PROUD TO BE PART OF

Welcome

From the Editor to the July edition of Cornwall Living!

Festival season is upon us and we are all looking forward to a heady summer of food, music and creativity. Cornwall plays host to an eclectic range of festivals and Rosie Cattrell has been searching out some of her favourites in this issue's cover (from page 21). Such is the draw of the Duchy, we are blessed with band lists that rival the biggest of events and food festivals that draw celebrity chefs from far and wide. The biggest dilemma is which one to choose! This issue we are delighted to bring you two Cornwall Living specials. We begin with a section devoted exclusively to dogs and their owners. No-one wants to leave their pup at home, and when you're in Cornwall you don't have to. A plethora of businesses and places to visit in the Duchy cater for canines, so from page 43 we bring you the best in dog-friendly stays, eats and activities. Steve Slimm's work (page 65) expresses the essence of the land and his brand-new website will include both originals and print for sale. Fused glass artist, Claire Harris, is also inspired by the Cornish landscape and her beautiful creations (page 67) resonate with ocean and countryside lovers alike.

No edition of Cornwall Living could be without some foodie favourites. Top chef, Jude Kereama joins us once again (from page 56), reflecting on the huge success of this year's Porthleven Food Festival, in spite of the wild weather! As the sun has been shining for a few weeks now, the fruit at Trevaskis Farm (page 58) is looking ripe for the picking. With its café and food market, you can easily while away a day here in foodie heaven. Wherever your next Cornish adventure takes you, let Cornwall Living be your constant companion.

The Cornish Seal Sanctuary signs off pup season!

The results are in as the Cornish Seal Sanctuary shares its latest figures for the 2022 to 2023 pup season, ending another busy winter of rescuing, rehabilitating and releasing grey seal pups from around Cornwall’s coastline. The Sanctuary, based at Gweek, near Helston, has been rescuing pups from around Cornwall (and beyond) for more than six decades, with hundreds of pups making their way through the Seal Hospital.

Through this season, which usually runs from September to March, a total of 50 grey seal pups were treated by the animal care team, with an incredible 86% release rate! With the first pup arriving on site in August, and the last released at the end of April, it was a longer season than usual, covering multiple issues – from malnourishment and respiratory disease to entanglement. Almost £10,000 was spent on vet visits, as well as £17,500 on drugs and a total of 6,000 staff hours (and 12,000 welly changes!).

Curator Tamara Cooper says: “It’s been another fantastic pup season for the team and I’m so proud of what we’ve been able to achieve. Our main mission as a charity is to support this incredible marine species, and to provide a permanent home to those who can’t be released back to the wild. As we end this season, we’re now prepping for the next one – and every donation counts!”

One of my favourite things about summer in Cornwall is the constant feel of celebration throughout the warmer months. For me, there’s nothing quite like the feeling of complete contentment you get when you’re standing in the sunshine amongst friends with a cold cider in hand, listening to the familiar melodies of a favourite band wash over you in a live performance to surpass any recording as the sun goes down on a perfect day. Down here in the Duchy we are certainly ones to celebrate the good things in life; fine food and drink, theatrical performances to enthral old and young, and live music to get the toes tapping from acts all over the world. Looking back on Cornwall’s celebratory successes last year, I can’t help but look forward to another festival season as we emerge from the chill of a wintery hibernation to dance together in the sunlight. One thing we do very well down here in the South West is food, so it’s no wonder we like to base entire festivals around it. On 21st to 23rd April this year, the ever-popular Porthleven Food Festival drew revellers from all across the county and further afield for a weekend of mouth-watering morsels and toetapping tunes to kick off the summer season. The Chef’s Theatre showcased the talents of the likes of Anthony Worrall Thompson and Jude Kereama amongst a host of others, while seemingly endless street food vendors tempted tongues left, right and centre. Although the rain made a dramatic appearance at times, it certainly didn’t manage to dampen the festival spirit, and acts like Smokey’s King Shufflers, Oh My God! It’s The Church and Old Time Sailors had folk up and dancing late into the evening.

May saw the arrival of the St Ives Food Festival from 12th to 14th down on the sandy expanse of Porthminster Beach, a sandy-toed gathering of artisan tents, food and drink vendors, chef demos from Jack Stein and more, and evening music sessions with bands like The Scribes, Showhawk Duo and Good Old Fashioned Lover Boys to round off the days. Falmouth Food Festival wouldn’t be far behind, and 26th to 28th May would bring crafters, traders, music and art together for a true taste of the town.

Cornwall’s wonderfully weird, awardwinning family festival, The Great Estate, certainly did not disappoint this year, and 2nd to 4th June brought back ‘the most rambunctious garden fete’ to be delighted in once more at the glorious Scorrier Estate, packed to the rafters with magic, marvel and mystery as usual. Workshops, talks, arts and crafts could be found at The Sanctuary in a glade of calm and

With some of the biggest musical names gracing the stages each year, 2023 promises an exceptional line up yet again, with more top-notch headline acts set to join the evergrowing list. From the biggest beats of acts like Hong Kong Ping Pong at Treeline’s dance stage, to Mono’s legendary rock stage, there truly is a band for all tastes, and to be blown away by headliners Orbital, Bloc Party and AURORA,

find your way to the Ade Burt Memorial Stage. Renamed in 2022 after the team’s beloved Technical Director Ade Burt, who help design and build it, the main stage remembers a man who helped to bring Leopallooza to where it is today. The legendary Rogue Theatre will once again take over the woodland to bring an immersive world of theatre, workshops, downthe-rabbit-hole style journeys and songs for little ones and big ones, not forgetting their trademark magic and mystery! If you prefer to dance to your own beat, The Quiet Riot’s silent disco invites shape throwing at its finest, and for the comedy lovers among you The Funny Side comedy tent will certainly put a smile on your face.

For a voyage of culinary discovery and musical mischief, the Rock Oyster Festival at Dinham House from 27th to 30th July promises demonstrations from foodie favourites like Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, alongside mouth-watering taster plates, al-fresco dining and masterclasses for those looking to grow their passions alongside renowned chefs. Set against the stunning backdrop of the Camel Estuary, The Oyster Stage brings us an exciting range of musical acts this year, with artists like Sophie Ellis Bexter, Nile Rodgers & Chic, and a Groove Armada DJ set to bring full-bellied friends together after a day of feasting to feel the love as the sun goes down.

Last year, Boardmasters brought us sunset blinders like Joy Crookes, Palace, Tom Grennan and the unforgettable Kings of Leon, a hypnotic experience that I for one will never forget, and 2023’s line up promises the event’s continued position on the list of the UK’s biggest and best festivals. With a seemingly endless line up of inspirational musicians old and new bursting the seams of the plump weekend line up from 9th to 13th August, this year is set to raise the bar for Boardmasters yet again. With names like Florence + the Machine, Liam Gallagher, Lorde, Cypress Hill, Rudimental, Ben Howard and The Vaccines among a host of other artists filling the bill, it’s understandable that the weekend draws attendees from all over the country every single year to stand together in green fields alive with the sound of summer while the sun sets into the ocean behind them, casting a golden glow over festival faces. Alongside the magic music line up, Boardmasters would not be the Cornish festival that it is without the worldrenowned surf competition that it plays host in the form of the Boardmasters OPEN, so make sure to head down to Fistral beach to catch the action. With an incredible list of events taking place all across Cornwall this summer, my diary is quickly filling up, and I remember how very lucky I am to live in this beautiful county with such a passion for music, food and coming together in fond celebration while the sun shines over our little corner of the south west.

TREVIADES BARTON

A beautiful Grade II-listed period residence set in an idyllic rural location.

Treviades Barton is a truly magnificent six-bedroom home. What strikes you as you approach via the entrance courtyard is its stunning gardens. The lawns are edged with mature borders, while the surrounding trees provide shady spaces in which to relax across a variety of broad terraces, as well as a croquet lawn. The grounds include an adjoining paddock which is ideal for a pony and you are only a little over a mile away from the enchanting Helford River; a sailor’s dream. This area provides some of the best sailing waters in the country with the Helford River providing access out into the waters of Falmouth Bay.

Step inside and Treviades Barton reveals itself as a country house of distinction that has been sympathetically renovated throughout to maintain its historic charm. The kitchen is light and spacious with a range cooker, an open fireplace, and access to the garden, making it a wonderful space for entertaining. A magnificent inner hallway leads to the principal reception rooms which include a drawing room, study and formal dining room as well as the broad principal staircase. The drawing room is a place of peace with views out over the walled front gardens and beyond towards the Helford River. The study, too, enjoys a vista over the front garden, while the dining room offers a formal space for family gatherings, with its fine panelled walls and open fireplace. There are six bedrooms in total, with the master suite including a generous dressing room and en-suite bathroom.

Local facilities can be found in the nearby village of Constantine, which includes a fabulous wine merchant, while the maritime town of Falmouth is just over six miles away.

STYLE Timeless

Concealed blinds are the ultimate way to add the necessary shading, darkening or privacy to a room without detracting from the design of your windows.

West Country Blinds have been designing and manufacturing bespoke blinds for over 25 years. Their experience and high-quality craftsmanship means they can solve the window dressing requirements for both domestic and commercial settings, working closely with trusted manufacturers, to ensure that your choice is the best fit for your home or office.

West Country Blinds has seen a new trend that has come to the fore over recent years; the concealed blind. This is a blind system that can be fully hidden when not required, resulting in a clutter-free design and timeless style. Working with the Blindspace® concealment system gives a wide choice and includes products for privacy, shading, room darkening, temperature and glare control.

Blindspace® products are developed in Sweden, and together with partners such as West Country Blinds, continuously develops new solutions and resources, with both manual and motorised options. We take a look at some these fantastic products that could revolutionise the look of your windows.

Single blinds

The single blind configuration consists of a head box that is installed inside the wall or ceiling. This head box allows easy access for the installation of blinds at any time. Depending on the window and handles, the blinds can either come out on the window side of the box or on the room side. In many cases, multiple motorised blinds are installed in a series, allowing them to be operated independently or together.

HOME 34 | CORNWALL LIVING

Blackout blinds

To achieve optimal room darkening, blinds are crafted using blackout fabric and side channels. To install concealed blackout blinds, boxes are required on three or all four sides of the window. These boxes are the same width, creating a uniform frame around the window. The additional space within the side boxes is utilised when installing blinds that are wider than the window opening as they fit inside the head box.

Dual blinds

Dual blinds can be concealed together, whether that be for small or large windows. There are several configurations available: two free-hanging blinds, one free-hanging blind with side channels, or two blinds with side channels. These combinations cater for different needs such as privacy and blackout, shading and blackout, or shading

and flyscreen. Depending on the desired outcome, dual blinds can be concealed using just a head box, a head box with side boxes, or boxes on all sides of the window.

Corner blinds

Floating corners are gaining popularity in luxury residential projects. When it comes to concealed blinds in corner windows, the most prevalent configuration involves single roller blinds housed in either mitred boxes or butt-jointed boxes. These blinds can face either the window or the room, with the latter option resulting in the smallest gap between the two blinds. Additionally, there are specialised blinds available that feature zippers, allowing them to seamlessly join together in the corner, leaving no gap.

Blinds and curtains

Blinds and curtains are frequently combined, and Blindspace® has created systems to seamlessly integrate manual and electric curtain tracks from wellknown manufacturers, ensuring a sleek and uncluttered design. These curtain tracks can be installed independently or alongside single, blackout or dual blinds, and even in corner applications using curved curtain tracks. In addition, dual curtain tracks can be used to accommodate two sets of curtains on the same window.

Shaped blinds

Blindspace® has a specialised blind system specifically designed for gable-end windows which follow the structure of the roof and the window’s features. Bottom-up blinds can be hidden above sliding doors within custommade boxes and pelmets, or even in the floor, allowing them to be raised using thin wires or side channels. These systems can incorporate either roller blinds or cellular blinds, which occupy minimal space when concealed.

Skylight blinds

Blinds can be hidden in various types of windows, ranging from small roof windows to expansive atrium skylights. The typical setup involves concealment boxes on all four sides of the window opening, with blinds installed at one end and side channels placed inside the side boxes. In cases where concealment boxes are used on all sides of the window, the hem bar of the blind can be concealed at the opposite end of the blind system. This arrangement ensures that only the fabric of the blind is visible once it is deployed.

Welcome to Dogs in Cornwall

The ultimate guide from Cornwall Living

If you're a dog owner seeking the perfect holiday destination or place to explore then look no further than Cornwall. The Duchy offers an abundance of reasons why you should bring your furry friend along for the adventure.

Firstly, Cornwall boasts some stunning natural landscapes that are a paradise for those on two feet or four. Miles of sandy beaches, rugged cliffs, and picturesque coastal paths provide ample opportunities for your four-legged companion to roam and explore to their heart's content. From the iconic St Ives Bay to the charming fishing villages of Polperro and Padstow, Cornwall's diverse scenery is a delight for dogs and humans alike

Cornwall is also known for its dog-friendly attitude. Many holiday homes, from cosy cottages to luxury hotels, welcome pets with open arms; turn to page 51 for some of our favourites. Numerous pubs, cafés, and restaurants are also dog-friendly, meaning you can relax and savour the local cuisine without having to leave your pup behind. We’ve been taste testing some foodie gems; turn to page 52 to discover more.

Cornwall also offers a variety of dog-friendly attractions and activities. Explore ancient castles and historic sites, wander through beautifully manicured gardens, or embark on scenic boat trips along the coastline – all with your faithful furry friend by your side. Cornwall's many dog-friendly areas provide ample space for energetic walks, while dog-friendly beaches allow your pup to frolic in the surf and sand. The county also plays host to one of the country’s top canine emporiums; while you’re here, find all your doggie accessories and more at Slickers Doghouse in Padstow (page 46).

Visiting Cornwall with your dog is an opportunity to create lasting memories and share unforgettable experiences together. With its natural beauty, dog-friendly amenities, and an abundance of things to see and do, Cornwall offers a truly exceptional destination where you and your beloved pet can enjoy a truly ‘pawsome’ vacation.

…enjoy the walkies!

Keeping your pup out of trouble

When out wandering the dunes and moors with our four-legged pals, the last thing we expect to come across is a startled adder. With adder bites in dogs on the rise, it could pay to be prepared whenever out walking with your furry friend. All adder bites require urgent veterinary treatment, but your immediate actions, should the worst happen, can make all the difference to your dog’s recovery.

The Adder Pack provides you with all the necessary information and equipment

needed to administer this immediate first aid. There is also a clear and concise, ‘what to do’ guide to help you through the period between the time of the bite and your arrival at the vets. So, with the Adder Pack in your pocket, you can rest easy this summer on your outdoor adventures with the kit that all dog owners should have, but that you’ll hopefully never need!

For more information contact adderpacks@outlook.com or visit www.adderpacks.com

It always pays to think about what might happen to your pet in an out-of-hours emergency, be that at night or during the weekend. It makes sense, therefore, to find a surgery that covers out-of-hours care, so that you have peace of mind that whatever happens, and whenever it occurs, your pet will be well looked after.

It’s also worth bearing in mind whether the surgery you’re registered with provides 24-hour nursing care, so that your poorly pet isn’t left frightened and alone. Kernow Vets is one example of a veterinary team in Cornwall that provides the assurance of round-the-clock care, meaning that whether you’re home or away, you’ll be able to rest assured that they’ll be there for you and your pet.

Dedicated and professional, Kernow Vets offer animal owners a comprehensive service, and with a Pet Health Club that covers everything you’re likely to need, from a free micro chip and twice-yearly health checks, to a monthly worming plan and much, much more, it’s well worth giving the team a call and guaranteeing you and your pet’s future peace of mind.

Cornish Rock Gin have got you covered with a delicious collection of dazzling drinks this summer.

From dreaming up the idea on Rock Beach while walking Blue the dog, to naming their very first still after a favourite racehorse, Bonanza Boy, life has rocked on for the team at Cornish Rock Gin, who now have a stable of eight fabulous gins and eleven amazing rums, each and every one a delight for the senses.

Today, the distillery resides in a much larger premises in Wadebridge, complete with a retail shop and trade counter, not to mention the new retail shop in Tintagel! Meanwhile the stand at the Tintagel Market outside the Old Post Office every Tuesday and Saturday is still going strong, so you can find Cornish Rock Gin on both sides of the street.

The latest addition to this flourishing Cornish business is the recently opened shop in the centre of Bude, alongside continued attendance to the Bude Farmer’s Market by the canal on Fridays, and the Artisan Market by the tennis courts on a Wednesday and Saturday. With full tasting stations at each and every venue, you are more than welcome to try before you buy, and why not pay a visit and experiment with some of the incredible instant cocktails on offer?

For instance, the Dark ‘n’ Stormy is sure to please the rum lover; simply pop some ice in a Rock Gin Distillery Tumbler and add a shot of Dark Spiced Pineapple Rum and top it all off with Fever Tree Ginger Beer. For the perfect Espresso Martini, chill a martini glass and add a shot of Cornish White Espresso with a splash of Cornish Golden Vanilla Rum, topping up with cold espresso coffee.

Rock Blue Angel Gin is an all-time favourite, just pour Fever Tree Mediterranean Tonic over ice and then add Rock Blue Angel; this delicate gin will sit on top of the tonic so you get the real taste as you enjoy this drink. For the perfect dry martini, the Rock Mellow Yellow Gin is the one; pour chilled vermouth before adding the Rock Mellow Yellow Gin on top and garnish with an olive on a cocktail stick to stir with before sitting back and enjoying!

Come rain OR SHINE

Jude Kereama considers Cornwall’s festival scene, and reflects on another successful (albeit wet!) Porthleven Food Festival.

We all love festivals. Living in Cornwall, we’re lucky to have some of the best in the country right on our doorstep. And whilst each is different, with its own identity and following, what they all have in common is a special feeling that attracts revellers from far and wide.

Here in Porthleven, for example, our very own food and music festival has been going for 14 years, and it just gets better and better every year. In fact, just last year, it won Gold at the Cornwall Tourism Awards for the best and most popular festival!

I remember when the idea first came about. I suggested to some friends of mine that we start a food festival; one of them suggested adding music, and so the first Porthleven Food and Music Festival was born. Together with a very small committee and a lot of locals chipping in to volunteer, the first festival took place on the village’s harbour head. It was blowing a gale and our marquee almost took off! The event was opened by Antony Worrall Thompson and myself to a very packed tent full of local suppliers and locals eager to see what the event was all about. Obviously we thought it was a success, otherwise we wouldn’t have kept it going, and I myself have been personally involved in its annual planning ever since.

FOODIE 56 | CORNWALL LIVING

Today, the festival attracts huge numbers of visitors, who venture to Porthleven to watch the best chefs in the UK demonstrating their incredible skills, as well as the great bands that play on numerous stages around the village. Every chef we have demonstrating is absolutely phenomenal, and this year’s event was no exception. Particular highlights included Tom Barnes, Head Chef at the UK’s number one restaurant, Lenclume, with three Michelin Stars. James Knappett, with two stars of his own, also appeared, as did fellow Great British Menu chefs of mine like Adam Handling, Josh Eggleton, Andy Tuck, Guy Owen, Elly Wentworth, Charlotte Vincent, and a whole lot of other exceptional culinary talents from around Cornwall.

The music was brilliant too, with plenty of different bands and DJs getting the crowds dancing. Over the course of the weekend, there’s always so much to see and do, with plenty of food stalls, feast nights, a farmers market, kids entertainment, and for the real culture vultures, ‘Question Time’ sessions with various artists and chefs. We also host street performers around the harbour head, but perhaps the most impressive thing – that which we’re most proud of – is that all of this is free to enjoy!

Today, my role is to invite the various chefs each year and ensure they’re well looked after. As you can imagine, this is pretty tough work; whilst they are all highly entertaining, it’s a long weekend and so it can become very tiring for all involved. That said, it’s always lots of fun catching up with them all. It’s very rare that we all have the same time off (given the infamous working hours of our profession), and so we tend to get a little carried away!

Porthleven Food Festival kicks off festival season in Cornwall, taking place just after the Easter holidays. We pick this time so that it doesn’t coincide with Flora Day in Helston –– another huge event, just up the road in Helston. It works well, however, given the time of year, it can mean that we are at the mercy of the weather, as this year’s event certainly proved. On the Saturday, it tipped down, but festival goers refused to let that dampen their spirits or stop the crowds coming. It was a very successful festival again. It’s an event we’re all immensely proud of; I already have some great ideas for next year, and I’m looking forward to inviting another top-class line up of chefs to Porthleven. With Porthleven Food Festival done, each year I look forward to other foodie

festivals around the county. St Ives, Rock Oyster, the Padstow Christmas Festival – all are fantastic events that I absolutely love. St Ives Food Festival on Porthminster beach takes place right on the water, as does Rock Oyster Festival, which welcomes festival goers to the banks of the beautiful Camel Estuary.

Padstow Christmas Festival has an insane collection of the best chefs in the UK, and it really gets the Christmas season off to a great start, with amazing demos and a fabulous Christmas market.

market.

To be honest, there are lots of fantastic festivals that I would love to go to but haven’t gotten round to attending yet. You never know – with the weather looking set to shine, perhaps this year I’ll get the chance.

THE SUMMERHOUSE GALLERY

The Summerhouse Gallery is a bright and welcoming space, based in the heart of Marazion. Showcasing the very best of Cornish contemporary paintings (like this one by John Piper, titled 'Moorland Tracks'), ceramics, sculptures and jewellery, the team pride themselves on being open to all and always happy to welcome browsers, children and dogs.

The gallery is delighted to be holding a two-man show this summer for prolific Cornish artists, John Piper and Michael Praed. Peninsula delves into a life-long love for west Penwith; rocky formations, farm cottages, wildlife and harbours –a love that both artists share and are best known for. The work chosen for the show celebrates a variety of styles and subjects that each artist has worked with, some dating back to the 70s and others from recent months.

Peninsula opens on Thursday 15th June with a private view from 6-8pm, where all are welcome. The show will run for two weeks and is open Monday to Friday 10.30am to 5.30pm, Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 4pm.

Taking endless inspiration from Cornish waters

St Just gallery raises £30,000 for local charities

After spending her family summers in Cornwall, artist Phoebe Pocock followed her Cornish ancestry and made her home in Polzeath on the north Cornish coast. It would be during lockdown that she’d pick up her paintbrush once again to channel all the inspiration she received from Cornwall’s wild and rugged coastline to create the most unique compositions, incorporating beautiful sandy beaches and the passion and intensity of surfing the ocean.

“There is nothing like the feeling of being in the sea and being able to create something from it,” Phoebe tells us. “My paintings reflect action and style using dynamic brush strokes. They capture the amazing force of nature and the human figure navigating and riding the waves. I hope my art will enchant all from professional surfers to weekenders and simple ocean enthusiasts, as well as

anyone who wants to bring the wonderment of the ocean into their home.”

With a new collection of eight exclusive, hand-painted wooden bellyboards now complete and available on her website, alongside other works, Phoebe’s talent and eye for the sea is evident, each one depicting an enchanting ocean scene. What’s more, 10% of the sale price of bellyboards will be donated to Surfers Against Sewage! Why not make an appointment to visit Phoebe’s studio, or pop in to her Open Studio on Wednesdays during the summer holidays?

The Jackson Foundation Gallery recently sold the final copy of the limited-edition print Four Seasons in One Day, created to raise £30,000 for charities in the St Just area. Gallery Manager, Fynn Tucker says: “We are over the moon to have reached our £30,000 target. These funds will benefit projects for all age groups throughout the local area including our primary schools, youth centre and those that support the elderly.”

As well as hosting world-class exhibitions by renowned artists, the multi-award-winning Jackson Foundation Gallery in St Just is an active and enthusiastic fundraiser for worthy causes, having also donated over £10,000 to the Chestnut Appeal for Mens Health and over £11,000 for the DEC Ukraine Humanitarian appeal in the last year alone. THE LIGHTSoaring towards

The name ‘Steve Slimm’ has become synonymous with a deep connection to the natural environment. As an artist, Steve has been expressing the feel of our ancient lands for more than four decades, during which time his work has served as inspiration to many an aspiring artist. Indeed, his paintings have become highly coveted celebrations for those who share his connection to the natural world.

“My work has always been far more about expressing the essence of the land, rather than my visual impression of it,” says Steve. “In this way, the interpretation becomes more emotional and spiritual, rather than holding to any strict sense of impressionism.”

Steve has long been a friend of ours here at Cornwall Living, and we were delighted to learn that not only is Steve launching a brand-new website, which will offer lovers of his work the chance to buy both originals and prints with ease, but that in order to celebrate, he has curated three new collections of work.

The Translucent Quality of Light is the first. Featured in UK Art Foundation courses for their quality of light, the works within this collection are typical of Steve’s style –provocative of the varied emotions that are stirred by our landscape in its many moods. They draw on the landscapes not only of Cornwall, but also those along the banks of the Avon near Bristol, another pocket of rural England that’s close to Steve’s heart.

In those paintings, as with all of Steve’s work, there is a real sense of harmony. Horizons are rarely distinct; the world depicted on the canvas assumes rather a misty, even mystical merging of water, land and sky. What’s more, there is a feeling of plantation – with your feet firmly on the ground – and yet you find yourself soaring towards the light. What you won’t find, is detailed topographical interest. If you want that, says Steve: “You can forget it! I have no wish to tell you what a place looks like. I want to tell you how I feel about what I see –what I experience. By doing this, I somehow know I am reminding you, the viewer, of how you feel about it. My work is a reminder of the unchangeable in all of us, and how our connection to the land is somehow part of this. In other words, if my work invokes connectedness in the viewer, then I’m happy.”

If Steve’s approach to the landscape resonates with you – whether you’ve been looking for a beautiful original piece to adorn your wall, or a special gift for the art lover in your life – be sure to visit his new website and discover the collections now available.

CORNWALL A piece of

Handmade in her studio in St Austell, Cornwall, and inspired by the fabulous Cornish coast, Claire Harris’ fused glass creations are each thoughtfully designed and carefully crafted to adorn the homes of ocean lovers all over the country. We speak to Claire who takes us through the beautiful process that goes into creating her stunning pieces.

“As a two to three-day process,” Claire explains, “each piece is created using layers of thin coloured glass, crushed glass and powdered glass. These different forms of glass create the textures and complex details to bring the landscapes alive. It is then heated in a kiln for 13 hours to fuse the crushed glass together, then after cooling and cold working it is returned to the kiln where it is slumped over a mould for another 13 hours to create the distinctive freestanding designs.

“The texture creates a large surface area to allow the reflection and sparkle of natural light. The transparent glass allows light to pass through and the slim footprint allows the glass to be displayed on a narrow shelf as well as windowsills.

“I am greatly inspired by the landscape around Cornwall, which can be seen in the best-selling designs of my Nearly Home Trees on the Devon and Cornwall border, beach scenes in various forms, poppy fields of Polly Joke beach on the north coast, and the iconic Engine House and St Michaels Mount.” At her open studio and shop in the historic Market House in St Austell’s town centre, Claire is able to design and create whilst interacting with visitors. Her shop has also been featured on Channel 4’s documentary, Devon and Cornwall at Christmas! With many of Claire’s sales coming from her website, and daily dispatches of orders all around the UK, why not head online for the perfect way to have a little piece of Cornwall in your home, wherever you may be.

IN STORE A surprise

Nestled at the head of the beautiful Helford River, and lying within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, is the picturesque village of Gweek. It has been a port since Roman times and once had its own customs house and a quayside tin smelting house in times gone by. Today, it is very much still a vibrant Cornish village, with several thriving businesses, including the bustling boatyard, Cornish Seal Sanctuary, Boatyard Café and Black Swan Inn.

It's here that you will also find Gweek Village Stores. Once your average corner shop, it has recently been transformed into a bright, welcoming space that stocks an array of local food, drink and artisan produce. It’s gaining a reputation for its wide range of organic, vegan and ‘free-from' goods, and stocks an ever-increasing range of quality, unique gifts and cards.

Outside in the spacious backyard, you can choose from a wide range of seasonal vegetables, herbs and fruit plants, all organically grown less than a mile from the shop and ready to plant in your own garden.

The owners have re-opened the traditional ice-cream hatch that was used during the 70s and 80s, but with the modern addition of an ice-cream van mural, drawing the attention

of passers-by. Here you can grab a freshly-baked Ann’s pasty, delicious local ice cream, a Penny’s Pie, an incredibly moreish flapjack from the Cornish Flapjack Shack, as well as a range of cakes and coffees.

With plenty of off-road parking and seating outside or in the ‘Little Event Tent’, the shop offers plenty for those staying in the village or passing through by car, bike or on foot. Children love to sit and play on the vintage tractor parked up at the entrance and man’s best friend is fully catered for with dog ice cream and treats available.

Less busy with visitors than other village destinations on the Lizard Peninsula, Gweek is something of a hidden gem. A top insider tip is to pay a visit on a sunny summer Wednesday evening, when visitors and locals alike picnic on fish and chips from Sid’s famous van, whilst the Gweek Silver Band plays on the village green.

PARADISE

Now heading towards five decades of operation, Trevena Cross is an independent, family-owned, one-stop shop for all your gardening needs, with a determination that the plants remain the stars of the show.

Putting plants first stems from the team’s position as growers of more than 90% of all their own plant stocks, which is nurtured on-site in their large 35-acre nursery. The garden centre area is merely the tip of the iceberg – it’s this incredible nursery adjacent to the garden centre that is the backbone of the business, consistently supplying robust, healthy plants.

Growing so much of what they sell means the team at Trevena have the experience and expertise to shape their offering and tailor it to a wide variety of customer needs, and so naturally the business has developed a very loyal customer following over its many decades of operation.

Trevena Cross doesn’t stop at the basics when it comes to plants either; in addition to the diverse range of shrubs, perennials, hedging, and seasonal colour, it also delivers on a range of rare and unusual plants, often appealing to specialist plant enthusiasts and those with a budget to make big transformative changes in their garden landscape.

Many of these plants have earned a special place at Trevena Cross, like the South African

Restios, first introduced to the UK by Trevena Cross several decades ago. Nothing has helped give the garden centre its subtropical association more than its superb collection of large specimen palm trees, olives, citrus, bay and other showstoppers. New stocks of large specimens land on Trevena Cross soil only once or twice per year, and each is one of a kind.

The good news is, whether you’re a visitor to the county or based more locally, a piece of Trevena Cross can also be delivered to your doorstep with the centre’s local and national delivery service. Add to the mix a jungle of houseplants, animal hunt fun for the children, and a comprehensive menu of delicious options at the on-site Garden Kitchen Café, and you really run out of excuses not to be drawn off the A394 and through the gates of this gardener’s paradise.

WE NOW? Where are

Speaking to Jade Beech at RRL, she has been able to provide us with a summary of some recent changes to, and announcements regarding, tax rates and thresholds, and associated points to consider for the current tax year.

First on the agenda are income tax rates: “The annual personal allowance and band thresholds (other than the additional rate) are unchanged for the 2023/24 tax year, meaning the personal allowance remains at £12,570 and basic rate band £50,270. The additional rate threshold has actually been reduced from £150,000 to £125,140; quite a turnaround considering that back in September 2022, the then chancellor (Kwasi Kwarteng) announced that the additional rate of tax would be abolished altogether – an announcement that was quickly reversed!” explains Jade.

Continuing with some valuable information, Jade comments: “When it comes to personal allowance there is a reduction for those with ‘adjusted net income’ over £100,000. The reduction is £1 for every £2 of income above

£100,000. So, there is no personal allowance where adjusted net income exceeds £125,140 – consequently, income in between usually carries an effective tax rate of 60%! The other ‘stealth band’ of the high income child benefit charge applies where one partner’s income exceeds £50,000 – this level is also unchanged.

“Such freezing of personal tax allowances and thresholds that would normally increase in line with inflation is known as “fiscal drag”. As a result of this ‘freezing’, recent reports suggest that one in five taxpayers will be paying higher-rate income tax. This is exacerbated by the current high levels of inflation in the UK. The dividend income allowance allows each taxpayer to receive an amount of tax-free dividend income each year. This allowance was set at £2,000 for the 2022/23 tax year (having started at £5,000), however, has been reduced to £1,000 for the 2023/24 tax year, and to £500 for the 2024/25 tax year.”

Capital Gains Tax (CGT) is something which can affect anyone who is selling, giving away

LIFESTYLE 80 | CORNWALL LIVING
We speak to RRL, experts in accounts and tax advice, in a bid to demystify recent changes in personal tax rates and allowances.
Words by Jade Beech

or disposing of a chargeable asset and making a subsequent a profit or gain. Jade tells us that: “CGT rates are unchanged, and gains on some assets are exempt from CGT, for example the disposal of your main residence (although this is not always the case). Most UK resident individuals are entitled to an annual tax-free exemption, and will not be required to pay CGT if total gains do not exceed the exemption limit for the tax year in which the disposal occurs.

“The annual exemption for the 2022/23 tax year was £12,300, but is reduced to £6,000 for the 2023/24 tax year. A further reduction is planned for next year (2024/25) where the exemption will fall (and be permanently fixed) to £3,000. This change will undoubtedly result in a significant increase in the number of individuals now having to report capital gains to HMRC and pay CGT.”

Inheritance tax is something else to consider and is usually payable at 40% of the value of someone’s estate that exceeds the available nil-rate bands after reliefs and exemptions.

“This rate is unchanged,” says Jade. “The inheritance tax (IHT) nil rate band remains at £325,000 and remains unchanged since 2009/10. If increased in line with inflation, this would be in excess of £450,000 for the 2023/24 tax year; a significant difference, especially considering the sharp rise in house prices in recent years. The residence nil-rate band stays at £175,000. Both have been frozen

until 6 April 2028 at the earliest. The freezing of these bands, coupled with the high levels of property inflation is resulting in more and more estates paying inheritance tax.”

Jade’s final advice is on pension changes: “The 2023 spring budget included various pension measures with a view to supposedly encourage NHS employee retention and recruitment. One notable key change was the increasing of the Annual Allowance (the amount of total of pension contributions (employer and employee) an individual can benefit from in a tax year) from £40,000 to £60,000. This should prompt higher earners to consider their pension contributions and limited company shareholder/directors to revisit cash extraction strategies where employer pension contributions are used. Other changes involved the controversial removal of the lifetime allowance charge – welcomed for those with sizeable pension funds. This may, in theory, represent benefits and opportunities for some, however, specialist and experienced advice should be sought from a pensions specialist before acting. One concern is that the removal maybe short-lived.”

JUMP FOR JOY

Don’t let a hernia hold you back this summer! Mr Michael Clarke, Consultant General Surgeon at Duchy Hospital, gives us the facts.

Summer is upon us; the sea is warming up, the evenings stretching out and the sunshine is showing its face ever more frequently. Cornwall comes alive this time of year, and with so many fun activities and events to keep us busy this season, hernia pain shouldn’t be stopping you from enjoying life. But how do you know when it’s time to get treatment? We speak to Consultant General Surgeon, Mr Michael Clarke, who sheds a little light.

“A hernia is a hole in the muscles of the abdominal wall, through which the contents of the abdomen can protrude," Mr Clarke explains. "Different types include groin hernia (inguinal and femoral), paraumbilical (belly button), incisional (at the site of a previous surgical scar), and less common sites are spigelian, lumbar and obturator. They can be present at birth or occur later in life and can affect one or both sides, often arising at points of natural weakness in the abdominal wall, due to factors such as smoking, obesity, repeated heavy lifting, or coughing.

“Symptoms of a hernia can include protruding, which happens commonly on standing or coughing and may cause an aching or a painful sensation. This will often resolve when lying down, so that the hernia can drop back inside, or by pushing the hernia away. However, sometimes the hernia will not be able to be pushed back and may not drop back inside – this is called ‘irreducible’. In severe cases, this may cause ‘strangulation’ of the bowel or fat resulting in the need for emergency surgery. Alarm symptoms for this

are redness or tenderness over the hernia, with or without vomiting.

“There are generally two treatment options for a hernia, and these are ‘watch and wait’ or surgery. Whilst a hernia will not normally heal on its own and may become bigger over time, sometimes a ‘watch and wait’ policy may be advised. This is generally in asymptomatic or minimally symptomatic male inguinal hernia patients, in those with any type of hernia who are not fit for surgery, or those patients who wish to avoid surgery. On the other hand, surgery may be recommended where the hernia is symptomatic or affecting the patient’s quality of life, to prevent the risk of future hernia strangulation or where a complication has arisen.

“When thinking about which operation may be right for you, there are several options available. These include open surgery, keyhole surgery, general anaesthetic, and local anaesthetic. The right one will depend on the type of hernia, symptoms, and patient choice.
