Bellingham Figure Skating Club to Reprise “North Pole Express” on Ice by April Metz de Montiel All aboard! Grab your golden tickets and get ready for a magical ride on the North Pole Express on Ice! Snuggle up with your family, and munch on some home baked goodies while sipping hot cocoa. Feast your eyes on a menagerie of reindeer and elves, wolves and rabbits, toys and bells as they skate their way into your heart. This is the familiar story of a little boy and girl who find the magic of Christmas aboard the enchanted train on their way to the North Pole. The December Ice show is the largest fundraiser of the year for the non-profit Bellingham Figure Skating Club and will showcase several ice-dance solos and synchronized group sets. The BFSC comprises 30 families and skaters, with several skaters competing in regional and sectional competitions. Also highlighted will be Learn-To-Skate students, ages preschool on up, who take weekly lessons at the Sportsplex. The Learn-To-Skate program offers beginning and adult classes and offers a ratio of 8-1 in a nurturing and safe environment. The BFSC prides itself on being an inclusive program, inviting participation from athletes of all abilities, skaters from the Western Washington University Figure Skating Club and a past competitor of the Special Olympics, Scott Orvikb. Micah Lynette, the winner of this year’s regional Jr. Men’s silver medal, will skate as the character, The Train. Sasha Lynette will also be performing a duet with her brother, Micah. Another sibling duo, Carolina and Steven Kovacevic will be playing the main characters. Keri Ferguson, Artistic Director of the BFSC, has choreographed many holiday favorites as well as contemporary pieces. Keri describes The North Pole Express as a “production of various traditional favorites, coupled with the magical story of the famous train and every child’s anticipation of Santa’s visit!” Assistant Director, Karlyn Hungate adds, “Our skaters have been practicing at least twice a week since September to bring

this show together.” The set director, Mike Pagano, has created an impressive set with a realistic train. Parent volunteers work many long hours off the ice while their children practice on ice. Skating parent, Tassie Kowal is the President of Bellingham Figure Skating Club. She states that, “Over the past eight years that we have been part of our local skating community, I have loved watching how much energy and fun these kids put into learning and performing their parts for the show. The joy they get from this opportunity to skate as a group is the backbone of this production year after year. As a parent, I enjoy seeing how much my daughter loves putting in the hard work and the reward of the friendship and memories that come with it.” The fundraiser includes not only ticket sales, but a gift basket raffle and bake sale. Hot coffee and cocoa are available for purchase at the concession stand. This event is a perfect way to enjoy the

PAPO Retrospective Exhibition by Nancy Canyon Fourth Corner Gallery & Frames invites you to celebrate PAPO Retrospective, an exhibition showing November 18 thru December 24, with a festive opening reception taking place during Bellingham’s Downtown Art Walk on December 2. The event showcases plein-air (in the open air) paintings completed over the past eleven years during PAPO (Plein Air Paint Out). Sheri Wright, owner of Fourth Corner Gallery states, “The historical preservation of life that’s happened and continues to happen in our town is important to us. The retrospective will show this in a series of paintings completed since 2005.” PAPO’s founder, Trish Harding explains, “My dream was to have a huge group of plein-air painters show up yearly to paint images of the downtown corridor. Wade Marlow, then the owner of Blue Horse Gallery, encouraged me: ‘If you organize it, I’ll show it.’ ’’ Originally as many as seventy participants, from beginner to advanced, set up along Holly and adjacent streets during the two-day event. Trish Harding says, “Now closer to twenty participants brave the elements yearly, living with whatever weather we’re given: rain, wind, some sunny days, to paint scenes representing Bellingham.” True to his word, Wade Marlow displayed the paintings at Blue Horse Gallery, including depictions of Holly Street, GP, Mount Baker Theatre, the Granary Building, and more. Now AnMorgan Curry curates the annual PAPO show at Mindport Exhibits, hanging paintings in the modern gallery on Holly Street. PAPO is now a one-day event rather than two. Artists have five hours to paint equisized canvases before relinquishing them in whatever state of completion, to UFO Gallery. Framing is standardized as well, each piece being exhibited in an identical gold plein-air frame provided by Fourth Corner Frames—leveling the 6

playing field for beginning painters when showing beside more advanced painters. Over the past eleven years, PAPO artists, including Joy Olney, Ron Pattern, Ann Chaikin, and Harding herself, set-up French easels on street corners and mid-block, choosing favorite urban

painting building and ever-changing sky. During the interview, I mentioned how challenged I’d felt that day; after all, I’m mainly a studio artist. Harding says, “Painting outside is challenging. I tell my students who say painting inside is hard: studio painting is easy. Vermeer had to

scenes to render. “Paint Outs” offer an opportunity for artists to work together and for the public to witness the obstacles involved in painting in all sorts of weather. Harding clarifies, “The artist learns to be responsive with paint rather than over controlling it. And to see light, embracing constant change, letting the painting be what it is.” The PAPO Retrospective will mark time, as the paintings completed through the years detail buildings no longer standing and iconic landmarks, such as The Horseshoe Cafe, which has remained much the same all these years. When I participated in PAPO 2011, I set up on Holly Street, overlooking the Granary Building, which is currently in renovation. grind his own pigments. That was hard. Now we go to the art store and buy beautiful colors already made. Plein air pushes the envelope.” I nodded in agreement. The painting I did that breezy day in 2011 raised money for the Whatcom Humane Society, making all the hard work worthwhile. Fourth Corner Gallery & Frames invites you to view eleven years of plein-air paintings exhibited by artists from all around the city and state. The show hangs at 311 W. Holly Street through December 24, with a reception Friday, December 2 from 6-10pm. More info: 360-734 1340, framr4u@gmail.com or www.studio-ufo.net.

The chaotic and almost endless detail is transformed into designs of great complexity and organization. The exhibit is on display throughout the Main and East Tower entrances to the medical center through Jan. 21. More info: ldg@fidalgo.net , 360-383-7166 or www.luciadouglas.com.

Each year, Whatcom County’s Toys for Tots program helps make the holiday season possible for over 2,500 children in Whatcom County. During the first three Friday and Saturdays in December, our community and local businesses donate new, unwrapped toys, and cash donations. Toys for Tots volunteers collect, store, and distribute the toys to Whatcom country families. The Toys For Tots organization is 100% non-profit, and all donations stay local. This year, we are happy to announce that Safeway/ Albertsons in Bellingham has donated their store at 1650 Birchwood Ave. for the Toys For Tots Distribution Center (off of Northwest Ave. near the Salvation Army). The Distribution Center will be open from 9am to 5pm on December 2, 3, 9, 10, 16, and 17. The last day to donate toys will be December 17. There are many ways to support the program including over 120 drop-off locations throughout Whatcom County that accept cash or toy donations. Cash collected helps buy toys for the campaign. Drop off locations include: Yeager’s Sporting Goods, all five Haggen stores, Little Caesar’s Pizza, Walgreens, and many more. Paper “Toy Train Cut-outs” are also available for $1 at Hardware Sales, Little Caesar’s and all five local area Haggen. Cash donations help us purchase toys at a bulk toy discount, sometimes as much as 25% off during toy buys made locally. All donations are kept within Whatcom County, and never leave the local campaign. This charity is run entirely by volunteers, and 97% of all donations go directly to toys, not overhead. For those who would like to participate as a donor or make a donation online, please visit us via Facebook or visit our website at www.bellingham-wa.toysfortots.org. Irish Tenors Christmas Comes to MBT by Justin Hawkinson Expect evergreen trees, tuxedos, and jingling bells when the singing group The Irish Tenors comes to Bellingham. The 2016 Christmas / Holiday Gala Concert will be presented at The Mount Baker Theatre on Wednesday, December 14 at 7pm. The singers plan to perform in California, Texas, Massachusetts, and New Jersey before bringing their show to Benaroya Hall in Seattle on Tuesday the 13th. Bellingham will be the last stop of the year. Tickets cost $20.50-$69.50 and can be purchased by calling the theater box office at 360-734-6080 or following the links at www.mountbakertheatre.com. The concert promises a full orchestra to back up the trio as they present Irish favorites such as “Danny Boy” and “Be Thou My Vision” in the first set. With authentic accents and just the right amount of humor, The Irish Tenors have become the gold standard for classics of the Emerald Isle. The second set will include several holiday favorites including “We Three Kings” and “O Holy Night.” Three of their albums have been dedicated to Christmas music, and they have made many familiar songs their own. Ronan Tynan, Finbar Wright and Anthony Kearns have all been in the spotlight for some time. The group first delighted American audiences in 1998 when PBS recruited them to record a concert special, titled simply The Irish Tenors: Live in Dublin. Their performance proved to be so popular with American audiences that the group went on to make four more PBS specials and record at least eight albums. Among their most visible performances has been singing “God Bless America” at major sporting events as well as singing for presidents and other world leaders. The three tenors have made a habit of touring North America twice a year – before Christmas and around St. Patrick’s Day. They call themselves the “honorary ambassadors of Ireland and its legendary music.” Whether it’s the sad melodies of yesteryear or a toe-tapping Christmas carol, The Irish Tenors are dedicated to connecting emotionally to their audience. In their own words, “We invite you to experience the beautiful music of our country at a concert in the near future – it will be our absolute pleasure to warmly

welcome you and richly entertain you. Until then, we wish you good health, happiness and success in all you do.” This show is sponsored by Marv and Joan Wayne. The 2016-2017 season sponsor is Saturna Capital.

The Mount Baker Theatre will also host the musical Mamma Mia for two shows at 3pm and 7:30pm on Sunday, December 18. This show combines a fun story with the timeless music of ABBA. Tickets range from $44.50$99.50 and can be purchased on the Mount Baker Theatre website.

An Evening With the Fisher Brothers by Marla Bronstein On December 8, The Lincoln Theatre in Mount Vernon will host “An Evening with the Fisher Brothers.” This multi-media event features music icon Roger Fisher (bottom left), the founding guitarist of the rock group Heart, and his brother Mike (AKA the Magic Man) (at right), manager, producer, sound engineer, and all around visionary. They are celebrating the release of their newest album, All Told, which coincides with the 40th Anniversary of the release of Heart’s Dreamboat Annie. The evening will showcase the brothers’ musical and personal transformation through film, personal interviews and live music by Roger Fisher and the Human Tribe. All Told is the first release of a four-album project entitled One Vision. This multi-media project speaks to the world in its current state, shares hopes for the future, and encompasses lessons learned over the past 40 years. All Told is a musical journey of Roger’s life, according to Mike. Roger says “The creative spark for this project started in 1995, when I realized that most of what I did musically was either for fame or money. The spark burst into flame, resulting in four albums of great material.” The stunning album covers were created with the assistance of the late Wes Griswold. Each cover is 1/4 of a big picture. The four albums will dovetail lyrics, melodies, subject matter, and visuals. The second of the four albums, Forest Rain is anticipated to be released by the spring. After the performance, the audience will participate in a Q&A with Roger and Mike. Questions that are philosophical, political, or personal are welcome. The Fisher brothers promise the dialogue will range from serious to hysterically funny, and that the audience will leave feeling uplifted and inspired. Tickets are $20-$30, and can be purchased at the Lincoln Theatre Box Office, by phone or in person, and also online at www.lincolntheatre.org. Images courtesy of Roger Fisher.

Guitarist Eli Schille-Hudson, BHS Graduate, to Give Welcome Home Concert Eli Schille-Hudson, a guitarist now studying at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, will be the featured artist at Bellingham Festival of Music’s 7th annual Welcome Home Concert on Saturday, January 7 at 7pm at the First Congregational Church of Bellingham, 2401 Cornwall Ave. The public is invited to attend. Admission is free for students, and a donation of $15 is suggested for adults. For each of the past six seasons, the Bellingham Festival of Music (BFM) has presented an emerging musician of promise who is studying in a nationally recognized music program. These annual recitals are a way to recognize the accomplishments of the artists, their teachers, and the community that supported their early training. The program complements the festival’s other outreach initiatives, including master classes, support of the fifth grade strings programs in the public schools, Beethoven-in-theSchools, and Play it Forward Chamber Music Residencies. A native of Bellingham, Eli Schille-Hudson began his musical studies at the age of nine. No stranger to a variety of styles, his studies commenced and continued with steel-string and electric guitar, folk, blues, jazz, and rock n’ roll with local teacher Sher Vadinska. At the age of 16, he discovered his passion for classical music and classical guitar, and devoted himself to that pursuit under the guidance of local teacher Jordan Batterman. After graduating from Bellingham High School in 2013, he began his collegiate studies at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, where he is currently in his senior year. As a recipient of the Barbara and David Jacobs Scholarship, he studies under Maestro Ernesto Bitetti. At Indiana, Eli has participated in master classes with world-renowned artists Jorge Caballero and Zoran Dukic, and he traveled this past summer to Darmstadt, Germany, where he studied extensively with guitarist and composer Tilman Hoppstock at the Akademie for Tonkunst, Darmstadt. He placed second in the Undergraduate Instrumental category at the 2016 Indianapolis Matinee Musicale competition, and fourth at the 2015 University of Louisville Guitar Competition. He plays on a 2013 Dake Traphagen guitar, handmade here in Bellingham. For more information, visit www.bellinghamfestival.org.

Holiday Magic Concert features Something for Everyone to Enjoy by Deborah M. Bernard Ah, the magic of the Christmas season in Bellingham! So many concerts and performances that delight your ears and spark joy to your soul! But, you are looking for a concert that your whole family can enjoy. Is it possible? Or are visions of sugarplums dancing in your head obscuring your vision? What if there could be a concert with the finest symphony music, the finest music chorales, but also a beloved Christmas movie in a historical theatre, accompanied by an orchestra? What if the children were allowed, no, even encouraged to wear their pajamas? Children of all ages? And what if teenagers could get in free if they were with an adult? Wouldn’t it be cool if this all took place in the architectural treasure setting of Mount Baker Theatre? And wouldn’t it be awesome if hot cocoa and marshmallows were served at intermission? If only all these elements could come together, it would be a Christmas dream come true. You’re not dreaming! The Whatcom Symphony Orchestra (WSO) Holiday Magic concert is Sunday, December 4 at 3pm at Mount Baker Theatre. “This year we are excited to have a mix of old and new in our repertoire, blending many different holiday traditions,” says Ramona Abbott, WSO Interim Executive Director. “We’re bringing back the choral music we all love to hear this time of year, and adding a terrific movie element for the kid in all of us.” The first half of the concert will feature the Bellingham Chamber Chorale performing Rutter’s “Gloria,” conducted by Artistic Director Ryan Smit. The Bellingham Chamber Chorale “presents diverse, challenging and eclectic choral concerts to entertain and inspire our audiences and members; our passion is to bring world-class musical experiences to our Pacific Northwest community. We provide performance and mentorship opportunities for young musicians.” The Whatcom Chorale, conducted by Artistic Director Deborah Brown, will perform seasonal favorites in addition to an original piece composed by Scott Henderson, former Executive Director of the WSO. His piece, “The Feast of Lights,” is based on Emma Lazarus’ 1882

poem retelling the Hanukkah story, and was composed for the Whatcom Symphony and the Whatcom Chorale. The Whatcom Chorale is a 100-person, community-based Bellingham choir, “dedicated to presenting concerts, both accompanied and a cappella, and to sharing the joy of singing with the community.” “Speaking for the Whatcom Chorale, we are thrilled to be performing once again with the WSO, and especially pleased to be performing, among other seasonal works, the world premiere of a new piece written by Scott Henderson explicitly for Whatcom Chorale and WSO,” said Garland Richmond, President, Whatcom Chorale Board of Directors. The second half of the program will be something new for the WSO: the orchestra will be playing live accompaniment to the beloved holiday

movie classic, “The Snowman,” as the movie is projected on the screen at Mount Baker Theatre. The concert closes with “Sleigh Ride,” another seasonal favorite, conducted by WSO Music Director, Yaniv Attar. “This is an extraordinary opportunity to introduce younger family members to the joys of classical music,” says Abbott. “To make it even more fun for the little ones, we encourage you to let them wear their pajamas to the concert, and we will have hot cocoa with marshmallows in the Encore Room. Betsy Stuen-Walker’s music students will play holiday favorites during intermission.” The concert takes place Sunday, December 4 at 3pm at the Mount Baker Theatre. Tickets start at $15. This is a Take-A-Teen concert, with a free ticket available for anyone under 19 when purchased with a full-price adult ticket. Kulshan Chorus Winter Concert presents LIGHT

December 10, 7:30pm, Bellingham High School Auditorium Altogether, 107 voices embody this community choir, which will be celebrating its 30th season. The Winter Concert, according to President of the Board Sonja Lee, will not be a holiday concert, as much as an exploration of this natural season of darkness and its juxtaposition with light. Lee adds that “with the passing of the years, I have been witness to the evolution of this beloved community chorus. Now, in its 30th year, we are a powerhouse for peace and social justice. With a phenomenal director, over 100 highly talented and dedicated singers, and amazing local musicians all working in cooperation, we strive to create experiences for our audience that are unique and life-affirming. In this winter’s concert, we explore light, interweaving light and dark, letting you, the audience, journey with us… delving into facets of emotion through song with intention and purpose, and exposing all in this odyssey of light.” Dustin Willetts will direct the diverse repertoire and The Atlantics will accompany the chorus on select pieces. The dynamic Willetts is known for his ability to take passionate musicians and cultivate them to reach a higher level of artistry. Vocalists have been rehearsing this inspiring collaboration twice a week since September. An event the whole family can enjoy, the Kulshan Chorus’ mission statement defines themselves as a “multicultural choir committed to music education and celebrating the common bonds of humanity through music.” Tickets are on Brown Paper Tickets or can be purchased in person at the downtown Community Food Co-op and Village Books. 2016 Downtown “Light Up the Holidays” Festivities The Downtown Bellingham Partnership and the City of Bellingham have unveiled this year’s holiday events and activities as part of their ongoing work to foster a healthy, vital, and vibrant downtown. 2016’s holiday season kicked off on Nov. 26 with Shop Small Saturday, a one-day event highlighting downtown’s shopping scene while celebrating local businesses. Shoppers will have the opportunity to pick up a Shop Small Passport at participating businesses and will receive stamps with purchases at local retailers. Completed passports can then be entered to win local gift packages. Holiday fun continues with Art Walk on Friday, Dec. 2 from 6-10pm. The festive Art Walk features almost 50 venues including holiday bazars and pop-up craft shows. A downtown staple, the Depot Market Square will host a special Tree Lighting Ceremony on Sat., Dec. 3. The tree lighting will feature a meet-n-greet with Santa, free hot cocoa and cookies provided by Woods Coffee, seasonal popsicle flavors from West Coast Pops, ornament making activities, carolers, live music, and a performance of The Nutcracker. The event begins at 5:30pm with the official tree lighting at 6pm. Culminating this year’s holiday events, the final Commercial Street Night Market of 2016 is on Fri., Dec. 9 from 6-10pm. Taking place in the Commercial Street alleyway, vendors and activities can be found throughout the courtyard and space. The carefully curated event features artisan vendors, local food, live entertainment, and a 21+ beverage garden. To support downtown’s holiday festivities, parking on the bottom and top floors of the Commercial Street Parking Garage is free for the entire month of December, courtesy of the City of Bellingham. The free Holiday Parking program is designed to make it easier for locals and tourists alike to visit and stay in the downtown area. In addition, new decorative snowflakes are being installed downtown on the city’s main streets. The new snowflakes, which replace aging ones last used in 2014, come as a welcome addition as the decorations are widely considered the icon for the downtown holiday season. The Downtown Bellingham Partnership worked in tandem with the City of Bellingham to create this year’s theme of Light Up the Holidays, a play on the many improvements and developments in the city’s downtown. “We’re glad to partner with the Downtown Bellingham Partnership to support our downtown businesses and our arts and civic organizations,” Bellingham Mayor Kelli Linville, said. “We look forward to this holiday season of fun, family-oriented events, unique shopping and dining, and everything else our vibrant downtown has to offer.” For more information on this year’s holiday events, visit the Downtown Bellingham Partnership’s website at www.downtownbellingham.com/holidays. Live Local; Buy Local for the Holidays by Courtney Kendall This holiday season, give the gift of local by supporting our local businesses in Whatcom and Skagit County. Once again, Sustainable Connections is promoting their annual Buy Local for the Holidays campaign by bringing awareness to the importance of patronizing local businesses during the busiest shopping season of the year. “When you are buying local, you’re helping your friends and neighbors,” Membership and Think Local First Coordinator Becca Weathers says. When you shop at local businesses the money spent will stay in our community three times longer. “This multiplier effect results from these businesses buying from local suppliers and hiring local service providers,” which in turn means more thriving jobs in our community. Becca explains, “On average, 48% of each purchase at local independent businesses are recirculated locally, compared to less than 14% of chain stores.” On top of that, independent retailers invest three times more money back into our communities than chain stores. While there are dozens of amazing local shops to find the perfect gift this holiday season, there are also several markets and pop-up shops that feature a variety of products made by local businesses and artisans. These events not only feature locally sourced and crafted goods, but also a fun and festive atmosphere for the whole family. Below are some happening around Whatcom County. Many businesses will have special events or late hours this holiday season. Becca and the team at Sustainable Connections have also put together the ultimate Buy Local for the Holidays Shopping Guide, which focuses on retailers and home service providers. The shopping guide is organized with a fun twist this year—personalities. Shopping for that wilderness worshipper, or perhaps fashionista, in your life? Just look for that category and you’ll find all the local businesses that sell products for that type of personality. The shopping guide will be

out in December and local businesses will have the “Open and Local” sign on their windows, ready to greet you! While you’re shopping local this holiday season, don’t forget about our local restaurants, grocers, and food producers. Sustainable Connections encourages everyone to take the Eat Local First for the Holidays Pledge. Go online to eatlocalfirst.org now through December 31st and enter to win tasty prizes from such businesses as Pure Bliss Deserts, Community Food Co-op, and a ‘Where the Locals Go’ coupon book. The pledge gives you four options, so you can select any and all that work best for you. The website also gives you great resources for local food outlets and even recipes. In the words of Sustainable Connections, eating local is “fresher, tastier, and supports our friends and neighbors.” Whether you’re buying for yourself or a loved one, your choice on where to shop can make a big difference. So enjoy the season, marvel at our many local talents, and support community this holiday season by buying local!
