Burnsini has been producing delicious and unique red wines from its estate vineyard high on a Cottonwood bluff for more than 21 years. They are committed to offering customers a local wine they can be proud to pour. From their grapes to your glass, the small but nimble team does it all. Owner and winemaker Brandi Greene led the charge, converting the production to fully organic in the vineyard and winery. Her experience and education in winemaking have allowed her to steadily grow Burnsini during her tenure, including a second tasting location inside Enjoy the Store in downtown Redding and adding to sustainability efforts every year while continuing to

“It was a bit serendipitous,” James Mazzotta says. “By the sixth or seventh issue of Enjoy Magazine, we were getting calls about where and how people could find the local products we’d written about.”

Organically, Enjoy Magazine spawned Enjoy the Store.

“It seemed like a perfect transition to have a place where you could actually see and touch the things we wrote about. A brick and mortar shop to come alongside Enjoy Magazine,” says Mazzotta.

And thus Enjoy the Store came to be. •

Redding’s Cascade Theatre has shown that the arts matter. While the world dealt with the COVID pandemic and many things in our normal lives changed, live music and theater all but stopped. The iconic neon marquee of the Cascade Theatre had no new acts or performances.

“There is no doubt that the COVID-19 outbreak was detrimental to the arts in many ways,” theater management

writes. “Every patron that attends a show, whether it be a concert, musical or any other live event, is directly contributing to the redevelopment of the arts community. Both Cascade Theatre staff and its patrons proved that art could rejoice and overcome - that is a huge achievement.”•

It’s Redding’s own time machine. The Behrens-Eaton House Museum is a trip back to a simpler and more elegant time where you can explore and learn about part of Redding’s history while enjoying the grounds’ spectacular gardens.

The home museum is open for touring from 10 am to 4 pm on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and from 1 to 4 pm on Saturdays.  Judge Richard Behrens Eaton left this 19th century house as a living monument to his ancestors’ time in Shasta County.  •

Let’s face it, the North State is a great place to work up a sweat – and we don’t mean because of the more-than-hot summers. No, the area we know and love is a great place to work out, whether that takes you out into the mountains, along the many miles of trails ribboning Redding and beyond, or hitting a gym, yoga or fitness club.

The most accessible and cheapest way to stay fit, of course, is out in nature, and the North State has it in spades. Runners can grind along trails near and far, from paved roads to dirt tracks and everything in between. A few of the more established routes have to include the Sacramento River Trail around the Sundial Bridge and leading to the Diestelhorst Bridge and ribbon bridge near the Keswick Dam. After all, running across a world-recognized landmark makes the miles go down a little easier.

There are also great trails at Lema Ranch on the east side of town as well as the Clover Creek Preserve. SWEAT Running Club, the one that helps put on the annual Turkey Trot, has been promoting running in the community since 1975 and has hosted more than 200 events. A fun-loving group which gathers to race, train and host fun runs throughout the year also is active in raising money for scholarships for local high school seniors who participate in prep athletics and plan to continue while in college. The same trails, paths and roads that are open to runners are also a great place for those who prefer a slower pace. Walking trails are dotted day and night with folks out enjoying the sunshine, walking the dog or just looking to stay active.

Whether you’re moving fast or slow, the road to fitness is also shared by the bikers – from road bikes to mountain bikes. The Shasta Wheelmen is open to those 18 and older with a small membership fee. The Wheelmen ride together on scheduled sojourns throughout the North State, promoting safe riding and the love of two wheels. Find them at www.shastawheelmen.org.

If you want to get off the road and find some sick single-track away from the concrete jungle, the area is home to hundreds of miles of mountain biking trails for beginner and expert alike. Redding is on the map as a destination for mountain biking, and the Redding Trail Alliance and the Redding Mountain Biking Club are great resources to find the perfect place to ride.

The Redding Trail Alliance has been around for nearly seven years and its mission is to “create high quality trail experiences but advocating for building and maintaining trails which are progressive, diverse, and promote community. The Redding Mountain Biking Club – www.mtbproject.com – has a great trove of trails to explore before you ride.

If getting away from it all on foot is more your speed, you’re in luck because there are so many trails around Redding and surrounding communities that you could probably not do the same hike twice in a year. Visit Redding has a great list of hiking trails, and among the faves have to be Chemise Peak, which rises with 360-degree views of the North State and Shasta Dam, as well as many of the waterfall trails at Whiskeytown National Recreation Area.

For those who want to hit the gym before or after work to stay fit for a more aggressive workout on the weekends, there are fitness centers, gyms, barre studios, yoga centers and Pilates studios for anyone. The Shasta Family YMCA is perhaps the biggest gym in the region and offers an array of amenities from two swim pools, to basketball to weights and a variety of classes.

But whatever you like to do to stay fit, one thing’s for certain – you can find it in the North State. Now, go work out.

You don’t have to look hard to find a whole bunch of winter fun in the North State. From skiing to snowshoeing to ice skating and sledding, it’s a frosty paradise in and around the Redding area.

The biggest winter draw, of course, is the Mt. Shasta Ski Park. An hour’s drive from Redding, the Ski Park offers more than 600 skiable acres with a base elevation of 5,500 feet. There are 38 trails on four lifts, including the brand-new Gray Butte lift, with the longest run clocking in at more than two miles long. There are three triple chair lifts, one quad and two surface lifts at the Ski Park, which sees more than 160,000 annual visitors.

From beginner to expert, Mt. Shasta Ski Park caters to every level of skier and snowboarder. And with more than 275 inches of snowfall annually and reasonable annual pass deals, it’s a perfect alternative to trekking to a Lake Tahoe resort.

Speaking of snowboarding, Mt Shasta Ski Park offers two terrain parks –Silvertip, focused on the beginner to intermediate, and Revolution, which is geared toward intermediate to advanced boarders. If you prefer to create your own power on skis, the Mt. Shasta Nordic Center has you covered. Located off the road to the Mt. Shasta Ski Park, cross country skiers can access more than 14 miles of trails on the base of Mt. Shasta. Their hours are listed on their website, www.mtshastanordic. org, where you can also buy passes.

For a faster-paced adventure, Fun Factory Rentals offers snowmobile rentals and access to more than 300 miles of groomed trails surrounding Mt. Shasta. Located off Highway 97, they operate out of the Deer Mountain Chuck Best Memorial Snowmobile Park and offer one- and two-person rentals from one hour all the way to a 24-hour rental. They go over the basics and safety training, but the rentals are unguided and open to the whole family. Visit www.funfactoryrentals.com.

A great group outing or date night can be had at the Siskiyou Ice Rink in Mount Shasta’s Shastice Park. The 85-foot-by-200-foot rink is open seven days a week through Feb. 12 with public skate times during the weekdays and evenings on the weekend. And whether you’re looking for adventure, out to impress a date or just looking for a fun, chilly way to chill, ice skating is a great way to get out in the winter. If ice skating is too slippery for you, perhaps snowshoeing would be a better fit. There are tons of places to enjoy that activity, from ranger-led snowshoe walks at Lassen Volcanic Park to strapping on a pair and finding your own adventure at places like Heart Lake near Lake Siskiyou.

The Lassen hikes are offered in the Southwest Area, the Kohm Yah-mah-nee Visitor Center entrance off Highway 36, from January through March for visitors 8 and older. Of course, you can also head out on your own near Manzanita Lake off Highway 44. The park doesn’t offer snowshoe rentals, but you can pick up a pair at places like Sports Ltd and Hermit’s Hut in Redding or in Mount Shasta. You can also snowshoe at the Mt. Shasta Nordic Center.

Close to Mt. Shasta Ski Park is Snowman’s Hill, a dedicated place for sledding that’s fun for the whole family. Near the Manzanita Lake entrance to Lassen is Eskimo Hill. Both offer sledding runs for you to seek either your version of Olympic gold-medal luge runs or just a leisurely jaunt down the snow – your choice.

Making a day of a trip to either Snowman’s Hill or Eskimo Hill is one of the best ways to spend a crisp, winter day as many families bring wood for a fire pit, food and, yes, even S’mores.

The best thing about living in the North State is that no matter the season there’s always an outdoor adventure awaiting.

But springtime may top all the others.

The weather is delightful, the rivers and creeks are flowing, the lakes are full and the flora and fauna seem to pop.

And with the great weather beckoning, the only problem might be finding enough spare time to check off every box on your list.

From hiking to biking to exploring, the North State’s outdoor playground calls adventure seekers.

You can kill two birds with a waterfall exploration that loops around Northern California and while it can be done in a day, you’ll want to plan for multiple adventures. Trust us.

The first stop on any waterfall-hunting adventure is Burney Falls in MacArthur-Burney Falls State Park. Once called the “Eighth

Wonder of the World” by President Theodore Roosevelt, Burney Falls is a 129-foot, spring fed cascade that flows all year round - 100 million gallons per day - but the thaw after winter brings about magical changes to the intermountain area. The oaks have begun to bud and the slightly cooler than average temperatures tend to be less busy than the extreme summer months when folks come to escape the valley heat.

Heading west on Highway 89 toward McCloud takes you to the next waterfall stop - the McCloud Falls. The Upper, Middle and Lower falls are all different in their own way, offering majestic spills and perfect picture opportunities. A trail links all three, but each has its own parking lot.

Headed back to Redding, Hedge Creek Falls allows sightseers the chance to see the back side of the cascade as you’re able to walk under the falls. Close to Hedge Creek Falls, but technically off limits is the sublime Mossbrae Falls.

Only accessible by wading across the chilly Sacramento River or walking up the railroad tracks, various groups have been working for years to make it more accessible. The falls are wildly popular despite the warnings and those who choose to head there are urged to be cautious and make sure, as they should anywhere in the North State, to leave it nicer than when they came.

Closer to home, Whiskeytown National Recreation Area has a quartet of waterfalls, one which remains closed while trail restoration continues following 2018’s Carr Fire. But those seeking a quick trip to see the falls are rewarded with Crystal Creek Falls, Boulder Creek Falls and Whiskeytown Falls. Brandy Creek Falls remains inaccessible for the foreseeable future.

Speaking of Whiskeytown, the trails in the park are almost perfect during spring for a hike or mountain bike ride thanks in part to the mild weather and the emergence of

wildflowers. But it’s not the only place in and around Redding to hike or bike. Chemise Peak near Shasta Dam offers 360 degree views of the valley as well as the dam. Salt Creek is a popular destination between Old Shasta and Redding and the area north of Red Bluff near Jellys Ferry Road includes the Iron Canyon Trail, the Upper Yana Trail and a host of other great treks.

If you want to be on the water, but aren’t sure you’re ready to dip into the lakes just yet - Brrrr! - a fishing excursion with a local fishing guide may just be the answer. After all, Redding has long been a fishing Mecca.

If you don’t want to wet your line, kayaking on Whiskeytown Lake or the Sacramento River remains a great option to get out, get some exercise and see things from a different perspective. If you want to go fast, most of the marinas on Lake Shasta offer boat rentals and though it might still be chilly to water ski or tube ride, exploring the largest reservoir in California is always an adventure.

And while you’re out and about, don’t forget to fuel up and even crack a cold one. The North State is home to hundreds of great restaurants from Mount Shasta to Red Bluff along with an ever-growing brewery scene that provides a perfect place to wet your whistle after a long day of adventure seeking.

And the best thing about the North State in spring is that you can probably stay busy every weekend and always find more adventures to keep you occupied into summer, fall and winter.

The McConnell Foundation’s Bell Plaza project is located on the corner of Shasta and California streets in downtown Redding. Acquiring the former Bell Rooms and transforming this space is part of the Foundation’s 10-year commitment to community vitality and downtown revitalization. Repurposed Bell bricks and recycled wood have been incorporated into the project, which is anchored by the Shasta Bike Depot and Pipeline Craft Taps & Kitchen Redding. They will share a public courtyard.

The Shasta Bike Depot, operated by Anne Thomas of Shasta Living Streets, will be a downtown transportation center offering e-bike tours, events, tourism services, and 24/7 secure bike parking. The Bike Depot team also operates Redding Bikeshare, a public system of electric pedal-assist bikes and docking stations at Bell Plaza, and throughout downtown.

Pipeline, a gastropub, will be operated by Kevin Flynn who, along with his business partner, Mark Clure, also owns and operates Pipeline Craft Taps & Kitchen Mount Shasta. What drew Kevin to this opportunity is the indooroutdoor dining, paired with bike and pedestrian activity.

The project is designed by Trilogy Architecture, and constructed by Modern Building Company. Special features include a copper roof, south facing wall mural by Mona Caron, Red Hot Metal custom gates, and a copper beer pipeline. The project will open in two phases in 2023. •

With an eye on the future and a heart that embraces its past, Red Bluff is a perfect blend of modern-day rural California life and old-time Western values.

The town of roughly 15,000 sits about 30 minutes south of Redding and is bisected by both Interstate 5 and the Sacramento River, which meanders through town on its way to the Pacific Ocean.

Founded during the Gold Rush booms that helped build the west, Red Bluff was originally known as Leodocia and Coverstburg before being named after the colorful banks of the Sacramento River.

And while Red Bluff moves forward in the 21st Century, there’s an ever-present feel of its roots. From the Red Bluff Round-Up, one of the west’s largest rodeos, to the annual Red Bluff Bull and Gelding Sale, the area fully embraces its rural heritage.

Both are held at the Tehama County Fair grounds and are rich in tradition and entertainment. The Round-Up has been crowning rodeo champions since 1921 and is known as “America’s Largest ThreeDay Rodeo,” drawing more than 30,000 and bringing in more than $5 million annually to the community.

The Bull and Gelding Sale started in 1941 when a group of local ranchers started a Hereford show and sale, and has grown to become what is widely recognized as the greatest stock show and sale west of the Rocky Mountains.

The annual Tehama County Fair also packs in the crowds with carnival rides, games and the alwaysentertaining Demolition Derby.

WET your WHISTLE

Whether you need to wet your whistle after a tough day at the office or just want to hang out with friends, there’s only one stop in Red Bluff you need to make: The Round Up Saloon.

The Washington Street bar features 16 ice-cold beers on tap with dozens more in bottles. If you want something else, they offer countless varieties of liquor with an amazing bartending staff that is ready, willing and able to whip up your favorite potent potable. “We are all about getting people together to have a good time,” say Kendall Mayfield and Adrian Hernandez. •

But Red Bluff is also a destination for those looking for adventure and fun. A short trip up Highway 36 lies the entrance to Lassen Volcanic National Park. Named after Peter Lassen, one of the first white settlers in the area, Lassen Park is an amazing outdoor playground in all four seasons. From hiking to the Lassen Peak summit and exploring the stinky fumaroles of Bumpass Hell and ranger-led snowshoe hikes at the Kohm Yah-mah-nee Visitors Center, Red Bluff is a great starting place for your adventures in the mountains to the west of town. It’s also where many historical photos of the last Lassen eruption in 1918 were taken.

Sticking in the past, Gaumer’s Mining and Mineral Museum welcomes visitors of all ages for free to explore mining equipment, Native

American artifacts, and rock and minerals from an age that helped build the west.

Or you can explore the William B. Ide Adobe State Historic Park, a three-acre expanse on the homestead of the first and only president of the California Republic. Ide was an early California settler and the park houses a one-room house tucked under an old oak believed to be his home from the early 1880s.

The Kelly-Griggs Museum is a classic, twostory Victorian home from the late 1800s where guides lead tours where era-dressed mannequins recreate the period. The area is home to many Victorian homes as well as the iconic Sacred Heart Catholic Church in the heart of downtown Red Bluff.

Speaking of downtown, the stretch of Main Street is a vibrant area of shops, places to eat and a throwback of the town’s history. The Cone & Kimball Plaza is the “Heart of Red Bluff” and features a clocktower that was rebuilt and restored in 1997 after it was destroyed in a 1984 fire. The historic State Theatre also is a key piece of downtown Red Bluff, a community meeting place that hosts national touring music and theater acts.

And in addition to all the history in and around Red Bluff, there’s a host of outdoor activities to explore in places like the Ishi Wilderness and Woodson Bridge State Recreation Area just outside of Corning to the south. •
