for the Arts, audiences at McIntyre Hall will have a chance to experience the inventive and jubilant music of these two bands on Friday, November 10. Kuinka is four musicians: brothers Nathan Hamer (ukulele, vocals, mandolin) and Zach Hamer (lead guitar, percussion, vocals, harmonica), Jillian Walker (cellos, vocals, percussion), and Miranda Zickler (vocals, synthesizer, banjo, rhythm guitar, percussion). Together, they’ve been exploring the outer limits of Americana and string music since 2014. Described as “joyous folk pop” by NPR Music, the band explains their sound by saying they’d love for their music to be a soundtrack to adventure. Nida Tautvydas, executive director of McIntyre Hall, explained that the band’s return to the venue was a special treat. “Over the last several years they’ve developed their sound and gained a cohesive feel,” Tautvydas said. “It will be a great night of music shared with family, friends, and the community.” The T Sisters are Erika, Rachel and Chloe, backed up by Steve Height (upright bass), Andrew Allen Fahlander (mandolin/guitar), and Marlon Aldana (drums). The sisters’ lifetime love of collaborating on music combined with their vocal and instrumental talents result in harmonies that range from toe tapping to breath taking. They describe their songs as honoring traditional American folk while infusing it with elements of soul, pop, and doo-wop. Tickets for the performance are available online or at the McIntyre Hall box office. Reserved seating tickets are $20, and box seats are $30. Doors open at 7pm and the show starts at 7:30pm. by Margaret Bikman Bellingham’s George Drake has received accolades and honors from organizations all over the world, although he’s the first to tell you he’s not a real “hero.” But in an interview with KOMO News in 2013, he said this: “I ask myself, ‘What makes Georgie run?’ And I guess part of it was, early on I was involved in the Boy Scouts, and the Boy Scout ethos is service,” Drake said. “I grew up with that ethos and I still believe in it.” Drake has been a member of Bellingham City Council, director of the office of international programs at Western Washington University, and created the Korean War Children’s Memorial in Bellingham, among dozens of other activities. Fifty years ago, George and Mary Ann Drake moved to Bellingham with their two sons, David and Todd. They travelled frequently, mainly Latin America, but also to Europe and Asia where they purchased many items of folk and fine art. Mary Ann

passed away early this year and in August, George, who is now age 87, moved to The Leopold Inn Retirement Residence. George faced the issue of what to do with their lifetime collection of art and artifacts, and decided to donate everything to the Whatcom Community Foundation. The proceeds from the sale will go to a fund for the support of public art in the community. The non-profit organization Sculpture Northwest will handle the sale. The goal of Sculpture Northwest is to generate $50,000 through this sale. The Whatcom Community Foundation Art Fundraiser will be open from 6-10pm on Fri., Dec. 1, during the monthly Downtown Art Walk in the Localgroup Studio, at 227 Prospect St. Admission is by donation to the Whatcom Community Foundation of $10 per person or $15 per couple, payable at the door, on opening night only. The sale continues from noon-5pm, Dec. 2 and 3; and from 3-7pm, Dec. 4 through 7. All works will be priced for immediate sale but those wishing to make an offer on works priced more than $100 can do so by placing an “or best offer” bid on a work, with a reserve price on all works over $100. The best offer at the reserve

price or greater will be announced after the close of the gallery Dec. 6. On Dec. 6, items not sold will be discounted 10 percent and on Dec. 7, they will be discounted 20 percent. Nothing will be sold for less than its “reserve” price. Included in the sale are several large ceramic pots by La Conner artist Clayton James; an etching by Bellingham artist Helen Loggie; and a large painting on hand-woven Peruvian textiles by Peruvian artist Wari Zarate Gutierrez. A large wood carving from Ching Dynasty China will be the prime work from China but also available will be a painting of chrysanthemums from the Chonqing Academy of Fine Arts. There will be several old Hudson Bay blankets, hand-woven rugs from Oaxaca, Mexico and teak furniture for the garden patio. In addition, you will find hundreds of lower-priced folk art and craft items collected from many nations that will make excellent gifts for family and friends. George Drake says “Your purchase will support the placement and maintenance of public art so be generous. Make this your year-end gift to the community.” For more on the life of George Drake, go to http://georgefdrake.org.

Daughters of Lilith Bellingham Premiere by Marla Bronstein On Sunday, November 12, 7pm, the First Congregational Church of Bellingham will host The Daughters of Lilith, a theatrical journey written in the tradition of the Midrash, and produced by Reverend Linda Allen, D.Min. This will be the first time this production is performed in Bellingham. Linda first imagined it as part of a writer’s retreat a few years ago. This spiritual journey of strong Biblical women in scripture uses music, dance, theater, images, poetry and puppetry to explore their individual stories. Allen’s narrator weaves these stories together and relates them to our current lives. Attendees will recognize women such as Mary Magdeline, Lot’s wife, Jesus’ mother Mary, and Eve. Other not-so-familiar characters include Lilith, Tamar, the unnamed bent-over-woman, and the woman with the flow of blood. The hour-long, production contains adult themes, told from a progressive viewpoint of spirituality, and accessible to any faith tradition. Not surprising, as I first met Rev. Allen at a folk music gathering Lilith and Eve in Eden. Artwork used with more than 20 years ago, much of her music is permission of the artist, Karla Gudeon. the basis of this production. Performers include current and former community members. Doors open at 6:30pm. Tickets may be purchased at the door for $15 and are available in advance at Village Books. This event is a benefit for Mt. Baker Planned Parenthood and the Love and Justice Project, a program of Northwest Youth Services. Representatives from both organizations will be in attendance to share information. Donations directly to the organizations may be sent to Northwest Youth Services (memo: Love and Justice Space) at 1020 North State Street, Bellingham, WA 98225. To support Mt. Baker Planned Parenthood, please visit their secure online giving form at www.ppaction.org/mbpp, or mail a check to 1509 Cornwall Avenue 98225. The Coats at Bellingham High School by Osa Hale Everyone loves celebrating the holidays with joyful music- listening to it, singing it, sometimes both at the same time! Among many beloved local traditions, the holiday season brings The Coats to Bellingham High School for a festive concert that inspires students as it entertains audiences. The Coats are Jamie (second tenor, musical director), Doug (baritone, manager), Keith (first tenor), and Kerry (bass). Together, these men form an a cappella group that is well known in the Pacific Northwest for their charismatic performances that blend tightly arranged music and engaging comedy. Their unique talent has led them to sharing the stage with acts including Gallagher, The Beach Boys, Jay Leno, Trisha Yearwood, and Eddie Money. They’ve also spent nearly a decade working and performing with local students, a beautiful mentorship that makes the holiday performance shine even more brilliantly. Before the show, The Coats will be rehearsing with the advanced small choirs of Bellingham High School, Sehome High School, and Squalicum High School. Those small student choirs open the holiday show. They are followed by The Coats, who will continue to raise the energy and excitement in the room until the closing act, when the students will join the band onstage for a rousing finale. The concert will be taking place on Saturday, December 2, at 7pm in the Bellingham High School Performing Arts Center. Tickets are $15 until November 22, and $20 from November 24 onward. They are at Village Books in Fairhaven, the downtown Community Food Co-op, and the Bellingham High School ASB office during school hours. They will also be available at the door on the night of the event, as long as seats are open. A portion of the ticket sales will be donated, as is tradition with The Coats’ annual show. Women’s Work International Market by Virginia Darvill Lila grew up on the streets in Nepal. Sometimes her playmates disappeared. When she found out as an adult that they had been trafficked into slavery, she started a safe home for women and children in her hometown on the border with India. Now she lives in Lynnwood where she works as a translator and is the director of Women’s Protective Center Nepal. She sells the beautiful clothing and jewelry made by Nari Alliance, the learning center and workshop of WPC that provides recovery, training, and sustainable employment. Rita’s family moved to Northwest Washington from Peru. She is a social worker for SeaMar in Bellingham. Following her family tradition, she makes jewelry using natural materials from Peru and also imports alpaca items made by women’s co-operatives. A percentage of her sales helps support the Albergue Frida Heller that is a shelter and social service center for female cancer patients in Lima. Debbie went to Guatemala as a writer and volunteer and lived there for two years. She began working with Corazon de Mujer, a cooperative of war widows who weave scarves on backstrap looms. Her company, Corazon Scarves, sells their products and helps them design for the international market. She is the director of Amigas de Corazon, a nonprofit that oversees the business and raises funds to support the educational and economic projects of the cooperative. She now lives in Spokane. Following the advice of local friends from Oaxaca, Ginny went for a visit that turned into an ongoing relationship with Vida Nueva, a cooperative of women weavers in Teotitlan del Valle. A retired

Any income is reinvested or used to provide no interest business loans to the weavers. This diverse group of women became friends and partners, forming Women’s Work after a friend offered Ginny an empty storefront to use during the Mount Vernon Tulip Festival, and she looked for others to share the space. Carriage Rides and Father Christmas Usher in Fairhaven’s Winterfest by Margaret Bikman The Historic Fairhaven Association presents Fairhaven Winterfest from Nov. 24 through Dec. 23. The festivities begin Friday with the appearance of Father Christmas at 3pm at the gazebo at the corner of 10th Street and Harris Avenue near the Village Green, followed by the annual Holiday Art Walk and Open House from 5-8:30pm in the historic southside business district. The celebration continues at noon on Saturday with horse-drawn carriage rides and visits with Santa, a tree lighting, and live entertainment. “We are excited about both the traditional happenings of Fairhaven’s holiday season and the new events we have planned this year,” says Scott Ward, Fairhaven Winterfest chair. The new events for 2017 include Find the Elves Treasure Hunt, the Holiday Market on the Village Green and the Holiday Window Display Contest, in partnership with Sustainable Connections. The Tree Photo by Scott Ward. Lighting is on Saturday evening at the large pine tree in front of the Fairhaven Village Inn. Entertainment by the Bellingham Circus Guild and Bellingham High School’s Showstoppers precedes the lighting. Throughout the season, thousands of spectacular lights will fill the trees. The increased cost of Winterfest was not something that the Historic Fairhaven Association could have anticipated at the beginning of the year, so a fundraising campaign was put into action at the end of August. The need became evident when the planning committee decided to look into hiring a professional company to light the village with environmentally friendly LED lights. “In the past, all the lights were hung by a small group of volunteers,” explains Di Reinsch, committee member and owner of 1 Paperboat. “When we learned that the lights were just cut off the trees and thrown away at the end of the season, we knew that there must be a better way.” “With all the new additions, we have reached out to the business community, as well as to our neighbors and friends, for their help in supporting Winterfest,” says Ward. To date, $13,000 out of a $20,000 goal has been reached and the community support has been nothing short of fantastic, says Ward. If you would like to donate to Fairhaven Winterfest visit: www.gofundme.com/FairhavenWinterfest. For more information and a full schedule of events, visit www.fairhavenwinterfest.com or contact Scott Ward at scott@currentandfurbish.com, 206-696-2671.

Christmas in the Cabins: Ferndale’s Old-Fashioned Christmas by Margaret Bikman Linda Harkleroad, who coordinates Ferndale Heritage Society’s annual OldeFashioned Christmas, says the mission of the organization is “to educate the community on the history of Whatcom County.” Members don pioneer costumes to greet visitors of all ages to experience how our ancestors enjoyed the Christmas holidays in Pioneer Park’s historic 15 log cabins. The newest renovated cabin, the Van Buren, will be open for display this year, set up as Ferndale’s first bank. This year’s event takes place Dec. 1, 5-9pm; Dec. 2, 1- 9pm; and Dec. 3, 1-4pm at the park, at the foot of Cherry Street. Harkleroad says that “There are cabin ‘owners’ who have been involved since the first event in 1992 and there are ‘newbies’ who have only been involved in the last 10 years or less. Old traditions and new ideas are what keep this event fresh each year.” This is the 25th anniversary of the event, Photo by Linda Harkleroad. with the theme of “Olde-Fashioned Christmas Silver Anniversary: Preserving Our Heritage for 25 Years.” The individual cabins will be offering crafts like silver bells, bottles, snowflakes, pinecones, stars and spoons. Ann Jones, who’s been volunteering for the event for six years, says “There is nothing like being in a historic village seeing people dressed in period costumes and doing things that one would see over 130 years ago, all centered around the celebration of Christmas. It’s like stepping into a dream! Kids also love seeing the huge draft horses pulling hay wagons around.” Volunteer Jodie Beatty says going from cabin to cabin keeps kids’ interest, with a craft or activity in each. “Writing a letter to Santa in an old schoolhouse and getting to mail it in an old post office is fun for kids and parents. It’s a great way to start off the holidays remembering how our ancestors grew up and really focusing on the meaning of holidays.” The Mount Baker Toppers will be caroling throughout the park at various times and the Non-Stop Carolers will be caroling at 2pm on Saturday. Visitors can take a festive horse-drawn carriage ride through downtown Ferndale and at the end of the day; stop by the Tillicum House for holiday cookies and warm beverages. “I think grownups like the magic that is created by all the volunteers in the park and seeing the wonder in their children’s eyes,” says Jones. Admission is $4 adults and $3 children. For details, call 360-384-6461 or go to www.ferndaleheritagesociety.com. If you’ve not attended the festival, you may be surprised to see not just gingerbread houses, but edible replications of buildings around town, like Whatcom Museum’s Old City Hall, a local school, a chess game, or book characters. The optional theme for 2017 is Northwest Adventures, but bakers can choose any other of the 10 categories if they wish (family, youth, seniors, and more). Everyone who attends the Holiday Port Festival will get a chance to vote for his or her favorite contest entry, and the winner becomes our People’s Choice Winner. The People’s Choice Winner receives a ribbon and a donated prize. Many of the entries are donated to a silent auction that runs throughout the festival. This year’s proceeds from the auction benefit Toys for Tots. The festival also features a food drive for Bellingham Food Bank. As part of their mission, they desire to be a teaching theatre with hands-on learning experiences, giving newcomers opportunities to perform alongside seasoned professionals. What they don’t have is a permanent home, so they find temporary accommodations for each play. The rehearsals are at the Fountain Church on Broadway. Business Partner Appreciation Breakfast – Join guest speaker Ken

by Barb Fuller Each month I peruse this magazine to seek out events that I can enjoy with friends and family. As I approach the holiday season, I think about how grateful I am for the people in my life. I am also thankful that I live in a place with an abundance of offerings of theater, dance, music, and more, that I can enjoy with those I love. There are many people in our community that are not as fortunate. They cannot afford the basic needs of food, clothing and shelter. According to the U.S. Census Bureau (2016) more than 14% of the people in Whatcom and Skagit Counties are living below the poverty level. Some don’t have the means to get the physical and mental health care they need. Within the borders of these two counties, there are hundreds of people who are homeless. Human Service charities provide networks of direct services to people in need. They feed our hungry, strengthen our communities, shelter our homeless, care for our elderly, and nurture our young. I have compiled a list of some of the numerous agencies in our area. Please consider giving to one of these charities or another of your choosing. Together, we can help our neighbors in need.
