Summer sneaks it’s nifty little head around the corner with a very warm welcome from our team… There are heaps of things to look forward to in the coming months – take a flick through this issue of Octopus for some great ideas. See Cornwall Wildlife Trust’s brilliant guide to rockpooling, the how to’s and the what to finds… see if you can spot a limpit on the move this year or a crafty crab taking shelter from the sun and mini nets. Cornwall’s theme parks have thrown their doors open for the season with some great new rides and attractions, in this issue Julia takes a trip to Paradise Park, we have an update from Flambards with a chance to win tickets and we check out Crealy’s new toddler area – it’s a winner. RAC Road Safety Film Competition RAC calls on South West schools to use new Aardman character to make short animated road safety films The RAC is calling on children in the South West to create their own short animated films about road safety for a chance to win £1,000 for their school. The South West-based motoring organisation has joined forces with the Department for Transport’s THINK! road safety team and Aardman Animations to launch a campaign targeting primary, junior and secondary schools with important road safety messages with the aim of putting an end to child road accidents. At the heart of the campaign is Horace, the new road safety mascot for the 21st century developed by Aardman, the creators of Wallace and Gromit. As part of the campaign, teams of school children in three age categories are being challenged to make their own stop-frame animations featuring Horace in different road safety scenes. Competition entry information The competition is open to school children aged four to 16, as well as clubs, Scouts, Brownies and other groups as well as individuals. Entry is via the website rac.co.uk/childroadsafety, which contains links to a comprehensive range of teaching resources. There are three age categories: four to seven; seven to 11, and 11 to 16. The competition closes on Friday 4th July 2014. First prize in each age category is £1,000 for the winning school and there are three runners-up prizes of an Aardman model-making

Cooking With Ben Quinn So Summer is here and the first BBQ’s are well under way. This is your chance as a family to start the development of your very own BBQ sauce! We have been perfecting ours for the last 10 years that we have lived in Cornwall for. I love it with a bit of spice, the wife, Sammy, loves a fruity note and our daughter, Evie, thinks that the smoky kick is what it is all about! So this recipe is two fold. First a great take on the classic lamb kebab and secondly the foundation for you families secret recipe BBq sauce!
For the kebabs to serve 4 you will need: Ingredients 800g lamb rump, cut into finger thick strips 4 pittas 1 carrot grated Hand full of raisons 1 tsp mint sauce ½ red onion sliced thin 2 tbsp Yoghurt As much of your BBQ sauce as you want! Hand full of fresh herbs like coriander and mint.
Method Simply fast grill the lamb and rest well with plenty of salt and pepper. Toss the vegetables and raisons with the mint sauce and load up the toasted pittas, pop a few lamb strips on top and a dab of mayo as well as your sauce, finish with a few herbs and dig in! Now the sauce! Once you have something you love than make loads! It will last the summer in the fridge and will make those impromptu BBQs a real event. Start with a paste of 4 onions, 8 garlic cloves, a big nob of ginger, big handful of coriander stalks and a tbsp. of fennel seeds. Pop these ingredients into a food blender and puree, then fry for 5 mins over a low heat to really get the flavours going. Once the paste is fried off add a pint of tommy ketchup, 4 tbsp of Worcestershire sauce, 1 heaped tbsp. of smoked paprika and 4 large eating apples, skinned, cored and diced along with ½ pint of apple juice. Simmer this lot for 40 mins until think and glossy. Take the sauce off the heat and blend until smooth. Season to taste with salt, pepper, malt vinegar and brown sugar. Keep in a sterilized jar in the fridge. Quite an undertaking but well worth it. Let me know how you get on! @chefbenquinn

Young people use the Tall Ships Regatta to get creative. This August more than 40 international vessels, along with an anticipated 100,000 visitors, will converge on Falmouth from 28 August for four days of celebrations before the start of the race. The Race, organised by Sail Training International, takes the vessels along the south coast via the Isle of Wight and on to the Thames, with further celebrations at Royal Greenwich, 5-9 September. John Dyer, artist in residence for the Regatta, has unveiled his Tall Ships & Small Ships painting, based on memories of the last Falmouth Tall Ships Festival in 2008. Now, with the help of story-tellers, performers, a playwright and a hip-hop poet, youngsters are being asked to paint or tell their own salty tales and be in with a chance to win a special print and have their work displayed for public viewing. The project, part of The BIG Art & Storytelling project, encourages young people can look at John Dyer’s painting and read the professional writing and get inspired to create their own masterpieces and submit them. “I want children to be inspired by our project and to really use their natural creativity. Every child is born a natural artist and storyteller but these talents often wither as they grow. This project

aims to put their creativity centre stage. We have built a brilliant interactive web site for the children to look at and use. All of their work will be exhibited on the site and we always aim to keep their work online for years to come.” John Dyer. Young people rolled up their sleeves at Falmouth Art Gallery, where ten year old Charlotte Taylor from Constantine School declared, “Everyone’s having a party in John’s painting, the Tall Ships are all lit up at night and the fireworks are like big splashes across the sky. It’s the fireworks that are in my painting – but my story’s going to be about a cat that gets lost.” “You quite often hear of a work of literature inspiring a piece of art but not so often the other way around,” says John Dyer. “I believe everybody is born highly creative and artistic – it’s what helps us develop and learn – and it’s a real privilege to be encouraging artistic talents, working with children across the country in this special and magical event.” Falmouth Art Gallery have FREE workshops based on the project for schools/community groups and families. ‘Jim’ by Theo age 11 Jim sighted a cat alone, abandoned by its master – no-one looking for it, no-one tending it. Jim, pasty in hand, walked cautiously towards the frightened creature, broke off a meaty chunk, held it out and waited. The cat crept forward, its pads pressing on the ground lightly, sparingly knocked the meat from his hand and chewed on it curiously, tugging at the juicy delight. After that he took the cat home and as they walked the fireworks started reflecting off the giant sails down in the harbour. Sailors climbed the tall strong masts of their proud ships. The water, dazzling on the seals and dolphins, gleamed in the stars. Cries of “Anchor down” and all the bangs, whizzes and fizzes greeted him on the way to the door. Then the music of the sea commenced, swishes and crashes of the waves on the pebbles, climbing their way on to the rocks. The squarks of seagulls crying at passers-by. A dog’s harsh bark sends the seagulls flying towards the moon...
Wilamena, aged 7 has already created a poem ‘Tall Ships Galore’ by Wilamena age 7 Tall ships galore in the port of Falmouth, people climbing up and up the salty rigging, hanging from the sails. And cheering people standing at the quay, waving flags as the soft breeze blows in their faces. ... Purple boats that are the Tall ships, sprays the boat with salty water. ... Just as the clock strikes 12 the fireworks explode, the accordion player starts to join in, the vibration of the accordion I’ve never seen that before. I think the Accordion just gives it that one bit more. It wakes the cats the dogs and birds, sniffing and looking for left over crumbs, pasties, sandwiches what ever is around. ... Little children wondering, thinking what it must be like, standing on the masts singing songs and where will the wind take them ? What will it bring? The top 200 entries will be hung at National Maritime Museum Cornwall and the best writing will be acted out. In addition 24 top prize winners will meet artist John Dyer and receive a £95 tall ships print at an exhibition event. Having the excuse to recreate some of my childhood memories is one of my fave things about being a mummy. I may have ditched the dodgy 80s fashion but the excitement that a trip to a local visitor attraction brought to my younger self hasn’t waned, just take a recent visit to Paradise Park in Hayle... I was with Leah, who has been my sidekick since, well, forever, and having shared more than a few trips to Paradise Park together in our younger years we were eager for our mini trio (Amelie, William and Isla) to experience one of our childhood highlights. With a few years under our belt since our last visit, we were pleasantly surprised that time has worked in favour of this well-loved wildlife sanctuary. It has the same core values – conservation, education and entertainment – but with some welcome new additions. Alongside the colourful array of birds featuring everything from Macaws to the Cornish Cough, there are more familiar pet animals and a farmyard section where

a delighted Isla had her out-stretched hand licked by friendly pygmy goats who quickly munched their way through our specially bought bags of feed - literally! The mini sheep and donkeys were given adoring strokes while our stop beside the hen house inspired a round of egg-cellent jokes (very funny if you’re under five). Amelie’s favourite spot was poolside, proudly watching William as he volunteered himself to throw fish to the penguins, while the Jungle Express mini train which toodles around the attraction was a winner all round. We also saw the otters being fed and greeted the beautiful flamingos in the Victorian Gardens with suitably impressed ohhs and ahhs. Fun in the park was followed by animal themed lunch boxes in the Otter Cafe which just left the JungleBarn indoor play area where Leah and I wasted no time getting accustomed to the slides and ball pools that our younger selves missed out on.

Before you start rockpooling remember safety matters! •

How to Rummage in a rockpool The things you will need to rockpool: • Sensible clothing and footwear • A white or palecoloured plastic tray or bucket • A seashore identification guide (see the link below) • Clear bucket or white tray (to see the creatures clearly) • Magnifying glass or pot (to study the creatures more closely) • A small net (optional for deep rockpools)

Be careful on the shore at all times; make sure you don’t get caught out by the tide look for tide times on the internet, buy a tide timetable from your local newsagents or call the local tourist information centre. Keep your adult close by Tell someone where you are going and when you expect to get home. Keep away from the bottom of cliffs and soft mud or quicksand areas. Do not touch dangerous items such as broken glass, syringes or chemical drums. Wash your hands before you put your fingers in your mouth or eat anything.
Rockpools and the seashore are teaming with both animal and plant life, whatever season you choose to explore them. From the smallest planktonic creatures and plants to the huge variety of fish and invertebrates that feed on them, you are certain to find fascinating things to study whenever you go rockpooling.
Rockpooling
When you are out on the seashore remember that wildlife is all around you. Puddles of seawater left behind when the tide retreats create rockpools. They contain lots of different sea creatures and are great places to explore. 1. Make sure the tide is low – the lower the better. 2. Choose a pool small enough for you to reach into the middle with your arm or net. 3. Stay near the edge, but don’t stand in it. Do not walk through rockpools as you may well damage the occupants as well as scare them away. Also, try to keep your shadow from falling on the pool as this will alert the creatures to your presence and make them more difficult to spot 4. Fill a clear or white tray with some seawater (from the pool would be good) and then place it somewhere safe and sturdy beside you. You can then place any creatures you catch in the tray to take a closer look. 5. Only put one creature at a time into your tray or bucket, putting many in at the same time could be stressful for them. Once you have looked at a creature pop it right back where you found it.
6. Sea creatures are very delicate and we don’t recommend you handling them, but if you do then pick them out safely and be very careful and gentle. 7. If rockpooling in deep rockpools, you could use a small net to scoop up fast moving critters like fish and prawns – DO NOT stab or jab your nets into the pools as you may hurt the creatures living in the pool. 8. Push aside seaweed and very carefully lift up rocks to look for creatures underneath. Do not pull and drag creatures out of crevices or remove those that are stuck to rocks. 9. Crealy good fun for everyone

I’ve always loved that the A39 is called the Atlantic Highway, route to the Camel Trail, the Royal Cornwall Show and, tucked down those gorgeous lanes past the farms, in a beautiful spot… Cornwall’s Crealy. It’s been a good few years since we were last there and there have been a few changes. We headed out on a rainy day with a team of children aged 3 to 10 to see what we could discover. T&
Everyone was immediately enthralled by the new Swampy and Dina Land area – although designed for smaller children there was no holding everyone back with classics like Dina’s Dancing Flowers (think tea cups), and Swampy’s Drop a mini version of those rides that zoom up and down. It’s a brilliant area where even small children can really get their own theme park experience. It was raining so there was no point in battling to stay dry – the raging rivers
ride has always been a favourite – shooting down massive water slide in an inflatable boat is brilliant fun, and the log flume is always a winner… soaking wet but with lots more to discover we dried off as best we could and continued exploring.
You know it’s a good day when no one wants to leave but yet, as if by magic, everyone is asleep before you hit that magical Atlantic Highway to head home… we all had a wonderful time.
The beauty of Crealy is the variety – there are traditional family classics like zip wires, pirate boats, plenty of drop slides, climbing and bumpy slides – plus several indoor play areas all in plenty of wide open space so you don’t feel cramped. There are plenty of picnic tables and several cafes for taking a break. As if that wasn’t enough there are crocodiles, snakes, (spiders), horses, goats and a pet area to keep you busy. You can easily fill a whole day at Crealy with things to please all ages. Tickets are cheaper online so it’s worth checking that first at www.crealy.co.uk there are also annual memberships available for £32.50.

Peppa Pig returns for the second time this year for story time and meetand great sessions.
