hile the heady days of summer are a thing of beauty here in Cornwall, when the Duchy dons her autumn cloak it is a time to embrace the change in seasons. Think wintry walks across empty beaches, wild rambles across craggy cliff tops and icy sea dips that awaken the senses, all rewarded with warming up in front of a roaring fire, cradling a cup of something steaming hot. If you're looking to visit Cornwall over the coming months, then turn to page 10 where Ysy Lees has been exploring a host of wonderful winter stays. Each one has its own unique characteristics, and all offer a wonderful base from which to explore. A favourite of ours is Talland Bay Hotel (page 22), where its amazing coastal location and locally sourced menus make for a very special stay. If you're more of a townie at heart, then the chic Penventon Hotel (from page 18) in Redruth exudes luxury at every turn and also boasts a unique dining experience. For a taste of historic grandeur, the Falmouth Hotel (page 20) is at the pinnacle of coastal stays, set just back from the beach with amazing views across Falmouth Bay. If you're visiting with a young family, then you may prefer a self-catering stay, in which case Old Lanwarnick (page 21) could provide just the independence you are looking for in a countryside setting. If the lure of the sea is just too much, then our neighbours at Porthleven Holiday Cottages (page 17) offer a wide range of luxury properties in and around the village, with the beach and South West Coast Path just steps away. While outdoor adventures are certainly invigorating at this time of year, if you are looking for an escape at a more leisurely pace then this is when Cornwall turns its attention to the festive season. You'll find a host of gorgeous food and craft events taking place across the county so, if you're looking for some delicious local produce to grace your Christms table or that extra special gift for a loved one, then you'll have come to the right place – take a peek at some gorgeous artwork from John McKinstry on page 23. This issue, we are joined once again by our award-winning property partners, Rohrs & Rowe, from page 26. If you fall under the spell of the Duchy while you're here and feel that you could simply stay forever, then one of these carefully selected luxury properties could be your forever Cornish home.

Experience A FAMILY DAY OUT ON TWO WHEELS AT THE NATIONAL TRUST’S LANHYDROCK ESTATE With bikes for all ages available to hire, including those with child seat, tag-along and trailer attachments, the National Trust-owned estate at Lanhydrock is waiting to welcome families hoping to explore its winding woodland trails on two wheels. There are lots of trails to choose from, depending on your ability. The easy Lodge trail, for example, is a 1.5-mile long, well-surfaced route flanked by a mixture of English woodland and conifer trees, suitable for trailers, tag-alongs and disability bikes. Four moderate trails – named Bazley’s, Walter’s, Hart and Timber – prove an exciting test for keen mountain bikers, and The Saw Pit – a dual-slalom track – provides the estate’s most difficult ride. With tightly packed rollers, jumps and banked corners, it features two tracks running side by side, making it the perfect opportunity to race friends and family.

A magical stay at Wooda After another beautiful summer here in Cornwall, we can start to look forward to cosy nights in, cuddling up by the fire and enjoying the beauty of our surroundings during the quieter months ahead. If you’ve been planning a trip to Cornwall this year, there’s still time to make your Cornish escape happen, with the autumn and winter as magical, mesmerising and as full of marvellous memory-making moments as any other time of the year. For many locals, the colder months are undoubtedly the best time to explore and enjoy north Cornwall. The picturesque nature of the region in autumnal hues means the stunning landscapes, charming villages and rich cultural heritage takes on a magical quality during this season that makes it perfect for those seeking unique and tranquil experiences. Cornwall is also a little quieter

during these months allowing for a slowerpaced getaway and even more beach, cliff and moor to yourself. At Wooda Farm Holiday Park, a dream stay awaits for everyone. From the luxurious offerings of the eco Gwelva Hills lodges, with stunning sea views and all the mod cons you could wish for, to the traditional charm of its Cornish Holiday Cottages, sleeping up to 10 people, this retreat is perfect for family gatherings! With availability over Christmas, New Year and low season autumn and winter, Wooda also caters for a variety of budgets and groups, from couples with their four-legged friends, to family reunions spanning generations – it’s a magical place for your Cornish winter escape.

Letting your holiday home has never been easier We know that choosing an agency to let your property can be a big decision. At Cornwall Hideaways our experienced local team is here to make sure the whole process of letting your holiday home is as simple as possible from day one. I

t is well known locally that with the colder temperatures comes a sense of peace, quiet and tranquillity here in the Duchy. Our landscape is blanketed in frost and the sunny coastal destination transforms into a winter wonderland of twinkling Christmas lights, roaring waves and sweeping sunsets. For those visiting from afar, it becomes an entirely different yet magical playground waiting to be explored and dotted with the perfect hideaways to escape the chill. I would even argue that Cornwall is more captivating when the defiant cliffs jut onto empty beaches than in the hot heady days of summer. Peacefulness isn’t the only difference winter brings, but also the desire for quick or lastminute escapes to the Duchy. At Cornish Escapes (cornish-escapes.com), the agency has had a wonderful summer of bookings and while it continues with steady stays throughout winter, the company also receives a large number of last-minute reservations. Guests are no longer looking to be tied to week-long stays with Friday or Saturday changeovers, but instead prefer short stays with flexible arrival days which is exactly what Cornish Escapes offers. From romantic getaways in secluded rural cottages to family holidays by the stormy coast, a stay during this season is guaranteed to be relaxing yet adventurous. The team is a group of family-run local experts who offer a personal service and have lived here for over 20 years, providing them with a deep knowledge of Cornwall. They truly believe there is nothing quite like exploring the land during winter to take advantage of the quiet cobbled streets and crisp coastal walks. Of course, there is much more than the beautiful landscape on offer to explore around one of the many properties belonging to Cornish Escapes. Visit galleries such as The Tate and the Barbara Hepworth Museum in St Ives without the too-close-for-comfort crowds and stressful travel. If you’re feeling particularly brave, take a dip in the water for a surfing lesson or swim before ending the day by the fire in one of many traditional pubs. If you prefer to stay on land, pull on

your skates for a session on the ice rink at the Eden Project which, despite being a fantastic visit all year round, is particularly festive for families during winter. For an extra touch of magic, don’t forget to say hello to Santa in December when he comes to visit St Ives on the lifeboat. At Old Lanwarnick (oldlanwarnick. oldlanwarnick. co.uk), ), the sentiment remains the same. The team here has also noticed a trend leaning towards more last-minute bookings and shorter stays, suggesting a desire for quick escapes from everyday life. That doesn’t mean that the rest of the year is quiet; despite a few empty cottages during the school-holiday period compared to being fully booked the previous year, Old Lanwarnick has been much busier in spring, summer and autumn than it was in 2022. Overall, 2023 has been

very fruitful for the multi-awardwinning holiday accommodation so far, while the upcoming season offers dog owners the opportunity to explore the land without limitations. Go for a stretch on Tregantle or Lan Sallos beach, then warm up in your hot tub or around the woodburner with a hot drink. If you want to venture a little further, there is a plethora of activities to do within a 15-minute drive of Old Lanwarnick from horse riding and tasting the local cider at Cornish Orchards to visiting Carnglaze Caverns and the Monkey Sanctuary. Make the most of the beautiful wintry wonderland by going on a walk across the South West Coast Path or from your cottage door through the nearby woods and along the river to Looe. With holidaymakers wanting their Cornish holiday to be as easy and hassle-free as possible, Old Lanwarnick has created an electronic guidebook with the aim of having everything you could need within your property from itineraries and suggestions to EV chargers for your electronic car. A hot tub is also to be added to Hob Nob cottage as well as a dog agility course for your four-legged friend, and clay pigeon shooting in the future. Discover more on page 21. For a real taste of warm and welcoming luxury, Penventon Park Hotel (penventon. co.uk) in Redruth combines originality with sophistication. While many come for the picturesque beaches and clear waters of summer, Penventon and the surrounding landscape come into their own in winter. The crisp air and quiet gardens make you feel as though you have Cornwall to yourself. After a busy period of guests making the most of post-lockdown stays, Penventon has steadied back to a more regular season of repeat guests returning to the in-land hotel, impressed by the lively restaurant and bar, Leisure Club, plush interiors and spa treatment rooms. Because

of this location, the hotel is less sunshinedependent and doesn’t face the impact of a milder summer which should reflect into the winter season. Famous for its majestic, crashing waves, it would be an oversight to pass up the opportunity to visit Portreath beach or immerse yourself in the peaceful birdsong and crunchy leaves of Tehidy Woods during your stay. If the warmth and cosiness of the hotel is irresistible, then indulge in a spa day, an evening of cocktail-making with friends, or a Murder Mystery Dinner in the Grand Ballroom. Penventon has a variety of winter offers, from its best-selling Girls Night In stay with Prosecco, films and face masks, to a January Sparkling Stay and Dine to kick the new year off right. Just as Old Lanwarnick is hoping to offer guests everything they could possibly need, the team at Penventon has also noticed the expectation of standards increase over the years and have refurbished its stunning rooms as a result. After noticing a rise in demand for more experience-led holidays and dog-friendly accommodation, Penventon also offers ‘fun dine, not fine dine’ experiences for more informal eating as well as spacious dog-friendly bedrooms where furry friends can stay for free. The future of Penventon promises 2,000 bottles of Cornwall’s largest and finest wine selection and a complete garden restoration, working towards a more sustainable future for guests. Another advocate for greener accommodation is Wooda Farm Holiday Park (wooda.co.uk). Wooda has catered to the sustainable preferences of guests in the last few years by installing solar panels, using lowenergy lightbulbs and sourcing local produce to ensure an environmentally friendly future at the properties. Despite a slight drop in numbers after the post-pandemic boost, it has still had a fantastic year with new visitors discovering the beauty of Bude. With a range

of accommodation to suit all budgets in light of the cost-of-living crisis, the increase in last-minute bookings comes as no surprise when you consider the location. Not only does Bude become more magical during winter but the retreat is within reach of Widemouth Bay, the perfect place to stretch your legs, hot chocolate in hand and lively dog by your side. The seaside town is home to cosy pubs, family-friendly cafés and fine dining restaurants featuring locally caught fish for visiting foodies. Although the campsite closes during the winter, Wooda’s holiday cottages and luxurious eco-lodges remain open all year as the perfect base for an out-of-season escape. This time of year is just as magical if not more mesmerising and full of marvellous memory-making moments as any other season. The picturesque nature of the region, with its stunning landscapes, charming villages and rich cultural heritage, takes on a special quality during this season that makes it perfect for those seeking unique and tranquil experiences and allows for a slower-paced getaway. Stay entertained in the games room, indoor badminton court, or explore the sheltered Nature Trail before washing off muddy paws in the outside dog shower. The Gwelva Hills lodges provide sweeping views across the sea while three of Wooda’s self-catering cottages sleep up to ten people and are ideal for cosy family gatherings by the fireside. Discover more on page 9. Whether you are after a last-minute escape to a spa and bar or a few weeks by the fireplace of a comfortable cottage, there is no denying that Cornwall transforms into a perfect playground for both newcomers and seasoned winter wonderland explorers.

PARADISE Stay on the doorstep of Cornwall’s most southerly harbour with Porthleven Holiday Cottages.

O

nce entrenched in the historic fishing and pilchard industry, the coastal village of Porthleven now provides visitors with a truly picturesque harbour, breathtaking coastline and a selection of award-winning restaurants and independent shops. With repeat visitors returning year after year, the village offers plenty to do with friends or family, whether you’re coming for just a few days or a luxuriously long stay. Stroll past the iconic clock tower around the harbour to the beautiful beach and enjoy a refreshing dip or long walk across the sand. On the way, pop into the plethora of independent shops and cafés for a peruse of the wonderful local produce and refreshments. Follow the cliff path along the sea towards Penrose National Trust, where you will be greeted by stretching views across the Atlantic Ocean. After working up an appetite wave-watching, indulge in Porthleven’s fantastic selection of restaurants and cafés. Try Kota restaurant for five-star dining or Kota Kai for delicious eats with family and friends. Alternatively, grab some fish and chips to eat by the harbour, watching the boats bob on the surface and the sun set on the horizon. The Ship Inn pub is a wonderful place to enjoy a local beer, overlooking the water and watching the world go by. Don't forget to make time to

stop by the Shipyard Market to find the perfect gift or keepsake from local artisan traders, bakers and makers. If you are keen to get on the water, Vertical Blue (situated right on the harbour) offers stand-up paddleboarding, coasteering and kayaking adventures for everyone to get involved in. LIFESTYLE

t e he p a c s E ORDINARY The Penventon Park Hotel is where unparalleled luxury meets independent charm in the heart of Cornwall.

 ABOVE The stunning Copper Bar

T

he family-owned hotel has been a cornerstone of hospitality for the past 50 years, providing visitors and locals alike with the perfect hub for exploring the region’s breathtaking landscapes. Originally a Georgian manor house designed in the early 19th century, the hotel was built during the Regency period and the fashion, extravagance and distinctive architectural trends are still reflected in the stunning building today. The fusion of Cornish and Italian heritage reflects its rich history while giving the hotel space to evolve, inspire and surprise. It remains a distinctive destination, known for its maximalist style, lavish in the face of simplicity and now renowned for its authentic cuisine and selection of gin. From the moment you walk through the door, you are greeted by Georgian splendour and intrigue, an escape from the ordinary. Friendly staff wait to welcome

you at reception which, upon arrival, boasts lavish Venetian crystal chandeliers and an enchanting sky-high ceiling. Head to one of 63 luxurious bedrooms, complete with crisp white linen, Cosmopolitan mattresses, soft fluffy towels and a selection of Noble Isle bath and body products. The innovation of Cornwall combines with the theatre, drama and sheer grandeur of Italy so each element of Penventon’s rooms and the wider hotel is the result of passion and pure craftmanship; think gilded paintings, plush velvets, objets d’art, silks, satins and a grand piano to transport guests to a world of sophistication. Beyond the rooms and stunning architecture of the interior is the Leisure Club with everything you could dream of when it comes to relaxation. Containing an indoor heated pool, jacuzzi, traditional sauna, gym and two treatment rooms where pure indulgence lives, there is an array of treatments and packages to help melt away your stresses.

STAY

Penventon is far more than a place to rest your head, but a sanctuary to indulge in decadent culinary delights and expertly crafted drinks. The Copper Bar caters to rum drinkers, cocktail lovers, whiskey connoisseurs and ale enthusiasts alike and is home to the largest gin bar in Cornwall with a selection of over 140 gins to sample. Alternatively, savour iconic dishes from around the world right here in Cornwall in the Dining Galleries Restaurant. Enjoy a taste of Andalusia with aromatic pil pil prawns, journey to the streets of Venice with a decades-old secret Italian recipe, or stay close to home with a seafood linguine created using that morning’s catch from the coast. With a passion for wine that runs as deep as its passion for quality cuisine, Penventon has also dedicated time to curating an expansive wine list of 130 wines for a perfect pairing. During your stay at Penventon, the team understand that your dog isn’t just a pet, but a cherished family member. Furry friends are encouraged to join in on the fun in dog-friendly rooms which blend comfort and convenience. Each room features an open patio overlooking a small lawn so you can sip your morning coffee in peace while your dog

gets a stretch outside. There is also a generous doggy welcome basket on offer to get their tail wagging, containing a cosy fleece blanket, sink-in bed, towel, dog biscuit, food, water bowls and all the essentials for your dog’s stay. Penventon’s Pooch Plates menu is also designed to delight four-legged companions with healthy and nutritious options to keep your dog energised during their time exploring the luscious gardens and picturesque beaches of Cornwall. Penventon also has big plans for the future, from improving sustainability after installing four new EV charging points, to expanding its wine collection. It is currently in the process of creating Cornwall’s largest and finest wine selection, alongside the building of tasting rooms and cellars which will be home to 2,000 carefully curated bottles. The hotel is also working hard to carry on the history of creating great gardens, filled with wildflowers, orchids, rhododendrons and natural homes for wildlife to continue the legacy of the original 19th century design.

f you enjoy fresh local ingredients and complimentary tipples paired with expert tasting notes in a relaxed yet luxurious dining environment, then this tasting experience is for you. The Talland Bay Hotel does things a little differently, presenting and explaining each dish as you make your way through the varied courses. Start your evening in the bar with a Talland Bay No 1 gin and tonic to accompany freshly prepared snacks. The gin is made in collaboration with Colwith Farm, combining a potato-based spirit with botanicals like pine, mint, rose and elderflower from the team’s very own garden. The culinary journey continues into the dining room for seven courses, representing the very best of their seasonal kitchen. Tease your appetite with an amuse bouche before savouring your first of two smaller plates, showcasing perfectly executed cooking. Your second smaller plate will introduce incredible local fish, letting hand-dived scallops shine before the main event. Here, perfectly balanced flavours and seasonality melt together with Rioja Reserve or Californian Zinfandel in a

dish of meat, game, or poultry. Each course is matched with the perfect wine; whether it’s still, sparkling, or fortified, the Talland Bay Hotel never hides behind norms or tradition. Cut through the sumptuous savouries with something cold, refreshing and light before your rich dessert, served with a glass of fizz. And what could be better to enjoy after your meal than cheese and sherry? Finally, end your tasting experience with coffee, tisane, or tea in the bar, paired with a variety of sweet treats to leave your palate feeling spoilt and satisfied. A Lemoncello or house cold compound spirit also provides a delicious and refreshing finish! Talland Bay’s tasting experience is a collaborative effort, from front of house and gardeners to Head Chef Glen and his brilliant brigade in the kitchen. Enjoy a totally Talland evening by booking a one-night dine and stay, allowing you to simply stroll back to the comfort of your own room and reflect on your favourite elements of the night. ART

Art in Focus PAINTINGS OF QUIET CORNERS John McKinstry is a Cornwall-based artist who has been painting the landscape for as long as he can remember. “It is something I just can’t imagine not doing,” he explains, “and like most landscape artists, I try to capture those parts of it that most inspire.” For John, these come in many forms; solitary cottages, small hamlets and harbours clinging to the coast and moorland farms stark against imposing skies. As he puts it: “These are the places that stir in me the emotions I need to feel while I paint and which I hope I manage to occasionally reflect on my canvas.” Original paintings and limited-edition prints are available in galleries across the UK, as well as on John’s website. If you would like to see your own piece of calming artwork brought to life, John also welcomes commissions, so don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Into the heart of the river

Internationally acclaimed artist Kurt Jackson spent the last few years immersing himself in the elements on a beautiful, diverse and richly rewarding journey to create his latest series of paintings for the stunning new exhibition, The Fowey.

A handmade Cornish Christmas If you’re planning a visit to the ever-popular Made in Cornwall Christmas Fair at Truro Cathedral this December, you’re sure to encounter an incredible array of talented crafters and makers, one of which will be Mel Chambers of Alchemy Tiles. From Friday 1st to Saturday 2nd December, 10am to 5pm, Mel will once more present her impressive work as one of the only tile makers whose work is authenticated as an official Cornish product by Trading Standards. The quality of her work speaks for itself, having recently won the Best Hand-Crafted Tile Company at the SME Enterprise Awards for extensive expertise and skill, dedication to customer service and client satisfaction with an ongoing commitment to excellence and innovation. What makes this achievement even more impressive, is having won it four years running!

Cornish-made and exquisitely handcarved, Mel uses ancient 13th century inlay techniques so that each tile is individually hand carved as opposed to painted, creating beautiful images held eternal in earth and time, while keeping the techniques used centuries ago alive in today’s art. This Christmas, alongside her already impressive collection, Mel is offering beautiful bespoke Christmas decorations, a token of the festive period with a sentimental touch. Choose your favourite colour and style, add a name and Mel will create a unique bauble for your Christmas tree. Each piece takes two weeks to make, so book early to avoid disappointment! For more information email info@melchambers.com or visit www.alchemytiles.com

“Rivers are places we find emotive,” Jackson says, “they carry our memories, feelings and histories. Maybe more importantly, they are on the front line of the environmental and climate crisis.” To quote the environmental journalist George Monbiot: “Through Kurt Jackson’s stunning and gorgeous paintings, we derive a sense of what rivers once were and can be again. We can feel the flow and power of these magnificent living systems, their latent force and demand for freedom, the hint of what they want to be.” Kurt Jackson’s The Fowey will run until February at the multi-award-winning Jackson Foundation Gallery, St Just. For more information call 01736 787638 or visit www.jacksonfoundationgallery.com

ith views of Mount's Bay, Land’s End and the Isles of Scilly on a clear day, Bartinney Nature Reserve consists of Bartinney Hill and the surrounding heathland and patchwork farmland that Cornwall Wildlife Trust has acquired since the 1990s. Bartinney Castle, at the summit of the hill, is an Iron Age enclosure surrounded by remains of ancient field systems, settlements and a circular structure believed to be an amphitheatre of sorts. The site’s earliest structures are thought to date from the Bronze Age. The name Bartinney (or Bartinè) means ‘the lighted eminence’, or ‘the hill of fires’ ('Bretanow' in the Cornish language). At the start of August 2023, Cornwall Wildlife Trust launched an appeal to raise the funds to secure an additional 53 acres of land neighbouring the nature reserve, to create more space for wildlife. The appeal was a success and thanks to the generosity of Cornish businesses and members of the public, the proposed area of lowland heathland, a habitat rarer than tropical rainforests, has now been added to the site ready to be restored and protected. It will become a vibrant habitat for many species including nightjars, grayling butterflies, adders and numerous bees. Bartinney Nature Reserve supports many of Cornwall’s rare and threatened wildlife species. These include

the Tormentil nomad bee, one of the UK’s rarest bees, only recorded at 12 sites around the UK. Plenty of wildlife can be spotted at the reserve during the winter months. The short-eared owl, unusual amongst owls as it prefers to be out and about during the day, is usually seen here in winter as it escapes the colder temperatures of northern England, Scotland, Scandinavia and beyond. Measuring around 35 to 42cm in length, this owl is mottled yellowy-brown above, paler underneath, and has dark circles around its yellow eyes. As with all owls, a group of this species is known as a ‘parliament’. Other special birds to spot at this time of year include snipe and woodcock. It's a great place for a walk and for spotting such amazing creatures. If you're planning a visit with furry friends, please ensure your dog is under close control.
