Bard on the Beach by Courtney Kendall “When you walk into this festival, you walk into another world…There are the mountains, the park, the stage—the artistic standards are unmatched. It’s magical.” Now in her 7th season of Bard on the Beach’s 28 seasons, Director of Marketing & Communications Heather Kennedy is still in awe of the magic. As Heather explains, “Bard on the Beach is not just about watching a play. It’s an experience.” Set in Vancouver, British Columbia, on the waterfront in Vanier Park, the backdrop is one of mountains, sea, and sky. The signature billowing white tents meet you at the entrance—a wrought iron archway bearing the festival’s name—and from there you enter Bard Village and a Shakespearean paradise. Western Canada’s largest not-forprofit professional Shakespeare Festival was created by founder and Artistic Director Christopher Gaze. Over 100,000 Vancouver residents and tourists attended the 2016 season. And, while you may have gone last year or years before, the best part of Bard on the Beach is that everything is always new. “Occasionally, we remount the same versions of plays,” Heather explains of their lineup choices. Even with those plays, however, it’s typically a play that is transitioning from being played on the Howard Family Stage in the more intimate Douglas Campbell Theatre, to the Mainstage Theatre. Otherwise, classic Shakespeare plays take on many different forms, from the traditional to the modern to the fantastical. “We look for certain ingredients when choosing,” says Heather. There is always one play set in a traditional setting, which is more historical with elaborate costuming. Then there is always a “boisterous, lively comedy.” Opening the season on the Mainstage this year is Much Ado About Nothing on June 1. Set in Italy in 1959, Bard’s version transforms Shakespeare into a Federico Fellini film, complete with movie stars, paparazzi, and a faked death. This season opener is sure to delight and reach a wide audience with its comedic wit and more modern setting. The Winter’s Tale will also be played on the Mainstage. Set in Sicily and Bohemia,

The Winter’s Tale is one Heather is particularly excited about. “It’s meant to be a fairy tale world in another place and time. It’s out of the ordinary, yet relatable…romantic, new, and unusual.” She adds, “There will be things you see on that stage that will be surprising and delightful.” On the Howard Family Stage will be two plays and one monologue. On June 22 The Merchant of Venice will debut. Set in modern-day Venice, 2017, Heather

explains that this play’s “plot is elastic enough” to fit into our time. “The director feels [this play] has to do with what is going on today. It touches on the question of what our society is doing about acceptance.” The Two Gentlemen of Verona, an early romantic comedy of Shakespeare’s, features the lively antics of Valentine and Proteus and Proteus’ unfortunate problem—he’s in love with Valentine’s girlfriend. While the plot is engaging enough, the actors threaten to be upstaged by an East Vancouver Basset hound. “People have gone berserk about Gertie,” Heather laughs. Gertie will be playing the role of Crab the Dog. Shylock is a monologue featuring Jon Davies, an actor and a Jew, who has been playing Shylock in an adaptation of The Merchant of Venice. Davies, criticized by

some vintage “high-energy hot jazz” with the Holotradband, the Swing Era repertoire of Casey MacGill’s Blue 4 Trio, or just pairing up with Del Ray on ukulele, you know Matt Weiner will be having a good time on his bass. Highlights include Schubert’s “Der Hirt auf dem Felsen” (The Shepherd on the Rock), a Lied in three sections conveying warmth, sadness and hope, and selections from the song cycle “Orpheus

Ryan Dudenbostel is Director of Orchestral Studies at WWU after eading the Manhattan School of Music orchestra for several years as rehearsal conductor. Dr. Dudenbostel has collaborated with director Peter Sellars and actor James Earl Jones, among others, and appeared on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. The last Bellingham Music Club Night Beat of the season on June 8, presents Ryan and Heather Dudenbostel (clarinet & voice) with Jay Rozendaal (piano).

Soprano Heather Dudenbostel is a versatile singing actress and voice instructor, performing and teaching on both coasts. Bellingham Hosts 24th Annual Premier Festival by April Metz de Montiel Thanks in part to a recent NEA grant of $10,000, the Bellingham Festival of Music (BFM) is back in the spotlight! In its 24th season, the music will commence on July 1 and conclude on July 21. Although all of the music is performed locally, the musicians who comprise the orchestras travel from all over the world to play in this prestigious festival. Many of the artists are principals at famous symphony halls. Locals do perform, but the pathway to play at the festival is an intense vetting procedure and requires a rigorous professional audition, creating a rich and international collaboration for each concert. The Bellingham Festival of Music was created in 1993, by conductor Michael Palmer and Robert Sylvester, a cellist, who taught at Western Washington University. Their vision was to create a venue for world-class quality performances within a beautiful natural setting. To this day, the board of directors is made up entirely of volunteers as they work passionately for the festival to maintain its financial health and musical distinction. As with any non-profit, the BFM requires fundraising, and in early 2017 the annual auction raised money. These funds are only used for programming and outreach. Overhead is currently a non-issue as the 18 board members are dedicated volunteers. The program’s vitality in our community — especially in the school system — has kept the BFM board creating new ways to keep the festival returning to Bellingham each summer. “Exposing my children to classical music training was the best thing I ever did as a parent,” says Board President, Karen Barry. “It’s essential that we introduce classical music to our young people.” BFM currently sponsors 7 students with private music lessons and instruments through a partnership with Blue Skies for Children, allowing lowincome families to experience the gift of music.

BFM also collaborates with the Whatcom Symphony to bring classical music into Bellingham Public Schools. “Play it Forward” is a chamber residency that is awarded to a Colburn Conservatory musician, who in turn visits many of the Bellingham middle and high school classrooms to teach and expose students to live chamber music. For elementary school children in the 3rd grade, a visit with Beethoven, a costumed interpreter, creates a personal introduction to classical music. Welcome Home is yet another BFM special outreach program, honoring Bellingham musicians who return from a conservatory education elsewhere. Welcome Home provides a homecoming performance opportunity for local musicians, and an opportunity to honor the Bellingham teachers who started them on their journey. For aspiring musicians, BFM also sponsors 3 master classes a year. Recently, Ilya Yakushev presented his piano master class, enabling local musicians to have time with and exposure to this internationally acclaimed pianist from St. Petersburg, Russia. This year, the orchestra is hosting several international musicians from Canada and Spain. Guest artists of the 2017 Bellingham Music Festival are as follows: Robert McDuffie, violin; Zuill Bailey, cello; Tim Fain, violin; Jeremy Denk, piano; Marc-Andre Hamelin, piano; and Calidore String Quartet (Jeffrey Meyers, violin; Ryan Meehan, violin; Jeremy Berry,

viola; and Estelle Choi, cello). For concert schedule, musical selections, and more, visit: www.bellinghamfestival.org. Tickets are available through the WWU Box Office or online at www.bellinghamfestival.org/tickets. Call 360-650-6146 to order tickets by phone. Tickets are also available via email from the WWU Box Office at boxoffice@wwu.edu. Special hotel offers may be found at www.bellinghamfestival.org/visit-us/ hotel-packages. (Far left) On July 8, 7pm, BFM will present Beethoven’s “Piano Concerto No. 4” with a pre-concert talk by Dr. Robert Lynch. Guest artist Jeremy Denk (pictured) is one of America’s foremost pianists – an artist that the The New York Times hails as someone “you want to hear no matter what he performs.” (Middle) July 16 will feature Haydn’s “Cello Concerto In C Major” with guest artist Zuill Bailey who will also present the pre-concert talk. (Below) Pianist Marc-Andre Hamelin will perform “Variations On A Theme Of Paganini” at the BFM opening concert on July 1 at 7pm. There will be a pre-concert talk at 6:30pm by Ben Taylor, composer. Spring 2017 Exhibitions at MoNA –

Each working in varying mediums, with vastly different aesthetics and at differing stages of their careers, the Camille Patha, Debora Moore and Sara Siestreem exhibitions are a celebration of the variance of art and the strength of women artists in our region. Turn up the Volume presents both the typical bold colors and pulsating energy of Camille Patha’s work as well as a new sense of gravity. Showing in the Benaroya Glass Gallery this spring, Debora Moore fills the Museum of Northwest Art with her realistic yet fanciful glass orchids. Paphiopedilum, referring to the pouch of a Slipper orchid, brings together the vibrant colors, realism and fantasy Moore’s creations are known for. With a multi-disciplinary exhibition including contemporary photography, video and ancestral Indigenous weaving, Sara Siestreem is the third Northwest artist to show at MoNA this spring with Clockwork White. Exhibits continue through June 11. MoNA is located at 121 S. 1st St., La Conner. Free admission. More info: marketing@museumofnwart.org , 360-466-4446 or www.monamuseum.org.

North Stars Chamber Orchestra to Tour Finland by Deborah M. Bernard The North Stars Chamber Orchestra tours Finland this summer in collaboration with Bellingham’s sister city Vaasa, Finland. Students from Vaasa’s Kuula Conservatory will join the orchestra for performances, which include music by the great Finnish composer, Sibelius! Jean Sibelius, widely recognized as Finland’s national composer, was born on December 8, 1865. At the time, Finland was a Grand Duchy of the Russian Empire. By the turn of the 20th century, the Russian Empire instituted Russification, aimed at limiting the cultural uniqueness, including the Finnish language, and autonomous status of the Grand Duchy of Finland. In 1899, the beginning of the Russification policy, Jean Sibelius composed his now world-famous symphonic poem Finlandia as a covert protest against increasing censorship and oppression by the Russian Empire. Largely rousing and turbulent, Finlandia evokes the struggle for Finnish independence, which was realized on December 6, 1917. The nineteen performers, ages 13 through 19, come from Seattle, the San Juan Islands, and Mount Baker and Fidalgo Youth Symphonies. Community members interested in supporting international exchange programs for youth, (or who simply want to have an enjoyable and inspiring afternoon of music!) may attend the Tour Concert on June 18, which presents all of the music the North Stars Chamber Orchestra will perform in Finland. Boys & Girls Clubs of Skagit County present Keys for Kids Dueling Piano Gala by Deborah Bernard Do you ever long for that nostalgic time when deep differences—political, social, country western vs. contemporary music—could be resolved musically? Shall we ever forget the dueling musical scene from Casablanca? It was 1941. The Nazis were singing “The Fatherland” around Sam’s famous piano at Rick’s Café Americain… then Victor Laszlo, with a nod from Rick himself, urged the café band: “Play ‘La Marseillaise!’ Play it!” And suddenly, every patriot raised his or her voice to drown out the oppressors’ song. This is truly one of the most stirring (non-violent) moments in movie history. And the iconic dance competition scenes from Dirty Dancing? So fun, so compelling, that the academy award winning song, “I’ve Had the Time of My Life” became a personal sound track for many viewers? Well, long no more! Join your friends for a night of fun at La Conner Flats on Friday, June 23 or Saturday, June 24. Featuring Dueling Pianos, outstanding food and drinks, and a true Club experience, Keys for Kids is your opportunity to kick the summer off in style, while supporting the incredible growth and outcomes of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Skagit County. Beginning with a social hour at 5:30pm, guests will enjoy light appetizers, wine from ThurstonWolfe Winery, beer from Boundary Bay Brewery, and the opportunity to participate in

games and activities hosted by the club kids. Avenue Catering is set to again provide an incredible seasonal buffet and the popular ice cream sundae bar. And, because the party could’ve gone a bit longer last year, this year there will be a DJ and snacks after the final notes from the piano have drifted off into the night. Keys for Kids will feature two highenergy performers on piano taking requests, and giving others an opportunity to end a song and have theirs heard. The atmosphere is electric! With room to dance, and the smell of flowers wafting in the air, people will take to the dance floor to enjoy an evening in the La Conner Flats Gardens under a tent. The audience sings along to hits crossing many genres of music. Last year, so many vowed to come back because of the unique and fun nature of the event, that a second night was added. Through sponsorships, the cost of the event is underwritten, providing each and every dollar raised to go straight to the youth. Keys for Kids is a high-concept, expandable event, and provides sponsorship opportunities at all levels. All donations make a difference in the life of a child. Opportunities range from the $1000 Table Sponsor—which includes food and drinks for 8 guests—up to the Grand Piano Title Sponsor, (Thank You, Tesoro), and several categories in between the two.

Whether it is through getting a song on the rotation, engaging in the small silent auction, or raising a paddle during Bids for Kids, the event connects philanthropy and fun in a big way. Prepare for a raucous time of laughter, dance, and singing along to old time rock and roll, contemporary favorites, and off-the-wall songs that somebody requests. Remember, you can stop any song by upping the bid. The event is limited to just 140 attendees per night, so register today. The cost is $75 per person or $600 for a table of 8. La Conner Flats is located at 15978 Best Rd. in Mount Vernon. Please RSVP by registering online or contact Ian Faley at 360-419-3723 x7 or ifaley@skagitclubs.org.

Fairhaven Outdoor Cinema crowd.

Behind the Screen with the Fairhaven Outdoor Cinema by Courtney Kendall

For seventeen years, Bellinghamsters have crowded the Village Green in Fairhaven on summer Saturday evenings. Blankets spread, snacks assembled—the Fairhaven Outdoor Cinema gathers an all-ages audience together to watch local entertainment and a movie projected onto the 30-foot screen. Admission is $5 per person (ages 5 and under free). Behind the screen is Doug Borneman, owner of Epic Events and mastermind behind the yearly lineup. Doug started doing outdoor movies through Epic Events in Seattle in 2002, and was approached in 2003 to start outdoor movies in Bellingham. Now the event is largely supported by the Historic Fairhaven Association and Ben Kinney & Keller Williams Realty, along with other sponsors. If you’re wondering why Doug picks the movies he does…well, “I look for a mix of classics and new movies that will appeal to a wide range of audiences. I try to keep it fun,” Doug adds. Doug listens to feedback—primarily through Facebook—and data from years back. But one thing stays consistent—the grand finale, The Princess Bride. Last year, Doug asked if the finale show should be changed. “The feedback was overwhelmingly no,” Doug laughs. This year classics such as the 1984 Ghostbusters will show alongside new hits such as Hidden Figures, Rogue One, and La La Land. Moana and Finding Dory will please the youngest Brian Ernst entertains prior to a movie. Photos in the crowd, and, of course, The Princess Bride will finish off courtesy of Epic Events. the summer. Entertainment prior to each show features a variety of performers, including musician Brian Ernst, circus performers, Aloha Hula NW, and more. Check out the Facebook page or www.FairhavenOutdoorCinema.com to see the schedule of movies and live entertainment. Come early, bring blankets to sit on, and get to know your neighbors at this Bellingham tradition. “We couldn’t do this without a great community,” says Doug.
