f you’re after some fun in the sun this year, then why not put Cornwall and one of its worldrenowned festivals on your holiday calendar. Rosie Cattrell has been on a whistle-stop tour of some of her favourites from page 10, experiencing the heady sights and sounds of clifftop revelry, eclectic weekends and woodland wonderment. Once here, you’ll be in need of a special place to stay, and there is certainly no shortage of luxury accommodation in the Duchy. From stunning hotels to cosy cottages, marvellous manor houses, chic seaside retreats and coastal inns you’ll be spoiled for choice (from page 20). Cornwall offers a coastal paradise for all to enjoy with world-class surf breaks at every turn, so why not book a lesson with Global Boarders (page 40) who will have you up and riding in no time. For those looking for a gentler holiday pace, the county plays host to a wealth of artistic talent with glass fusion artist Jo Downs (page 17) and potter Sally Tully (page 43) as just a couple of prime examples. Don’t forget our luxury property showcase (from page 46) that sees us team up with award-winning estate agent Rohrs and Rowe to bring you the finest homes on the Cornish market. We hope to see you in Cornwall very soon… …happy reading!

Around Cornwall in 38 churns

A ships jug from A remarkable and very unusual art auction has been launched to raise funds for Cornish healthcare charity Cornwall Hospice Care. ‘Around Cornwall in 38 Churns’ has been devised by Sue Dennett of Newquay who also wanted to showcase the county’s talented artists and stunning locations. The project is being supported by Rodda’s Creamery, Visit Cornwall and David Lay Auctions and will culminate in the grand finale of the churn auction at Truro Cathedral in September. Artists from across Cornwall have been given a churn, kindly donated by Rodda’s Creamery, and have offered their talent and time to decorate each one in their own particular style. They include famous names such as Kurt Jackson, Anthony Frost and Dick Twinney. Each will be featured at venues around Cornwall throughout the summer. Nick Rodda is the Managing Director of Rodda’s Creamery: “Churns are not only iconic but a beautiful shape and

Susy Ward’s Maritime series In her Redruth studio you will see wheel thrown stoneware ships mugs, rum tots and jugs with sea tone glazes plus a stunning array of tableware including her range of coffee mugs which come in three different clays and glazes. The dark clay is treated to a deep blue green like the sea itself. In contrast, the white clay floats in the shallows turquoise and luscious. Susy is in her studio most days, and is happy to show you around or take a commission, although booking an appointment is best.

I think they lend themselves to this charity project. This is a brilliant idea and showcases our heritage while also giving a nod to the current day talents of our local artists. Rodda’s is part of the tapestry of Cornwall and we’ve always worked with local charities.” Sue Dennett is the Chair of Cornwall Hospice Care’s Newquay Fundraising Group and has been involved for the last 38 years: “The churns look amazing and will I’m sure, prove a big attraction at the many venues where they’re being displayed through the summer months. We’ll then complete the auction on Wednesday 21st September at Truro Cathedral.”

If you want to have a couple of hours either on the wheel or hand building the happy and relaxed atmosphere in my studio is the place to be, perfect for a birthday present. If, however, you want to learn to throw, Susy can take you on that journey.

he world has felt pretty quiet lately. Cancellations and postponements of the festivals, live music events and cultural celebrations we so looked forward to, while necessary, certainly put a dampener on our hopes for the summers of 2020 and 2021, and the road from that very first lockdown has certainly felt like a long one. However, with restrictions easing and the proper precautions in place, this year is well on its way to pulling an absolute showstopper out of the bag, and Cornwall is right there amongst it all. rom local celebrations of food and culture to one of the biggest music festivals in the , we’d like to take you on a journey through the light strung trees to some of our favourite Cornish festivals as the sun comes up on the summer of 2022. Home to a wealth of cultural arts and a fiercely proud heritage, here in Cornwall we love to celebrate our local traditions and histories, and the almouth International ea hanty estival is an excellent example of how we like to showcase local talent whilst welcoming friends from all over the world in celebration. ounded in 200 with a mission to keep the history of the sea and the days of sail alive, the cobbled streets of almouth’s historic town will once again find themselves filled with the rousing sound of sea shanties, songs of the sea and Cornish songs, all performed live throughout the weekend. pread across from riday 17th to unday 19th June, and featuring pop-up bars and music stages throughout almouth town, you’ll find shanty groups drawn from across the , Brittany, Holland, pain, Canada and Ireland who’ve come together in celebration of all things nautical.

Jon Rowley

On the north coast of Cornwall you’ll find another Cornish town that plays host to an annual celebration of art, food and music; the Rock Oyster estival. et in the stunning grounds of Dinham House, and overlooking the Camel Estuary, this particular festival celebrates one local delicacy in particular, as the name suggests. Each year thousands of oysters are eaten as visitors and locals alike celebrate the famous quality of Cornish seafood. With cookery demonstrations, children’s entertainment and even a ‘shucking’ oyster shell opening) competition, taking place from 29th to 1st July, this year’s events are hosted by Jack tein, who has gathered famed foodie names like Rick Stein and Rosemary hrager to share their culinary expertise. Meanwhile acts like Laura Mvula, Happy Mondays and Passenger are sure to have you up and dancing like it’s 2019. What could be a better way to mark the fifth year of The Great Estate festival than with a special four-day celebration over the ueen’s Platinum Jubilee weekend elf-proclaimed as ‘the most rambunctious garden f te’, this year’s celebrations took place once more at the charming corrier House, and boasted headline acts at tage on the Green such as Manic treet Preachers, Black Grape and Ibibio ound Machine, while fresh new talent made waves on the BBC Music introducing stage. While frequenters to the festival were sure to find familiar sounds, there was no shortage of new curiosities to happen upon this year, including the new Earth Roots world music stage.

t her recently opened gallery near Ascot, glass artist Jo Downs is offering a free design service for clients with that beautiful bespoke piece in mind. The gallery is full of works to inspire you, all created by Jo and her team, and her friendly gallery staff are on hand to guide you through the bespoke process, from first chat to final creation. rom shimmering chandeliers to wall-mounted works or spectacular architectural installations, Jo is known for creating uniquely beautiful designs for clients across the globe. She has been commissioned to make work for luxury hotels and elegant private homes from Dubai to New Zealand, and loves the challenge of creating custom designs for those with an eye for something special. “Here at the gallery we can talk clients through colours, textures, and various design options,” says Gallery Manager, Sarah Downs. “Our dedicated planning area allows us to lay out and draw up ideas, so that clients can play with scale and see what’s possible. Then we can template the design onto large

format paper, so the client can try their unique design out at home before Jo works her magic. It’s a completely free and personal service, because bespoke work is a personal thing.” Jo also offers a full installation service for larger works, by arrangement with the gallery. “Glass is fragile and needs handling correctly,” says Sarah, “so clients want to know that the work they’ve commissioned will be put safely in place by experienced professionals. Our inhouse team are experts and offer complete peace of mind.” The gallery also runs regular workshops for groups of up to eight people, where you can learn the art of glass fusing yourself with studio professionals. Each session includes a demonstration, followed by the opportunity to make pieces including fused glass hangings, coasters, framed artworks and seasonal decorations. Workshops are exclusive to Jo’s Sunningdale gallery with limited availability, and can be booked via the website.

O

wners of holiday homes in Cornwall will have noticed a significant up-tick in bookings in recent years, which is perhaps unsurprising. More and more holidaymakers are realising that with Cornwall on their doorstep, there’s little need to hop aboard a plane and fly their way across the globe to enjoy sun, sea and sand, and everything else that a classic holiday abroad brings with it. Cornwall’s culinary scene, for example, is up there with the finest in the . or explorers, the dynamic coastlines of the north and south, not to mention the endless miles of rolling countryside in between, are paradise, and when you add to this the world-renowned gardens and attractions that Cornwall is home to – the Eden Project, ost Gardens of Heligan, and the Minack Theatre, to name just a few it’s really no surprise that the Cornish staycation is proving so popular. With this in mind, demand for luxury self-catering breaks has never been higher, something the team at Elite West Holidays are acutely aware of. pecialising in exclusive private homes for groups of all sizes, Elite West Holidays are always at the end of a phone call and happy to discuss how they might be able to make your property work for you. perating with a superb, hand-selected portfolio of luxury properties in the north

Cornwall area, at the core of the business is the understanding that, at the end of the day, it’s your property. We never forget that, says company Director, James. Because we’re totally independent, we can be both nimble and flexible, tailoring our service to suit you. As an owner, you can choose from a Bookings nly or ully Managed service. The ully Managed service includes quality housekeeping, laundry services and everything else you might need to offer an exceptional stay for your guests. However, if you have your own housekeeper and prefer to manage your property yourself, then the Bookings nly package could be right for you. We are wholly focused on helping you to provide the best experience for your guests and thereby make the most of your holiday property, says James. This includes innovative property marketing, exceptional housekeeping, and all guest services and communication. In short, all bases that you require covering will be, leaving you to enjoy the benefits of holiday home ownership in a way that suits your lifestyle.

Children will love getting cosy in the snug with their very own TV and toy box, while culinary creatives will find everything they need to cook up a storm in the sleek kitchen, which comes complete with a breakfast bar and therefore provides a sociable space in which to prepare a feast with a glass (or bottle!) of wine to hand. The gardens provide the perfect setting for a stylish al fresco feast. A soft lawn melts away from the patio, ideal for little ones and furry friends to play safely, while a bubbling hot tub takes centre stage, perfectly positioned to watch the sun dip beyond the horizon.

THE NEXT CHAPTER St Ives based holiday lettings agent unveils fresh, new look!

ABOVE Cornish Escapes’ new website

A

fter 22 years in the holiday industry and ten years spent running Escape to St Ives holiday letting agency, owners Louise and John Bryan felt it was time for a change – the creation of a new brand that reflects not only where they’ve come from, but where they’re heading to. Well known for their exceptional housekeeping standards, attention to detail and personal touches, this family run business began with only a few properties. Today, customers can choose from over 100 properties, ranging from penthouse apartments overlooking St Ives harbour, to picturesque cottages and larger townhouses with stunning sea views. And the portfolio is growing, as Louise explains: “We are always on the lookout for beautiful holiday homes to put on our books, so that we can keep our loyal customer base engaged and ensure perfect holiday experiences year on year.” Recently, however, due to Cornwall’s growing popularity as a holiday destination and St Ives, in particular, Escape to St Ives have been encouraged to search slightly further afield from its base. f course, transitioning from a well-established and loved brand into a new one is not easy,

but the Bryans are delighted with the new brand name – Cornish Escapes – which is a fittingly natural evolution that reflects both their roots, and their future. Louise and John’s children, Connor and Chloe, will very much be part of Cornish Escapes’ future. Connor is excited by the development of the company and has been closely involved in the creation of the new brand. “I’ve really enjoyed being a part of the whole rebranding process. I believe that this new look puts us exactly where we want to be.” Whilst their fresh new look symbolises an exciting new chapter for the company as Cornish Escapes, the team, values and excellent service that have, for a decade, underpinned the company’s success remain very much the same. With a company mantra that says ‘Relax, it’s all taken care of’, if you’re about to plan your next escape to beautiful Cornwall, or are thinking about renting your Cornish retreat, be sure to visit the new Cornish Escapes website to find out more.

DESIGNING YOUR DREAM HOME The ability to view 2 dimensional drawings and to see them in 3 dimension and then scale them up to something that is discernible can be difficult. Modern software packages allow incredible detail in on screen models and even create fly throughs to give an impression of what your new home may be like. Having a physical model built can also give a good impression of what to expect from your completed project. But what other steps can you take to make sure the design you sign off on will in reality deliver your dream home. • Have the designer present when you view the drawings • Look at the drawings on site • Get a schedule of room sizes • Agree in advance to seeing the drawings which are for you the critical spaces • Know the site and the passage of the sun • Understand the key views and areas of privacy • Look at how you would use the space • Remember, details are important • Storage – how much do you need? • Think about the things you would improve about your current home. ornwall is home to an array of beautiful places to stay, but you will not find a more unique property than The Bodmin Jail Hotel. This boutique hotel is nestled in Bodmin, not far from the famous Moor, and was built by Napoleonic prisoners in 1779 and used as a prison until 1927, when it was decommissioned. The jail then fell into disrepair, until it was bought by its current owner who could see the wonderful potential of the space, which has been sensitively restored and many of the original features retained. Three prison cells have been knocked together and are now stylish bedrooms, with original doors and bars on the windows. The original prison layout was ideal for achieving an industrial chic look with four floors of steel exoskeleton and a metal landing underneath a glazed roof that brings in lots of natural light. Guests checking into The Bodmin Jail Hotel can now expect a hotel that retains and enhances a unique atmosphere and sense of history. If fine dining makes your holiday, then The Chapel Restaurant delivers on that front. This fabulous restaurant offers a seasonal à la carte menu and the daily changing table d'hôte. Carefully curated from locally sourced ingredients, Head Chef

Dane Watkins (formerly of The Headland Hotel) creates a superb dining experience with dishes such as seared scallops, pan-friend turbot and Ruby Red beef fillet. Every morning the team will serve you a hearty Cornish breakfast to prepare you for your day. The Bodmin Jail Hotel is to be found in the heart of Cornwall, and with both coasts accessible in 20 minutes, it is an ideal base for both a coastal and country adventure. You can head north and experience the wild waves of Polzeath, a mecca for surfers, or go to the south coast for sheltered coves, which are perfect for paddle boarding and sailing. Active guests can hire bikes to cycle the 18-mile trail to Padstow or head up to Bodmin Moor, one of the most dramatic places to explore in Cornwall. The on-site Bodmin Jail Attraction is another must-do and has an immersive ‘Dark Walk’ experience, which shows colourful characters from Cornwall’s past, who were inmates in the former jail. After exploring the sites around Cornwall, you might wish to head to the hotel’s Champagne Bar for bubbles or afternoon tea, the perfect setting for a spot of relaxation.
