Skagit Valley Chorale’s 2015 Christmas Show Set in 1949 by Marla Bronstein Conductor Adam Burdick will present Skagit Valley Chorale’s Christmas performance in the setting of a 1940s radio show, using popular and classical arrangements originally performed by the famous bandleader Fred Waring and his Pennsylvanians. Waring was a popular musician, bandleader, and radio and television personality, (as well as the patent owner of the Waring Blender.) Generations grew up listening to Waring’s Christmas Magic. For this performance, Burdick leased the arrangements from his archived collection, housed at Penn State University, which includes more than five thousand compositions that were collected during Waring’s 60-year career. The show pairs the Chorale with a big band, using Waring’s original orchestrations. Enter Vince Fejeran, the conductor of the 50+-year-old Skagit Community Band. The versatile Fejeran is currently principal trombonist with the Skagit Symphony and is a member of Skagit’s A’Town Big Band. He freelances with different pick-up jazz groups, teaches K-8 at Immaculate Conception Regional School, and conducts a jazz ensemble and teaches music theory, music appreciation and jazz history at Skagit Valley College. In his free time, he

The musical numbers are woven together by the script, written and performed by Port Townsend native and radio announcer David Schroeder. Well-known 40s era commercials will be modified to showcase Skagit Valley history and local businesses, some of which, like Hugo Helmer, have been around since the 40s. Choir members are doubling as actors in the skits and commercials. Artifacts on display in the lobby include collections from the Skagit Valley Museum and Sedro Woolley Historical Museum. Items include old radios, vintage magazines, original 40s era sheet music, and the trunk that was custommade for transporting the Waring Blender used to mix drinks on the band’s tours. Performance dates are Friday, December 11, 7:30pm and Sunday, December 13, 2pm, in Mount Vernon at McIntyre Hall Performing Arts & Conference Center, 2501 East College Way. Tickets are $16 general/$14 seniors, students, Fred Waring and The Pennsylvanians, circa 1940s. Photo used with and veterans, and permission from Fred Waring’s America, Penn State University Archives. are on sale through the says, he does music. Magical Strings bring Warmth and Joy into the Heart of Winter by Deborah M. Bernard What do you get when an iconic Irish fiddle/dance/dulcimer group presents a Christmas concert in an historic theatre in Mount Vernon? You get that surreal feeling that the Ghost of Christmas Past is alive and well and you are fortunate enough to be in the audience. Magical Strings will perform its Celtic Yuletide concert on Sunday, Dec. 13, at 3pm at the Lincoln Theatre in Mount Vernon. Magical Strings is a multi-generational family troupe that has been performing for 37 years. Theatre director Roger Gietzen said, “They’ve been coming to the Lincoln for over 25 years, and I’ve been here for 16, so it’s been very enjoyable watching the younger generations grow up and become part of the performance.” They’ve often been compared to the Von Trapp Family Singers, yes, that family from The Sound of Music. Local historians know that when the Von Trapps fled Nazi Germany in 1942, they performed many times in Skagit County as they embraced their new life in America. Since the Lincoln Theatre was the main performing arts center during that era, it is probable that they did perform there. The Lincoln Theatre, 721 S. 1st St., Mount Vernon, has been “serving up fresh arts and entertainment to the Skagit Valley and beyond since 1926 ... the mission of the Lincoln Theatre is to entertain, inform and inspire our diverse community ... while preserving the historic Lincoln Theatre,” proclaims its web site. For many in the Northwest, it wouldn’t be the holidays without the harps,

dulcimers, and energetic Celtic sounds of the acclaimed family ensemble Magical Strings. Three generations of the Boulding family set the stage ablaze with the Tara Academy Irish Dancers, lively fiddling of Jocelyn Pettit, soulful songs with brilliant Dublin guitarist Colm MacCarthaigh, powerful vocals and singalongs led by Prescott Breeden, and dynamic percussionist Matt Jerrell. Philip and Pam’s Celtic harp and hammered dulcimer sing mysteries from their recent sojourn in Ireland, augmented by cello, violin, whistles, accordion and concertina. This festive gala of music, dance, storytelling, juggling, a colorful costumed processional, and songs of the season brings warmth and joy into the heart of winter. With dancing hammers and pulsating strings, Philip and Pam Boulding together create the distinctive music of Magical Strings, described by The Washington Post as “warm, graceful and sonically gorgeous.” Celtic harps and hammered dulcimers are colorfully augmented by pennywhistles, concertina, button

accordion, and storytelling. Since 1978, they have drawn a loyal following worldwide, who are captivated by the energetic arrangements of Celtic music and by the engaging compositions inspired by frequent journeys to Ireland and beyond. Magical Strings has performed on media networks around the country, including A Prairie Home Companion, NPR’s Weekend Edition, CNN both at home and in Europe, prime time TV in Japan, Performance Today worldwide and on Classic King FM. They placed first at the Grannard Bicentennial Harp Competition in Ireland, collaborated with Northwest ballet and theatre companies, and performed for Boris Yeltsin when he visited Seattle. They’ve recorded 20 albums on four different labels. The Bouldings run the School of Magical Strings, design and build instruments for an international clientele (over 3,000 built to date) and continue to host the annual Magic Hill Summer Harp Camp on their beautiful five-acre farm overlooking the Puget Sound. Philip and Pam love to share their music with children and have performed and taught in schools throughout the country. Their love of music is embraced by all five of their grown children and now their six grandchildren, who dance and perform with them at their annual Celtic Yuletide Concerts throughout Washington and Oregon. The show starts at 3pm, Sunday, Dec. 13, at the Lincoln Theatre in Mount Vernon. Tickets are available at www.lincolntheatre.org. Reserved seating tickets are $26/$23/$20/$17 plus applicable fees. Seniors, students and children receive $2 off ticket prices, and Lincoln Theatre members receive an additional $2 off.

Celebrated Superstar LeAnn Rimes Paired to Perform with New Female Musical Prodigy LeAnn Rimes kicked off her career two decades ago, when she became the youngest Grammy recipient in the award’s history and began charting her way to 42 million album sales and numerous additional awards. She was a driven young musician then, and she continues to inspire audiences with her heartfelt vocals and original arrangements today. Local audiences will have the rare opportunity to experience LeAnn’s earnest warmth live when her Today is Christmas tour comes to the Mount Baker Theatre on Saturday, December 5. The evening is in part a celebration of LeAnn’s new holiday album, which includes original arrangements of Yuletide classics. The album also features a few new favorites, such as a new version of the Kenny Loggins hit “Celebrate Me Home,” and a duet with pop star Gavin McGraw that was recorded especially with American heroes in mind. Accompanying LeAnn on her tour is supporting artist Ellee Duke. Reminiscent of LeAnn’s early talent, Ellee is a prolific singer-songwriter and guitar phenom with her debut album on the way. The nineteen-year-old traveled back and forth from Utah to Nashville to collaborate with veteran writers when she was still in high school, and she even turned down a coveted spot on American Idol to pursue a self-driven career delivering musical stories about love and life. Today is Christmas brings these two gifted female artists to the same stage in a celebration of the holiday spirit. LeAnn is passionate about sharing her original Christmas arrangements, saying “I am looking forward to making more holiday memories with my fans this year.” Tickets for the December 5, 7:30pm show start at $39 and can be purchased at the Mount Baker Theatre Ticket Office or online at www.MountBakerTheatre.com. Last year, more than 3 million actions were generated worldwide, and three of the cases were released, including Moses Akatuba, who was pardoned from death row in Nigeria. Britain’s National Theatre Live in Bellingham and Mount Vernon by Joanna Nesbit In 2009, London’s National Theatre Live series was launched to broadcast live performances of Britain’s best live theatre productions around the world for millions of people to view. Since then, some 20 performances from London’s National Theatre and, on occasion, other theatres in England, have been enjoyed by 3.5 million audience members in more than 1,100 theatres world-wide, including here in Whatcom and Skagit Counties. You can catch these top-shelf performances at the Lincoln Theatre (712 S. 1st St., Mount Vernon) and at the Pickford Film Center (1318 Bay St., Bellingham). With the 7-hour time difference between here and London, it’s difficult to broadcast in real time, so the local theatres record shows to broadcast them in the evening, and sometimes host a second showing as a Sunday matinee. In London, each play is filmed in front of a live theatre audience, with cameras positioned around the theatre to capture all angles and give film viewers the “best seat in the house” perspective. Cameras are placed differently for every show to ensure the best experience for viewers. “We’ve been showing NTL plays for about six years, and it’s my favorite series,” says Roger Gietzen, Director of

The Nutcracker… A Christmas Tradition by Deborah M. Bernard Christmas traditions resonate in our hearts and increase our holiday joy. The Nutcracker, the most beloved Christmas ballet of all times, made its debut a week before Christmas, 1892, at the Imperial Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, Russia. Generations have enjoyed the classic Christmas ballet. But residents of Whatcom and Skagit Counties do not have to brave the Seattle traffic to enjoy an incredible evening with The Nutcracker, thanks to the Bellinghambased Northwest Ballet Theater. John Bishop is the artistic director of the ballet company, now in its 17th year. And this is the 10th year that NBT will perform The Nutcracker at The Mount Baker Theatre. As always, John Bishop’s Nutcracker is the original version, as first presented to the world in 1892. “But it wasn’t always that way in Seattle. For 30 years Pacific Northwest Ballet performed the Maurice Sendak (Where the Wild Things Are) version choreographed by Kent Stowell, which was quite different than the original. This year they are changing to George Balanchine’s version that is closer to the Mariinsky version. Sendak’s was fun, don’t get me wrong, but it’s nice to see the original,” says Bishop. Bishop has danced in 20 major dance companies. He remembers dancing 35 days straight every Christmas season, performing The Nutcracker. He embraces the ballet tradition. “Classical ballet is the best road for any dancer,” Bishop says. “It’s the foundation for everything in dance. It creates artists for the future, not a jack-of-all-trades, but a classically trained dancer.” Bishop has taken two groups of students to the Kirov School of Ballet in St. Petersburg for training, to learn the grassroots of ballet, the proud tradition of the Vaganova Academy of Russian Ballet, the Bolshoi, and the New York City Ballet. “Ballet is the road less travelled,” Bishop says. “People are skipping the

36

basics and going straight into jazz, or hip hop, without learning the classical steps, which you can only receive from a comprehensive ballet program like ours.” “But, classical ballet is making a comeback. Here in Whatcom County, there is a ballet revival going on, and it’s now including young men,” Bishop says. “In Bellingham, there is a huge arts appreciation community. We are so happy that we can present this family tradition with ever-increasing excellence.” This year’s Nutcracker features two male leads, “split casting The Nutcracker, which is a very demanding role,” Bishop says. Henry Winslow, 17, BHS student, and Evyn Bartlett and James Innes, both 19 and both WWU students, will all dance in this year’s production. Hailey Forsberg, also 19, has danced in NBT productions for 10 years and dances the lead role of Clara for the first time this season. “We have four lead male dancers this year. All were accepted into the Summer Dance Lab in Walla Walla for the past two years. Our new roster of male dancers is technically strong. They take a partnering class every Wednesday in our large studio with our 16 company girls. It is quite an exciting class, and believe me, you won’t find anything like this around here. It is almost impossible to find that many male dancers in one place anywhere. It is awesome that we have not only serious young women, but also serious young men,” says Bishop. NBT will perform The Nutcracker at Blaine PAC, Dec. 5 at 7:30pm and Dec. 6

Call 360-416-7727 or visit mcintyrehall.org for tickets. “We appeal to audiences of all ages. Older audiences are coming more and more, remembering seeing these same steps and this exact choreography when they were children,” says Bishop. Continue the tradition or start your own family tradition, watching Northwest Ballet Theater present The Nutcracker this year. And come back next year for the rest of NBT’s season that will bring Northwest Dance Festival in March and Alice in Wonderland, an original fulllength ballet that will premiere in May. Season tickets for all three productions can still be purchased at both Mount Baker Theatre and McIntyre Hall.
