PROUD TO BE PART OF

Welcome

From the Editor to the April edition of Cornwall Living!

Member of:

Cornwall has long since been known for its venerable history of art and artists. The Newlyn School was a famous art colony based in west Cornwall from the 1880s until the early 20th century. One of its founders, Stanhope Forbes, established a school of art in the town, producing the next generation of artists. Today, Newlyn School of Art continues to provide inspiring art courses and landscape painting holidays taught by over 30 of the most respected artists working in Cornwall today.

St Ives also played an instrumental part in putting Cornwall's art scene firmly on the map which was a centre for modern and abstract developments in British art from the 1940s to the 1960s. Today it is home to Tate St Ives, the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden as well as a plethora of highly respected galleries. The visual arts have also been taught in Cornwall for over a century at Falmouth School of Art. Now under the umbrella of Falmouth University, this remains a centre for creative excellence.

In celebration of such creativity across the county, this issue of Cornwall Living is dedicated to art in all its forms. From page 21 we hear from Jilly Easterby about this year's Open Studios event with a focus on artist Sue Read, a painter of sea and coast whose work celebrates our proximity to and relationship with the ocean. We are also delighted to bring you a special art supplement (from page 67) that shines a light on some of Cornwall's leading artists and galleries.

Thankfully, we also found space for our ever-popular competitions (from page 93) where readers have the chance to win their own piece of Cornish art as well as a host of other exciting prizes.

Festival fun on the Roseland

Now in its 17th year, the Roseland Festival, which will run from Saturday 22nd April to Friday the 5th May 2023, is a much-loved annual event. This part of the county has long been known for its unassuming, unspoilt and natural beauty, surrounded by the serene and sheltered Fal River and Carrick Roads. This cultural festival is a celebration of local food and drink, arts and crafts, books, music and performance, and walks and talks.

New for this year will be a polytunnel supper; a partnership between local farmer and producer Roseland Market Garden and chef Rupert Cooper, of Philleigh Way Cookery School. The empty polytunnel will be transformed into a pop-up supper club, with a banquet table, candles and wild flowers, whilst outside Rupert will cook a three-course meal over fire, with canapés and far-reaching views down to St

Mawes Bay. The farm feast will use produce harvested entirely from the Roseland Market Garden’s surrounding land; true farm to fork eating.

Another new food event in the calendar is the crab lunch, held at Curgurell Farm, just outside Portscatho. The barn will be transformed with festoon lighting, haybales and long tables filled with fresh seasonal salads and morning-caught crab by the Taffinder family themselves. As a registered charity, the festival is a vehicle for local fundraising and initiatives aiming to improve and develop public education and the appreciation of arts and culture in all its forms on the Roseland.

New treasures added to the Museum of Cornish Life

The Museum of Cornish Life, based in Helston, has unearthed and researched an array of new treasures thanks to the rediscovery of antiquities and objects from the now closed Camborne Museum, which have been largely untouched for 17 years. Stored in the eaves of the museum’s roof, the work was originally started by museum volunteer Julia Webb-Harvey.

Thanks to a grant of £28,000 from Art Fund, Dr Tehmina Goskar has worked her way through the collections from Camborne Museum which was open from 1913 to 2005.

Visitors to the museum can see some of the Camborne collection, including ancient Egyptian artefacts in the Victorian classroom and the alleged walking stick of famed Cornish engineer Richard Trevithick – research showed that it isn’t a walking stick but a horse-measuring yardstick. The Trevena Cross team are primed for spring

You could be forgiven for not being familiar with the cornucopia of fascinating plants and explosions of colour that lie beyond the gates of Trevena Cross, nestled just off the main road as you pass through the village of Breage on the A394 between Helston and Penzance. Just behind the garden centre itself sits a huge growing nursery spanning the equivalent of 25 football fields! Experienced growers of a huge range of plants for nearly 50 years, including rare and unusual specialities, Trevena Cross is a plant lover’s paradise.

Growing more than 90% of all their own plant stocks makes spring a very satisfying time at Trevena. Months of hard work in the nursery are realised as thousands of shrubs, perennials, hedging plants, veg plants, patio packs and more make the journey down to the garden centre, ready to wow spring shoppers. Complementing the vast and diverse plant stocks – which also include

large specimen trees like palms and olives – is an exciting outdoor living range. Providing stiff competition as tempting spring buys is an eclectic selection of garden furniture, as well as sizzling hot chimineas, firepits and solar water features. Throw a one-stop garden shop and a jungle of houseplants into the mix, alongside the highly regarded on-site Garden Kitchen Café, and you have yourself the perfect spring destination at this family-founded, owned and run independent Cornish business.

Plus, a little piece of Trevena can find a home anywhere in the UK, with the garden centre’s local and national delivery service ensuring there is never a barrier to enjoying its offering

Liquorice makes waves at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary

As we head into spring, we come to the end of another busy pup-rescue season for the animal rescue team at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary. Running from September until March, it’s a time of year that sees a number of young seals running into trouble, individuals that the Seal Sanctuary has been rescuing and rehabilitating for more than 60 years! Among the youngsters who came through the doors this year, it’s safe to say that some very special cases have kept the team incredibly busy. In fact, the case of Liquorice will certainly be one to remember – having made international headlines on her arrival to Gweek!

Liquorice came to the Sanctuary at an estimated ten-weeks-old with breathing difficulties, and was very underweight. After being spotted on the beach by local walkers, the animal care specialists jumped into action to help her.

However, on arrival, Liquorice was found to be a melanistic pup, which means she was completely black from head-to-toe (including black eyes, fur and nails). The condition, which is a result of too much melanin in the skin, is seen in just one in four hundred grey seals and is even rarer in females. In fact, it’s estimated to be just the third time the Sanctuary has taken in a melanistic pup in 20 years. While it’s expected Liquorice will make a full recovery, it’s only thanks to the visitors and supporters that the team can help pups just like her. With around 50-70 pups making it through their doors every winter, find them in Gweek, near Helston, for a day out that makes a difference.

For more information call 01326 221361 or visit www.sealsanctuary.sealifetrust.com

For those who love Cornwall, it will come as little surprise that it provides endless inspiration for creatives across the entire spectrum of disciplines.

Artists are drawn here not only for its muchcelebrated light, but also its ability to instil that calm feeling of reflection that enables those with creative proclivities to find their state of flow.

At Cornwall Living we are fortunate enough to see, learn and write about Cornish art in all its diversity, and it never ceases to amaze us just how fertile the ground is here for creative innovation. Cornwall based artists continue to push the envelope, instilling the pressing themes of the world into their work and showing us that art is not only an identifier of time and of the world’s most troubling issues, but also provocative of its audience. It sparks conversation, it inspires thought, and in doing so it plays no small part in enacting change.

Of course, there is also the element of beauty to be found in Cornish art, and sometimes it is enough to find resonance with a piece of work simply because it catches your eye. They do say that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and it is our hope in this issue that we have showcased a fair representation of Cornish art so that you, our reader, might behold something you love.

In fact, if you have been staring at a blank piece of wall for some time and wondering what to do with it, it’s fair to say that this issue is a great place to begin your search for its occupant. Not only do we have our dedicated Arts supplement from page 67, we are also celebrating another year of Open Studios Cornwall, a highly anticipated event that sees Cornish creatives throw open their doors and welcome lovers of art to come in and gain an insight into their world. Written by Jilly Easterby, the following pages provide an inside-the-studio view of the life and work of Sue Read, as well as a select preview of other artists who will be participating in this year’s event. So, without further ado, let’s hand over to Jilly!

and a whole lot more besides – as we follow

As the seasons turn and the days lengthen, hundreds of artists, designers and makers from across the Duchy are preparing to throw open the doors of studios and workshops to share their artistic practice against a uniquely Cornish backdrop of creek, countryside and coast. From Saturday 27th May to Sunday 4th June, Open Studios Cornwall will take us on an exploration of multiple art forms –from paintings to pottery, furniture to felt making, weaving to woodturning and a whole lot more besides – as we follow distinctive orange ‘O’s across villages and towns to curate our own art trails. But the event is as much about people as it is about place. It provides us with the chance to dive into a wave of creative possibility and plunge into the depths of emotion that lie beneath. The power of nature to heal the body and soothe the mind is a recurring theme that binds this year’s participants – whether it be the haunting cry of the curlew, the glimmer of golden gorse on a grey day, the wildness of wintry skies, the relentless pounding of surf on rocky outcrops or the searing hues of a summer sunset.

Artist, Sue Read, takes her inspiration from north Cornwall’s dramatic coastline and the elemental power of the ocean. She immerses herself within it to read the waves before committing them to canvas in their everchanging shapes, tints and moods. “I am at my happiest when I am in the water and swim in the sea all year round,” explains Sue. “It is a place to imagine new artworks and to really connect with the natural world, to be conscious of how the water moves, how it feels and how it catches the light.”

Many of Sue’s paintings begin on the beach – en plein air – because it is important for her to absorb the sounds and saltiness of her surroundings. In a recent interview for the BBC TV series, Rick Stein’s Cornwall, Sue spoke of ‘mordros’ – the Cornish word for ‘sound of the sea’, which speaks as much of her passion for her birthplace as it does of its cathartic influence on her creative approach. “There is a lot of weather in my paintings, from brooding skies to crashing waves. The waves I paint come very instinctively from the feeling of being in the water, submerged by their intensity, and the timelessness of the tide.

“Being out in nature stimulates all the senses and I gather in the sights, sounds and smells of my environment, the feel of the air and the light on the water, and record them in my memory to inform my future work,” Sue adds.

“Many of the larger wave paintings that I create emerge from my being so close to them in the ocean. I am not trying to capture them exactly. My intention is to encapsulate the movement within them. I aim to imbue them with the rush of adrenaline I feel when I first run in, confronted by their sheer power; when I dive beneath them, spin around in them and feel their full force, or simply enjoy the pure exhilaration of catching a wave and riding it in. I want the viewer to understand and feel what I felt when I was in that moment. That moment is incredibly healing and I really want them to feel that too.”

This overriding sense of wellbeing that seaswimming and being present in the natural world provides is not her only creative catalyst. For Sue, it is about ‘finding the quiet': “Being outside at the beginning and end of the day, when you are closest to the sounds and feel of nature, can be meditative and freeing but it can also evoke feelings of vulnerability, fragility, excitement and empowerment, especially on those stormy days when the light is fading and the contrast between sky and sea is so stark.” The result of this perspective is a body of work that is suffused with atmosphere and layers of extraordinary Cornish light as well as personal experience. “Because I was born here, I think I am responding to a deeprooted connection to North Cornwall, an area that is often neglected and forgotten,” Sue continues.

rooted connection to North Cornwall, an area that is often neglected and forgotten,”

Located just beyond Bude, Sue completes her coastal compositions in a beautiful barn studio on a farm that has belonged to her family since the early 1900s. “Back in the studio, the ideas that came to mind whilst in the water become part of the conversation I have with paint. After applying watery layers of colour to my canvas, the shape of a wave or a familiar fragment of coastline will emerge from my filing cabinet of memories.

“In fact, my life is a constant process of seeing and recording ideas and thoughts to be painted, to inform new pieces of artwork, or depict the narrative of this precious part of Cornwall, which is integral to my own story. My paintings do not contain any figurative elements but by making work that is borne of my own experience, I hope my paintings touch, connect and resonate with those who view them.”

Citing influences as diverse as Pierre Bonnard (1867 to 1947), Joan Eardley (1921 to 1963) and Rose Hilton (1931 to 2019) – an amalgam of French Impressionism, Scottish landscape painting and the St Ives School –the allure of her homeland and Sue’s sense of connection to it infuses her artistic output with an authentic voice.

Whether she is memorising the fluid colour palette of the sea – with its whirlpool of greens, blues, turquoises and greys – or observing the ocean through the tangle of a Cornish hedge, Sue is wholly at one with nature when capturing the essence of her beloved Cornwall.

Atlantic storms have shaped this stretch of coastline over centuries and Sue reflects this sense of erosion and metamorphosis by using similar techniques in the studio. “My process is one of sanding, wiping off, glazing further layers of light and adding impasto brush marks, where paint is applied thickly to provide texture,” Sue explains.

Artists'PROFILES Some of the many artists featured at this year's Open Studios:

Sara Bevan

Painting/Printmaking – Sennen

Sara’s dramatic landscapes and seascapes reflect the battered and windswept environment of Land’s End. Painting in oils and mixed media, she explores colour, texture and mark-making to produce artwork that is energetic and lively. From her clifftop studio, overlooking Sennen Cove, Sarah also produces playful botanical monotypes using natural vegetation.

Jennie Hale

Ceramics/Pottery – Liskeard

Jennie’s work reflects her passion for the natural world. Her sgraffito-decorated earthenware is full of life and vitality. It is informed by the illustrated journals that are an integral part of Jennie’s practice in which she makes notes and drawings about the wildlife she encounters near her Bodmin Moor studio.

Lee Stevenson

Painting/Printmaking – Penzance

Lee’s figurative work in oils, etchings and linocut prints are created from studies made in the landscape. Being surrounded by the sea provides a strong sense of place and, informed by his drawings from observation, his artwork not only records what he sees but how he feels at the time.

www.leestevenson.co.uk

Roberta Hopkins

Mixed Media/Painting – Lostwithiel

Roberta’s abstract paintings are inspired by the rocks and pebbles of the rugged Cornish coastline, and influenced by the textures, materials, shapes and colours that she is surrounded by. She also creates collages and cards from her own handprinted papers and hand-bound sketchbooks with covers that feature her original artwork.

Stacey Beaumont

Sculpture

– Bude

In her sculpture, Stacey explores the transitional effect of light through glass and uses reclaimed local Delabole slate to create texture, form and structure. By studying the changing natural rhythms that surround us, she captures an energy that transforms installations into artworks that are dynamic and responsive to their environments.

TEN YEARS AFTER

When Bruce and Charlie Davis laid the foundations for Kestrel Specialist Handrail Systems, little did they know how the business would develop into the thriving enterprise that it is today. From originally supplying off-the-shelf solutions, Kestrel has since begun to offer a little more – something more bespoke. As the years passed, with Katie and Bruce Grant taking the reigns, they have taken the business in their own direction, building up a reputation through hard work with an ear to customer satisfaction.

Working predominately in Cornwall, the focus has been on offering a supply and installation service, giving customers as little or as much support as they need throughout the process. This begins from the first phone call, via an on-site visit to regular discussions as the installation progresses. They’ve worked on maintaining a high-quality product over the years, building great relationships with their suppliers, many of whom they’ve used from the outset.

They love what they do, as Katie explains: “We’ve had some favourite projects over the years, be it the location, a particular customer or an exciting design. One such example was a recent contemporary new-build by a bespoke property developer. The

project was particularly interesting for us, as we undertook several areas of work, including a Juliet balcony, internal glass guarding, balustrades and a chic stainless handrail for the steps. We also created a striking stainless down pipe guttering, which was made entirely to order.” She continues, “Living and working in Cornwall allows us the privilege of being in a unique part of the country and to appreciate what people want. We have wonderful views that we need to make the most of and we are happy to make sure that our customers enjoy theirs to the fullest!”

They continue to be a small team –with Katie focussing on administration with support from sister-in-law Cathy, while Bruce and James are out and about installing. So, whatever the scope of your project – whether large or small, contemporary or more traditional – why not see what the team at Kestrel Specialist Handrail Systems can do for you?

Discovering

Range cookers are becoming increasingly popular as an energy-efficient way to cook food. With rising energy prices, they offer an economical solution for households looking to save money on their energy bills. Not only do they use less electricity than traditional ovens and stoves, they also provide a more consistent cooking experience due to their even heat distribution. In addition, range cookers are available in a variety of sizes and styles, allowing you to find the perfect fit for your kitchen layout.

Wendron Stoves is proud to be an Everhot dealer; the brand's elegant, British-made range cookers are the choice for country kitchens across the UK. The first Everhot was invented over 40 years ago, and to this day they are still providing both warmth and the perfect cooking conditions. An Everhot is designed specifically to work with renewable energy sources, such as solar power, using up to half of the energy of traditional range cookers, making them the most energy-efficient range cooker on the market.

é ABOVE Everhot 120i in sage

Everhot electric range cookers have radiant heat ovens and are available in seven sizes to fit any kitchen design, and 21 colours, so there is one to fit every space or interior style. From bold, striking brights to charming, heritage tones, these cookers are handmade in Everhot’s carbon-negative factory in the Cotswolds, combining British craftsmanship with energy-efficient engineering based on decades of heritage and innovation.

An Everhot has all the benefits of a traditional range, perfect for cooking and gently warming your kitchen, as well as drying laundry, making a cuppa, toasting bread on the hot plate and warming wellies and coats before school – you'll wonder how you ever lived without one. However, while the look may be traditional, an Everhot cooker is packed with modern features such as programmability, temperature control, a grill and the latest induction hob technology. This truly is the only cooker you will need in your kitchen.

In terms of cost to run, the true test of a heat storage cooker's efficiency is what it costs to run over a 24-hour period with its ovens and cast-iron plates turned on. An Everhot is designed to run 24/7, with the benefit that during warmer months, Everhot’s default factory set ECO program can be used to drop the cooker into a low power mode from 9pm each evening to 6am each morning. Many of Wendron Stove’s customers won’t use their ovens in the morning, and with the option to separate the heat-up of the hot plate and the ovens by up to 12 hours these range cookers are very versatile.

Sustainability remains deeply embedded in Everhot’s DNA and the engineers never stop trying to find ways to improve their cookers’ efficiency. Not only does the Everhot series use less than half the energy of their

traditional counterparts, but the production site runs on green energy and is now proud to be carbon neutral. Conserving energy is the core principle of Everhot’s design, with local manufacturing used where possible as well as offsetting any damage their manufacturing processes cause. All the cookers are assembled in Gloucestershire, with parts exclusively sourced from the UK. The company even has its own energy source; a 25kw water turbine from 1978 that also powers its head office.

From the smaller Everhot 60, which is suitable for kitchens where space is at a premium, to the newest member of the Everhot family, the 160i, which has four full ovens with two top grills and an easy-to-adjust control panel neatly hidden between a middle fifth door, there is a cooker for everyone. Wendron Stoves has eight Everhot range cookers on display in its showrooms – two in Helston and six in Truro – so you can see all of the benefits and appreciate the incredible craftsmanship for yourself.

With over 30 years of experience, Wendron Stoves prides itself on its bespoke customer service. With a wide range of both wood burning stoves and range cookers, displayed across two elegant showrooms, the choice is endless. Nathan and his team are able to advise on the best stove or range for your home and with their own experienced fitters all you need worry about is which product to choose. With prices of Everhot cookers rising in April, there has never been a better time to invest in the heart of your home.

STYLISHLY secure

Discovering your perfect door can be a tricky task, particularly when trying to decipher the many options available on the market. At Collingtons, the team understand this conundrum, which is why they only supply doors that are durable and secure, and that exceed expectations. “Our Apeer composite doors are 70mm in thickness,” says General Manager, Steve Cobbin, “to provide a robust, durable and weather-resistant door. They have a super-strong, metal reinforced and highly insulating polyurethane core, and are double rebated, which adds additional draught protection by creating an internal secondary seal. At Collingtons, we only supply 70mm composite doors, rather than the 44mm options, which ensures our customers have the best product available.”

Collingtons’ anti-bump, anti-drill, antipick, anti-snap, Kitemarked cylinder lock barrels are fitted as standard to every Apeer door. These locks are ‘Secured by Design’ accredited, which is the official police security initiative that works to improve the security of buildings. And as if that wasn’t enough, the doors are also triple-glazed with an anti-tamper glazing system.

Apeer doors offer the very latest in design and materials, helping to keep the heat in

and the cold out, making them some of the most energy efficient on the market. And at this energy conscious time, keeping the heat in has never been so important, so there couldn’t be a better time to fit a door that not only guarantees style, but also security and efficiency! As well as all of this, doors from Apeer are low-maintenance, and allow you to choose from a wide range of robust RAL colours, in both contemporary and traditional styles, so that your new door promises to match both you and your home seamlessly.

“Our Helston showroom is open and has examples of our Apeer Composite GRP doors,” says Steve, “so you can visit and see for yourself how they feel and operate. We’re open Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 4.30pm, and would be delighted to meet you, talk you through the products and answer any questions you may have.”

NIGHT’S SLEEP A perfect

Every year our sleep is interrupted and put out of sync with the move into British Summer Time at the end of March. With lighter evenings approaching, we are going to look in a bit more depth at how you can make your room darker, helping you sleep better, with a little help from the expert team at Shuttercraft Cornwall.

Have you ever wondered how the body finds it natural to sleep at night? When it is light, our bodies automatically assume that it is time to be awake. The body then releases melatonin in mid-to-late evening, a hormone that helps control your daily wake-sleep cycle, relaxing the body and

helping us to drift off. It’s therefore no surprise that many more of us struggle to adjust to a new sleeping pattern when British summer kicks in! To help our bodies overcome this daily release of melatonin, we can invest more in our bedrooms, and make a few changes which will impact positively on the way we sleep. Changing temperature levels, getting a comfier mattress, switching off electronic devices, blocking out sound and adopting a relaxing routine are all important ways to create the perfect sleep environment.

If you are looking to help ensure a better night’s sleep, Shuttercraft’s Shutter and Shade could be the answer. Designed with a

honeycomb blackout blind integrated with the shutters to make the room as dark as possible, they’re ideal if you or your family need to sleep during the day or if you have harsh streetlights outside your home. Eliminating practically all external light, it’s an effective all-in-one room darkening solution. Fully adjustable to suit your sleep routine, you will be able to enjoy that well-earned quality sleep you deserve.

Your window shutters let you control the light levels in your bedroom, blocking it out or letting it in as desired. Tilting the louvres can keep the room bright while retaining your privacy all the while preventing the gradual bleaching effect of the sun on your fabric and furnishings. Beyond the excellent light control that shutters provide, they add a layer between you and the outside world as additional insulation when the panels and louvres are closed which helps reduce heat loss, saving you money on your bills. Shutters are proven to be the most effective window covering for reducing heat loss in your home. This is thanks to the layer of high-quality hardwood that keeps the heat locked in and the cold locked out.

That said, there is an even more effective solution. You’ve guessed it – wooden shutters together with blinds. According to the Centre for Sustainable Energy, a blind and shutter combination will reduce heat loss by 64%. This is likely to be a low figure, too – since it’s based on roller blinds. Since the Shutter and Shade blinds have a single honeycomb cell construction, the savings are likely to be even more impressive.

Hopefully, this beginner’s guide to shutters and blackout blinds has given you plenty of information to help you decide if a Shutter and Shade combination will suit your home. However, the Shuttercraft team understand that everyone’s homes and needs are unique. Therefore, if you need any further information about blackout shutter blinds, they’d be happy to answer your questions!

Always on hand to help you choose the right shutters for your home and make the most of your space, make sure to contact Lynn and Steve Allen, your local Shuttercraft team, to arrange a free, no-obligation home visit. With Shuttercraft, you will enjoy premium, made-to-measure shutters with the benefit of an expert surveyor and fitter who will guide you through the whole process, and help you choose the perfect solution for your home.

TIME TO enjoy

With summer upon us, we all want to spend more time outdoors. Yet for many people, the onerous task of keeping the garden tidy, maintaining lawns and fences can be all too time consuming, detracting from the joy that is just being able to sit outside. We can’t wash your patio or trim your hedges (and we definitely can’t clean your barbeque!) but we can recommend ColourFence, a product that has been designed to remove one of the chores from getting your garden summer ready.

With a ColourFence, one of the most tedious, time-consuming jobs – painting your fence – disappears overnight. And that’s not just for this year, but for the next 25 years! That’s because there’s no need to paint or repair a ColourFence. It’s guaranteed not to warp, crack, shrink, rot or peel for a quarter of a century, making it one of the world's best maintenance-free fences. Did you know that Cornwall is one of the windiest counties in the country? Luckily, and of particular appeal to those living in exposed coastal and hilly areas, ColourFence can also withstand wind speeds of up to 130mph.

We hear from owner Olly, who has installed more than 1,300 fences covering the length and breadth of the Duchy: “We’ve installed

all over the county and the feedback we get from customers is amazing, but not totally surprising. In the space of a day, we can remove an old wooden fence and install a new ColourFence leaving your garden transformed – it really is a garden makeover in a day!

Testament to the great service you’ll receive from ColourFence is this review from Mr M of Truro: “I wish to thank Olly and Callum for a very good, quick and clean job with a very helpful approach. Their hard work is much appreciated and the fence is looking lovely in the sunlight today! Thanks again, nice work chaps!” A ColourFence is not only practical; it looks good, too. With a choice of different styles, decorative touches and colours the options are endless. So, whether it’s weathering storms or hiding from heatwaves, get your garden set up and summer-ready so you can sit back, relax and enjoy.

APPROACH A new

Being the second-biggest town in Cornwall after St Austell, and home to a thriving student population, it’s unsurprising that Britannia Lanes has chosen the popular maritime hub of Falmouth as the site for its newest self-store facility. And whilst there are self-storage options for people in the area already, there are none that offer the combined security, accessibility and flexibility that Britannia Lanes have managed to achieve.

The first thing to say is that all storage at the new self-store facility is indoors, which eliminates the risk of belongings being spoiled by the weather. This is reassuring for those who are moving house and need to store an entire home’s worth of possessions whilst they wait for a moving date. And for parents whose children are studying in Falmouth, it’s equally useful to know that their items can be kept safe for the summer, not to mention the added

bonus of not having to ferry it all back home when term comes to a close! This peace of mind of being protected from the weather has already garnered a great deal of interest from customers all over south and west Cornwall, even those from as far as the Lizard as there simply isn’t another self-store facility of its kind in the area!

In terms of access hours, well, it’s really a case of ‘whenever you need’. Literally. Thanks to cutting-edge access via a smartphone app, you can access your unit around the clock, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Even on Christmas Eve, if Santa needs to pop in and collect the presents, no problem! When it comes to security, the site is monitored 24 hours a day by CCTV. What’s more, all units come with a double layer of security. Each is individually alarmed, and in the highly unlikely scenario that somebody does gain access to your belongings, there are also

HOME 48 | CORNWALL LIVING
With its cutting-edge new facility in Falmouth, Britannia Lanes rewrites the rules when it comes to self-storage.
 BELOW Matt Lane

sensors inside each unit that will sense their body heat and immediately raise the alarm. So, what can you expect when it comes to capacity? In truth, there is a unit size for everybody. It could be that you’re a tradesperson in need of a place to keep your tools safe whilst on holiday, or that you have too many to keep in the van at any one time. If so, there are small units available that will suit your needs perfectly. Again, thanks to 24-hour access, it doesn’t matter whether you tend to start early or finish late, you’ll always be able to collect and drop off your tools, without having to worry about opening hours.

Similarly, for those with an entire home’s worth of belongings, there are also some very large units available that will house everything you need to store, and with the aforementioned security systems in place and the fact that the storage is inside, away from the weather, you can rest assured that everything will be present and correct when the time comes to collect it. Businesses, too, can benefit from storage at Britannia Lanes’ new self-store facility. It could be that you need space to store records, files or surplus stock.

Or, if you’re a seasonal business owner in Cornwall, for example a restaurant with seasonal outdoor furniture, having a safe space to store it all when the weather turns can be very handy indeed.

Perhaps what is most impressive about all of this, however, is the flexibility that Britannia Lanes offers its customers. Everybody has different needs; some need to store their furniture whilst they wait to exchange keys on a new property, while others need longerterm solutions. Self-storage in Falmouth with Britannia Lanes is super flexible, and works on a rolling four-week contract. There is a minimum four-week period to start with, however once those four weeks are up, you are then able to pay only for the days that you use. This means that if, for example, you are two weeks into your second four-week period, you can simply let the team know and you’ll only be charged for the two weeks used. What’s more, you can let them know on the day that you’re moving out, even on the very last day of your latest four-week period, and you won’t be billed for any more days that you’ve actually used.

With our lifestyles becoming increasingly busy by the year, flexibility has perhaps never been more important, so it’s reassuring to know that at Britannia Lanes’ new self-store facility, the service is designed to suit the customer and not the business. To find out more and book a viewing appointment, or to see the latest prices and availability, be sure to pay the website a visit.

COSYKeeping it

GreenGenUK are hot on the heels of the heating solution of the future – air source heat pumps!  ABOVE Maintain

With temperatures rising and falling throughout the year (sometimes rather unpredictably), many of us are looking at ways in which we can maintain comfortable heat levels at home, whilst keeping the energy bills in check and the impact on the planet in mind.

An air source heat pump ticks over in the background of your home and keeps the temperature at a nice, ambient level, even on the coldest days of winter. This is better for the fabric of your home as temperatures won't peak and trough, improves overall efficiency and means you can be cosy and comfortable all day long.

When you run an oil or gas boiler, it's usually in short blasts and then your home cools down when the boiler switches off. In contrast, a heat pump runs at lower temperatures more consistently to maintain a level of heat in your home. As such, a heat pump is an ideal replacement for a gas or oil boiler. Typically, a single air source unit will be installed on the outside of the home. This is then connected to a hot water tank internally and the existing central heating system. Some small upgrades may be required but overall disruption to the home is minimal. Once installed, the heat pump provides all the property's heating and hot water.

In addition, to aid customers into switching from outdated fossil fuel boilers,

the government is offering a £5,000 grant to anybody making the switch known as the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS). Domestic heating is the largest carbon emitter in your home and switching to a heat pump will generate a carbon saving in a number of tonnes. The BUS scheme comes off of the amount you pay and is open to anybody converting from a fossil fuel system.

The limited scheme runs until 2025 and works on a first-come-first-serve basis. As we move through winter, and with more price rises anticipated later in the year, switch out your boiler with an energy efficient heat pump now to start saving.

GreenGenUK, Cornwall's leading renewable heating experts, offer free site visits and bespoke proposals. GreenGen's idea is to design an efficient, cost-effective solution for your home. With no obligation quotes, their aim is to give homeowners the information needed to make an informed decision.

FOR LIVINGDesign

Helen, owner of Cotton Mills Design House in Truro is no stranger to luxury spaces. Having worked in the super yacht industry, and then in interior design for private clients, she now brings her expertise to Cornwall as owner of Cotton Mills Design House in Truro. The Design House specialises in the production of predominantly bespoke, hand-sewn curtains and window dressings as well as providing turnkey interior design projects which are very popular with both developers and holiday home owners looking for a property makeover.

Helen is self-confessed as being a minimalist at heart: “I like fresh, clean and minimal interiors, with an emphasis on functionality. Having worked on superyachts for such a long time, I had to learn how to organise and make good use of the space available, both in terms of light and storage. Especially for holiday rental properties, I believe the design needs not only to stand the test of time but to be timeless as well.

“Guests are looking for that little bit of luxury. I think where you can afford to spend a little more, making really good decisions and curating special pieces that are going

to last and are of really good quality will set your property apart. Bathrooms, for example, which are often overlooked, are worth the investment of extra consideration and perhaps a little bit more of the budget in order to create a really nice sanctuary.

“Competition can be so fierce in the holiday letting industry, especially in Cornwall. Cornwall speaks for itself in terms of marketing, it has worldwide renown. So, if you’ve got a letting property, you’ve really got to try and stand out amongst the crowd and going that extra mile with certain details and finishes can make a big difference. Guests can be very discerning and have come to expect quality. As an interior designer, I’m here to help maximise either your profit from the return of your guests, or the finishes and items that you choose so that you’re not having to replace them as often.”

GARDENINGGet into

Besides being aesthetically pleasing, plants and gardening can contribute to human health in a variety of ways, from improving mental well-being to bettering physical health. As well as enhancing our outdoor environments, plants can also contribute to happier surroundings in our homes and workplaces too.

Getting physical

Those of you who have put in regular sessions in the garden could also liken it to a gym workout, a way to relieve stress and promote self-esteem. Having regular gardening habits has been shown to improve immunity to disease and heart health, and reduce the risk of stroke and Alzheimer's. In addition to enjoying the physical activity of gardening, fresh air, and vitamin E from the sunshine can improve mood, skin, and health.

Boost your mood

Spending time outdoors in green spaces reduces mental fatigue, increases relaxation, and even improves cognitive function. Indoor plants have also been recognised to do the same things whilst improving air quality through photosynthesis and capturing these indoor pollutants. So, whilst being outside isn't always achievable when balancing a busy life, being around houseplants can provide plenty of benefits.

Creating connections

Our gardens provide us with a chance to connect with other people and nature. Gardening creates communities and provides

a place to gather with those we love. By creating a garden, you, your friends and your family can enjoy, you are also providing an environment for other small visitors too. Perhaps build grassy areas to encourage wildlife such as hedgehogs or a birdbath to encourage your feathered friends.

Here are a few suggestions from Plants of Cornwall to set you on your way to a more balanced life. The fragrance from the lavender plant is known to lower heart rate and blood pressure. Rosemary stimulates blood flow and boosts the immune system. A snake plant requires hardly any maintenance and has been shown to remove toxins from the air, while succulents can increase the humidity in a room whilst producing clean air. Being around plants can only be a positive thing. Look after your plants and they'll look after you! So, we recommend that you visit plantsofcornwall.com for more tips and advice or to see their online store and seasonal special offers.

WILD WESTCornwall

Ancient stone circles, dramatic moorland, epic surf beaches and pint-sized fishing villages — west Cornwall has arguably the most diverse and wild landscape in the county.

This far-flung region is also home to some of Cornwall’s popular visitor spots and landmarks, including St Michael’s Mount, iconic Land’s End and arty St Ives. Add a clifftop theatre, an art deco lido and a smattering of top foodie destinations and it’s easy to see why this part of Cornwall is a favourite for visitors seeking culture and adventure by the coast.

Explore the wild west and beyond, from one of Forever Cornwall’s stylish apartments, romantic coastal cottages or show-stopping beach houses. Each one of their properties comes with a host of unique features, from log-burners and hot tubs to sea-view bedrooms and private suntraps for al-fresco dining.

With some of the most spectacular beaches in the UK, the west Cornwall coast is a playground for ocean-loving families, whether that’s surfing in Gwithian, paddleboarding in St Ives, kayaking in Praa Sands or kitesurfing in Mount’s Bay. Those who prefer to stay on dry

land will find huge golden beaches, intriguing rockpools and sea caves to explore, and miles and miles of coastal footpath to wander. Or why not head inland for breathtaking hikes across heather moorland? Most of Forever Cornwall’s properties are within an easy stroll of the beach too, making them the perfect base for all of your coastal adventures.

We all know that holidays aren’t the same without our four-legged friends, which is why the Forever Cornwall team are proud to say that most of their retreats are dog friendly, too. Whether you’re looking for a romantic hideaway for two or a big house to fill with friends and family, you’ll be sure to find the perfect retreat with Forever Cornwall.

Set within 150 acres of countryside, incorporating three lakes, this multi-generational, action-packed nature and wellness retreat offers the ultimate enjoyment for young couples, families, or celebratory groups of all shapes and sizes.

It’s a site that more and more prospective holiday home owners are falling in love with, especially those who visit regularly and are seeking something a little more permanent.

Effortlessly stylish and surrounded by countryside, with some perched on the banks of the lakes, each barn provides a space that’s designed for time spent together. Picture living spaces with sink-into sofas, cosy bedrooms for snuggling down in, deckings perfect for gazing up at the starry night sky.

Water sports are on offer all year round with children booked on to the FlowRider or Aqua Park after school, or surfers wanting to practice their skills on the guaranteed wave. Plus, the water sports team is also known for their Flow Shows at peak times, demonstrating their daredevil skills and stunts to spectators who

will kick back with a drink or a meal – it’s great family entertainment.

There’s also a beach café down at the lake for those that would rather spectate than get wet, and the indoor pool with sauna and steam room is perfect for those looking for something a little less action packed. For couples and groups of friends looking for relaxation, a trip to the spa for a massage or treatment is just the thing, or maybe mum needs a couple of hours to herself after a busy day.

So, whether it’s taking a dip in a hot tub on the roof top terrace, breakfast on the decking overlooking the countryside or sitting with a book and a cooling drink as you listen to the sounds of the lake, there is a barn for everyone – ranging from two and three-bedroom options, right through to those with four and and even six!

When the day’s end finally rolls around, Retallack’s exceptional accommodation provides a welcome and luxurious retreat. And whether you’re choosing to stay there yourself, or to let it out to guests, what we’re sure you’ll find is that a holiday home purchase here is an investment that yields dividends well beyond the monetary.

ESCAPEA unique

With this in mind, Emma Wiggin, New Property Development Consultant at Carbis Bay Holidays, explains a little more about why this small nook on Cornwall’s spectacular coastline differs from other destinations in the county, and why it is a superb place to invest in a holiday home.

“St Ives is, in many ways, unique” Emma muses. “Beautiful, thriving, and most unusually for Cornish seaside spots, busy almost all year round! Holidaymaker footfall in the area is high not just for the peak summer weeks, but for the shoulder months and winter season too. This is unsurprising, given the area is a haven for dog-walkers, couples, groups of friends, and countless others who purposely choose to visit outside of the school holiday season.

“In 2022, during the peak summer holiday weeks, we enjoyed occupancy rates of over 98% in our 170+ self-catering holiday homes in Carbis Bay and St Ives. This trend continued into the autumn and impressively we also had an occupancy rate of over 96% throughout September, and a 94% occupancy rate for October half term – incredible considering the post-staycation-boom era we are in.

“The popularity of the region looks set to continue into 2023, with Easter, June, September and October half term all showing higher occupancy levels than at the same

point last year, despite the recent cost of living pressures. With this continued customer demand for accommodation in the area, we are looking to further expand our portfolio of holiday properties, particularly along the Gwithian and Godrevy coastline, where people are increasingly looking to stay.

“Recently added to our portfolio is Beachcroft, a fantastic eco-friendly home sleeping ten people, situated in the heart of Carbis Bay. It has already achieved an incredible 19 weeks of bookings for 2023, and one booking for 2024, despite only being on the website for a few short weeks – testament to the demand we are currently seeing, and the national marketing exposure we offer as an agency.”

If you already have a holiday home in or around St Ives and Carbis Bay, Emma and her team would be delighted to offer a free, no-obligation proposal of the income and bookings you might expect. Thinking of buying? This area offers the perfect location to invest in a holiday property, not least because of its massive income potential. Emma is on hand to offer advice, whatever stage you are at with your holiday letting journey.

The ultimate guide from Cornwall Living

Cornwall's vibrant and eclectic contemporary art scene is flourishing. It's unique, in that the Duchy has a long history of artists who have made their mark on Cornwall and beyond. Often inspired by the county's dramatic coastal scenery and verdant spaces, each artist's interpretation is as unique and diverse as the landscape itself. This guide aims to bring you a flavour of what makes Cornwall's art scene so special, from its well-known artists and creatives to some lesser-known gems.

First we pay a visit to Padstow Galley, (page 71) where flora, fauna, coast and countryside very much informs the gallery's curation. As an independent gallery, celebrating its fifth anniversary, this is a prime example of how galleries across Cornwall are able to support and showcase its artists and makers.

It's then on to The Jackson Foundation (page 72); an ambitious, multi-awardwinning, carbon negative art space celebrating and championing both the arts and the natural world. Founders Kurt Jackosn and his wife Caroline wanted this to be a place open to all and so it's free to the public, creating a bridge between public and private art centres.

Whistlefish (page 74) also embodies the notion of making art available to all. With a wide range of artists and illustrators on its roster, its range of affordable cards and prints means that anyone can own a little piece of Cornish art.

We meet sea-life artist Nigel Kirkham (page 75), also known as Kirksy, where we deep-dive into the inspiration for his vivid artworks painted onto reclaimed surfaces, such as surfboards and repurposed canvases. Art of a different kind, but drawing on a similar subject matter, graces the walls of Waves Surf Art Gallery (page 78). Owner Mike Lacey, is one of the Duchy's leading ocean photographers, often immersing himself in the waves themselves in order to capture the perfect shot. In celebration of ten years of success, Mike, along with three friends and his brother, will be undertaking an incredible 200-mile ocean paddle to raise money and awareness for Surfers against Sewage and the mental health charity, CALM.

…enjoy the art inspiration!

Art on the Lizard

Situated on the timeless Trelowarren Estate, in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Lizard Art is a co-operative of 14 artists hidden away in a beautiful courtyard of ancient buildings. The Stable Yard Gallery, which is open Wednesday to Sunday 11am –3pm, continues to be a hub of activity as the artists display a new exhibition three times a year, in spring, summer and autumn. There’s always something new for the returning visitor to appreciate and enjoy the ambience of the surroundings.

After a scenic drive through the estate, an eclectic mix of various styles and techniques are presented in the spacious, airy gallery, encompassing representational and abstract paintings; from exciting seascapes that capture stormy weather to gentle water colours that embrace the warmth of summer. Housing an eclectic collection of originals, prints and cards, the gallery is run

by the artists themselves, which gives them the opportunity to share their enthusiasm about their own work and those of their colleagues, a real highlight for visitors keen to know more.

Amongst the collection you’ll also find work from the gallery’s associate craft members, which include gorgeous serpentine works, fascinating ceramics, glass, textiles and jewellery. For 2023 they are planning an extra early Spring Retrospective Exhibition of a dear friend and member of Lizard Art who recently passed away: Janet Judge Retrospective will run from 18th March –2nd April, with a private view n 18th March, 2pm – 4pm. 2023 Member’s Exhibitions will be held from 5th April – 4th June, 7th June –27th August and 30th August – 29th October.

Inspired by Cornish landscapes

Located in Wadebridge’s pedestrian central shopping area, Polmorla Walk, Wave 7 Gallery is home to a wide range of stunning paintings to suit all tastes and budgets. Passionate about the artists whose pieces she stocks, gallery owner Plum Mead has created a gentle, calm and inspiring space from which to select your next piece of art.

Oils and acrylics feature everything you will see in the landscape of north Cornwall – sunshine on the beaches, the energy of the ocean, the weather ravaging the moors.

Latest exhibitions at The Jackson Foundation

The Jackson Foundation has reopened with parallel exhibitions focussed on the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, the charity that saves lives at sea. In Kurt Jackson’s RNLI Cornwall, Jackson – one of the UK’s foremost contemporary landscape artists –celebrates the lifesaving efforts of the RNLI through an ambitious new series of painting, installation and mixed media work. The second exhibition, The RNLI’s Cornish Lifeboat Stations offers a fascinating insight into the RNLI’s work in Cornwall over the last 200 years as viewed through a camera lens. Featuring work from Jack Lowe’s ongoing project to photograph the UK’s lifeboat crews using technology from the 1860’s and Nigel Millard’s stunning action shots of lifeboats in action, this exhibition also features archive material, educational information and a collection of RNLI collection boxes from 1895 to present. Both exhibitions run until August 19th.

Among these works of art, you’ll find beautiful, delicate ceramics, an excellent selection of silver jewellery, wooden and glass pieces and cards for all occasions, with recycled and natural materials featuring in the three-dimensional pieces. A talented artist in her own right, Plum’s contemporary painted mirrors are available directly from her in Wadebridge and are also stocked in other Cornish galleries. CONNECTIONS

As Padstow Gallery celebrates its fifth anniversary, it is spreading the joy of art ownership one piece at a time.

If you’ve been lucky enough to meet Padstow Gallery’s founder, Liz Francis, you will know that she is passionate about showcasing the best of British contemporary art and artists: "I take immense pride in sourcing original artwork directly from our treasured selection of artists and makers. Fundamentally, we are about connections: connections to our artists, makers, people and the inspirational environment around us. We are a truly independent art gallery where everything we curate is handmade, from paintings to ceramics, jewellery to linocut prints, and more. I love what I do, the people that I meet, and the artists that I represent.”

Being based in Cornwall has influenced Padstow Gallery's style. The concept of 'edges' and 'boundaries', a celebration of the flora and fauna of the countryside, and the ruggedness of the Cornish coastline, where land meets the sky all inform the curation. "I love it when an artist takes a view and makes it their own. As someone who is not an artist (I can only take credit for the emulsion on the gallery walls!), I am captivated by the entire creative process. It excites me to catch a glimpse of that moment in time through the artist's eyes, just through marks on a canvas or board," says Liz.

While Liz’s talents lay with the vision and curation of the space, she is quick to credit the gallery’s success to the wonderful team of friends who help run the show with her, her amazing customers and, of course, to the incredibly talented artists who continue to support this little venture. “I simply couldn’t do it without everyone, and it is a joy to be celebrating our landmark fifth anniversary after what has been an exceptionally challenging time for all,” concludes Liz.

Cornwall Living readers are invited to join Padstow Gallery’s celebrations on Saturday 8th April 2023, where guests will be able to meet the makers and enjoy a glass of bubbly or two! Further information on the latest exhibitions and events can be found on the website or join the gallery’s mailing list for regular email updates. As Liz says: “We hope to see you soon.”

This spring, you can Buy One Get One Half Price on prints and canvases both online and in Whistlefish stores. You can find Whistlefish galleries in Falmouth, Fowey, Dartmouth, Looe, Newquay, Padstow, Plymouth, Salcombe, St Ives and Truro. If you can’t make it to a gallery in person, why not shop online at www. whistlefish.com?

For Lyn, a passionate young artist, painting was the dream she made into a business reality. Ambitious, with a passion for coast, florals and animals, she has lovingly grown Whistlefish since 1997 to become one of Cornwall’s most well-loved card and art brands, now with 11 shops in the south west.

After opening her first shop in St Ives, Lyn found that it was hard to keep up with demand and keep the shop well stocked, so she started seeking out other local artists to print their work. This was a huge success and allowed Whistlefish to begin to flourish into the company it is today, providing a platform to many up-and-coming UK artists. With so many talented names in the Whistlefish collection, we discovered some of the team’s favourite artists whose popularity is reflected both in store and online.

Iris Clelford

With a love for oils, Iris’s paintings are full of vibrancy, depth, and light with subjects that sit easy on the eye. Based in Cornwall, the coastline and florals feature heavily in her collection – beautiful moments of colour to hang in your home.

Hannah Cole

Brighton-based artist Hannah is inspired by her frequent travels to the West Country, as well as the everyday seaside walks around

Brighton and beyond. Her paintings depict the charm of Cornish harbours and bring back happy memories of beachside holidays, with her ever-present wistful dog gazing out to sea.

Simon Harmer

A creative illustrator, Simon is a master of hand-drawn, linear images in an almost continuous line, giving a fluid, organic style. A modern home will be well suited to one of these pieces, with the minimal style brought to life with a single splash of colour.

The Whistlefish Studio

The talented in-studio artists at Whistlefish live and breathe life by the sea, and that’s reflected in the variety of location-based art, each with its own style. This season, some of the team’s favourites include the bold ‘South West Lino’ and summery ‘Dream Views’ collections.

Each piece of art is printed and framed by hand in Whistlefish’s studio in Cornwall, guaranteeing quality, longevity and stunning reproduction.

INSPIRED BY

THE OCEAN

Cornwall’s amazing sea-life is the catalyst for Nigel Kirkham’s highly detailed artworks.

Having painted as a hobby since his early art-school training, artist Nigel Kirkham, or Kirksy as he is known amongst the art world, cites his move to Trebarwith on the north Cornish coast as the inspiration he needed to transition from a long-standing business career to painting full-time.

Working mainly with acrylics, his preferred medium, Nigel specialises in surfboard and canvas art, upcycling and renovating old, end-of-life surfboards and some framed canvas paintings, which would otherwise be heading to landfill. His work has a distinct pop art feel to it, from the use of vibrant colours and high-detailing. The surfboard's shape also lends itself perfectly to the flowing themes of the art he creates, giving a fluidity, dynamism and energy to them.

Subject inspiration comes from the sea and coastline, with a focus on native sea life that can be found on Cornish shores, including mackerel, gurnard, jellyfish, octopus, lobster, crab, squid and more. The works have a strong environmental theme to them, which is particularly evident in his surfboard art. Nigel sources most of his boards from SurfsUp in Polzeath, taking the school’s end-of-season boards – those that are damaged and beyond repair – in exchange for a donation to the North Cornwall Food Bank. He renovates

each board before prepping and starting a new piece.

For some of his canvas work, he upcycles old canvases and frames, bringing them back to life with new artwork. An example of which is 'The Great Escape’; an artwork showing an orange octopus ‘escaping’ from the canvas and over the frame. This was originally an old print of several ballerinas, bought by his partner Daisy in the 1990s!

When not painting, Nigel likes to relax by kayak fishing off the coast at Port Gaverne and Port Isaac. He lives with Daisy, and their two wire-haired Dachshunds, Rigsby and Doris at their home in Trebarwith.

To see more or for commission enquiries, message Nigel on @kirksyart on Instagram, or give him a call.

FOR CHARITYStanding up

Celebrating a decade at Waves Gallery in Porthleven, Mike Lacey looks to exciting new challenges set for the year ahead.

Looking back on the past ten years, Mike shares with us a reflection on his time with Waves Gallery: "What a journey it’s been from the start to now. I remember being nervous the day we opened and had no idea if anyone would be interested in my photography. Ten years on, hundreds of swims into the cold Cornish waves all year around have paid off. I absolutely love what I do, from time spent in the sea to hours sorting through my images; I’m always trying to create something new like the two coffee table books we have, or the children’s book based on the photo I took the day before Coral was born, ‘Cornish Heart’. Over the last few years our kitchen splashbacks have been really popular and I’m currently working on a coffee table idea which is really exciting.

My photography started from my love of skateboarding, and once I was surfing I naturally wanted to document the waves. Last year I created our own skateboard with my photography, which was so nice to do since skateboarding was (and still is) a huge part of my life; they skate really well and also make beautiful wall art pieces.”

Now celebrating ten years at Waves Gallery, Mike has plans to stand-up paddle around Cornwall in June with brother Rich Lacey, local entrepreneur Kelvin Batt, and Sam and Will Boex, owners of Flexi Hex in Porthleven. Spanning 200 miles from Plymouth to Bude, the paddle will raise money and awareness for Surfers against Sewage and the mental health charity, CALM. You can follow the journey via the hashtag #paddle4oceanmind. The paddle will take about ten days and there will also be a live tracker and hopefully an opportunity for people to join a section of the Paddle from Poldhu to Porthleven. “We are all making our boards out of wood which is an added extra challenge before we get to the start line,” says Mike. “Thank you everyone who has supported Waves Gallery over the years. We couldn't have done it without you!”

A feast for THE SENSES

Words by Jude Kereama

Despite working in very different mediums, chef Jude Kereama and Cornwall-based artist, Zee van Gils, find commonality in their approach to creativity.

Regular readers of Cornwall Living will by now be familiar with Jude Kereama, owner and Head Chef at Kota and Kota Kai. These two restaurants on Porthleven’s harbour head have garnered a significant following over the years of both locals who love Jude’s approach to Cornish produce, and visitors who come to Cornwall to experience its incredible culinary scene. But success as a restaurateur is about more than just the food, although it is obviously an important factor! It is as much about presentation, and I think we have all by now heard the phrase ‘we eat with our eyes’. Jude’s approach to hospitality is very much geared towards appealing to our need for beauty in our surroundings, particularly here in Cornwall.

FOODIE 80 | CORNWALL LIVING

The dishes that he and his team deliver to guests' tables are meticulously put together, with everything as beautiful to behold as it is delicious to eat. But it’s not just his food that is dressed to impress. So, too, are the walls of each restaurant, and only last year did we catch up with resident artist at Kota, Maxine Greer, about her creative collaboration with Jude. Her colour-rich likenesses of Cornish marine creatures reflect the changing seasonality of the ingredients Jude and his team use, and the combination of art and food provides diners with a much more immersive experience as soon as they cross the restaurant’s threshold.

With this in mind, we were excited to hear from Jude that he has been working on a similar collaboration in his other restaurant, Kota Kai, this time with Zee van Gils. Keen to learn more, we ask Zee how the collaboration first came about. “I met Jude a few years ago just before Covid hit, through one of my friends, Tegen. One morning, I took a bunch of original pieces over to the restaurant for him to see, and he loved my art! Jude is such a genuinely kind person and to me, his food looks like edible art, so for him to say he likes my work was a lovely compliment.”

Unfortunately, the Covid-19 pandemic put a temporary end to Jude and Zee’s conversation. But when things began to return to normal, says Zee, “I got in touch to see if he’d be interested in having a selection of my work for display at Kota Kai.”

Fast-forward to now and Zee’s work can be found on proud display in the restaurant, which itself occupies a central position overlooking the beautiful vista of Porthleven’s harbour.

“The central setting, with its large windows overlooking the harbour, is nothing less than epic,” says Zee. “It’s such an iconic town with an incredible history and character. Having the fishing boats there, an amazing surf spot around the corner, old pubs and locally owned shops really gives the wholesome ‘Cornish’ feeling. I think my art brings in the often-wild elements that the restaurant is surrounded by, and ties it all together quite nicely.”

nature. In fact, as Zee puts it, “I would describe Jude as an artist, too”. She commends his attention to every detail, to the colour, texture, flavour and composition of each dish. “How can it be anything other than art? Preparing beautiful food is a way to express creativity and connect with others. That is what I do too, just with a different medium. I love that Jude’s menus are infused with influences from different parts of the world, too, as this is certainly something I try to achieve in my own work.”

Jude agrees. “I love Zee’s work and how it fits in with the restaurant here at

harbour that we have from every table reflects

Jude agrees. “I love Zee’s work and how it fits in with the restaurant here at Kota Kai. The magnificent views of the Porthleven harbour that we have from every table reflects beautifully with Zee’s art on the walls. All of her work is eye-catching and people are often drawn to them, taking their time to study and admire the pieces.

“Zee and I share the same free spirit and ethos,” he continues. “Particularly in the way her travels, and natural surroundings, influence her colour palette and forms for her artwork. I have to say that we are a great match in Kota Kai, and it’s a real pleasure to have her work on our walls.”

As well as great art, Jude and Zee share a real appreciation for food, the ocean and

Zee regularly updates the work on display in Kota Kai. Guests will often find that they simply cannot leave without one of them, and so there appears a gap on the wall that Zee is tasked to fill. “Sometimes I don’t have suitable artwork available to fill an empty slot, at which point I create something that complements the current selection.”

Going back to Jude’s approach to presentation, and what he has achieved with both his food and his collaboration with Zee, is an experience that engages more than just our taste buds. From the creative flair that’s evident on every plate, to the views across the harbour and the sea air gently wafting through the windows, to Zee’s whorling depictions of Cornwall’s natural beauty, a meal at Kota Kai is a veritable feast for the senses.

FLAVOURS

Overlooking Polzeath beach, The Cracking Crab is a seaside restaurant with the best view of the surf, serving everything from light bites to seafood platters and all the bits in between. Open for lunch, dinner, teas, coffees, and plenty of ice cream throughout the week, The Cracking Crab is a family friendly and family run restaurant –the sister to The Winking Prawn in Salcombe.

Wander inside and enjoy the eclectic interiors, featuring local artwork and a combination of cosy booths and tables – perfect for groups of friends, families, and couples, whether you’re popping in for a quick cup of tea and a brownie (or two) or celebrating a special occasion over dinner.

As the name might suggest, the menu focuses largely on seafood, drawing on the wonderful local produce that the team are lucky to have close by. However, they also try to provide something for everyone. So, if a fish feast isn’t quite your vibe they also serve juicy West Country steaks off the grill and the bar is always fully stocked with chilled craft beers, ciders and wine – including their very own bespoke cider, created

in partnership with a local brewery. Classic foodie favourites include Fruits de Mer and Popcorn Shrimp in the best of Cornish surf style. They have a small selection of gluten-free and vegetarian options available too, and while the size of the kitchen makes it hard for them to stray too far from the menu, the team will do everything they can to adapt a chosen dish if needed. New this season in the garden, the original american air stream will be offering small, informal, no-fuss seafood street food to have in the garden or to take away.

In short, The Cracking Crab can be whatever you want it to be; fun for the whole family (including the dog), a hotspot for a leisurely lunch watching the surf, a resting place for a cup of tea after a walk along the coast path, or an awesome place to watch the sun setting over sundowners before supper.

A day to

REMEMBER

The Isles of Scilly are just 28 miles off the coast of Cornwall and are officially recognised as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, rich in things to see and do. Spending even just one day on the Isles of Scilly is an experience that you will never forget, and we’ve come up with a few possibilities for your next Scillonian adventure.

FAMILY DAY OUT

A day spent on the Isles of Scilly is an adventure that the whole family will love. Head out on a rockpool safari, hop on a bike or golf buggy, or enjoy a family beach day with a difference!

FOODIE EXPERIENCE

A visit to the islands isn’t complete without tasting some of Scilly’s fresh local produce, from seafood and wine, to ice cream and fudge.

WILDLIFE ADVENTURE

Wildlife spotting opportunities start the moment you step on board the Scillonian III and continue when you reach the islands. Dolphins, seals and rare birds are regular favourites.

DOG-FRIENDLY SCILLY

The islands are famously dog friendly – and so is the Isles of Scilly Travel team – so there is no need to leave your four-legged friend at home.

A WALKER’S PARADISE

With five inhabited islands to explore and mile upon mile of coastal paths, tracks and beaches, the islands truly are a walker’s paradise. What’s more, the day trip fares start at as little as £35 per person for a day return to these special islands.

Set sail from Penzance and soak up the spectacular sight of the Cornish coastline, spotting landmarks like the world-renowned open air Minack Theatre, and keep your eyes peeled for whales, dolphins and other wildlife along the way!

Skybus is the fastest year-round service, flying to and from the Isles of Scilly, giving you more time to explore the islands. The journey takes just 20 minutes from Land’s End Airport and offers the unique perspective of the islands from the air.

Or why not experience both Skybus and Scillonian III in a single break? Fly out to the Isles of Scilly, then sail back. Flying out cuts down your journey time, giving you more time for exploring. Sailing back into Penzance is a relaxed way to end your trip, looking out for sea life and enjoying the views of the Cornish coast.

SPRING into spring

Brush

After months of dreary weather and dark mornings, it’s perfectly natural to be excited about the arrival of spring and to look forward to those hot summer days and balmy nights. However, adjusting your wardrobe to the unpredictable forecasts of March and April can be tricky. At Whitegoose, they talk about essentials – fail safes – those items of clothing that are the foundation pieces of any wardrobe. Here are some tips for the season ahead.

Try teaming a lightweight blazer with a colourful shirt and straight denim jeans. An oversized shirt is a year-round staple and will fit most sizes, leaving the collar unbuttoned for a relaxed, casual feel. Worn with your favourite jeans or trousers, accessorise with a statement piece of jewellery and you’re ready to hit the urban streets or that favourite country pub. Look out for fine knits in gorgeous ice cream shades too.

At Whitegoose in Wadebridge the team have a stunning collection of sweaters in

an array of rainbow colours starting from as little as £25. For a little bit of French chic, they have a great selection of Breton striped sweaters and tops – always a classic staple item for any self-respecting spring wardrobe. For the coming season they’ll also be stocking a selection of super comfortable trousers in a range of spring and summer colours which are always extremely popular with their loyal customers.

Do pay them a visit at their boutique in Wadebridge, where you’ll find a fabulous collection of affordable, individual clothing and jewellery – internationally sourced but exclusively for you. They very much look forward to seeing you soon, to kit you out for your re-emergence!

DIGITALKeeping it

The postponement of Making Tax Digital (MTD) for income tax until April 2026 (and later for limited companies and partnerships) has been well publicised and subject to a vast amount of scrutiny. Whilst this temporary postponement may have been a welcome relief for those not yet keeping digital records, there are a number of advantages from transitioning to an online bookkeeping software system that could benefit your business in more ways than you might first think.

Time saver

In the majority of cases, bookkeeping without using online bookkeeping software is a very manual and repetitive process. Most online bookkeeping software systems utilise technologies to automate those time consuming, repetitive tasks, thus providing significant efficiency benefits whilst reducing inaccuracies through mitigating the issues of human error. For example, you can: set up automatic bank feeds which allow you to

download all bank transactions; automatically process your supplier invoices; implement 'rules' for recurring entries; automate routine journal entries; and create sales invoices and statements of account for more efficient cash collection.

User friendly

One of the most important benefits for business owners is that you do not need to be an accountant to use most online bookkeeping software. There is generally a short learning curve, and a lot of support from the provider is available as well as support from your accountant.

Monitor your performance

Manual bookkeeping, usually done once a year, can be a labour-intensive task involving the collation of data that is out-of-date. With continuous computerised bookkeeping you have the ability to run accurate, meaningful reports with real-time information, enabling you to accurately monitor the performance

LIFESTYLE 98 | CORNWALL LIVING
With a little help from the expert team at RRL, we explore the five key benefits of using online bookkeeping software.
Words by Jade Beech

of your business at the click of a button. This enables you to make agile and proactive (as opposed to reactive) decision making.

Back it up

The majority of leading bookkeeping software providers are now using cloud-based systems, meaning that wherever you are, all you require is a device with internet access to be able to log on and access your data. This also enables your accountant to access your data at any time throughout the year to assist with any queries you may have and provide proactive.

Most leading bookkeeping software providers will also have a mobile app, meaning you can log on, upload documents and monitor financial performance on the go.

Digital storage

Paperwork, including receipts from retailers, can be scanned and stored within the software via an app, or PDF attachments received via email can simply be dragged into the system. Digitally stored records not only remove the need to store all of your paperwork in files and boxes, which take up valuable space and can easily be misplaced, but give you ease of access, so you can easily search for invoices on the software and view, reprint and resend if necessary.

Digital record storage will save you time, space and money. This also has significant sustainability benefits, reducing the need for unnecessary printing and paper usage.

Many businesses have already transitioned to online bookkeeping software; however, they are possibly not fully utilising all of the benefits on offer. For example, bank feeds –connections that allow you to automatically import transactions from your bank directly into your bookkeeping software, ready for you to reconcile each day. This eliminates the need to manually post bank transactions (saving time) and reduces the risk of human error. Also, many businesses have multiple arms but do not accurately track the financial performance of each one. Utilising ‘departments’ within your bookkeeping software will enable you allocate each transaction to the relevant trade with ease. You would then have the ability to run departmental reports to show an individual profit and loss account for each one, a very valuable tool for assessing performance when making financial and business decisions.

If you would like to discuss any of the above in more detail or require assistance in selecting the right bookkeeping software for you and your business, RRL would be very happy to assist.

Cause for

A CARD

Giving back has always been a big part of greeting card and art company Whistlefish. Since opening their doors in St Ives in 1997, Whistlefish has raised funds for a variety of charities across many different activities, from card sales to gift donations.

EXPERIENCE

DISCOVER MORE...

Whistlefish shops can be found in Padstow, St Ives, Falmouth, Truro, Looe, Dartmouth, Salcombe, Barbican, Newquay and Fowey. Don’t worry, if you can’t make it in person why not shop the full range online?

With greetings cards at the heart of Whistlefish, supporting others – by sending someone words of encouragement and care –is a fundamental part of thinking within the Cornwall-based brand, and with your help, they have already contributed over £97,000 to the improvement of many lives across the county and country.

This year, Whistlefish has launched 1 Good Cause – a commitment to ensure every card you buy also automatically makes a donation to a good cause. 1p from every sale goes towards that month’s chosen charity, both online and in any of their shops across Cornwall.

Whistlefish are aiming to help causes in Cornwall, around the UK and beyond, in everything from horses to

hospices. If you run a charity that focuses on wildlife, environmental concerns, youth development, family and children, healthcare or anything in between, they want to hear from you.

It’s a really simple way to raise funds and the team at Whistlefish will be there to support you along the way. Past charities include Cornwall Wildlife Trust, MumsAid and The Prince’s Trust to name but a few. No matter how big or small, simple or unusual, you can apply for 1 Good Cause funding from Whistlefish by visiting www. whistlefish.com/1goodcause.

Make a difference with your greetings this year and choose cards from Cornwall that support a good cause. What’s more, you can buy any 10 cards for £10 online and in stores!
