Spring Is Nature’s Way of Saying, “Let’s Party!” McIntyre Hall’s April Shows Will Get Your Party Started! by Deborah M. Bernard Winter has released its grip on the Pacific Northwest. Flowers are springing forth. “Spring is nature’s way of saying, ‘Let’s party!’” said Robin Williams, and boy, does McIntyre Hall in Mount Vernon have the perfect shows to help you celebrate April! Pacific Northwest Opera presents Turandot Fridays, April 6 and 13 at 7:30pm Sundays, April 8 and 15 at 3pm Reserved Seating: $25-$65 Pacific Northwest Opera presents Turandot, based on an ancient Chinese tale, an epic masterpiece of revenge, power and love. The vengeful princess Turandot has decreed that she will marry only a royal suitor who can answer her three riddles and those that fail will lose their heads — and many have. The tartar prince Calaf, filled with the fire of heroes and bewitched by her beauty, is determined to try — and succeeds but not without tragedy. Giacomo Puccini’s final opera is filled with passion and soaring melodies. Sung in original Italian with English supertitles. Black Umfolosi Saturday, April 14 at 7:30pm Reserved Seating: $25 / Box Seats $35 Black Umfolosi were formed in 1982 by school friends in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, who named themselves after the Umfolosi Omnyama River in South Africa — to where their ancestors can be traced. Hop on the train with Choo Choo Soul’s Genevieve Goings (singer) and Constantine “DC” Abramson (dancer and beat boxer)!

from the mind of a Silicon Valley video game developer, Choo Choo Soul began as a hip-hop/soul children’s album of music that “won’t drive parents crazy.” It encourages young viewers to get up and dance to their funky, urban sound. The live incarnation of Choo Choo Soul finds Genevieve, the soulful & hip singing train conductor, and DC, the beatboxing, breakdancing engineer on stage engaging children in sing-alongs, dance routines and lots of crowd participation as they perform the hits as seen on Disney Junior. What’s Up magazine hails London-born Adrian Legg as “the greatest British import since Newcastle Brown Ale.”

Renowned and awarded for his unique amalgamation of acoustic and electric guitar and how he blends diverse musical styles and inspirations into a distinctive sound all his own, Legg has been hailed as “one of the wizards” of the guitar (Philadelphia Enquirer). In addition to his distinguished career as a live performer, recording artist and composer, he is an innovator in guitar design and amplification technology, an instructor, photographer, writer and author, witty and engaging onstage storyteller, and an at large commentator for National Public Radio’s All Things Considered, among other gifts, pursuits and interests. Hence, it’s no wonder that What’s Up magazine hails London-born Legg as “the greatest British import since Newcastle Brown Ale.” Disney’s Choo Choo Soul With Genevieve! Oh! All Those Saxophones! Jazz Celebration X will take place on Sunday, May 20 at 3pm at the First Baptist Church at 110 Flora St. in Bellingham. The annual Jazz Celebration concert this year will mark its tenth year of showcasing the music of local musician Bob Storms, who writes new music every year for the event. There won’t be any songs that you know because that’s the unique thing about this concert. It’s all new music! Also, the show features the talented jazz musicians in Whatcom County playing Bob’s tunes and songs. The Jazz Celebration concert series began in 2009 and was to be a single celebration concert. The reason for the celebration was that Bob’s collection of songs (“Tunes From Toneville”) had reached a goal. He had five hundred songs in copyright in 2009 and wished to share his music with our community, so he put on a concert featuring twenty-five of his songs played by five different jazz bands. The concert received a standing ovation and the audience wanted more, so the Jazz Celebration series was born. At this time, Bob has logged in over 1200 tunes and songs in copyright protection. This year, Paul Sorensen’s Big Band will be the featured jazz group. And since Paul is a composer too, he will be performing his music as well. Paul is well known in and around Bellingham both as a bandleader and tenor saxophone artist. Paul graduated from Bellingham High School and Western Washington University, although it was called Western Washington State College of Education in 1960. Mary Michaelson sings with the Bellingham Dixieland All Stars, and Bob’s daughters are the vocal quartet “The Gales”. Paul’s band will open the show. Other acts to follow are the Bellingham Dixieland All Stars, Ragtime piano music, Bob’s family band “Stormy Sea and the Gales” and finally, a whole lot of saxophones! It will be a Sax-O-Rama. There will be more saxophones than you have ever seen in one place. It’s going to be a rare “photo op.” The saxophone players range in age from those in their teens to some in their eighties. The music is jazz, the music is all new, and you are invited to come to the show to see and hear the talent in our county. If you haven’t been to a Jazz Celebration concert, be sure to come and see what others have found so valuable that they would never miss it. The $15 tickets will be available at the door. Also, if you have a saxophone and wish to play in the concert contact Bob via his website at stormsmusicservices.com.

Volunteering Is a Good-for-All Habit by Marla Bronstein

2018 National Volunteer Week (NVW) runs from April 15 through the 21st—Tax day through Earth Day. NVW was first established in 1974 to recognize and thank volunteers who lend time, talent, voice, and support to causes in their community and around the world. The Volunteer Center of Whatcom County (VCWC) has been proudly serving the county and its residents since 1972, initially as Congress’ Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP). In 2016, the VCWC became a program of the Opportunity Council. Summer Star, the VCWC Volunteer and Event Coordinator, considers her organization to be a kind of matchmaker. New volunteers should give careful thought to defining their personal interests. Consider how and where you want to impact the community, and how much time you are willing to spend each week. There are volunteer opportunities with non-profits, social service agencies, businesses and in private homes. Some are inside, others are outside near water or inland. They have even had a call for volunteers to pet kittens. Their most popular programs are The Volunteer Chore Program, which helps seniors and adults with functional disabilities remain independent in their homes, and Maple Alley Inn, where three healthy meals are served each week to Whatcom County residents experiencing hunger. Whatcom County is home to a very active volunteer community. In 2017, VCWC volunteers tracked more than 18 thousand hours of volunteer time by just under one thousand volunteers for a value of more than one half of a million dollars. VCWC also holds monthly brown-bag lunch meetings to talk about issues related to volunteering. They are located at 1419 Cornwall Avenue, and their phone number is 360-734-5121. Check the VCWC website for different ways to get involved throughout the county: www.whatcomvolunteer.org. Photos courtesy of the Whatcom County Volunteer Center.

Bellingham Film, Script to Screen by Osa Hale Film is one of the most powerful mediums we have to share stories. There are as many stories to be told as there are people, and increasing access to the world of filmmaking is an important way to amplify the voices of diverse creators. Bellingham Film does exactly that, working to strengthen the community, educate beginning filmmakers, and uplift local talent. One of the programs that Bellingham Film uses to empower folks to make movies is Script to Screen. Script to Screen creates a months-long educational experience. Aspiring filmmakers learn by doing, as they make a movie with experienced professionals. The process began in September of last year with creators submitting pitches that were judged on story, producibility, commerciality, and educational value of the production. Five submissions were selected, and the creators worked with Script to Screen executives Joshua Krenz and Mike Petryni to develop their pitches into outlines. From those five, three participants were chosen to move on, writing their outlines into screenplays with the help of their peers and monthly Script Studio sessions at Bellingham Film. Finally, in November,

interviewed for the roles of producers, director, cinematographer, production & sound designers, and editor. Aside from documentarian Loree Boyd, who worked on the film as a producer, all of the people chosen for these roles had no prior film experience.

one script was selected for production: Jerry Wade’s The Demon Cost. The Demon Cost is about two lifelong friends who are both Vietnam veterans. Their lives go in different directions after their time in the war; while the protagonist is struggling with trauma, his friend moves on with his life easily. The film explores that difference and the conflict it causes. Wade drew from his own experiences during and after the Vietnam War to create a strong and timely story. Bringing Wade’s script to life was the next step. More participants were

“Script to Screen is about creating access,” Krenz explained. “These individuals demonstrated traits we felt would create a successful team, and we were largely right.” The crew held regular meetings, where the Script to Screen executives and local film-making professionals served as mentors and helped to guide the process as they brought The Demon Cost to life. Hand Crank Films gave the team access to their equipment, so they had professional gear to work with. After months of education, revision, rehearsals, and coordination, the crew filmed over the course of three days in February. This filming process was a chance for the brand-new filmmakers to really shine. Krenz said the participants did an impressive job of transferring skills from outside of the film world to the production and applying all the things they’d learned over the past several months. “I was blown away by how everything came together. for failure, but the team’s communication and passion really drove this project,” Krenz said. “Everyone was there to learn, and as long as we stayed focused on the final product, we could solve anything.” The film is currently in post-production, and will premier in May. Bellingham Film will have information about the screening of The Demon Cost on their website and Facebook page. Any filmmakers who are interested in learning more and connecting with other creators can take advantage of the hub that is Bellingham Film. They offer networking mixers, educational seminars, special screenings, and guest lectures from film professionals. The Script Studio, which was featuring the Script to Screen process, is held the final Wednesday of every month at the Mount Baker Theatre’s Encore Room; it’s free to attend and open to anyone who wants to learn more about screenwriting.

comedies for the Mutual Film Corporation. For Mutual, Chaplin produced what many film historians believe to be his best works in which his Tramp character evolved from a slapstick-driven character to a threedimensional, complex individual filled with humor, pathos and humanity. These comedies lay the groundwork for his feature film masterpieces. Chaplin’s Mutual period, which he would describe as “the happiest time of my career,” was one in which he flourished with complete creative control over his projects. Film historian Ephraim Katz wrote: “Chaplin proved himself an inimitable pantomimist capable of moving his audiences from laughter to tears with a subtle gesture or a bold sweep of movement, as graceful as a ballet dancer.” The San Francisco Chronicle has called Dennis James “A National Treasure.” His authentic live film accompaniment and insights on film history are truly magical. bygone era of vaudeville. Tickets ($5.50 - $15.50) are available at 360-734-6080 or www.MountBakerTheatre.com. This show is made possible by the support of local businesses Threshold Documents and Saturna Capital.

Chuckanut Radio Hour – Join us for

this very special dual-guest Radio Hour on Wed., April 11 at 7pm in the WCC Heiner Theater! We are thrilled to welcome Willy Vlautin and Jonathon Evison, two talented PNW writers to the stage of the Heiner Theater. Each has a brand-new novel, and they will discuss them in an “in conversation” style interview. These two novels are great compliments to one another, and the authors (who also happen to be long-time friends) are such great entertainers in their own right, that we can’t wait to listen in on their conversation! Each Chuckanut Radio Hour includes guest authors, musicians, performance poet Kevin Murphy, and episodes of “As the Ham Turns” serial radio comedy, not to mention groaner jokes by hosts Paul Hanson and Kelly Evert, and announcer Rich Donnelly. And by the way, Willy Vlautin will also be our musical guest for the evening, performing pieces from the soundtrack that he composed to accompany his novel. Admission is $5. 16th Annual Dirty Dan Harris Festival – April 22 is the day to celebrate

the “unscrubbed” community founder of Fairhaven, Dirty Dan Harris! There will be loads of fun to be had from 10am-5pm! The Dan Harris Challenge is a race for rowers and paddlers of all types, inspired by Dan Harris’ cross-border rum-rowing adventures. Enjoy live music, great food, a Sidewalk Saloon, and the legendary Dirty Dan look-a-like and 1800s dress contests. Don’t miss the Chuckanut Chili Cook-Off, the Bellingham Steampunk Society information booth, face painting, the Peoples Bank fish toss, and the Rocket Donuts donut-eating contest.
