Outdoor Music and Movies by Meghan Thompson Despite the long months of waiting, tightly wrapped in numerous layers of fleece and flannel, summer has finally arrived here in the Pacific Northwest, and with it comes the always-popular outdoor concert series, sponsored by the Eldridge Society and supported by Bellingham Parks and Recreation. While the series is usually spread out around Bellingham, with shows at varying parks, this year all performances will take place at Elizabeth Park – as Boulevard Park is receiving several improvements (a nip here, a tuck there). With performances from musicians of all genres, there’s bound to be a show fit for even the pickiest musical pallet. As always, the concerts are free and fun for all ages. Be forewarned though, they draw quite a crowd so it may be wise to avoid the hassle of parking and simply ride your bike.

Jules McEvoy, a.k.a. One Fine Fool, will be performing at 8:30pm at the Fairhaven Village Green prior to the film “Rise of the Guardians” which starts at dusk. Pre-movie seating is $5 per person, age 5 and under are free.

Kid Stuff—First Annual Bellingham Kids Traverse by Joanna Nesbit The multi-sport Bellingham Traverse has become an integral part of our city’s outdoor events scene. Now kids can join in the fun and race their way through their own Traverse event. On June 29 at 10am, the First Annual Bellingham Kids Traverse will launch at Civic Stadium for kids aged 6-14.

triumphant and confident at the finish line,” says race director Jen Gallant. “It will also offer a challenging course for older kids who choose to do the event solo.” Elsworth, executive director of Recreation Northwest—the organization producing the race—thinks going tandem might be the most fun, with one kid running, one cycling, and then both completing the obstacle course and team trek together. Whatever kids fancy, though. Ribbons and Mallard ice cream will be awarded to all finishers, with special ribbons going to the top three teams in each category. (Ice cream will also be available for purchase for everyone else, along with food truck fare.) Runners testing out the course.

Gathering for trial run of Bellingham Kids Traverse.

Similar to the adult race, created by Todd Elsworth in 2001, the multi-sport Kids Traverse will feature course legs: a 1-mile run, 1.5-mile mountain bike variation of “thriller cross,” and an obstacle course, followed by a final “team trek” across the finish line in front of the main stadium. The beauty of the race is it can be done with just about any combination of ages and genders. Kids can take it on solo (Chinook category), as a 2-person tandem (Coho), or as a 3-person relay (Chum). The age brackets are 6-10, 11-14, and the all-encompassing 6-14, which allows siblings and friends in different age brackets to compete together. “The Kids Traverse is unique in that it will offer very young kids a realistic, do-able course that will help them to feel

Mountain bikers getting ready to ride.

Like the adult race, the Kids Traverse celebrates the life cycle of the wild salmon and the natural and man-made challenges it faces. The looping course metaphorically reflects the salmon’s watery travels to promote awareness of our ecological landscape and the salmon’s role in it. Think of the running leg as newly hatched fry navigating the river, or the mountain bike leg as the smolt heading down a raging river toward the ocean. The race is the brainchild of Recreation Northwest, a new non-profit events organization headed up by Elsworth and a board of directors to promote public health and wellness, as well as stewardship of the land, water, and open space for recreational use. Founded in January 2013, the organization produces the multi-sport Bellingham Traverse, Kids Traverse, and Olympia Traverse, and has Entertainment News Northwest ~ June 2013

also taken on the Padden MTN Pedal. Besides promoting health and wellness for kids and adults, the organization’s mission is to showcase recreational amenities and connect Pacific Northwest businesses and non-profits. Each race will dedicate a portion of its proceeds to one beneficiary. The YMCA is the beneficiary of the Kids Traverse. Recreation Northwest partnered with a variety of organizations for the race, including the YMCA, Bellingham Parks and Recreation, Sustainable Connections, and the Sportsplex, and would like to thank its “spawnsors,” including Mallard, Kulshan Cycles, Klicks, Birch Equipment, and Lithtex NW. Media spawnsors are Cascadia Weekly, Bellingham Herald, and Mount Baker Experience. Elsworth also offers a resounding thank you to the Kids Traverse team: race director Jen Gallant, Tammy Bennett (YMCA), Lance Romo (Parks and Rec), and Sam Alexander (Klicks). Visit www.recreationnorthwest.org to register. Teams must register online and in advance. There will be no registration the day of the race. Cost is $25-$60 (depending on team size) until June 14. Late registration, June 15-28, costs $35-$75. On race day, packet pick-ups begin at 9am. Have fun! Bellingham freelancer Joanna Nesbit has been writing for ENNW since 2005. Her work has also appeared in FamilyFun, Parenting, Northwest Travel, and Washington State Visitors’ Guide. Learn more at www.joannanesbit.com. Trial run photos courtesy of Recreation Northwest.

Bellingham Children’s Theatre Offers Imaginative Outdoor Summer Camps Kids’ unique imaginations are the driving force behind Bellingham Children’s Theatre’s classes, camps, and productions. When kids get to explore their own quirky, wacky, far-fetched ideas and create their own original characters, devise their own plots, or radically adapt that familiar story we all know in such a way as to truly “think outside the box,” they become independent thinkers as well as actors. Rather than rely on Walt Disney, Broadway, or the latest blockbuster movie to tell us our stories, BCT offers four wonderfully creative summer camps for kids age 6-14 to tell their own. Each camp meets Monday through Friday from 12 – 5pm and the cost is $150. Since summer is no time to be inside, campers meet at the studio, and then go outside into the sunshine to play

Reunion in Bellingham — Festival Features Familiar Faces

by Christopher Key What better way to celebrate the 20th season of the Bellingham Festival of Music than to bring back guest artists who have proved to be local favorites? That’s a rhetorical question, since the world-renowned festival is doing precisely that. “Over the past 20 years, the Festival of Music has become one of the stellar classical music events in the Northwest, earning three NEA grants in the past four years,” said Festival Chairman John H. Binns, Jr. “To celebrate the Festival’s 20th Anniversary, Maestro Palmer is bringing back some of the most popular guest artists of past years, musicians who helped make the Festival such an important part of Northwest culture, performers such as pianist Garrick Ohlsson, guitarist Pepe Romero, and soprano Heidi Grant Murphy. We are anticipating our best season ever.” Classical rock star Joshua Roman leads the way on July 5 with his finesse and fireworks. The Oklahoma City native began playing the cello at the age of three on a quarter-size instrument, and played his first public recital at age ten. Home-schooled until he was 16, Roman then pursued his musical studies at the Cleveland Institute of Music with Richard Aaron. He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Cello Performance in 2004, and his Master’s in 2005. Prodigious violinist Ray Chen will share top billing on July 9 with oboist Joseph Robinson. “Ray has proven himself to be a very pure musician with great qualities such as a beautiful youthful tone, vitality and lightness. He has all the skills of a truly musical interpreter,” said his friend and mentor Maxim Vengerov. Joseph Robinson’s career as an oboist began effectively with his appointment by Music Director Robert Shaw to the principal chair of the Atlanta Symphony in 1967. From 1974 until 1978 he served as a member of the Clarion Woodwind Quintet and the Piedmont Chamber Orchestra. He won the New York

Philharmonic Principal Oboe audition in December of 1977. Imposing pianist Garrick Ohlsson will assume command of the concert grand for the program on July 13. His concerto repertoire alone is unusually wide and eclectic – ranging from Haydn and Mozart to works of the 21st century – and to date he has at his command more than 80 concertos, which should inspire awe in anyone. The annual chamber concert has drawn raves both for the stellar quality of the musicians and the spectacular setting in the atrium of Bellingham Cruise Terminal. That concert will take place on July 14. Classical guitarist Pepe Romero returns to the Bellingham Festival of Music this year. At age seven, Pepe set foot on the concert stage for the first time, at the Teatro Lope de Vega in Sevilla. And now, more than fifty years later, he continues to mesmerize audiences throughout the world. Romero will perform on July 17. The festival has long been known for spectacular finales and this year is no exception. The July 21 concert will feature three of the most recognized sopranos in the world, all of whom have local connections. Frederica “Flicka” von Strade, Heidi Grant-Murphy and Katie Van Kooten will light up the Mount Baker Theatre with their vocal acrobatics.

A Royal Season —

Bard brings Standards, Surprises

Rachel Cairns plays Viola, who disguises herself as a man in the Bard on the Beach production of Twelfth Night.

Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, portrayed by Jonathon Young, is confronted by betrayal and murder in Hamlet.

by Christopher Key “If music be the food of love, play on,” intones the melancholy Duke Orsino in what may be Shakespeare’s most famous opening line. The Duke’s ennui will be severely tested as Vancouver, BC’s, Bard on the Beach inaugurates its 24th season with the beloved Twelfth Night. Bill pretty much set the standard for the classic mistaken-identity comedy with this one and wasn’t bashful about plagiarizing himself repeatedly. Bard’s production is set in 1913 at the What You Will Hotel and Spa. Feste is the lounge musician, Malvolio is the hotel manager and Olivia owns the whole thing. Dennis Garnhum, Artistic Director of Theatre Calgary, superintends the asylum. The not-so-fresh Prince of Denmark, one Hamlet by name, shares the mainstage tent at lovely Vanier Park. If anyone can out-melancholy Duke Orsino, Ham’s your boy. The iconic story is also an ageless reminder of the terrible damage done to any culture by those who seek power at the expense of their humanity.

Sereana Malani plays Isabella in the dark comedy, Measure for Measure, at the Bard on the Beach Shakespeare Festival.

Colleen Wheeler portrays the queen in the Bard on the Beach production of Elizabeth Rex.

Photos by David Cooper.

With that in mind, director Kim Collier, co-founder of Electric Theatre Company, sets the tragedy in our own times. I suspect Bard’s superb fight coach Nicholas Harrison will have a hand in the proceedings with a typically impressive body count. In the more intimate surroundings of the Douglas Campbell Studio Stage tent, we’ll come face-to-face with Shakespeare’s darkest comedy, Measure for Measure. Bard veteran John Murphy takes us to 1900s New Orleans as Duke Vincentio leaves the city in the hands of Angelo, a martinet of definitive proportions. This examination of hypocrisy, sexual repression and the true nature of justice is backed by the boisterous horns of New Orleans, a tribute to the time and birthplace of jazz. If the music for this show is as well done as that of last season’s Merry Wives of Windsor, it will be the don’t-miss production of the season. However, there are more royal shenanigans scheduled for the studio stage that could well give Measure a run

for its money. Elizabeth Rex is an award-winning script by Canadian playwright Timothy Findley. Another bard veteran, Rachel Ditor, directs. “I require distraction,” declares Queen Elizabeth I, when she suddenly appears in a barn where Shakespeare and his acting company are lodged overnight. She’s quite serious: a former lover of hers, the Earl of Essex, is jailed in the Tower of London for treason and will die by her order at dawn. As the hour of his execution draws closer, the Queen must reconcile her responsibilities as a leader with her feelings as a woman. “Vancouver audiences have told us they want to see us produce some non-Shakespearean works that complement his world and his themes,” said Bard Artistic Director Christopher Gaze. “Elizabeth Rex fits that description perfectly.” The season begins with Twelfth Night on June 12, oddly enough, and continues through September 14. Performances run Tuesdays – Sundays with 8:00 p.m. curtain times except for Sundays when curtain is at 7:00 p.m. Ticket prices range from $25-$43 (Cdn) and various discounts are available. For that information and a complete season schedule, consult the website: www.bardonthebeach.org. You can also purchase tickets online or by calling toll-free at 1-877-739-0559. This world-class festival regularly sells upward of 95 percent of available seats. In other words, get thy posterior into gear. Christopher Key is an actor and director who lives in Bellingham and writes to help support his theatrical addiction.

Calling All Kids — Even You Grown-Up Ones! by Michelle Wallace Who wants to grow up? Taxes, commutes, bills, business suits and the good ol’ 9-5? No thank you! Okay, hopefully we’re not all thinking that right now. But there’s no denying it: we all have our moments. Now’s your

chance to indulge yours. This month, come to Never Land with friends and family to celebrate being a kid! J.M. Barrie’s classic Peter Pan has been adapted for stage many times since his book first appeared in 1911. On Friday, June 14, the Northwest Washington Theatre Group will debut its British stage adaptation, which director Rosie Carter feels is most faithful to Barrie’s original tale of enchantment.

The Northwest Washington Theatre Group is a community theatre formed in 2003. Rosie, who joined the group in 2005, demonstrates the fresh, spirited and family-friendly approach that defines this group. “We surprise people with our shows,” she told me. “In my opinion, we go as close to professional as you can get in a non-professional setting.” Peter Pan is an all-ages musical for an all-ages crowd. “We cast anyone five and up, with no age limit,” Rosie told me. Actors also tend to return for show after show, excited to play supporting characters even if they’ve had a lead role before. This creates a uniquely well-rounded cast, well fit for this colorful, larger-than-life musical. Performed at the historic, acoustically excellent Mount Baker Theatre, this staging makes a splash with professional backdrops, flamboyant costuming and a live orchestra. Also, my lips are sealed, but the words “literally flying to the stage”

Above, L–R: NWTG’s production of Peter Pan features Isaiah Assink as Smee and Aaron Moreno as Captain Hook; John, Wendy and Michael are played by Lucas Assink, Hayley Assink and Chase Lindsey; Audrey Moreau plays Tinkerbell; Peter Pan is played by Micah Robertson. Photos by Amy Pike.

came up in my conversation with Rosie. So expect some surprises with this musical! Rosie has also invited local talent to professionally choreograph the most jaw-dropping dance scenes. “I think [these dances] will blow the audience away,” Rosie intoned as we chatted over coffee. Christie Peetoom, director of A Gift of Dance studio, and Lindsey Thies, a student at John Bishop’s Northwest Ballet, have planned the whole shebang. Everyone’s familiar with J.M. Barrie’s classic storyline, but we’re in for a real treat with this show. Rosie described it as the same lovable story with some fun new songs. “They’re catchy; everyone loves them. And that’s what makes it fresh.” The Northwest Washington Theatre Group is proud to work with local and developing actors and has a supportive approach to coaching and teaching. Though all ages and skill levels perform in this group, the volunteer crew helps everyone truly grow into their roles. This dynamic cast includes over sixty pirates, mermaids, fairies, lost boys, Indians and more – entering the stage with a bang (and maybe even some fog)! “Peter Pan is one of those stories we all remember; it’s all about having fun and being a kid again and never losing sight of that!” I couldn’t have put it better, Rosie. This upcoming show is colorful, spirited and fantastically mystical – just like the kid in every one of us. So mark your calendars for Friday and Saturday, June 14-15 at 7:30pm and a matinee on Saturday at 2pm! Tickets ($24 / $20 / $15 plus applicable fees) are on sale now at Mount Baker Theatre, 104 North Commercial Street, online at mountbakertheatre.com or via phone at 360-733-5793. A Meaningful Night on the Town by Michelle Wallace How often can you claim that your Friday night out will actually give 100% of proceeds to a local cause? Answer: Once a year, at the annual Girls Night Out! This year, the fun starts at 4pm on Friday, June 28, in Fairhaven – just look for the balloons! I spoke with Shannon Day and Ali Alsos, two of the event’s enthusiastic co-chairs. “It’s a great time to relax, and it’s such a beautiful venue,” Ali raved. As for the goodwill, Shannon explained, “We pay our bills, and everything else goes to PeaceHealth St. Joseph Cancer Center.” Last year, they raised just under $7,500 for St. Joseph Cancer Center. This year’s goal is $10,000, and they’ve added even more oomph to their festivities! Many Fairhaven merchants will open their doors from 4-8pm for the first portion of the event: Passport Shopping! Participants purchase a $15 “passport” at a participating retailer and visit stores with discounts, samples or a special guest. Once stamped by 10 businesses, your passport will turn into a raffle ticket for a fantastic prize. After the Passport Shopping, participants can head down to the Fairhaven Cruise Terminal for silent and live auctions, music, backyard games, a fashion show, food and drinks from 8-11pm. Your passport serves as entry into the cruise terminal party, or you can purchase a $15 ticket right at the door. The Art Festival at Peace Arch Park by Osa Hale Summer in the Northwest is a feast for the senses: sunshine and lush greenery, blue skies and blossoming life. On June 22 and 23, an elaborate festival of arts will complement these natural delights. The festival will be held at Peace Arch Park, a celebration of diversity and beauty with a view of Semiahmoo Bay and the San Juan Islands. This is the inaugural year of the International Art Festival at Peace Arch Park, which was organized by Diane and Brian Major, who have been part of the regional art scene for many years. After participating in studio tours and experiencing firsthand how difficult it can be to see all of the art that is scattered throughout the area, the Majors were inspired to gather artists in one location. Serendipitously, Diane says, they were informed that it was the 100th anniversary of the Washington State Parks, making the Peace Arch Park an easy choice. Approximately 65 artists from around Washington, California, Montana, Idaho

the richness and the diversity of the world,” Diane said. “The art is for sale, the gourmet food is for sale, the music is to be enjoyed and the environment of this festival is to be taken in to nourish your soul.” The International Art Festival at Peace Arch Park will be taking place on Sat., June 22 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sun., June 23, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The festival is free to visit, and though half of the parking lot will be open for free

parking, guests are strongly encouraged to purchase a Discover Pass, which would allow for parking in the other half of the lot, as well as at any other Washington State Park. Discover Passes can be bought for the day or the year. Should the lot fill up, Diane says there will be plenty of street parking within a reasonable walking distance. Though this is the first time a unique event like this has been held at the Peace Arch Park, it will not be the last, Diane says. She hopes to keep it going for years to come. “Art has been our life, and art has given us so many opportunities,” she said. “This is a way for us to give back and to show other people how wonderful art can be.” Osa Hale has been a regular contributor to Entertainment News NW since 2012. She is a senior at Western Washington University, majoring in Visual Journalism. Her work has also appeared on Bellingham’s KOMO News website, the Western Front, and Klipsun magazine.

Those who attend the festival will have the opportunity to observe visual art of all types, including painting, woodwork, quilting, textiles, sculptures and jewelry, along with music and dance, including local jazz groups and a tai chi presentation. “One of our goals for this festival has been to include as many disciplines as possible,” Diane said. “We invite everyone to visit the park, indulge in the finest our region has to offer and walk email editor@ennw.info • See www.ennw.info for “News, Reviews and Updates”

Collectors Flock to Art Auction by Christopher Key There are two things you can count on in the spring: the tulips in Skagit County and the annual art auction at the Museum of Northwest Art in La Conner. Both celebrate the beauty that surrounds us in this corner of the nation, but what you walk away with from the auction may last a bit longer. Since 1981, the mission of MoNA has been to collect, preserve, exhibit, and interpret art by Northwest artists. Literally hundreds of Northwest artists have exhibited at the museum and one of the ways the museum keeps on keepin’ on is the annual Art Auction. This year marks the 21st anniversary of the event. It all begins on June 15 at 5pm. This has been described as the perfect event for both seasoned and novice art collectors, featuring more than 300 works by painters, printmakers, sculptors, glass artists, ceramic artists, jewelers, textile artists and photographers. Purchase tickets at $100 per person, or reserve tables of 4 at $600, 6 at $900, or 8 at $1200 available on first come, first serve basis. Auction previews, open to ticketholders and their guests, begin Friday, June 14, 12-5pm and continue Saturday, June 15, 10am-3pm. (Absentee bidding is available with ticket purchase.) The auction also provides an opportunity to meet MoNA’s new Executive Director, Christopher Shainin, who was named to the position in March after a nationwide search. “I grew up in the Skagit Valley, and have been inspired by its natural beauty as have many of the most important artists in the region. I am excited to return to this very special place,” Shainin said. For more ticket information go to www.museumofnwart.org or phone 360-466-4446 ext. 109.
