Inspired by a feeling of calm quietude and translating it onto canvas.
J
ohn McKinstry is a Cornwall-based artist who has been painting the landscape for as long as he can remember. “It’s something I just can’t imagine not doing,” he explains, “and like most landscape artists, I try to capture those parts of it that most inspire.” For John, these come in many forms: solitary cottages; small hamlets and harbours clinging to the coast; moorland farms stark against imposing skies. His paintings give off a feeling of calm and quietness, which is exactly what he wants to feel when painting them and one of the elements that viewers of his work often comment on. “These are the places that stir in me the emotions I need to feel while I paint and which I hope I manage to occasionally reflect on my canvas.” In 2013, John’s paintings were spotted by the UK’s leading artwork publisher and it was this that allowed him to realise his dream of becoming a full-time artist, supplying high-end galleries across the UK and around the world. Later, in 2022, he became an independent artist, allowing him a more flexible lifestyle as well as a more hands-on approach with collectors of his art. Tucked away in one of Cornwall’s riverside hamlets – very much like those often found on his canvasses – John’s cottage studio is the ideal location for an artist with a love for all things peaceful, and this passion for painting quiet corners now forms an integral part of his day-to-day work.

BRINGING BACK THE Santa’s Grotto returns for another special Christmas at Trevena Cross Garden Centre.

or the first time since 2019, the locally renowned and magical Trevena Cross Santa’s Grotto is back at Trevena Cross. A visit to the grotto in December had become a Christmas tradition for many families across west Cornwall before the COVID pandemic hit, and only now are the team at Trevena Cross in a position to re-introduce this popular community attraction, having adapted their festive plans for the past few years. Garden Centre Manager Nick Hann explains: “We have tried our best to harness the Christmas spirit at Trevena Cross over the past few years, ensuring that there has still been something for families, with free festive photo opportunities, lots of snow and even a glimpse of Santa last year. This year however, we are excited to bring back something we know has been missed amongst our visitors – our Santa’s Grotto! Building it from scratch, we are investing a lot of time, money and spirit into its creation and we just hope we can live up to, or better still, exceed visitor expectations and memories of the grotto!” Trevena Cross will re-establish its partnership with the Rotary Club of Helston-Lizard to host the grotto

over the first three weekends of December and the 20th to the 23rd of December. In return, it will make a sizeable donation to the club for its own nominated charities. Complementing the magical grotto, which will need to be pre-booked online (visit trevenacross. co.uk), will be an undercover 25-stall food and craft market on the first three weekends of December, combining delicious produce and locally made traditional and contemporary gifts and crafts. If you can’t wait until December, beautiful lights and decorations will inspire your festive senses following the seasonal transformation in the shop at Trevena Cross, plus an eclectic range of gifts are ready to kickstart your Christmas shopping. Outside, a huge selection of UK cut and pot-grown Christmas trees will descend on Trevena Cross between the middle and end of November, including the popular £25 non-drop Nordmann Fir (up to six feet tall).
