Northwest Ballet Theater Presents Alice in Wonderland

by Osa Hale Few stories take the reader on a journey into a fantastical world quite like Alice in Wonderland. From the moment the heroine follows that white rabbit down into Wonderland, she and the audience are swept away by kooky characters and surreal landscapes. All this makes Alice in Wonderland the perfect tale to be told in the form of exquisitely choreographed dance, in a production put on by Northwest Ballet Theater. Northwest Ballet Theater has put on many stunning productions in recent years, and a big part of that is thanks to choreographer John Bishop. Of course, the dancers are the ones who cast a spell over the audience, and Bishop says this performance will be no different. There are several leads who will enchant the viewers and bring them into Wonderland. “I cast Julia Schwartz [as Alice] because I needed a dancer who not only had a commanding technique, but who could captivate the audience with her acting and understanding of choreography,” Bishop said. “Sophia Kongshaug was the logical choice [for the role of the Cheshire Cat] because of her strength in dancing modern, as well as ballet, for years. She seems to be both everywhere and nowhere, slipping around every corner of the stage.” Two of the other core leads are dancers who have been dancing in Bishop’s ballets for the past ten years: Hailey Forsberg as the White Rabbit, and Chloe Johnston as the Queen of Hearts. Both are fitting perfectly into their roles, Bishop says. “[Johnston’s] movement and facial expressions are perfect for the part,” he raved. And Forsberg as the White Rabbit?: “She never has a subtle entrance or exit, and is a wizard at helping the storyline unfold. Her turns and jumps will literally have you in awe.” Audiences can look forward to even more exciting performances from Tweedle Dum & Tweedle Dee and the Mad Hatter. There will also be a romantic, show-

stopping pas-de-deux between Alice and the Knave of Hearts, danced by Ian Aegerter. All of the dancers will be performing choreography that Bishop has specifically created to have a surreal, dream-like quality, to sweep the audience away. Though the dancers will be bringing great life and emotion to the stage, Wonderland would not be complete without the fantastic set and costume design that is on display in this production. Traditional set pieces and painted backdrops are combined with video projection in an ambitious act of staging. The costumes, working in tandem both with set pieces and with the dancers’ own incredible range of movement, complete the gorgeous picture, Bishop says. “Karen Bakke came up with unbelievably whimsical backdrops, and Dave Wright and Dennis Grayer have added lighting and scenic effects that are imaginative and well thought out,” Bishop said. “Corinne Thorsen and the

rest of our costume team have put in so many hours to make each dancer feel free in their movement and have it properly express their individual role.” Anyone interested in being transported to Wonderland through the beautiful production being put on by Northwest Ballet Theater can find his or her way there at McIntyre Hall in Mount Vernon or at the Mount Baker Theatre in Bellingham. The McIntyre Hall performance will be on May 14 at 7:30pm. The Mount Baker Theatre will feature two performances, an evening show on May 21 at 7:30pm. and a matinee on May 22 at 2pm. Tickets can be purchased at the theaters’ respective box offices or websites, and will vary from $24 to $35, depending on seating.

We Are All “Merely Players”

by Iris Likkel Edward is an aging actor who suffers a stroke. He loses his ability to speak with others in traditional conversation – in fact, his only way of verbally communicating is by quoting Shakespeare. Merely Players is a play based on old Edward’s journey to rebuild functioning relationships with his family and it is both touching and humorous. It also attempts to bridge the gap between the city and the country, the theatre and the natural world. Scott Alan Andrews is the Mount Vernon playwright whose inspiration came from exposure to performances of the Skagit River Shakespeare Festival. His daughter was cast in a show, and the ride began. Andrews also caught the theatre bug, was cast in a couple of shows, and the evolution led to his reading most of the Shakespearean Canon, and the word “playwright” is now added to his resume. Andrews says, “At last count, I use quotes from 28 plays and 3 sonnets. Those lines and the modern dialog that surrounds them, I hope will delight audiences, both Shakespeare fans and those new to the Bard.” Andrews is currently working on his second play. His day job is as a local attorney, working in the environmental field. Three Key Productions will be presenting this play at the Firehouse Performing Arts Center in Fairhaven, May 13-15 and 20-22. Christopher Key plays the Edward role, and he says, “I knew I wanted to play the senile Shakespearean because I wouldn’t have to act.” Seriously, Christopher, you have become a major contributor to local stage entertainment, and along with the audiences, I am looking forward to another amazing original piece of theatre. On April 27, Christopher was awarded the prestigious Mayor’s Arts Award, and deservedly so. “All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players. They have their exits and their entrances; And one man in his time plays many parts. (W.S)

Entertainment News Northwest ~ May 2016

Above left: “Thou and I are too wise to woo peaceably.” Karen Edland and Christopher Key play battling exes in Merely Players. Above right: Nicole Winkler plays a Shakespearean actor, Gwen, who falls for Rob Fellows, Edward’s son. The world premiere by Mt. Vernon playwright Scott Alan Andrews opens May 13 at the Firehouse AC. Right: Claire Andrews plays Miranda Fellows and Christopher Key plays her grandfather Edward, an aging actor who has had a stroke and can only speak in Shakespearean quotations.

Miranda, Edward’s granddaughter, is played by Claire Andrews. She seems to be the only one who is able to communicate with the old man at first. Andrews describes one scene: “When Edward is taken to his son’s home to recover, Miri parks him in his wheelchair at the window as she goes out to fill the birdfeeder. When she sees him in the window, she begins Romeo’s lines from the balcony scene: “But soft, What light through yonder window breaks?” Edward answers her with Juliet’s lines, “O Romeo, Romeo wherefore art thou...” Rob Fellows, Edward’s son and birdwatcher is played by Glen Nelson Bristow, who reluctantly houses his ailing father. Lydia, Edward’s ex-wife, is played by Karen Edland. She is definitely not very receptive to her ex-husband’s attempts to woo her back with Shakespearean quotes and responds in modern English. “Lord, what fools these mortals be!” (W.S.) The cast is rounded out by other talented local actors. This is an opportunity for both Shakespeare fans and those who appreciate a good laugh and a heartwarming story. You don’t want to miss it.

Come With Me If You Want to Live – A brand-new, locally-written musical based on a certain famous ‘80s cyborg action thriller, with synthesizers and roller skates.

The Changing of the iDiOM by Justin Hawkinson The iDiOM Theater is beginning a new era with a major building project and corporate partnership in the heart of Bellingham. The project is called Sylvia Center for the Arts, and it is in the process of becoming a major part of the local performance community. Bellingham theater enthusiasts have been applauding plays at 1418 Cornwall Avenue for the last fourteen years. Starting with the 2016/2017 season, people will be able to find the iDiOM’s troupe of actors, writers and crew at 205 Prospect Street, the historic Cascade Laundry building. The location will need major renovations and the total budget of $1.4 million has been estimated. Some of the facade‘s remodeling and seismic upgrades are being handled by the landlord, but $550,000 is still needed to complete the ground floor and open operations. Donations, grants, ticket presales and other fundraising efforts are in full swing as the organization needs seed money to continue. With the iDiOM as the anchor tenant, Sylvia Center is intended to provide affordable and accessible space for all manner of plays, dance recitals, musical performances and meetings. Once construction is completed, Sylvia Center will contain two theater spaces, a café/bar, rehearsal space, and office/studio spaces for local nonprofits or performance-minded businesses. It is intended that all this new space be used to benefit the local artistic community and create social connections. People can get involved by checking out the website sylviacenterforthearts.org for updates and to make a tax-deductible donation. Any donation over $50 will come with “early membership benefits” for the first season in the new building. There is also a link for people interested in helping and volunteer meetings will be held every Saturday at 10am. The iDiOM Theater will continue to provide quality local theater on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays through the month of May and the first week of June, after which the Cornwall location will close. Fancy Pants Runway Challenge by Deborah M. Bernard Ragfinery, the reuse-based clothing mecca of Bellingham, presents this year’s contest: The Fancy Pants Runway Challenge. Contestants will sashay down the red carpet runway at the Leopold Crystal Ballroom on Friday, May 20 from 7-9pm, for judging (doors open at 6:30pm). DJ Alternative Fields will provide the audio backdrop for the event. Prizes will be given in three categories: (1) Most creative transformation. (2) Fanciest. (3) Best runway presentation. “In the spirit of fun, creative reuse, we’re bringing back the runway show that was such a hit last year,” Ragfinery manager Shan Sparling said. “We had so much fun and Nicki Lang, co-owner of Found such great community response from our Wedding Dress Leather Goods in Fairhaven, is Challenge last year. So when we got a pile of tux pants rising to Ragfinery’s Runway donated, the wheels started turning about how we could Challenge. Come to the turn this into our next runway challenge.” Runway Show to see these “Last year’s challenge really took on a life of its own and tuxedo pants and cocktail dress transformed into wearable art! showed us there was a community of artists in Bellingham hungry for this type of creative outlet. We’re going upscale on this one, folks, with a fancy venue, cocktails, and refreshments…the whole nine yards! When we say ‘fancy pants,’ we mean it,” said Dallas Betz, media specialist for ReUse Works, the parent organization of Ragfinery and Appliance Depot. Twenty-five contestants were given one pair of tuxedo pants and one cocktail dress for their $20 entry fee, and must use at least half of each garment to make a single, wearable creation that they will display in a public runway show. Ragfinery just keeps upping its game, as it meets the Subdued, but Exciting requirements of the community. Last year’s event was the repurposed wedding dress red carpet challenge. And two years ago, the contest required that each contestant take a Whatcom Transit Authority bus uniform and repurpose it into something awesome. Nicki Lang turned hers into lined, quilted, zip pouches, and won. Her two little boys declared her “coolest mommy ever” because part of the prize was that her picture was on a WTA bus. She went on to be the co-owner of Found, a leather goods store in Fairhaven that started with repurposed leather coats from Ragfinery. The 2015 Runway Challenge Runway Show.

Sean Humphrey House Hosts Cinco De Mayo Fundraiser by Marla Bronstein The Ninth Annual Cinco de Mayo event to benefit Sean Humphrey House (SHH) boasts a grand Mexican-themed fiesta with traditional dinner, exciting raffles and activities, and intriguing silent and live auctions. Executive Director Josh Grubb says this event is different from other fundraisers because “It’s a party! The casual fiesta’s focus is on fun.” Costumes are encouraged, and a limited number of maracas will be available. If Grubb gets his wish, you may see him dressed up as one of “The Three Amigos.” The event will take place on Saturday, May 7 at the beautiful 4-Point Sheraton Hotel on Lakeway Avenue in Bellingham. Presenting sponsor is Auto Haus. Ticket prices are $50 per person, and tables of 8 are available at $400 each. All proceeds from this event support the programs and services directed to the residents at Sean Humphrey House. In 1995, SHH welcomed its first residents, allowing them to maintain independent and fulfilling lives while having access to support services in order to remain healthy and combat HIV/AIDS. Currently, SHH is one of only two remaining houses in this state that provides services for this specific community of residents. Those suffering from HIV/ AIDS continue to experience discrimination in housing. Generally, the house is always full, Grubb says; they turn away an average of two applicants per month. “Once upon a time, people came to Sean Humphrey House to die; now they come here to live,” said Program Coordinator Jeanette Campagna. Even though previous prevention education has reduced the number of new diagnoses, current funding for prevention education has dropped, and with increased drug use among youth, Grubb expects the number of new diagnoses to climb again. For additional event information or to be involved with SHH and future events, contact Campagna directly at 360-733-0176 or jeanette@seanhumphreyhouse.org. If you or someone you know is living with HIV/AIDS and could benefit from SHH services, contact Executive Director Josh Grubb by phone at 360-733-0176 or email him at directorshh@comcast.net. Sean Humphrey House is in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Entertainment News Northwest ~ May 2016

Local Author & Illustrator Nationally Recognized by Carol Oberton Phoebe Wahl has just been chosen as the 2016 Ezra Jack Keats Book Award winner for new illustrator. This award is given for distinguished artwork that creatively and skillfully embodies the essence of the story or text. The intent of the New Illustrator Award is to identify and encourage emerging artists. Phoebe grew up and resides in Bellingham; she appreciates her Northwest roots. She has been a prolifically inspired artist her entire life and one who has followed passionately her dream to create children’s books. She is 24 years old and a graduate of Rhode Island School of Design in Providence with a BFA in illustration. Her first foray into children’s literature is Sonya’s Chickens published by Tundra Books. A cash award of $1,000, coupled with the esteemed Ezra Jack Keats medallion, was presented to Phoebe & Don Tate, the winning authors. The award ceremony is held every year in April during the Fay B. Kaigler Children’s Book Festival at the University of Southern Mississippi, which houses the esteemed deGrummond Children’s Literature Collection. Phoebe said, “Keats’ work stands out as some of the most important of my childhood. I can trace the roots of my obsession with pattern, color and use of collage to my affinity with the lacy baby blanket in Peter’s Chair. Keats inspired me to create stories that are quiet and gentle, yet honor the rich inner lives of children and all of the complexity therein. I am humbled to be associated with Keats’ legacy in being presented with this award, and I am so grateful to the Ezra Jack Keats Foundation and the children’s literature community for this show of support and encouragement.” Congratulations Phoebe! We are proud to have your powerful voice in our community!

Locarno – Locarno is the Latin project of

Juno Award-winning musician and Paperboys frontman Tom Landa. The music, like him, is part Mexican, but with strong doses of Cuban Son, folk, pop, and funk. There are threads of Son Jarocho and Salsa, but the songs are more edgy and contemporary than that. The music could be compared to Manu Chao, Ozomatli or Rodrigo and Gabriela, but although there are similarities, it is truly original and a new flavor in the Latin music genre. Don’t Miss Lloyd Jones and The Full Band Extravaganza! by Justin Hawkinson “Swampified American Roadhouse Music” is coming to The Lincoln Theater in Mount Vernon on Saturday, May 28 in the form of Lloyd Jones, a world traveling blues musician, bandleader and fixture of the Portland, Oregon, music scene. Lloyd has been thrilling audiences for decades as a songwriter, expert guitar man and singer with successful blues bands such as Brown Sugar, The Lloyd Jones Struggle, and Triple Trouble. He has also trained and toured with several well-known musical acts including Etta James, Buddy Guy, and Chuck Berry. His influences are evident in his set list as well as his musical sound. In live concerts as well as his eight acclaimed albums, Jones has been known to mix his own songs with classic tunes from artists he admires such as “Shake Your Money Maker” by Elmore James, “Rosemary” by Fats Domino, and a surprisingly powerful version of “Help” by the Beatles. “I grew up playing and learning this music from playing with people like “Big Walter Horton,” Charlie

22

Musselwhite, Big Mama Thornton, B.B. King, Earl King, Albert King, Stevie Ray Vaughn, James Cotton, Robert Cray, Delbert McClinton, Albert Collins. Yipes, we could tell some stories!” Jones said in a recent interview with Entertainment News NW. “Point is, this was my collage, and I feel very lucky to have had such wonderful influences and friendships throughout my life. I love all kinds of music and listen to all I can.” This particular concert is a special one, being billed as “The Full Band Extravaganza.” The full stage will include The Atlas Horns, veteran organist Louis Pain, Carlton Jackson on drums, and Denny Bixby on bass as well as other special guests. LaRhonda Steele will be featured as a guest vocalist reprising her work from the most recent Lloyd Jones album, Doin’ What It Takes, as well as sharing some songs from her recent album, Rock Me Baby. “With a concert venue like the Lincoln Theatre, I can cover a wider spectrum and history of this music I call Swampified American Roadhouse Music,” Lloyd said. “(We’re) beginning with some solo acoustic foundation that this music is built on, and follow it through our 30 years of songwriting.” For people who haven’t been exposed to Lloyd Jones music (or live blues in general), he claims that there are few things better than a live show to convert new fans. “The live performance is a more human experience. YouTube is great, but it’s nothing compared to a live show. Growing up, I was moved by live shows; when I grew up that’s what we did.” Jones encourages any concertgoer to “hear the music, dance with friends, and feel your soul lifted and go home with a smile and be thankful for the joy of the music the musicians brought to your soul.”

Entertainment News Northwest ~ May 2016

Jones describes his music this way: “Combine New Orleans rhythms, the simplicity of Memphis music, and the rawness of the blues, all for the 21st century. This music is not about louder and faster. It’s about time, meter, groove.” His respect for the past is evident when he presents timeless music in a new and unique way. Portland area residents can watch Lloyd perform solo at The Muddy Rudder Public House on Mondays, and his quartet can be heard at the historic Portland watering hole Blackwell’s Grub. He is scheduled to tour Europe with his Danish band Shaky Ground for the month of June. After Europe, Lloyd plans to come back to the northwest for music festival season and often works cruise ships during the winter season. His albums are available on www.Amazon.com and iTunes. The Rick Epting Foundation for the Arts and Lincoln Theatre are pleased to present The Lloyd Jones Struggle on May 28 at 7:30pm. Advance festival seating tickets are $25 with $2 off for Lincoln Theatre and REFA members. Visit www.lincolntheatre.org for more information.

EAT - Master Chef Puts a French Twist on Local Food by Justin Hawkinson “Eating well is most important,” Master Chef Eric A. Truglas sums up his philosophy while looking out on the lunch crowd at his new restaurant: EAT Restaurant & Bar, named after his initials. “What you eat... [what you] put in your body has repercussions in your life. I think it’s important for everyone to be aware of where your food comes from.” EAT has been described as American Farm to Table with a French Twist. Chef Eric and his team at Restaurant Fools, LLC have created the feel of a French bistro in downtown Bellingham while stocking the pantry with locally sourced ingredients. The menu is designed to provide reasonably priced options in a casual environment with the goal of introducing

local meat and produce to the techniques of a “Maitre Cuisinier de France.” Most lunch items are between $12 and $15 with dinner entrees between $15 and $25. If you’ve ever liked a grilled cheese sandwich, the Croque Monsieur is the

30

next level. Artisan bread is expertly baked with Gruyere cheese, béchamel sauce and ham. Paired with a Sumas Salad of local greens, it proves to be a very satisfying lunch. In addition to the seasonal menu there are daily specials and soups based on freshness and availability. The bar has an extensive list of local wines and spirits combined into creative cocktails and pairings. Other options the chef recommends include Cassoulet Duck Confit, Dominique Faury (Cuisinier, Culinary Director, and EAT Poke Bowl with Ratatouille, and a Partner) and Eric A. Truglas (Master Chef and Partner). version of Steak Frites with Béarnaise that he declares is “to die for.” annual meeting in Alsace March 13-15. “There is a stigma about French This honor is the culmination of many cuisine,” says Truglas. “That it’s years of study and members are tasked expensive, that it takes too long…I want “to preserve and spread the French to keep it casual… comfortable, to fit the culinary arts, encourage training in lifestyle of people in this area.” cuisine, and assist professional development.”

Truglas is a native of Paris, and has worked in several kitchens around the world. In recent years he left Naples, Florida, to re-open Semiahmoo Resort near Blaine. After leaving that organization, he decided to stay in Whatcom County. “I fell in love with the Pacific Northwest,” he says through a big, bearded smile. “There’s a connection to the food here. Bellingham has a great advantage in getting fresh food.” “A lot of chefs might ask the farmer to grow what they like, but I ask the farmers to tell me what you grow, and I will incorporate that. In dealing with the farmer we find our greatest blessing,” he pronounced. A blackboard and an array of pictures in the dining area proudly thank local sources including Avenue Bread, Sage & Sky Farms and Bellewood Acres. “Without a good farmer there is no good cooking.” The Master Chef certification is a recent addition to Chef Eric’s resume. Maîtres Cuisiniers de France is a very select group of French national chefs who inducted Truglas into their ranks during the 2016 Entertainment News Northwest ~ May 2016

Chef Eric also has high praise for his business partners, Amberleigh Brownson, Dominique Fury, and Jeff Kahn. The partners at Restaurant Fools, LLC have all worked extensively in different aspects of the industry and “were definitely on board when [he] proposed the concept.” Rather than spending more on fancy tablecloths and flowers, they invest in the food to keep the prices affordable. Judging by the enthusiastic response from local diners, this restaurant promises to be a significant player in the Bellingham scene. EAT Restaurant & Bar, located at 1200 Cornwall Ave, is open Tuesday-Friday for lunch 11am-2pm. A brunch menu is offered on the weekend 9am-2pm and a full dinner menu is available TuesdaySaturday from 4-9pm. The first wine (& beer) pairing dinner was March 21, and cooking classes are being planned for the late spring and summer. Tables are filling up for peak hours so I recommend calling 360-306-3917 to make a reservation.
