International Arts and Music Festival at Peace Arch Park by Nancy Canyon The 4th Annual International Arts and Music Festival will be held at Peace Arch State Park in Blaine, the last weekend of June (24-26). Artists from the greater Northwest will present sculptures, paintings, visual arts, textiles and more, all which will be available for sale to guests from both sides of the border. Those who’ve attended the festival before describe the event as the perfect time of year to take a relaxing stroll around garden-like Peace Arch State Park while enjoying the unique boutique-style festival of the arts. The temperature is comfortable; the sky is blue as the sea; all’s well with the world. The park overlooks Semiahmoo Bay and is considered the symbolic gateway commemorating lasting peace and exchange between Canada and the U.S. In previous years, festivalgoers enjoyed connecting with artists as well as sharing delicious food and drink in an atmosphere steeped in harmonious sentiment. This free event, which includes free parking, provides access to the art show and entertainment. The ambiance of the experience is flush with stimulating

sounds, smells, and textures, not to mention tantalizing the senses and creativity, live music, dance, and exceptional food prepared in the American Kitchen. In keeping with its boutique style, locally produced beer by Boundary Bay Brewery and award winning wine by Samson Estates Winery will be served in the outdoor beverage garden located near the stage. One of the festival’s organizers, Brian Major, says, “We are more excited this year than ever. We have amazing artists and a killer music lineup planned for our 4th Annual Arts and Music Festival.” He invites all to come relax at a shady picnic table and listen to jazz or African music, maybe even partake in a salsa dance or drumming circle. Between shows, festivalgoers can purchase beautiful art crafted by a new artist acquaintance. Choose from Seema’s exquisite collection, Jardin de fluers: lovely hand painted silk scarves and shawls, or select from one of Peggy Clark’s colorful prints. Check out wheelthrown pottery mugs and bowls, woodcrafts, and Stacey Silber’s handmade clothing. The music line-up this year begins Friday afternoon with acoustic guitarist JP Falcon and the eclectic Irish and Scottish music of the Whiskey Minstrels. On Saturday, take in The Rocky Vasalino Show and Ocheami–African drumming (including a children’s program). On Saturday, Sabrina y Los Reyes will perform her fresh Latin flavor with Afro-Cuban undertones. Sunday festivalgoers will enjoy the popular local trio, The Lord Knapp Band, and will love the fabulous Baby Cakes who will take the audience on a “joyride to the Golden Age of classic American Soul and R&B.” Mark your calendar for summer festivities this June 24-26: Friday 10am-

Driving Directions I-5 heading north: Take Exit 276. Turn right on Second Street and drive ahead to the park entrance. From Canada: After leaving the Peace Arch port of entry from Highway 99, stay right, immediately leaving I-5 via Exit 276. Drive around the traffic circle, under I-5, and take D Street. At the second traffic circle, turn on Second Street and follow to the entrance of the park. Visitors from Canada: An easy walk-in access to the Festival can be had by parking in the Peace Arch Provincial lot located at the border crossing off southbound 99. Call to Artists for 2017 Juried Artist Series and Inside the Box Series –

The 2017 Juried Artist Series will consist of approximately eight shows, each one a month long, taking place in 2017. Participation is open to all artists in Whatcom County. Membership with Allied Arts of Whatcom County is required and can be obtained at the time of application. The Inside the Box Series was created to highlight smaller, special, handmade goods of any medium. These goods are to be shown in display cases and will run the same length of time (4 weeks) as shows in the gallery space. Items considered for display may include, but are not limited to, jewelry, small sculptures, miniature paintings, art books, etc. Cost is $75 membership fee. “Faith in a Seed”: Philip McCracken’s Sculpture and MixedMedia Painting – This exhibition surveys nature’s inspiration for one of the Pacific Northwest’s most distinguished artists. From animal sculptures, to witty interpretations of contemporary life, McCracken has forged his own path, inspired by the writings of the nineteenth century philosopher Henry David Thoreau. Celebrating the Best of BAAY by Courtney Kendall For the past ten years, BAAY (Bellingham Arts Academy for Youth) has produced over 100 musicals and touched the lives of countless Whatcom County youth. BAAY’s mission has always been about “creating and sustaining an empowering place for young people,” founder and executive director David Post explains. On June 18, BAAY will celebrate their achievements with “Best of Bay!” The family-friendly event will be held at The Majestic in downtown Bellingham. Doors open at 5pm with casual performances by current and past BAAY students until showtime at 7pm. There will be food and treats from Pizza’zza and Mallard’s ice cream, along with beer and wine. Admission is by donation. All proceeds from beer and wine sales, donations, and fun fund-raising activities will go towards supporting BAAY’s program development, facilities improvements, and the BAAY Scholarship Fund. The formal show starts at 7pm and features one-timeonly encore performances from past hit shows, including “We Go Together” from Grease, which was performed by BAAY ten years ago. Also planned are “Skid Row” from Little Shop of Horrors [and “Children Will Listen,” the finale from Into the Woods, along with songs from such BAAY favorites as Oliver, My Fair Lady, Annie, Les Miserable, Peter Pan, and more. The numbers chosen will reflect a crosssection of ten years of stellar performances. David expects about 200 children to be involved in the event. He says that “everybody who has been a part of BAAY is invited to be a part of the cast.” The show will serve as a celebration for BAAY fans, as well as be a reunion for past BAAY students. Besides the main campus, BAAY, a 501(c) 3 nonprofit, includes Bellingham Preschool of the Arts, and EduArts, an after-school enrichment program dedicated to providing affordable arts education.

“Best of BAAY!” is also a chance for David to say goodbye. After ten years, David will be leaving BAAY in mid-July. While BAAY started with eight choir students meeting in a rehearsal hall of Garden Street Methodist Church, the objectives have not changed. BAAY is committed to providing a space for young people to dream and achieve those dreams through what David calls a “model of mutual respect” supporting the whole child. “Our staff have the best interests of the young people at heart,” David says. Ian Bivins will take over the role of BAAY’s executive director. Ian, a graduate of Western Washington University’s theater department, has been a technical director at BAAY for many shows and directed Pippin. Ian will be supported by the rest of BAAY’s talented staff including main musical director Steve Barnes,

costume shop manager Dana Crediford, and choreographer Lisa Markowitz, among many others. As for David, a long list of projects and activities awaits him. One such plan is a research project focused on bringing arts education into inner-city schools. David looks to support his hypothesis that having the arts in schools will increase attendance numbers, in turn increasing school district revenue. “It’s driven by dollars and cents,” he explains. prove the importance of having arts as a part of every school day. David encourages everyone to come to “Best of BAAY!” to support the students and quality children’s theatre in Bellingham as they continue on their path towards a 20th anniversary. Come, too, to bid farewell and pay tribute to David and his ten years of hard work. David may be leaving, but the show will go on, and David will never be very far from the stage or the best interests of children everywhere.

At least, not according to the Haynie Opry and its organizer, Matt Audette, as they kick off the second half of their eleventh season with their Gospel and Americana Music Extravaganza at the Haynie Grange in Blaine on Friday and Saturday nights, June 10 and 11. Headliners on both nights are Taylor Holtzheimer and Reminisce, who will take us on a historical musical walk through the origins of American music, highlighting our Blues and Gospel roots. “Blues is the genesis of all kinds of music,” Audette said. Bellingham Festival of Music Tunes Up for Summer by Justin Hawkinson “Celebrating Classical Music” is the slogan of Bellingham’s premier symphony festival. The Bellingham Festival of Music has been entertaining fans of orchestra performance for more than twenty years. This year’s celebrating is about to crescendo as the summer schedule begins July 1 at the WWU Performing Arts Center. On the program will be selections by Haydn, Beethoven, and Schumann. World-renowned cellist Lynn Harrell will be a featured soloist. The 2016 Festival Orchestra is a diverse collection of professional musicians from across the globe who have committed to sharing chamber music at its highest level with the Bellingham audience. Under the baton of Artistic Director Michael Palmer, this collection of symphonic all-stars are preparing to present a full series of concerts this summer. After the July 1 opener to the summer season, concertgoers can see the ensemble perform different classical pieces at WWU on July 5, 9, 13, and 17. Each performance will feature a guest artist, and the finale on July 17 will include the 2016 Bellingham Festival Chorus, a select choir of talented singers in our community. In December 2015, the Bellingham Festival of Music was awarded a $10,000 grant from The National Endowment for the Arts for “artistic excellence in music presentation.” The prize money, in addition to corporate sponsors, ticket sales and membership donations fuel an organization that invests in the future of orchestra music for Bellingham and the surrounding area. They give scholarships to further the education of local music students and the festival partners with The Whatcom Symphony Orchestra to provide support for the music programs at local schools. “Beethoven in the Schools” is an educational outreach that has been teaching at local elementary schools since 2012. The “Play it Forward Music Residency” is a program that sponsors musicians (including the Calidore Quartet) to come and perform for the community. And recently the “Fifth Grade Strings Program” provided $12,000 for the purchase of music instruction books, music stands, and stand racks for each elementary school in the district. Bard on the Beach Shakespeare Festival in Vancouver, British Columbia, will again grace the public with its annual dynamic lineup of Shakespeare plays, music, and a variety of delightful, special events for every taste. The festival is a not-for-profit professional series that has been in existence since 1990. Based in the beautiful city of Vancouver during the summer, it has been the venue to attend for locals and those within traveling distance who desire an unforgettable entertainment experience. Tickets are now on sale; the season opens June 3 and runs until September 24. You have dates all summer long to choose from. The dilemma will be making the choice(s). Here’s a quick preview: Romeo and Juliet is the season opener with previews starting June 3 with the official opener on June 10. Farmers Market to Showcase Local Talent by Justin Hawkinson Chef in the Market has been a monthly crowd favorite at the Bellingham Farmers Market in recent years. The cooking demonstrations and sampling will be back every third Saturday for the 2016 season, but things will not be business as usual. This year’s booth will be manned by teams of (at least) two chefs from different local kitchens, in partnership with the Sustainable Connections Food and Farming program. The teams were made up from members and associates of The Northwest Washington Chefs Collaborative, a group of local culinary professionals who work with Sustainable Connections to increase local food awareness and encourage farm-to-table food sourcing. Bellingham Farmers Market Director Caprice Teske has a clear vision for what the Chef in the Market is trying to accomplish. “We want customers to be inspired to try new ingredients or to use ingredients in new ways,” Teske said. “Obviously, our end goal is that customers are encouraged to shop directly from farmers and that they see the value in using seasonal products in their meal planning. And we also want to showcase the chefs that have taken the extra step of procuring local ingredients for their businesses. It’s valuable to hear from professionals that local, seasonal products really can’t be beat!” This season the partner chefs will be sampling local fare on June 18, July 16, August 20 and September 17. The ingredients will be from local farms, and the recipes will be available for market attendees to take home and recreate. Each dish will have a five ingredient limit (except for some basic kitchen staples) and starting at 11am, 11:30am, and noon, there will be a twenty minute show demonstrating techniques and introducing the produce of local farmers. Attendees will be given samples, and there will be opportunities to ask questions.

“What’s the Point” Low Tide Exploration – Whatcom Land Trust and

Telling Our Stories: Local Histories in the Library and Beyond – Lifelong

Mount Vernon Resident, Joan Lee, got her library card in the second grade, 70 years ago now. In 1956, the Mount Vernon Library had just recently moved into a new and state of the art facility at the site of the present library, after over 30 years in its previous location in the old City Hall building. This year marks the 100th anniversary, and the centennial celebration, of the Mount Vernon City Library as a public entity.
