Modern Tradition.

by Marla Bronstein For the third Labor Day weekend in a row, Ferndale’s Hovander Park will be the site of the Hovander Homestead Bluegrass Festival. Produced in partnership with the Whatcom County Parks and Recreation Department, Whatcom Parks and Recreation Foundation and 5 Starr Jam, in three quick years, the festival has solidly established itself in the bluegrass community. Musicians from around the western United States and Canada will be gracing two stages. Lovers of traditional bluegrass style will enjoy the music, a variety of workshops, delicious food, and a sense of community. Both old and new fans of this genre will be happy to know that this year the festival will have some long-time favorites in attendance. Members of the Main Stage bands will lead more than two-dozen workshops on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Laurie Lewis and the Right Hands will be in attendance this year. Attendees of her workshop will witness the process of arranging a song. The band will receive a

Sherrie Kahn and Her Musical Versatility by Margaret Bikman Sherrie Kahn and her husband, Dr. Mitch Kahn, moved to Bellingham in 2006 from New York City, and soon became immersed in our area’s music community. Mitch founded Skagit Opera, now Pacific Northwest Opera, with performances at Skagit Valley College’s McIntyre Hall in Mount Vernon, and of course, Sherrie is involved with those productions. The couple received the Bellingham’s Mayor’s Arts Award in 2018. Sherrie, a soprano, is hard at work for her own performances with Bellingham Music Club and Whatcom Chorale. On Sept. 6, 7:30pm at First Congregational Church, 2401 Cornwall Ave., Bellingham, she’ll sing with some women from Whatcom Chorale to open the BMC’s 2018-2019 season. The program, called “Grand Tour of Europe,” will be a mix of “fun, fun, fun,” she says, and “misty-eye” music. The Club’s Wednesday morning concerts start at 10:30am at Trinity Lutheran Church, 119 Texas St., and the Thursday Night Beat concerts are at 7:30pm at First Congregational Church, September through June. (The exception to the Night Beat lineup is “Hark, The Herald Headlines Sing!” a production by Scott Henderson and Martin Bray, Oct. 4-6, Sherrie Kahn. Photo at the Firehouse Arts and Events Center, 1314 Harris Ave.) courtesy of David Scherrer. Other highlights for the Club include flautist and Hollywood recording artist Sheridon Stokes in November, and works by Leonard Bernstein, played by pianists Elizabeth and Marcel Bergmann, in December. On Oct. 20, Sherrie opens the Skagit Symphony season singing Berlioz’s “Les Nuits D’Ete” under the baton of Bobby Collins, one of this season’s guest conductors. She’ll also work with Whatcom Chorale artistic director and conductor Deborah Brown, to develop future seasons. In December, as part of the Chorale’s “Anchored in the Classics, Focused on the Future” initiative, the choir performs a new composition by Henry From, “Winter Solstice.” In March, organist Wade Dingman performs with the Chorale in a new choral work, “Heart Mountain Suite,” by award-winning composer Sarah Mattox, based on the journals of Japanese internee Kara Kondo and featuring the granddaughter of one of the internees as mezzo-soprano soloist. For more about Sherrie (and Mitch), search YouTube for Bellingham Mayor’s Arts Awards Sherrie and Mitchell Kahn. Celebrating Music in the Roots Tradition Petunia.

Meghan Yates.

by Deborah M. Bernard The 18th Annual Subdued Stringband Jamboree is happening August 9-11 at the Deming Log Show Grounds. So pack up the babies, and grab the old ladies, and everyone goes! (Because everyone knows.) It’s Brother Love’s Show! (No kidding: Kids 14 and under are free with an adult. Adults 80 and over are free with a child.) Robert Sarazin Blake and his brother and sister musicians founded this celebration of music. Blake says, “The jamboree is about celebrating music in the roots tradition. We aim to bring together the best of the old and the new, including singer/songwriters, old time, bluegrass, klezmer, honky-tonk, Gypsy jazz, country swing, and Irish music ... The Subdued Stringband Jamboree is the annual party for Bellingham musicians and music lovers. Everyone is invited. There will be three nights, two long days, and for the first time, a Sunday morning full of tunes and songs.

This year the theme is “Pass the Luker Duker.” Amidst the usual cacophony of bands on stage, campground jamming, workshops and kids with wagons, we’ll be celebrating the spirit of our friend and frequent Jamboree performer Lucas Hicks,” Blake said. Lucas Hicks died of cancer last October at the age of 39. He was a beloved Bellingham musician, composer and multi-instrumentalist. At least three-dozen groups will perform during the Jamboree. There will be lots of hands-on music events for the kids. The Jamboree is so kid-friendly that is feels like a family reunion. Especially if your family played at Woodstock or are people who live and love music. “We now have a campground full of tents, guitars, coolers, and banjos, surrounding the stages and creating three days and nights of picking, singing, and stomping,” Blake said. Sponsors include almost every community-minded establishment in

Skagit Woodstock - Music, Fun & Classic Cars for Charity by Justin Hawkinson Edgewater Park in Mount Vernon will be bursting with excitement on Saturday, August 18 for The 9th Annual Skagit Woodstock & Rockin’ Car Show. Planners expect more than a thousand people to enjoy the festival of live music near the Skagit River as well as an extensive show of classic and modern motorcycles and cars. With food trucks, craft/art vendors and a beer garden, the party will keep going into the night on the shores of the Skagit River. Entry to the grounds costs $10, which will benefit The Cancer Patient Assistance Fund. This fund is administered directly to cancer patients and their families at multiple Skagit & Island county hospitals. The CPAF and the cause of helping cancer patients is close to the hearts of organizers Dave Clark & Reed Harlow. “This (charity) benefits our community,” said Clark. “We walk past people affected by cancer every day, and this fund goes to the patients when they need it most.” Past events have raised around $10,000 that can be used to offset lost income, pay deductibles, or help with extra expenses during treatment. Gates to the car show will open at 11am, and ticket-holders can wander through the rows of restored and customized cars and motorcycles until 4pm. The food trucks, beer garden, and vending booths will surround the festival’s star attraction, the Skagit Woodstock stage. Four bands rooted in the Pacific Northwest bring an appreciation for the rock hits of the 70s, 80s, 90s and beyond. The hard-hitting quartet Never Kry will take the stage at 2pm with influences from 80s arena rock as well as the Seattle grunge scene. High Voltage gets the spotlight at 4pm with covers from bands like AC/DC, Journey, and The Beatles. At 6pm, Mama Dirty Skirt will play their unique mixture of rock, funk, Motown and more. The entertainment closes with the hard rocking Mount Vernon trio Stereo Bones from 8:30-10pm. More information can be found at www.facebook.com/Skagit-Woodstock.

On August 3-5, the Anacortes Arts Festival will bring the celebration to the next level with a massive 10-block art and music extravaganza. Thanks to some generous sponsors there is no charge to walk through the galleries, enjoy live music on three stages, and peruse the 250 booths of local artisans selling their creations. The Youth Discovery Area will have activities for children and The Art Dash, a USATF certified half marathon/10k/5k, will be run along the waterfront Saturday morning. The live music will be hard to miss with three stages around the area. The Main Stage will feature lively acts in country, pop, Americana and world music. The Jazz Stage is dedicated to jazz, swing and blues, while the Port Stage will offer an eclectic mix of acts from several genres. Each day four or five bands will play ninety-minute sets at each stage. Detailed schedules of bands, gallery hours, and other information can be found online at: anacortesartsfestival.com. This festival attracts competitors of every level showcasing their talents and craftsmanship. The Juried Exhibition opens with a free evening reception July 28 at the Port Transit Shed, and will be open daily July 30-August 5. The theme “Essence” was chosen, and 70 regional artists have embodied that concept in both 2D & 3D media. Renowned American curator Michael Monroe will jury the pieces and award up to $12,500 in prize money. Other galleries for the festival weekend include The Allen Family Focus Gallery, with a separate show called Animalia. An Emerging Artist Exhibition gallery will provide some talented high school artists a chance to show their works and experience the professional artistic process. NWTRC’s 25th Anniversary by Osa Hale Nestled in the hills and fields of Whatcom County, there is a piece of land that is home to something really special. Just down Kelly Road, you’ll find gentle, wellbehaved horses and eager volunteers who are as skillful as they are compassionate. Together, they make a riding center that has been bringing equine therapy to people with disabilities for 25 years. The NorthWest Therapeutic Riding Center (NWTRC) helps people with a wide range of disabilities. Over the years, NWTRC has worked with participants from ages 4 to 74, offering each person a uniquely empowering experience. Horses are fantastic creatures to involve in therapeutic activities, because participants can interact with them on many levels. They can practice grooming and horsemanship, which in turn gives them a chance to work on balance, physical health, and communication, among other skills. NWTRC is known for “Giving a leg up to people of all abilities.” That leg up can be literal, or figurative. Riding the horses imitates a person’s gait, which can improve flexibility and muscle strength in participants with physical disabilities. Interacting with the horses is also very rewarding for people with cognitive and emotional disabilities, helping them take very real steps toward mental wellness. In the 25 years that NWTRC has been operating, it has done even more than offer empowering therapies to people living with disabilities; it has also enriched the lives of countless volunteers. Community members help out with the participants, and in return, they get to know interesting people, learn horse-handling skills, and get excited about creative means of therapy. Many volunteers use their experience with people of all abilities to pursue therapeutic educational programs and careers. Anybody who is interested in supporting the fantastic work being done by NWTRC can visit their website at www.nwtrc.org for information about volunteer opportunities and fundraising events.

Entertainment News Northwest ~ August 2018

by Osa Hale Just like campfires, sweet corn on the cob, fireworks, and days spent swimming in the lake or river, county fairs are a vital part of the quintessential Washington summer. In Northwest Washington, the abundance of agriculture and fun-loving folks means that there are two different fairs this August. The Skagit County Fair runs from August 8-11 in Mount Vernon, and the Northwest Washington Fair is on from August 13-18 in Lynden. Both fairs have live entertainment, livestock & farming events, and a carnival element. Both of the fairs have a considerable live music element as well as a myriad of other entertaining productions. At the Skagit County Fair, there is a diverse mix of performances. Live music ranging across country, rock, blues, and Latino artists is played on the Arena, Community, and Main Stages. Also onstage and in the arena, visitors can find comedy, magic and hypnosis shows, and cheerleading routines. “All-ages entertainment” gets the treatment in the local baby-racing favorite known as the “Diaper Derby.” Around the fairgrounds, interested bystanders can also watch the uniquely talented Wenatchee Youth Circus perform, keep score at the pie-eating contest, meet movie characters, learn about birds at the Sardis Raptor Display, or gawk at the wild antics of ‘X-treme Air Dogs.’ At the Northwest Washington Fair, the actionpacked events all take place in the Grandstand. This includes demolition derbies, live music and comedy, and Lynden Rodeo events. Performers will include Bret Michaels of Poison fame, Canadian country music duo High Valley, and blue-collar comedian and musician Jeff Foxworthy. The Lynden Rodeo is an entire event unto itself, unfolding in the arms of the county fair. With professional roughstock and timed events, teen competitions, and even a kid-focused “Mutton Buster” competition, the Lynden Rodeo is truly an all-American experience. The fair also has an extensive array of art, crafts, and collections on display. Visitors can see quilts, photography, flowers, Lego creations, and more products

of the creative minds of Washington State. The Skagit County Fair has a youth livestock auction, shining a spotlight on the future farmers of the county. Students learn animal husbandry, veterinary medicine, economics, business and marketing, in the field and at the fair, as they exhibit and sell their animals. There will also be a petting zoo at the fair, as well as farm animals sprinkled throughout the fairgrounds in different barns and outbuildings. One of the cornerstones of the Northwest Washington Fair is agricultural education. If it’s grown locally, you can probably find it at the fair: fresh, canned, and baked. There is also a strong livestock presence, with 4H, FFA, and open class exhibits happening daily. Interested fair-goers are treated to horse shows, animal contests, livestock showcases, and an awardwinning small animal experience. Carnival rides are an attraction at both the Skagit County Fair and the Northwest Washington Fair. They’ve got bumper cars, carousels, carnival games, ferris wheels, heart-racing rides like the Octopus and the Zipper... just to name a few. Plus, there are curly fries and giant sodas to wash it all down. Tickets to each of the fairs can be purchased at the gate. Entrance prices range from $5-$13 per person, with discounts for family groups and free entrance for children under the age of 5. Extra activities, like the rodeo and the carnival, have additional tickets and fees once inside the fair.
