The procession of marching bands, neighborhood associations, schools, musical groups, dancers, and green local businesses are encouraged to show up at the staging area at the parking lot on Cornwall Ave and Ohio Streets between 11 and 11:30am. Maple and Cornwall Ave. right by Boundary Bay Brewery. Stay for live music from noon-4pm, Irish food specials, Irish dancing all day in the Bistro & Taproom, plus more fun in the Beer Garden. Janet Lightner, General Manager of Boundary Bay and parade committee chair, says the parade was created to acknowledge, thank, and honor public safety personnel that include police and fire departments and park rangers. She stressed that the parade is also an opportunity to “green up” our community and celebrate the great businesses, groups, schools and nonprofits that make this community what it is. New this year, the Best Parade Unit chosen will win a $250 Boundary Bay garden party. In celebration of Whatcom Community College’s 50th Anniversary, Willie the Whale and Whatcom students, faculty and staff are grand marshals of the parade. Dixieland All Stars Benefit for the Homeless when he was down and share how isolated the homeless often become. A copy of Breakfast at Sally’s was found in the First Congregational Church library by Bob’s brother, North Storms. After both Storms brothers enjoyed the book, Bob reached out to LeMieux, who quickly agreed to come up for the celebration. “Other music groups in Whatcom County could have (their own) Willow concerts for their communities,” said Storms. “It’s kind of my hope that someone will come up and say they want to help.”

Dixieland All Stars: (left to right) Jerry Fenwick, trumpet; Art Horgen, sousaphone; Clive Collins, trombone; Steven Rudy, piano; Mike Hobbs, banjo; Brent Storms, drums; and Bob Storms, clarinet and sax.

by Justin Hawkinson Fans of local jazz music are likely familiar with Robert “Bob” Storms. He has been playing clarinet both locally and at festivals around the world for decades. Many local residents will remember him as a bandleader with the Ferndale School District during his forty-year career. But it is his talent for writing music that inspired a series of composer presentations where accomplished musicians have celebrated his music. The Ninth Annual Jazz Celebration Concert will be on Saturday, March 18 at First Congregational Church, located at 2401 Cornwall Avenue. This concert will start at 6:30pm, and the only entry fee is a requested donation of $15 benefiting the homeless of Bellingham and Whatcom County. All the music presented during this concert was written by Storms. He has a catalog of over 1000 original songs and the list keeps growing. Most of the set has never been performed for an audience, and several of the songs have been written within the last few months. Unlike previous years where multiple groups would perform, this year the entire concert will feature the Dixieland All Stars. This is a group Storms was inspired to create when he started counting the world-class musicians in the area. Trombonist Clive Collins was heard weekly on NPR with The Jim Cullum Jazz Band before he moved to the area and met Storms. Jerry Fenwick was a trumpet player from the California jazz circuit, and sousaphonist Art Horgen is known from Seattle’s Uptown Lowdown Jazz Band. Add in Canadian banjo player Mike Hobbs, Steven Rudy on piano, and Bob’s

son Brent Storms on drums for a stage full of musicians experienced in Dixieland music. “One thing I didn’t want to do was teach people how to play Dixieland,” said Storms. By collecting members that have been playing Dixieland for many years, he finds that his band can anticipate what each other is doing. Dylan Hodge recently joined the band at upright bass, and Storms looks forward to the sound his instrument will bring. Storms has kept faithful to the Dixieland tradition of keeping his songs close to three minutes in length. The nature of these songs will vary widely, but Storms promises there will be lots of ragtime tunes, mixed in with blues, Latin, cakewalk, and other fun rhythms. Three of Bob’s daughters have signed on to sing the tune “My Old Car” under the appropriate group name The Gales. Another promised highlight will be a trumpet duet between Fenwick and Ansgar Duemchen of the Market Street Jazz Band. Preston Lamp will treat the audience with his bass saxophone (spoiler alert—it’s huge) and Mary Michaelson will be a guest vocalist. The keynote speaker for the evening will be Richard LeMieux, who wrote the best selling book Breakfast at Sally’s, about his experiences when he became homeless in Bremerton, Washington fifteen years ago. LeMieux travels around the country sharing his story and the New York Times called his book “a cautionary tale for our time.” Since LeMieux’s story features his dog, Willow, this and his other charity events are called “Willow” events. An important part of LeMieux’s story is to thank those who helped him

Setting the Stage for Bellingham High School’s

The Wizard of Oz

by Courtney Kendall The stage is set for Bellingham High School’s next musical, The Wizard of Oz, and everyone from the director to the cast members to the crew are starting to get excited. BHS’s newest musical offers students many ways to get involved whether they are building sets, playing in the orchestra, designing costumes, or acting on stage. As Kelsey Glasgow, director and teacher, explains, the play “is about the kids and their creative vision. The show is generated by the kids with professional guidance. It’s their show.”

Luna Chambliss-Strunk (front) Sophia Carpenter, Mateyah Mullen, and Ashlyn Carter (back).

Auditions were open to the entire school, and brought in many students who were new to drama. “Musicals tend to bring in a lot of different students,” says Kelsey. While rehearsals typically run for three months, The Wizard of Oz cast and crew have only been rehearsing since January 3 due to the multiple snow days prior to winter break. Even with the shorter timeframe, everything is going well. “I’m really impressed with the cast and crew,” says Kelsey. At this point, “they’re a family.” The part of Dorothy will be played by senior Olivia Brice, the Soprano Category Winner at the SJMEA regional solo/ ensemble in January. Dorothy’s companions will be played by Ryan Hanson (Scarecrow/Hunk), Noah Dunn (Tinman/Hickory), and Aaron McInnis (Lion/Zeke). Aaron was SJMEA Winner in the Tenor Category, as well as 1st place at the State Contest. Their antagonist, the Wicked Witch (also Miss Gulch), will be played by Elizabeth Pine. Luna ChamblissStrunk will play Glinda, the Good Witch and Aunt Em. Luna was the winner in the

12

Mezzo Soprano Category at SJMEA. The ruler of the Emerald City will be played by Connor Nehls (Wizard of Oz/Professor Marvel) with Ben Axlund as Uncle Henry/ Guard of the Gate. Ben was chosen as 1st Alternate for Bass. Many of the Oz cast members are a part of Showstoppers, which took 3rd place in the large mixed ensemble category at the State Solo/ Ensemble Contest last year and 1st place the year before. BHS’s The Wizard of Oz is a Royal Shakespeare Company adaptation, which more faithfully follows the MGM film and features the same classic characters. The musical will debut Friday, March 3 at 7pm at Bellingham High School. There will be another evening performance on Friday, March 10 at 7pm and two matinee performances on Saturdays, March 4 and 11 at 2pm. Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for students and senior citizens. Besides her role as director, Kelsey teaches many drama classes and a Freshman English class at Bellingham High School. This is Kelsey’s third year happily teaching: “I can’t imagine teaching another subject.” As director, Kelsey’s role is to give the students her professional guidance, while allowing plenty of room for their own creative ideas. Kelsey loves “watching [students] collaborate and watching the light bulbs come on. It’s just so cool.” Kelsey gives the students room to explore their creative vision, and their vision is what she loves most about the production. Kelsey is joined by Keefe Healy, Technical Director; Linda Short, Vocal Director; and Nick Strobel, Orchestra

David Byrne Film will premiere at Bellingham Music Film Festival Lights! Camera! Cue the Music! by April Metz de Montiel The 2nd annual Bellingham Music Film Festival, co-presented by the MakeShift Project and The Pickford Film Center, will be held April 6, 7, and 8. The screenings will be held at the new Idiom Theatre (205 Prospect St.), the MakeShift Space (306 Flora St.) as well as the Limelight (1416 Cornwall Ave.) and Pickford Film Center (1318 Bay St.). Tickets will be just $3 at the door. The festival will open with a premiere of David Byrne’s Contemporary Color, a full-length feature film combining live music with the imagery of color guards of the marching band genre. The cost to attend the premiere is $10.75 general, $8 students, and $7.50 for members. Throughout the festival, films will be viewed simultaneously in the listed venues for a donation of $3 at the door. A panel of 14 judges has carefully selected all of the films to be shown. The judges come from various film backgrounds: directors, producers, professors of film, industry professionals, as well as two high school representatives. Submissions were accepted in the category of music video, short and feature lengths. Local, regional, and international students and professionals alike submitted work to be reviewed. 2016’s Bellingham Music Film Festival viewed over 300 submissions, and for 2017, the board applied for a grant to help streamline the adjudication process and pick the most appropriate projects to present for the festival slots. At the time this issue of ENNW went to press, the review process was in high gear! The festival will culminate in a celebration of the best of show. MakeShift’s Tyson Bellew is organizing a closing party with live music by regional bands. The Bellingham Music Film Festival is the brainchild of Professor Kacey Marrow. Marrow is an Associate Professor at Western Washington University. She teaches in the Department of Design and is herself a consummate professional of the digital and motion arts. She has received awards for her own projects and continues to write and promote the field through this project and others. The BMFF was an idea to celebrate the intersection of live music and film. Marrow is working closely with The Pickford Film Center’s Lindsey Gerhard. Gerhard has festival and event planning experience, with Austin’s South X Southwest in her repertoire. Tyson Bellow of the MakeShift Project is organizing the live music for the event. For a list of film titles and times, visit www.BellinghamMusicFilmFestival.com.

The Spoken Word: Hear Authors Read at Village Books in March! by Deborah M. Bernard Some cities are built on rock and roll. Chuck and Dee Robinson helped rebuild the city of Fairhaven, 37 years ago, on the Love of Literature by creating Village Books, a gathering center dedicated to the writers, the poets, and the readers who love them. They opened in 1980, when Fairhaven was “a rather sorry looking place with empty storefronts and vacant lots,” Bellingham historian Brian Griffin said in his book, “Fairhaven: A History.” Village Books and the Colophon Café next door were the community-building anchor businesses that inspired growth, according to Griffin. Last month, a new chapter began at Village Books. After 36 years, Chuck and Dee Robinson have transferred ownership of their iconic bookstores to three long-time employees. And, as in every great novel, the new chapter still has the historic ambience of the previous chapters. Groundwork created since the opening pages of the book (and the bookstore). The characters may change, but the true essence remains. Their free Lit Live! Events, hosted by the business, are a cornerstone of the thriving literary community built by Village Books: An author is invited to read from his work. Readers can listen to an excerpt in the writer’s own voice, buy a book if they so choose, and have it autographed by the author.

Come hear Debu Majumdar read from his first novel, Sacred River: A Himalayan Journey, on Sunday, March 5, at 4pm. “Through the events of three independent stories that converge in the Himalayas, you encounter the real India. Suspense, mythology, and intercultural romance weave a colorful tapestry.” Debu adds, “The book is about how to live in peace and tranquility. You will be uplifted!” Born in India, Debu Majumdar received a doctorate degree in physics from SUNY

26

at Stony Brook. His first book, From the Ganges to the Snake River, a creative non-fiction, interweaves Indian culture with northwest American reality. Don’t miss the charming chapter on Debu and his two sons learning to fish on the Snake River in Idaho. “Village Books is absolutely a cultural tradition, an integral part of the local writing community. Everybody loves to go to Village Books!” Debu said. He participates in one of the many writing groups there. He and his wife moved from India to New York to Idaho, and have settled in Bellingham because they love the diversity and the community, and because their 8-month old granddaughter resides here. For further information, please go to Debubooks.com.

On March 8 at 7pm, Carolyn Wood reads from her book Tough Girl: An Olympian’s Journey Memoir. Tough Girl recounts two journeys taken almost sixty years apart. One is the coming-of-age story of a rambunctious and closeted northwest swimmer during the 1950s as she learns to train, race, and ultimately compete for gold in the 1960 Rome Olympics. The other follows her memories and meditations along the Camino de Santiago in 2012 as alone she comes to accept the end of a decadeslong relationship. Carolyn Wood, born and raised in Portland, Oregon, won a gold medal in swimming in the 1960 Rome Olympics at age fourteen. She is a retired English teacher.

March 14 at 7pm, Zoey Leigh Peterson will read from her book, Next Year for Sure. In this moving and enormously entertaining debut novel, longtime romantic partners Kathryn and Chris experiment with an open relationship and reconsider everything they thought they knew about love. Zoey was born in England, grew up all over the US, and now lives in Canada.

March 17, 7pm, Charlie Sheldon will read from Strong Heart—Fiction! “Deep in the Olympic Peninsula wilderness, 13 year old Sarah Cooley takes a wrong step. What happens next is impossible. It’s a sea adventure, a journey through Olympic National Park, and an adventure through time. Strong Heart, a breathtaking celebration of the wild Northwest and North Pacific, startles, yet challenges us to think.” Charlie Sheldon has fished commercially, worked for seaports, and now writes his tales from Ballard, Washington.

And on March 24 at 7pm, Serge Alternês reads from his Life Souls: Citizens and Volunteers of Civil War Spain. The people in the Spanish Civil War come alive in the author’s father, humanitarian volunteer Alec Wainman’s memoir and compassionate photographs. After a 40-year search for his father’s 1,650 photos, he is delighted to be able to share them with readers. All readings take place at Village Books,1200 11th Street in Bellingham.

Roses are red, violets are blue. Poems don’t always rhyme, it’s true. by Marla Bronstein Poetry can seem intimidating. Residents of Whatcom County of all ages and all levels of experience are invited to submit poems from March 1-31, 2017, to compete in the Sue C. Boynton Poetry Contest. George Drake and Ethel Crook founded the Contest in 2006, to honor Sue C. Boynton. Drake wrote of the establishment of the contest in his on-line blog. He had attended the 95th birthday celebration of Ethel Crook, Sue’s daughter, and shared with Ms. Crook that Sue, at age 95, had read one of her poems at the 1976 Bicentennale ceremony. Drake wrote, “Sue did not consider herself more than an amateur poet, but she always inspired others to write.” He and Ms. Crook created the countywide poetry contest in her mother’s name, the “Sue C. Boynton Poetry Contest and Poetry Walk,” open to any Whatcom County resident of any age or level of education. Judging this year are Jacob Harsh and Laura Laffaredo, professional poets who will read every qualifying submission. Twenty-five poems will be selected to be displayed on placards on Whatcom Transportation Authority buses that serve

routes throughout the county. Four local artists, Christian Ann Smith, Mat Hudson, Megan Carrol and Kim Wulseftiet, design the graphics that grace the placards. In cooperation with the Bellingham Public Library, ten poems chosen by the judges will be etched onto plaques that are installed on the Poetry Walk that exists in front of the Library. The Birchwood Garden Club tends the garden. BTV-10 produces videos of twelve of the winning poems to be broadcast and shared on social media. All 25 poets will be invited to read their submissions at the awards ceremony open to the public, which is scheduled for May 18 at the Alaska Ferry Terminal in Bellingham. Every poem read by the judges will be displayed.

Committee member Joan Packer has been keeping records since the beginning of the contest. The first year there were 78 contestants. Since then, more than 3,000 poems have been submitted by Whatcom County residents aged 5 to 100. An average of 200-300 poems qualify for submission every year, according to Rachel Mehl, current Chair of the Sue C. Boynton Poetry Committee. Anyone interested in submitting is encouraged to read the guidelines regarding residency, length of poem, and characters per line. (This is to ensure the winning poem will fit on the plaque.) The rules are detailed on the contest website www.thepoetrydepartment.wordpress.com. Judy Kleinberg, who served on the committee for four years, offers this advice for first time poets: “Go for it! Read and follow the guidelines.” www.chocolateisaverb.wordpress.com

Luther Allen has served as a judge a few times after having his poems selected for several of the contests. Allen says, “I think it’s important for poets to have their poems witnessed by their community. Plus, I love seeing my work displayed next to poems written by 8 year olds and 80 year olds at the Awards Ceremony!” https://othermindpress.wordpress.com at left: Boynton descendants with George Drake, 2013. at right: Sue C. This annual event is a 2007 Mayor’s Arts Award recipient, and is free and open to the public. The Sue C. Boynton Poetry Contest is a program of Whatcom Poetry Series, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. The contest is organized by a committee of volunteers with no paid staff and a modest budget. Funds to support the contest are raised by donations, grants, annual poetry workshops and proceeds from sales of the poetry anthologies. All donations are greatly appreciated and tax deductible.

Art Exhibit: The Neighbors and In the Open – For The Neighbors, Arne

Svenson pointed his camera through his neighbors’ windows, without their consent. In these evocative, un-postured pictures, Svenson brings a painterly attention to light reminiscent of 17th Century Dutch painting. Some of his subjects saw the photos, objected and sued, citing violation of privacy, but the New York State Supreme Court ruled in the artist’s favor on 1st Amendment grounds. Organized as a complementary exhibition, In the Open presents an international and multi generational group of artists who have utilized the invasive potential of the lens to capture images in public spaces. These exhibits will be showing at WWU Gallery through March 11. Free admission. More info: 360-6503900, hafthor.yngvason@wwu.edu or https://westerngallery.wwu.edu.

The Whatcom Art Market Celebrates 7th Anniversary You are cordially invited to meet the artists, enjoy art and craft demonstrations and enjoy refreshments the weekend of March 10, 11, and 12 from 10am-6pm. The Art Market is located in Fairhaven at 1103 11th St. The Art Market is part of Whatcom Art Guild (WAG), a non-profit (c) 3 organization that has been nurturing visual arts within the community for more than 50 years. WAG membership is open to artists and art lovers from Whatcom and the adjoining counties. The Guild provides artists/ members an environment in which they can meet and exchange ideas and information, support life-long art education, encourage and promote the arts in Whatcom County and promote member artists. The Art Market is a co-op gallery, exhibiting the work of 45 members. Artists from Whatcom, Skagit and the San Juan Islands have created a treasure chest of artwork including original oil, acrylic, pastel, mixed media and watercolors. The gallery also features superb photography. Three dimensional works include wood bowls, cutting boards, glass, jewelry, metal, textiles and hand woven fabrics, knitted gloves, scarves and hats. Household items including crochet rugs and baskets, soft sculptures, handmade bears and creatures, soaps and lotions, plus a large selection of greeting cards. The Market also offers finely crafted, one-of-a-kind art pieces for home or office décor, for gift giving, to wear or to use. The Whatcom Art Guild created a cooperative, year-round business for their artists seven years ago in Fairhaven, giving them a brick and mortar setting for showing and selling their work. Being under the umbrella of the Whatcom Art Guild has provided stable leadership for a venture this size and a large reason why the Art Market has experienced continued success. The participating artists run the co-op, which is why visitors see different faces every time they come in. Those with discriminating tastes will appreciate that the entire inventory is locally handmade and each item is unique. If you have special requests, many of the artists accept commission work created to your specifications. Everyone appreciates art, but many cannot afford to own original work. The Market offers exceptional art at very reasonable prices making it possible for anyone to collect original art from the artist. The Whatcom Art Guild is a family in that they encourage each other’s creative endeavors, providing opportunities to educate, critique, and assist each other with art works. Each member brings different skill sets to the table from their different arts and each member’s contribution is highly valued. The Guild is open to art in all media. Ages range from high school to 90+! Some artists are just beginning their trek as artists, while others are internationally award-winning artists. The Whatcom Art Guild has supported art in Whatcom County since 1964. The Art Market is the flagship gallery of the organization. Indigenous Influences – In the second

floor galleries this winter, Indigenous Influences is an exhibition curated by Regan Shrumm, through the Dana and Toni Ann Rust Curatorial Fellowship at MoNA (121 N. 1st St., La Conner). The exhibition looks at works from MoNA’s permanent collection that are influenced by Pacific Northwest Indigenous communities. Known as the “Mystics,” Mark Tobey, Morris Graves, Kenneth Callahan, and Guy Anderson sought to create art that consciously responded to the world around them, including referencing the local regional landscape and cultures. These artists began to collect Native American art, visit local Indigenous ceremonies, and befriend anthropologists, all of which made a major impact on the artists’ styles, colors, and spiritual outlooks. However, the influence of style came at a cost to the local indigenous nations. The exhibition examines the problematics and complexities of the artworks adopting Indigenous styles. On exhibit through March 26. Admission is by donation. More info: 360-466-4446, rshrumm@gmail.com or www.monamuseum.org/exhibition/ indigenous-influences.
