On the water with Children’s Sailing Trust Be it at Trevassack Lake or on the Helford River, people of all ages, from 6 to 106, can take to the water with confidence and have the time of their lives. With watersports activities provided by Children’s Sailing Trust, you can brush up on your sailing skills or learn to powerboat on the Helford with help from the expert team of instructors. Alternatively, Trevassack Lake – the charity’s new venture just ten minutes from Helston – provides much-needed facilities for young people with special educational needs and physical disabilities, but is open to everyone. If you’re here on holiday, you can visit the lake and float serenely on a stand-up-paddleboard, enjoy a multi-activity session, or simply sit

at the lakeside café. However you like to spend your time, just come along and join the fun! With every session booked, you’ll be helping to create opportunities for local children to get out on the water – children who otherwise wouldn’t get the chance. Summer fun at Newquay Orchard Get outdoors this summer at Newquay Orchard! Rewild little ones with natural play before grabbing a bite to eat at Canteen at the Orchard, where the cinnamon buns come highly recommended. Spot the bugs and birds, make some noise on the pots and pans drum kit and play hide and seek in the tall grass of the Wild Wood; there’s nature all around you at Newquay Orchard. Why not try the Imagine Outdoors summer outdoor mini bush craft clubs too? Littles ones can take their seats and delight in outdoor theatre at Newquay Orchard this upcoming school summer holidays, too. You can catch family friendly theatre performances with David Walliam’s Awful Auntie, Miracle Theatre’s King Lear, a fireside

take on King Arthur and a latesummer Midsummer Night’s Dream, all lighting up the stage of Newquay’s biggest seated outdoor amphitheatre. For more information contact info@newquayorchard.co.uk or visit www.newquayorchard.co.uk

Soldiering fun at Bodmin Keep

Bodmin Keep was the home of Cornish regiments from 1859 and buzzed with military activity from Waterloo to the Second World War. Now a museum, it inspires and connects young and old visitors with a fascinating collection of soldiers’ possessions, historic weapons, artefacts and handson experiences. It’s a museum that honours bravery and courage, telling the stories of ordinary soldiers during extraordinary times.

Bodmin Keep is a short walk from the town centre, next door to the Bodmin & Wenford Steam Railway. Open 10am to 5pm, Monday to Saturday, it’s great value at £7 for adults and £3 for children for a year-round ticket. You can even bring your dog! For full information about events, opening hours and access, visit the museum’s website. For more information visit www.bodminkeep.org

A hub of

Cornish history Step back in time at the Museum of Cornish Life in Helston. This free, family friendly museum is spread over five display halls on three floors, and there are thousands of things to see that will keep everyone fascinated and entertained. Located in Helston’s town centre, there’s plenty to learn about the town’s history and heritage, with information about places all over Cornwall too! Learn about Helston’s famous inventor Henry Trengrouse, whose rocket lifesaving apparatus saved thousands of lives at sea; imagine what it was like in a Victorian classroom; meet Henry the parrot and see if you can spot the museum’s smallest object – made from a lion’s tooth! There are regular making workshops, a children’s play area, dressing up, a gift shop and a delightful pop up café, so make sure to pay this wonderful historical hub a visit if you find yourself passing through this year. Become a Dive Buddy Sponsor! Dive Project Cornwall aims to raise awareness across the UK about the importance of our oceans, and the vital role they play within our own existence. At the heart of the project is a competition, open to all UK secondary schools, for 400 lucky teenagers to win the experience of a lifetime; a six-day trip to Porthkerris, where they will become PADI qualified open water divers. Through this experience, Dive Project Cornwall hopes to turn the lucky teenagers into ‘ocean influencers’, who will positively engage, inspire and motivate the next generation to save our planet. But it needs your help, which is why it’s on the lookout for anybody interested in becoming a ‘Dive Buddy’ sponsor. In diving, your dive buddy is your lifeline –

the person you rely on to ensure a fun and safe dive experience. As a sponsorship package, becoming a Dive Buddy is the perfect option for small businesses and individuals who wish to help Dive Project Cornwall deliver on its crucial mission. For more information visit www.diveprojectcornwall. co.uk/dive-buddy-sponsor-pack

Take to the water with the kids this summer for some aquatic adventuring.

W

hether your family is looking for a day of thrills or a more relaxed adventure, you will find something for the whole family at Kernow Adventure Park. You will be amazed at what you’ll discover nestled within the depths of a disused quarry just a short drive outside of the historic town of Falmouth. The experienced team will be waiting to meet you at the beautiful glass fronted club house, ready to kit you out with all the safety gear you will need for your day full of fun. You can choose from an array of activities; there really is something to suit every adventurer. Bounce your way around the Aqua Park, an air-filled assault course floating just a few meters from the water’s edges waiting for the fun to begin. Family members from age six years and up can clamber, climb, jump and laugh their way to exhaustion. There are balance beams, huge slides, and plenty of bouncing platforms to test your balance skills before plunging into the crystal-clear waters. If you are looking for something a little more relaxing enjoy a cruise around the lake in one of the Adventure Park’s E-boats. Taking passengers from age two, you can glide around the lake, peering into the vastness of the depths of the quarry, and taking in the sheer scale of its height from the outer edges. If you’re craving a moment to yourself, why not get out on the water on one of the paddleboards available for hire or get in a few lengths in the dedicated swim lanes while listening to the rest of the family laughing away. As the day draws to a close and your legs are tired but your skin is soft from a day in the water, sit back and relax with a snack from the food truck or bring a picnic and settle down on one of the grassy terraces to take in the last of the day’s sunshine. mining heritage

In the 19th century, Cornwall became home to the global industry of mining for minerals such as tin, copper and coal, with its rich stretches of coastline and pockets of ore lying beneath seabed. It’s fascinating to learn that some mines, such as those on the ‘Tin Coast’, stretched almost a mile out to sea, beneath the very bedrock of the Atlantic! And, by exploring the various visitor centres and abandoned engine house ruins, dotted all around the Cornish landscape, there’s plenty to be discovered.

1ENGINE HOUSE TRAIL

If your kids love nothing more than mounting up on two wheels, then taking on a stretch of the Engine House Trail is the perfect way to spend a day. Winding its way through 13 Cornish towns, from Hayle to Bissoe, there are hundreds of historic landmarks to see, from Gwennap Pit – a Cornish amphitheatre made famous by the founder of Methodism, John Wesley, to the Carn Brea Monument – built to commemorate local baron,

Tim Green

mine and 2 levant beam engine

This National Trust site offers visitors the chance to explore the various ruins of Levant mine. Follow in the footsteps of the miners who once worked there, hear the tales of the Edwardian miners and discover the site’s secrets. Learn how the history of this mining site took a tragic turn in 1919, as the man-engine failed after a link snapped, killing 31 men and heralding an end to the mining of the mine’s deepest levels.

Despite the name, Wheal Prosper was anything but prosperous. It is, however, a stunning place to visit. The iconic engine house on Rinsey head – with uninterrupted, panoramic views over the Atlantic – is a fantastic spot for a picnic, and the adventurous types can even climb inside the ruin. Further along the coast path you’ll find more dilapidated ruins, but be sure to stay safe and look at these from a short distance.

POLDARK MINE If you’re near Helston or the Lizard, be sure to visit Poldark Mine – the only complete tin mine in Cornwall that’s open for underground guided tours. Mining here dates back to Bronze Age, so it’s definitely one for those budding ancient-history buffs!

Wheal Prosper

Derek Harper

Geevor Tin Mine is the country’s largest preserved mining site, where visitors can go underground and experience a real, 18th century tin mine. The Hard Rock Museum tells the story of Cornish mining, while the many other buildings, with their magnificent mining machinery, provide a fascinating insight into the industry. The world, during the 19th century, relied on Cornwall for its mining technology exports and at Geevor, you’ll begin to understand why!

DO YOUR RESEARCH! While some ruins are safe to get close to and even go inside, others certainly aren’t! So, be sure to break out your smartphone or do your research beforehand, and if signs tell you to stay clear, then please do!

5 wheal coates, st agnes

It’s likely that your kids will want to give surfing a go, particularly when the sun’s out, so why not head down to St Agnes, one of the north coast’s most popular surf spots, before exploring the local coast path and seeing what heritage it has to offer? Wheal Coates is arguably one of the most iconic engine houses in Cornwall and, upon visiting the spot and seeing it for yourselves, it’s easy to see why. Get there just before the sun goes down and experience one of the finest sunsets you’re ever likely to see!
