mbracing wintry days in Cornwall is a magical journey into a landscape transformed by the brisk touch of the season. As the chilly breath of winter sweeps across the coastal cliffs and quiet villages, a serene beauty blankets the region. The air is crisp, carrying the salty tang of the sea and the sound of crashing waves – a comforting backdrop to the wintry scene. Cornwall's rugged coastline takes on a different allure in the winter months. Clifftop walks offer breathtaking panoramas of the frothy sea below, while the dramatic cliffs are adorned with a sprinkle of frost, creating a picturesque contrast against the ocean. Secluded coves, once bustling with summer activity, now exude a quiet tranquillity, inviting peaceful contemplation. Inland, the countryside wears a frosty coat, and the moors become a patchwork of earthy hues and glistening frost. Cozy village pubs beckon with the warmth of roaring fires, providing both victuals and a refuge from the brisk outdoors. The aroma of hearty stews and hot beverages wafts through the air, offering a taste of Cornwall's culinary delights that are particularly comforting in these colder months. Cornwall's wintry days also invite exploration of its historic sites and enchanting towns. From the medieval charm of Tintagel to the atmospheric streets of St. Ives, each area reveals a different facet of the region's rich history against the backdrop of a winter wonderland. And indeed, special winter wonderlands can be found across Cornwall as Christmas approaches; join Ysy Lees (from page 8) as she explores some of Cornwall's cherished yuletide events. When the day is done, and the sun sets, the darkening skies give way to a celestial spectacle. Cornwall's clear nights offer an unparalleled opportunity for stargazing, with constellations shining brightly above the tranquil landscape. Experiencing winter in Cornwall is a captivating journey into a realm of natural beauty, cultural richness and serene moments. You can experience this first-hand with a Cornish stay. From luxury hotels (from page 16) to stunning holiday homes (from page 15) there are some truly amazing retreats just waiting to be discovered. If you just happen to fall under Cornwall's spell and can't bring yourself to leave, then from page 22, our award-winning property partners Rohrs & Rowe might have just the dream home that will tempt you to stay forever. …happy reading!

Polberro Cottage

A magical stay at Wooda After another beautiful summer here in Cornwall, we can start to look forward to cosy nights in, cuddling up by the fire and enjoying the beauty of our surroundings during the quieter months ahead. If you’ve been planning a trip to Cornwall this year, there’s still time to make your Cornish escape happen, with the autumn and winter as magical, mesmerising and as full of marvellous memory-making moments as any other time of the year. For many locals, the colder months are undoubtedly the best time to explore and enjoy north Cornwall. The picturesque nature of the region in autumnal hues means the stunning landscapes, charming villages and rich cultural heritage takes on a magical quality during this season that makes it perfect for those seeking unique and tranquil experiences. Cornwall is also a little

quieter during these months, allowing for a slower-paced getaway and even more beach, cliff and moor to yourself. At Wooda Farm Holiday Park, a dream stay awaits for everyone. From the luxurious offerings of the eco Gwelva Hills lodges, with stunning sea views and all the mod cons you could wish for, to the traditional charm of their Cornish holiday cottages, sleeping up to ten people – perfect for family gatherings! With availability over Christmas, New Year and low-season autumn and winter, Wooda also caters for a variety of budgets and groups, from couples with their four-legged friends, to family reunions spanning generations – it’s a magical place for your Cornish winter escape.

Letting your holiday home has never been easier… We are looking to expand our portfolio across the county, and are dedicated to making the process of sharing your holiday home easy and enjoyable. With tailored services to suit your needs, you can be involved as much or as little as you like, knowing that you and your guests are in safe hands.

T ABOVE  Santa's Grotto returns to Trevena Cross this year

he Duchy comes into its own at this time of year, transforming from a coast blanketed in delicate auburn leaves to one bordered with crashing waves, sweeping afternoon sunsets and crisp, biting breezes. In spite of this, at the heart of the colder season’s metamorphosis is warmth; crackling pub fires defrost the toes of heat seekers, flickering candles peek through the drawn curtains of houses and steaming cups of mulled wine wait patiently to be sipped. As festive anticipation builds, journey with us to discover some of the most magical ways to spend your days as we sink deeper into winter and the big day approaches on the frosted horizon. Throw yourself in the festive deep end with a trip to Trevena Cross Nurseries (trevenacross. co.uk), famous for its magical transformation from tropical garden centre to winter wonderland. This year promises to be extra special for visitors with the re-introduction of Santa’s Grotto for the first time since 2019. Once a tradition for many before the COVID pandemic hit, the team is only now in a position to bring back this popular community attraction. Garden Centre Manager Nick Hann explains: “Building it from scratch, we are investing a lot of time, money and spirit into its creation and we just hope we can live up to, or better still, exceed visitor expectations and memories of the grotto.” Of course, there is much more to explore than the grotto; whether you are looking for a gift for a loved one, a new decoration to adorn the tree, or the tree itself, there are endless festive essentials at Trevena Cross. Pick up a box and fill it with your favourites from traditional twinkling baubles and delicate glass ornaments to contemporary and quirky decorations, accompanied by a large variety of lights, tinsel and gifts. Once you’ve stocked up on decorations, take your time perusing the large variety of trees, including the £25 non-drop Nordmann Firs, so you can make the most of the sweet smell of pine and admire your new haul within your own home. If you’re visiting during a weekend in

December, explore one of 25 local traders for the perfect stocking filler, indulge in festive photo opportunities and soak up the festive glow before heading home. For an even larger selection of traders, we would recommend making a visit to Fowey Christmas Market (foweychristmasmarket. foweychristmasmarket. co.uk)) due to take place on 8th, 9th and 10th December. Sponsored by Shop Cornish and supported by us at Cornwall Living,, here you will find almost 100 stalls across three venues manned by local artisans, makers and bakers waiting to offer you a smörgåsbord of quality products and produce. Park in the nearby car park in Fowey or catch the minibus into the town centre to visit the market which attracts thousands of attendees each year. Take your time sampling tipples, chatting to traders and picking out the perfect present all while seasonal music drifts

through the air and roasted chestnuts tempt the tastebuds. You could easily while away several hours wandering across Fowey Town Quay, Albert Quay and Web Street, delighting in the range of wares for all tastes and budgets, and there is plenty of opportunity to stop in one of Fowey’s fantastic eateries for a well-deserved refuel. Moments before the town band strikes up to begin the Christmas parade, wave hello to Father Christmas as he arrives by tugboat to lead the procession. Finally, experience the switching on of the lights amongst delighted onlookers and become immersed in a world of music and magic where festive cheer exists in abundance. If you prefer Christmas lights without the crowds, take a driving tour of some of Cornwall’s most beautiful spots during the colder season, perhaps stopping for a stroll underneath the moonlight. Travel through Newlyn to take in the view of the arching coast with lights indistinguishable from stars, twinkling in the distance as you make your way to Mousehole (mouseholelights.org. uk), arguably one of the best locations in the Duchy for a dazzling display. Fairy lights hang from bare branches, boats bob in the distance and a mysterious sea creature inhabits the harbour while children delight in the stunning spectacle and run from lapping waves upon the shore. The reflection of illuminated house windows and glimmering paper lanterns glow on the glassy water surface as the excited hubbub and sweet smell of mulled wine from open-door pubs fill the air, pulling you in. For an equally breathtaking view, head to Angarrack where there is a captivating display at every turn. Wander through the streets to spot The Twelve Days of Christmas, marvel at the seven swans a-swimming on the river and take in the dedicated displays lighting up the local houses. Finally, take a trip to Mevagissey

where the pretty harbour becomes alive with colourful lights and its welcoming pubs and eateries offer a cosy retreat after a walk around its perimeter. While these are just a handful of our favourites, you are bound to find breathtaking illuminations wherever you turn in Cornwall as each community creates its own unique display. Alternatively, escape to Cotehele (nationaltrust.org.uk/visit/cornwall/cotehele), the National Trust-run Tudor house with medieval roots, glorious gardens and an expansive estate where a spectacular 60-foot garland adorns the Great Hall. A tradition since 1956, each year the gardeners at Cotehele build the garland from thousands of flowers grown on the estate. Preparations begin in January when flower seeds are sown in the Cut Flower Garden before being picked in late April and dried over the summer and autumn. After admiring the impressive display, follow the festive lights along the stream to Cotehele Mill, decorated in traditional Victorian style, and take in the sights and smells of the flour mill at Christmas. Wrap up warm to enjoy the performances of choirs and bands just outside the Hall Court before wandering across the frosty estate with a hot chocolate in hand; the Piggery in the farmyard has a selection of flavours and toppings to choose from so you can design your own to keep you toasty. On Saturday 23rd December the estate has its Wassail, an annual procession where visitors are encouraged to arrive at the estate in fancy dress with something noisy in hand and scare away the evil spirits, ensuring a bumper crop the following year. A trip to the Bull Pen Gallery offers a range of unique gifts inspired by Cotehele itself, from Christmas garlands and games to festive tree decorations and luxury Christmas biscuits. Spend the day discovering the festive history that lies within the walls of this grand estate and be part of how it continues to be celebrated today.

STAY

Escape to

LUXURY

Retreat to the Cornish coast in a luxurious countryside cottage, with Old Lanwarnick.

I

f you are planning a trip to Cornwall, then Old Lanwarnick offers luxury, dogfriendly, self-catered accommodation for you, your family and your friends. Lovingly converted from the old farmhouse and stables that stood on this site for hundreds of years, the cottages are full of history, with stunning original features like vaulted ceilings and flagstone floors. Today, the retreat provides families, couples and groups the chance to get away from the stresses of everyday life and enjoy some much-needed relaxation while on holiday in Cornwall. Old Lanwarnick has cosy stable conversions for two, like Honey Pot and Spice Barn, right up to an historic 17th-century farmhouse for eight, so no matter the size of your group, you will be accommodated. You can even book multiple cottages for more than eight people, or the whole site for 25. Rainbow Cottage is the perfect size for young families or couples looking for a little extra space, with one king-size bedroom and a single room ideal for kids or separate sleepers. Hob Nob Cottage has an impressive first-floor living area with vaulted ceilings and three bedrooms to sleep a group of six. Both cottages have wonderful views from their Juliet balcony and a woodburner to curl up next to on a chilly autumn or winter’s day.

Old Lanwarnick is just a few miles from popular destinations such as Looe, Polperro and Fowey, making it the perfect place for those looking to explore. There is plenty to do near your cottage too. Sit and enjoy the views, go on the on-site woodland walk, relax in the hot tub, book the therapist for a massage, or use the on-site gym. Alternatively, just relax in the peace and quiet of your cottage, nestled in the tranquil Cornish countryside. With two enclosed dog exercise areas, a heated dog wash, secure gardens, patios and walks from the doors, even your four-legged friends can indulge in some luxury! There are also three on-site EV chargers. If this sounds like your perfect escape to the coast, don’t hesitate to browse the variety of cottages and even book your own on Old Lanwarnick’s website. The team can’t wait to welcome you.

e ultimate ThTASTING

EXPERIENCE Indulge in nine dishes of delicious local produce, brought to you by the Talland Bay Hotel.

I

f you enjoy fresh local ingredients and complimentary tipples paired with expert tasting notes in a relaxed yet luxurious dining environment, then this tasting experience is for you. The Talland Bay Hotel does things a little differently, presenting and explaining each dish as you make your way through the varied courses. Start your evening in the bar with a Talland Bay No 1 gin and tonic to accompany freshly prepared snacks. The gin is made in collaboration with Colwith Farm, combining a potato-based spirit with botanicals like pine, mint, rose and elderflower from the team’s very own garden. The culinary journey continues into the dining room for seven courses, representing the very best of their seasonal kitchen. Tease your appetite with an amuse bouche before savouring your first of two smaller plates, showcasing perfectly executed cooking. Your second smaller plate will introduce incredible local fish, letting hand-dived scallops shine before the main event. Here, perfectly balanced flavours and seasonality melt together with Rioja Reserve or Californian Zinfandel in a

dish of meat, game, or poultry. Each course is matched with the perfect wine; whether it’s still, sparkling or fortified, the Talland Bay Hotel never hides behind norms or tradition. Cut through the sumptuous savouries with something cold, refreshing and light before your rich dessert, served with a glass of fizz. And what could be better to enjoy after your meal than cheese and sherry? Finally, end your tasting experience with coffee, tisane, or tea in the bar, paired with a variety of sweet treats to leave your palate feeling spoilt and satisfied. A Lemoncello or house cold compound spirit also provides a delicious and refreshing finish! Talland Bay’s tasting experience is a collaborative effort, from front of house and gardeners to Head Chef Glen and his brilliant brigade in the kitchen. Enjoy a totally Talland evening by booking a one-night dine and stay, allowing you to simply stroll back to the comfort of your own room and reflect on your favourite elements of the night. We can't think of few better ways to experience culinary Cornwall.

ART

Art in Focus PAINTINGS OF QUIET CORNERS John McKinstry is a Cornwall-based artist who has been painting the landscape for as long as he can remember. “It is something I just can’t imagine not doing,” he explains, “and like most landscape artists, I try to capture those parts of it that most inspire.” For John, these come in many forms; solitary cottages; small hamlets and harbours clinging to the coast; moorland farms stark against imposing skies. As he puts it: “These are the places that stir in me the emotions I need to feel while I paint and which I hope I manage to occasionally reflect on my canvas.” Original paintings and limited-edition prints are available in galleries across the UK, as well as on John’s website. If you would like to see your own piece of calming artwork brought to life, John also welcomes commissions, so don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Being surrounded by coastline we are spoilt for choice, from rugged cliffs and dark dramatic waves to calm turquoise waters and soft white sand. The texture in the artwork allows lots of light reflection which shows off the various colours within the iridescent glass. CHARITY

VISITOR

During a visit to Cornwall in September, Judi Dench meets ‘Judi Dench’ at the Cornish Seal Sanctuary!

 INSET Dame Judi Dench  BELOW ‘Judi Dench’ the seal pup

A

grey seal pup dubbed ‘Judi Dench’ has managed to meet her namesake on the very same day she was taken in by the Cornish Seal Sanctuary. Dame Judi Dench, one of the country’s most beloved cinematic jewels, was visiting the area in September with her family when she stopped by the sanctuary in Gweek, near Helston. At the time, the charity (which rescues up to 70 seal pups from around Cornwall each winter) also took in a new pup. The threeweek-old pup was admitted to the site’s hospital, after being found dehydrated with several wounds on Millook Haven Beach. “It was like fate,” says the Sanctuary’s Fundraising Manager, Leanne Attwood. “With our actors and actresses naming theme this season, we knew we just had to name her after Judi Dench, who was already on our list of name ideas. Judi was an absolute delight and so gracious about the naming. She was so excited to be able to meet pup Judi and explore behind-the-scenes of our Seal Hospital.”

Today, Judi the pup is well on her way to a successful release back to the wild, but it’s only with your help that the Sanctuary can continue this vital work. On average, it costs the charity £2,000 to rescue, rehabilitate and release a pup, including everything from equipment to vet’s bills and food supplies. Funds from every visit to the Sanctuary go towards this conservation work, ensuring our Cornish grey seal population remains strong and healthy, but if you can’t make it in person, you can donate via sealsanctuary. sealifetrust.com.
