FROM THE EDITOR

Welcome

That’ll be the cobwebs blown away then! It’s been an interesting winter hasn’t it, one where some of our favourite spots have been getting a bit of a storm makeover as we’ve been sheltering from the winter poundings. One where I’ve discovered that I find storms a bit scary, that we have emergency torches that don’t work but amazing neighbours happy to help and that magical moments sometimes happen when you least expect them. Sometimes it really is the small things in life that create the biggest memories, just hanging out together and actually taking the time to stop the chores and play a bit of Lego… of course, it’s not long before life gets in the way again and the mountain of washing topples over, but what they say is true, time does go fast. With the promise of spring just around the corner perhaps now’s the time to make some resolutions and remember that an empty washing basket isn’t always the best measure of success (although it secretly does make you feel amazing, if only for a moment).

have fun, Sarah

Inspiring Spaces Children’s tastes change as quickly as their shoe size so there’s no need to blow the budget. Encourage your child to help choose a theme for their space and plan the project together. My five-year-old boy is big into pirates. It was time to say goodbye to toddlerstyle bunting. We’ve transformed his space into a boy’s bedroom patchworked with treasure maps and vintage prints. The project was easy, inexpensive and a brilliant excuse to get sticky with spray on glue. Avoid the cost of using real maps, instead checkout the fabulous selection of wrapping paper at Willow & Stone (willowandstone.co.uk). Treat this as a make-and-do session for grown-ups and unleash your inner child. Philippa Barton knows how to make good spaces great. Falmouth 2014 Tall Ships Regatta Supports the RNLI Falmouth in very difficult conditions. The Tall Ship was en-route to the Caribbean when the incident happened with 34 trainees onboard. The volunteer lifeboat crew received a letter of thanks from the Polish Ambassador for their part in the operation to bring the ship into port safely.

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) is the charity that saves lives at sea. Its lifeboats are crewed mainly by volunteers who go to sea in sometimes difficult and dangerous conditions to help save others in trouble. The charity is very proud to be supported by the Falmouth to Royal Greenwich Tall Ships Regatta, which will take place in August, and are delighted to welcome supporters to the lifeboat station in the race’s starting port of Falmouth.

Guy Botterill is the RNLI’s Community Fundraising Manager for Cornwall, he says; “The RNLI are extremely proud to be the nominated charity for the Tall Ships Regatta. As a charity, the RNLI relies on generous donations from members of the public and we are looking forward to welcoming people into Falmouth to visit our lifeboat station and meet our volunteer crew.’

The charity’s lifeboat station in Falmouth in Cornwall was opened in 1867 and houses an all-weather Severn class lifeboat ‘Richard Cox Scott’ and an inshore lifeboat ‘Eve Pank’. The RNLI also provide a lifeguard service on over 200 beaches across the UK, including on Falmouth’s Gyllyngvase beach.

In August (28-31), the Falmouth RNLI is delighted to be the nominated charity for the Falmouth to Royal Greenwich Tall Ships Regatta. This will include the opportunity to see the historic vessels close up, and to visit the RNLI lifeboat station to see the town’s lifeboats. Moonlit Ballrooms I think I might have mentioned before, that I have a slight aversion to role play. The whole thing brings back startling memories of forced ad-lib sessions at Thursday night youth theatre. Sessions that invariably resulted in me looking a fool and everyone else laughing at my expense, if that isn’t how it happened, it is certainly the memory I have. So, it becoming one of M’s favourite ways to play has been something of a bitter blow. Despite this, I put my feelings aside (yes, I’d like a Noddy badge please) and found ways to… for want of a better phrase… tolerate it. And it did get easier. For a while. I came up with, what I initially thought was a stroke of brilliance, a way to navigate the murky waters of my memories. But in so doing, it appears I may have created a slight problem. That being a five year old with some rather unrealistic perceptions of life. Examples include my marriage, or more specifically, my wedding day. I may have inferred that it started in a moonlit ballroom, with kissed hands, graceful sweeps to ‘our song’ and a cellist serenading our every move. It was a more glamorous suggestion than the reality of a slightly stumbly slow dance to Paul McCartney, on a carpeted dance floor in deepest Derbyshire. My Argentinian tango-ing father has still not quite forgiven me. I may also have suggested – when recruited for a game of mums and babies – that childbirth was a walk in the park. A moment of rainbows and sugar plums, fluffy clouds and dancing unicorns. I’m not sure about your experience, but on neither occasion did my child birth stories reflect a scene out of My Little Pony. More likely Terminator, or Rocky or… never mind. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not about to recreate a thirtysix hour labour for the purposes of cold hard reality, but still – where do you draw the line between fantasy and life? At what age do you suggest that a wedding day, as lovely as it may be, is unlikely to mirror a Disney film? And do I even need to? Perhaps I’m being over sensitive, perhaps - as with most things in life - she will come to realise the truth in her own sweet time, and my shattering her illusions so early in life only serves to fuel early onset bitterness. I’ve not resolved this one, if anyone has any suggestions I’m open to them. In the meantime, if you need me… I’ll be hiding under the dining table avoiding all forms of ‘let’s pretend’. As far as Cornwall’s family attractions go The Cornish Seal Sanctuary must have bagged one of the most beautiful spots going. Tucked into a bank on The Helford, the sanctuary is a fully operational seal rescue centre, and they’ve been busy this year. The horrendous weather has meant delays to releasing animals, so there have been a record number of pups on site being kept safe and sound. The sanctuary is set in 40 acres of gorgeous countryside with plenty of open green space to enjoy – plenty of children of all ages were taking advantage of the sloping hills - rolling down the hills over and over again – what a great way to fill up on clean, fresh air. Join in with the daily animal talks and feeding sessions, they are a great way to introduce yourselves to the residents and hear some of their stories; from the cheeky grey seal Yulelogs, who makes extra splashes to win extra food, to the enormous sealions who chase balls full of herrings. The knowledgeable staff are on hand for extra questions - my son had plenty – a little seal called Pumpkin had

obviously caught his imagination. Along with the seals and sealions, you can meet the sanctuary’s penguins and otters, plus if you’re in the right place at the right time see the team getting the sheep and goats to have a run around. There’s even an exciting rockpool area where (at certain times) you can hold a crab, touch a live starfish, and learn all about the creatures that live on our shores. You can take a well-earned rest from the wildlife in pirate corner – an excellent wooden play area with a big pirate ship to climb on, in and around … its quite near the café, and has picnic tables close by, with full view to the ship … think coffee, sit down, children playing – good combo! Before you go, don’t forget to pop into the environment zone – every bit of extra awareness to the dangers of dumping plastics and the benefits of recycling can only help.

LITTLE KITCHEN MAGICIANS

It’s always been a running joke that I’m more than a little rubbish in the kitchen. In my defence, when you’ve got a Mum that could give Mary Berry a run for her money, and a would-be Michelin star chef for a husband, you’re going to be a little spoilt...and in my case lazy! Premummyhood I admittedly revelled in my culinary inability, but as my obsession with what my daughter puts in her mouth has grown, so too has my wish for her to be more like Daddy than Mummy on this one. Time then to get comfy in an apron and help Amelie (and me!) get excited about cooking - cue Little Kitchen Magicians. New to Cornwall’s foodie scene last year, Little Kitchen Magicians offers healthy cookery workshops designed especially for children aged between 2 – 5 and 5 – 8 years. Amelie and I picked ‘Design your own pizza wheel’ from the delicious menu of workshops and joined one of the regular Saturday morning sessions at Heartlands in Pool. Looking cute in a chef hat and apron, and with freshly washed hands, Amelie was bursting with anticipation as she took her place in the mini brigade of

chefs spaced around the table. As Lizzie, the mastermind behind Little Kitchen Magicians, showed the group how to make the pizza base, Amelie’s little fingers dived into the bowl and great fun ensued as she created a squidgy mixture. The kneading and rolling stage called for my inexperienced assistance, but as Lizzie did the rounds with words of advice, we safely managed to move onto the ohso-tempting pizza toppings. A delicious assortment of chopped vegetables, meat and cheese was tasted, sprinkled, and tasted some more, by our young chefs. Lizzie introduced each ingredient and encouraged everyone to use whatever they fancied. After rolling and cutting the pizza into wheels (well done Mummy), Lizzie set the oven timers and used the cooking time to share tips on healthy meal ideas, while the smaller ones among us turned their talents to crafting pizzas from paper plates. As Amelie smeared foam tomatoes and paper mushrooms in glue, Lizzie’s passion for healthy food and cooking was infectious as she explained that Little Kitchen Magicians is all about developing skills, learning nutritious recipes and most importantly, having fun with food.

She had Amelie and I converted – now we just have to keep it up at home. There’s a cook in me yet! Julia Hughes @julia_c_hughes

Mini-beasts to look for this spring.

‘where kids go wild for wildlife’

Be an insect detective this spring Spring is a wonderful time to head outdoors seeking out “Mini-beasts” Mini-beasts is another word used for bugs and creepy-crawlies. These words refer to any small animal found on land or fresh water that is not warm-blooded and isn’t a reptile or an amphibian. Insects range in size from small to big, some creepy-crawlies have bodies made of segments, whereas others are encased in an armoured shell. You will find that some mini-beasts have no legs at all like worms, slugs and snails, whilst others have six to eight legs, such as spiders. A centipede can have as few as fifteen legs or as many as one hundred and seventy-one! One thing they do all have in common – or rather don’t have in common - is a backbone. In fact, none of them have a single bone in their bodies and are called invertebrates – which means without a backbone. Mini-beasts, or small invertebrates, are a plentiful source of food for larger creatures such as birds, bats, toads, lizards, shrews, hedgehogs, foxes and badgers, and their presence in our environment certainly bodes well for these larger predators!

Because they are prey species, minibeasts will not normally be too obvious, so searching in nooks, crannies of walls, in hedges, and under logs and stones, will reveal all sorts of different species. Shaking trees and brushing bushes will also dislodge these smaller creatures so that they can be observed more easily. Insects are very delicate creatures and can be easily killed if roughly handled, so always treat insects with care. Mini-beast life is all around us - so why not head out as a family, and using our step by step guide, go on your own mini-beast safari…

Download your own step-by-step guide on how to go on a mini-beast safari: www.cornwallwildlife trust.org.uk/foxclub _step_by_step_guides_to

Move leaf litter and dig deep to uncover woodlice, earwigs, millipedes and centipedes. Look closely at stinging nettles and thistles for hiding ladybirds. Sit quietly by a pond and watch dragonflies dance. Carefully roll a log away to reveal underneath creatures like slugs, snails and worms. Make sure you put the log back as you found it. The single-flowered rose family, which includes hawthorn, seems to be irresistible to our buzzing friends the bees.

Become a Member Membership to Fox Club costs just £8.00 a year, details of how to join can be found on the website www.cornwallwildlifetrust.org.uk/foxclub If you think your children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews or even your friend’s children would be interested in nature and caring about the environment then this is the club for them! The aim is to reduce uncertainty by enabling couples to enter into enforceable agreements before or during marriage. The agreements will set out who gets what if they split up, so it’s a done deal: a judge will have to follow the agreed terms so long as the agreement complies with some basic requirements (eg both parties had legal advice, it was properly drafted etc). But… couples can do that already and the court now will follow the agreement if appropriate. And under the proposals the court won’t have to stick to the agreement where necessary to meet the needs of a party or the children. For many that’s the position now: “Need” is one of the driving factors for most divorcing couples, with priority to the children’s needs: we need secure housing, income and pension provision. Disputes centre around what’s required to meet those needs. So if the proposals come into force they may not change very much in practice for some. Back to the need for good quality legal advice, but not for Arnie: his needs are met, apparently.
