How a potent fusion of water, earth and creativity took Tyrane Van den Berg on a pottery journey to the islands.

Born in 1988, Ty is a self-taught potter, whose love for life and adventure saw him and his fiancée settle on St Martin’s on the Isles of Scilly. As a boy, Ty was fascinated with mud in all its forms and would spend hours scratching in the clay on the banks of a stream that bordered a family friend’s house on the coast of KwaZulu Natal. “I used to be amazed at how, when you put the mud in the stream, it would disappear into a cloud. I made my mother my first little pot in that spot, engraved with ‘I love mom’, I remember it so vividly.”

Since getting his first wheel three years ago when they arrived on Scilly, Ty has never looked back. His passion for the whole pottery process, from the raw ingredients and how clay behaves to the glazing and firing is evident both in his enthusiasm and the end results: “When I am in my studio, I feel a true sense of myself and it becomes a place of meditation. My mind is free to explore and follow my dreams and designs. I am inspired by pots of the past and the natural

forms and colours of nature, which are reflected in my choice of colours – blues, greens and earthy tones.”

Ty’s pottery studio on St Martin’s was once a derelict old shed. Now lovingly renovated, Ty creates beautifully individual pieces of tableware, each slightly different from the other. “I love how different shapes and glazes come out after firing,” says Ty, “and I am so lucky that the Isles of Scilly attracts thousands of visitors a year, which in turn allows me to sell my pottery even at this early stage of learning.”

Belying Ty’s self-confessed infancy in the pottery world, his designs have a beauty that transcend their functionality with glazes and patterns inspired by Scilly. If you’re looking to support small, local businesses this Christmas, Thrown by Ty is certainly one to look out for this season!

For family, friends and colleagues, it’s an act that reminds the person that they are cared for, which can be especially well-received at the end of a tough year. An e-commerce dedicated to tiramisu and a one-of-a-kind takeaway of top-notch Italian fresh pasta meals.

TheCornish Italian’s story is one of young entrepreneurship, and begins with a young man who pursued a career in theatre, only to find himself with his own business dedicated to the Italian dessert par excellence, tiramisu. Now shipped all over the UK, the tiramisu recipe is the same as always, belonging to his father, the person to whom much of the project is owed. Today there are many other menu items, with the format constantly evolving, and Ugo’s entrepreneurial skills are becoming increasingly refined.

But let’s turn back the clock and start from the beginning; born in 1991 from Imperia, Ugo Massabò is an artistic director who started working in the theatre at age 15. In 2005, after the death of his father, he created a show in his honour, which was staged until 2012. “When I left the theatre, I met Laura, my wife. We now have our baby boy Piero. She was the one who suggested putting my managerial skills at the service of an effective product, one that was simple for me to make and sell.” Thus, TiramisUGO was born! An artisan tiramisu brand created as a fabulous alternative to the classic ice cream sold in theatres.

When the pandemic hit in 2020, Ugo had to act quickly: “With the first lockdown, we had to adapt, so we started selling fresh homemade pasta meals via a newly created e-commerce takeaway.” A simple, yet delicious menu was born and The Cornish Italian began, now shipping throughout the UK.
