Seriously, Funny Theatre! by Lauren Peterson February in the Northwest is the perfect time for a side-splitting comedy, and Mount Baker Theatre is delivering a full run of opportunities with the next MBT Rep production. “Our goal with our annual Winter Rep selection is to lighten the mood during the dark winter months,” says Program Manager Alison C. Terry, “and The Nerd by Larry Shue is no exception.” The Nerd runs Feb. 12-28. This two-act comedic play presents the story of an ex-GI, Willum Cubbert, who experiences a surprise visit from a man who had once saved his life, but is now an awkward, nerdy, and often inappropriate figure. When this “nerd” overstays his welcome, Cubbert is hilariously pushed to the brink. Since 2004, the Walton Theatre has created the ideal space for experiencing Mount Baker Theatre’s talented and dynamic MBT Rep. The intimate environment of “the Walton” allows for an accessible journey alongside actors through all the forms of entertainment that live performance can bring. Terry says, “MBT Rep is your local, professional theatre, up close. With each of our MBT Rep productions, we seek to foster collaboration among the many talents of local and regional working theatre professionals.” These professionals include Theatre Puget Sound Gregory Award Winners Teresa Thuman (director, The 39 Steps and The Underpants) and Kathryn Van Meter (choreographer, Forever Plaid), as well as local favorites Conner Peirson (now on the Broadway tour of The Book of Mormon), Akilah Williams, and T. J. Anderson. Joining us this February for The Nerd is the award-winning director Corey McDaniel, who has directed, taught, and acted in numerous countries, including

Italy, Brazil, and Japan. McDaniel’s excitement about The Nerd and its staging in the Walton Theatre is clear. In his opinion, The Nerd is “in the top five funniest plays ever written.” He believes that the Walton Theatre couldn’t suit the play any better, saying, “What I love most about the Walton is that it brings the audience into the intimacy

of the lead character’s home. Rather than creating an environment where the audience feels as if they are outside of the story, I think the Walton will bring them inside and thus much, much closer to the experiences that the actors are having.” Shue’s broad comedy will have you laughing right along with (and frequently at) these great characters. We hope you will join these characters in the Walton Theatre – Willum Cubbert’s living room – for an evening that you won’t soon forget.

A (Recurring) Night at the Majestic: On the Menu: Steamy, Dreamy Jazz by Deborah M. Bernard It’s a Wednesday night in December, somewhere in America. A crowd of jazz music aficionados have gathered, as they often do, in a grand basement, anticipating being part of America’s true art form, a night of improv jazz. And the greats are here: Dr. Lonnie Smith, the Hammond Organ B-3 Legend; Dan Balmer, guitar player and inductee into several jazz halls of fame; Corey Weeds, alto sax extraordinaire; and drummer Julian MacDonough, a professional musician who’s performed on over 70 albums.

WJMAC founder and educator Julian MacDonough and WWU jazz studies director Kevin Woods work with a Whatcom Jazz Music Arts Center student. Photo courtesy of Sandy Carter.

The music enthralls from the first note. The crowd of 100 breaks into spontaneous applause. Dr. Smith’s complex keyboard riffs; Dan Balmer’s guitar gently weeps, and then soars; Corey Weeds’ heart-throbbing sax notes, Julian’s brush strokes and cymbals making this set so steamy and dreamy. They are reaching into our souls and mystically resonating with the audience. Wow! As with all improv, this is an unrepeatable performance. Where are we? Chicago? New Orleans? New York? No. We are at The Majestic on North Forest Street in Bellingham. Shows like this have been happening in Bellingham every Wednesday night since October 2014, thanks to the passion—and extremely hard work—of Julian MacDonough, award winning drummer and educator who founded the Whatcom Jazz Music Arts Center (WJMAC) in the basement of The Majestic.

22

MacDonough founded WJMAC “to bring world class jazz music to our little town. Being a professional jazz musician myself, I have a lot of really cool friends who are world class musicians,” MacDonough said. (He performs over 200 times a year.) “And, since Bellingham is strategically located between Seattle and Vancouver, it’s natural that a touring band would drop by.” World-class jazz musicians are eager to perform here because they’ve heard that Bellingham audiences are enthusiastic about jazz, he said. Imagine, they want to come and see us because they’ve heard that we want to see them! A match made in jazz heaven, no? The other half of the WJMAC equation is education. Julian saw the need for area high school students to learn true combo jazz. The Bellingham Youth Jazz Band helps middle schoolers learn jazz basics but, previously, there were no opportunities for these students to learn improvisation and perform in small combos once they reached high school. MacDonough spearheaded the Student Combo Classes. He brings his love of teaching, instructing not only drums, but also jazz combos. This program is now available to all ages! “These kids had zero improvisational skills a year ago October. Within five months they really GOT it,” MacDonough said. “Personality really shines through the music—if you let it.” “The students work with three or four professionals at a time,” he said. When they’re ready, they perform for the public. There’s a student concert every Monday night from 7-9pm. “It’s not a restaurant, it’s not a bar, it’s a focused jazz club. I think Bellingham has been wanting this for a long time, but there just hasn’t been an opportunity, or somebody nutty enough to try to pull this off,” MacDonough laughed. If you love jazz, or if you just LIKE jazz and want to promote this program for our community, you have at least two opportunities a week to make that happen. There are student jazz combos every Monday night, from 7-9pm. Every Wednesday night at 7pm, there are local and regional concerts which are $10-$15. Entertainment News Northwest ~ February 2016

National concerts are from $20-$25. OR you can save money and help this great organization by becoming a member at $25 a month, giving you free access to local concerts and half price on other concerts.

Every Monday night, WJMAC students learn from some of the best jazz musicians in the northwest. These students also have the opportunity to perform concerts throughout the year. Photo courtesy of Leon James.

Here’s what’s happening this month. Feb. 3: NYC guitarist Mark Elf with Michael Glynn on bass; and Greg Williamson on drums. Feb. 10: Ralph Kolin presents: A jazz fan picks the band and material! Josh Cook, tenor sax; Kevin Woods, trumpet; Miles Black, piano; Michael Glynn, bass and Julian MacDonough, drums. Feb. 17: Kevin Woods Trio Feb 24: Miles Black Octet: Steve Kaldestad, tenor sax; Mark Taylor, alto sax; Dave Kiem, trombone; Kevin Woods, trumpet; baritone sax player tba; Miles Black, piano; Michael Glynn, bass; and Julian MacDonough, drums. Come and support your local jazz community while enjoying free parking, no traffic, no cover charge, affordable tickets, and a true jazz ambience. Visit www.wjmac.org for more information.

WWU Orchestra Winter Concert –

Tribute or appropriation? Parody or homage? Join the WWU Symphony Orchestra for an evening exploring musical representations of the “exotic other,” featuring music from Europe and the United States. Contrast Berlioz’s bombastic Hungarian March from his opera The Damnation of Faust with the homegrown, folk-rooted Dance Suite of Bartok. Closer to home, the early American composer Gottschalk’s virtuosic imitation of antebellum banjo techniques creates a wonderful opportunity for discussion when paired with William Grant Still’s groundbreaking Afro-American Symphony. Join us for the concert on Mon., Feb. 1 at 7:30pm in the WWU PAC Concert Hall. Free admission. More info: 360-650-7640, Heather.Dalberg@wwu.edu or www.cfpa.wwu.edu/event/wwu-orchestra.

Whatcom Symphony Orchestra Premiers “Harmony from Discord: Music That Transcends Oppression” by Marla Bronstein On Sunday, March 6, the Whatcom Symphony Orchestra will premiere the first concert in its multiyear initiative, “Harmony from Discord: Music That Transcends Oppression.” Maestro Yaniv Attar first conceived the program with the intention to include inspirational and classical pieces that were multi-dimensional for audiences of all ages. The works chosen are uplifting, and honor the composers’ abilities to celebrate life through music as a response to oppression. When Maestro Attar and WSO Executive Director Thom Mayes sat down to program the music, Mayes realized there was enough material available for more than one concert. The compositions programmed include works that were banned from being played in Germany at the time of the Holocaust; works composed in response to oppression, some during the era of the Holocaust, some of which were written from within the confines of the death camps; and works that have been inspired by the events of the Holocaust. On the program for March 2016, is the west coast premiere of Concerto for Flute, Viola, Piano and Strings by Hungarian composer László Weiner, featuring pianist Jessica Choe, violist Susan Gulkis Assadi, and flutist Zart Dombourian-Eby. This triple concerto was written during the time Weiner was in the Lukov labor camp. Weiner never heard this work performed before his death in 1944. Many of his compositions have survived because Hungarian violist Pál Lukács published them in the 1950s and 60s. Maestro Attar has invited Noemi Ban, a Holocaust survivor who also happens to be Hungarian, to speak briefly during the concert. “Ms. Ban has a great love of life and appreciation of every breath,” says Attar. Ms. Ban, author of Sharing is

Healing, is one of only three living survivors of the concentration camp in Buchenwald, and speaks all over the country about surviving her time there. Also programmed for the concert is Symphony No. 5 in D minor by Dimitri Shostakovich, written in response to oppression by, and criticism from, the Soviet government in the 1930s. Although many concertgoers will recognize some composers’ names, many will be unfamiliar, as American orchestras rarely perform their compositions. One work already programmed for the 2016-2017 season is Symphony No.2 by

Entertainment News Northwest ~ February 2016

Czech composer Erwin Schulhoff. His name may sound familiar to some, as many of his works have been recorded. Schulhoff is occasionally referred to as the “Gershwin of Europe” due to his jazz influenced orchestrations, and his sometimes avant-garde style. Schulhoff composed many classical pieces in the 1920s and 30s, including his most well known opera, The Communist Manifesto. In June 1941, Schulhoff was deported to the Wülzburg concentration camp as a result of his being a communist, a homosexual, and a Jew. He died in the camp from tuberculosis in 1942. Ramona Abbott, Marketing Manager of the WSO said that early feedback from the symphony supporters showed that the community was excited for the performance and shared the information via social media. Maestro Attar is confident that this kind of program would not have worked in just any community, and Whatcom County’s open- minded audiences welcome this kind of programming. Maestro Attar’s passion for this concert series is fueled by his pledge to perform the pieces to keep them alive, to give a sustained voice to the composers’ works, and to allow them to continue to live and breathe. The music illuminates the human ability to transcend human atrocities. More than anything, “Harmony from Discord” is intended to be life affirming. The music speaks to the human condition, and it can relate to the present day, just as it did back then. The concert will take place on Sunday, March 6 at 3pm at Mount Baker Theatre. Bellingham Human Rights Film Festival 16th Season by Marla Bronstein The year 2000 saw the first Bellingham Human Rights Film Festival (BHRFF) organized in Whatcom County, thanks to Brenna Forester and Graham Hammy of the Whatcom Film Association (now known as Pickford Film Center or PFC). The mission of BHRFF is to encourage learning and action concerning global issues through independent film and community discourse in the Bellingham and Whatcom County region. This year, the festival runs from February 19-27. The opening night reception starts at 7pm at Pickford Film

Center, with a fundraising auction taking place in the Pickford lobby before the 8pm showing of Groundswell, a film about fracking. In nine days, the festival will present 24 films chosen out of the 54 films that were screened, originating from seven different countries. Screenings are taking place in 14 different venues all over Whatcom County, including PFC, Fairhaven College, Whatcom Museum, and the Deming, Ferndale, and Bellingham Public Libraries. The films focus on issues such as immigrants, homelessness, women and violence, education, and the environment. A BHRFF committee member will introduce each film. Following each film, either the director or someone closely connected to the film will lead a discussion. Action sheets with information about local organizations that are working on the issues addressed in the films will be available for those who want more information or are looking to get involved. For the films screened at Fairhaven College, local non-profit organizations associated with the films’ issues are being invited to host an information table.

32

Whatcom County businesses, organizations and restaurants have donated goods and services for the auction, which raises funds to keep the festival free. Yes, free. Every movie is free because a contingent of passionate

Whatcom County residents believe that the issues that are the substance of the films shown are important for everyone to be able to see. Colleen Curtis and Shirley Osterhaus attended that first film festival fifteen years ago, and have been on the committee that pulls it together ever since. This year, the steering committee has grown to include more than twodozen people. It’s not a simple task. Films need to be screened and chosen, venues are booked, and speakers are scheduled. Entertainment News Northwest ~ February 2016

The local organizations that support the work and the issues of the films shown are invited. Then there are the basic administrative jobs with any grassroots organization: marketing, publicity, fundraising, and soliciting volunteers who help to keep this worthwhile project alive. Two films beings shown this year are on the shortlist for the 88th Academy Awards Documentary Feature category. 3 1/2 Minutes, Ten Bullets is a film about violence and racism. Also shortlisted is The Hunting Ground, a film about rape on college campuses that is being sponsored by Fairhaven College and the

Women’s Sexuality and Gender Studies Department. Ross Marquardt, a five year BHRFF Committee member, assured me that there are uplifting films as well. Language Healers is about native peoples working to revitalize their languages. Honor Totem documents the story of the memorial healing totem to honor Seattle Native carver John T. Williams. Kickflips Over Occupation details the meaning for youth of the emerging skateboard scene in Palestine. The Festival schedule with dates, times, locations and film lengths can be found at their website: www.bhrff.webs.com. The BHRFF is also looking for volunteers to help with the various tasks involved with the festival. If you are interested, you can sign up on their website and let them know you would like to volunteer. Images courtesy of Pickford Film Center.
