Spaces SOUL

In conversation with Lauren Gilberthorpe, founder of Lauren Gilberthorpe Interiors (LGI), it quickly becomes clear that there is a wealth of knowledge led by a passion for the craft behind her calm and considered demeanour. Based in the Cotswolds, and backed by a team of industry experts, including her brother Oliver, this is a company with family at its heart and an unbreakable bond with the south west, led by a vision to marry beauty with functionality in a bid to bring individuality into the spaces we cherish most.

So, how did it all begin for Lauren Gilberthorpe Interiors?

My journey began with studying textile design, which served as a gateway to the broader world of interior design. After working with a couple of the UK’s leading studios, honing my skills and nurturing my creativity, and a decade of working in

interior design, I developed the knowledge and expertise necessary to establish my own venture, and nine years ago I launched LGI.

My aim here was not just to create a conventional interiors company; I was looking to create a portfolio that showcased the real personalities of the clients who lived there. My ethos has always been about crafting not ust aesthetically pleasing spaces, but ones that resonate deeply with the individuals who live in them. We strive to delve beneath the surface to truly understand our clients – who they are, how they live, and how they envision their space.

Tell me about your approach to interior design and the overall process. We believe that by integrating contemporary materials and colours with traditional furniture styles, we can develop schemes that are balanced, timeless, and beautiful.

It’s this juxtaposition of old and new, traditional and contemporary, that lends our designs a distinct and layered texture, creating spaces that are as intriguing as they are comfortable.

Our second principle, ‘Live Beautifully’, is all about crafting interiors that are not only visually stunning but also practically durable. We collaborate with our preferred subcontractors and craftsmen to ensure that our designs stand the test of time both aesthetically and practically. It’s not just about creating beautiful spaces, but about designing homes that enhance the day-today living experience for our clients.

We pride ourselves on our ability to fuse traditional English sensibilities with more contemporary nuances. Finding the right balance between the two is both a challenge and a passion of ours, and it is this synthesis that gives our designs a unique identity and a timeless charm. Our process is a journey that evolves from these guiding principles, beginning with understanding our clients’ needs and lifestyle, and culminating in spaces that are thoughtfully designed, beautifully crafted, and uniquely personal.

Talk to me about the family dynamics within the business, and the professional relationships you share. The business is led by myself and my brother Oliver, who manages operations, drawing on his experience in furniture and lighting design in New York, while I lead the creative direction, and our mother Louise actually manages the studio. I think that growing up together has really helped us to understand each other and naturally we work as a team, each focussing on our own talents. We are a very close

family and working together feels very natural and exciting. While our roles within the business differ, we are frequently aligned in our ideas and perspectives, which makes decision-making and creative collaboration both seamless and enjoyable. We laugh a lot. This dynamic helps us to keep the business focused and efficient, while maintaining a warm, family-driven atmosphere that we believe is key to the spirit of LGI.

Take me through your recent project on the Cornish coastline. This was a truly unique undertaking that took place in Gwithian, a stunning location on the Cornish coast. We were presented with the challenge of transforming a former group of barns into a large, luxury farmhouse. With the ever-inspiring Cornish coastline at our doorstep, we found ourselves naturally drawn towards a palette and textures that reflected the surroundings.

We decided on a neutral palette that would complement the existing architecture that made the farmhouse so distinctive and allowed us to harmoniously blend the interior spaces with the natural beauty of the surrounding landscape, resulting in a tranquil and inviting home that truly felt like an extension of the coast. We balanced the need for modern luxury with a respect for the property’s rich history and character, ultimately creating a retreat that felt both timeless and thoroughly welcoming.

Working on this project was a memorable experience for us, and we feel that we successfully achieved a design that not only respected the home’s unique architecture and location but also provided a comfortable and serene living space that the homeowners could cherish.

What does it mean to you personally when you have the opportunity to work here in the south west?

These opportunities resonate deeply with both Oli and me. We were born and raised near Plymouth, so in many ways taking on projects here feels like a homecoming. The coast has always felt like home to us there s an indefinable connection we share with the south west, its crisp air and the awe-inspiring beauty of Devon and Cornwall. The region holds a special place in our hearts, and each opportunity to contribute to its aesthetic landscape feels like a privilege. We are thrilled about the projects we have in the pipeline here and can’t wait to share. To us, these are more than just projects, they are part of a journey that ties us back to our roots!

Alongside your design services, tell me about your latest venture, The Barn. Launched only last summer, The Barn is an online home and lifestyle store carefully made up of a thoughtfully curated collection of pieces, from handmade cushions and throws to vintage furniture, lighting and even original artwork, each item handpicked for

its unique charm and design qualities. The Barn is a wonderful representation of our ongoing mission to bring timeless, beautiful design to as many people as possible.

What do you see for the future of LGI?

We are so excited for the future, and looking to take on an increasing number of projects in Devon and Cornwall. With aspirations to open a new showroom in the region, which would complement our existing one in the Cotswolds, this expansion would provide a tangible presence that brings us closer to the communities we’re so keen to work within. We believe that this blend of local projects and a dedicated showroom would mark an exciting new chapter in LGI’s future.

Over the years, LGI has grown and evolved. Our team now comprises nine dedicated and creative individuals and we are constantly learning and pushing the boundaries of what we can achieve. Our collective mission remains to bring soul, personality, and a deep understanding of our clients’ unique aspirations into the world of interior design.

Here in Cornwall, we are granted some of the most beautiful vistas in the world. The rolling green hills dotted with sheep and cattle, the golden sand beaches that stretch for miles along the coast, the quaint cobbled fishing villages that used to be the backbone of our community. We really do have it all. It’s no wonder then that those who come to settle here in the Duchy, to put roots down, want to do so in a home that complements its stunning topography, a home that works with the land rather than against it. That is where ARK sustainable architecture comes in.

ARK is a Cornwallbased, design-led architectural practice led by founder Lee Crease. Lee has over 30 years’ experience in this industry, and built ARK with the goal of delivering sustainable architectural design solutions to this corner of the world. Lee’s dedication to designing buildings that are complementary to the

countryside, as best as possible, has earned this firm membership to the Association for Environment Conscious Building, a network of individuals and companies with a common aim of promoting sustainable buildings. ARK is also a CIAT registered practice, standing for the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists, the qualifying body for architectural technology primarily across the UK but also internationally.

Lee is a highly motivated chartered architectural technologist, one that champions the importance of sustainability. “I believe that all design should be sustainable and innovative. The idea of sustainability is to ensure that our actions and decisions today do not inhibit the legacy for future generations. Here at ARK we aim to produce inspiring, creative, healthy spaces that are not only functional, but durable and energy efficient. Spaces that have a positive effect on

the environment, rather than negative.” Lee and the team can not only think up ingenious design solutions for any project, they can also specify environmentally friendly and sustainable materials and construction methods to use where appropriate. They regularly advise on technologies such as ground source or air-source heat pumps for sustainable homes, alongside solar panels, green roof systems and mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR), to really build a home that is a part of the surrounding environment and to use the natural resources available to heat, cool and sustain it. Thanks to their experience in this sector, the team have also had training in Passivhaus design software. Backed with over 30 years of international evidence, Passivhaus is a tried-and-tested solution that gives a range of proven approaches to deliver net-zero-ready new and existing buildings. With this information the team can advise on creating low-energy, comfortable buildings constructed to standards that far exceed those of the current Building Regulations.

Lee had a vision of creating a leading architectural practice that would easily compete with larger firms in Cornwall, in a bid to move away from impersonal corporate approaches and instead focus on something smaller, more personalised, and more hands on for each of their clients. Over the last nine years, the business has gone from strength to strength, quickly building up a reputation for producing high-quality designs that still retain that personal touch. ARK was founded in 2014; before this time Lee was an associate

at another Cornwall-based practice for 14 years, so it should come as no surprise that the knowledge Lee has gained over the years enables him to have a unique perspective on the property industry here in Cornwall, which he draws on when advising clients. Lee specialises in bespoke residential developments, residential renovations and extensions, using his experience to create innovative cuttingedge design solutions that seamlessly integrate with the neighbouring properties, landscapes or existing structures. Whilst Lee steers the ship, he is by no means working alone. Since its inception, ARK has increased its team to four full time staff and two freelance members, creating quite the company of technicians, all of which have their own specialities, ranging from architecture and interior design to conserving historical buildings.

There is one home in particular that I myself pass on a regular basis, and every time I do I am in awe of its ingenuity and its ability to somehow integrate itself within the surrounding marram grass and sand dunes that make up the stunning Gwithian owans. his property was a finalist of Best Individual New Home’ at the LABC Building Excellence Awards in 2020, and with good reason. The site in which this home sits is in a highly visible part of the north Cornish coast, ad acent to a triple SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) with regular footfall, especially in the summer months. In their own words: “The end result has created an exemplar, a highly energy efficient, highquality dwelling with a plethora of innovative technologies on board. The original concept

was carried out by ACG Architects, who came up with the beautifully designed home that met the specific requirements of the client. ARK was then appointed by the client to take the project over, which included making some design amendments and then preparing a revised planning package of information. ARK then worked closely with the client and produced all building regulations and construction information taking the project through to a successful completion on site. ARK’s approach was to produce considered, creative solutions to ensure the viability of the development ensuring that it came in on budget and to an extremely high standard. The project was delivered on time and on budget helping to ensure the client was extremely happy with the outcome.”

ARK is proud of the legacy that the team are creating, made stronger every day by their catalogue of homes, continuously helping homeowners do their bit for the environment and create their dream home with minimal damage to this beautiful part of the world. A offers a free consultation to all potential clients here in Cornwall, with an informal

meeting in your home, or at the ARK studio which is located in Newquay, to discuss your ideas and explore the feasibility of the project you have in mind. The face to face, on-site meetings, according to Lee, are “important to understand the site and its surroundings, enabling us to develop a detailed design brief and tailor what services we can offer. We put our heart into all our projects, big or small, and it’s a journey we love going on with all our clients.”

A Sustainable Architecture is a tight knit group of experienced, talented professionals in the business of designing unique, innovative, modern properties for the next generation to call home. Without the carbon footprint, without the demand on local resources, without the reliance on non-renewables, ARK has and will continue to find ways of creating dream abodes with techniques and technologies that work in harmony with this landscape, so if you are looking to start that journey, then ARK is ready to accompany you on the adventure. ark-designs.com

EXCELLENCE Commitment to

In the evolving landscape of property sales, one independent Cornish agency has not just stood the test of time but stands sentinel as north Cornwall’s property expert. JB Estates has 50 years of experience, bringing a wealth of knowledge and insights to the table. As we delve into the agency’s success, it’s clear that this venerable history acts as a crucial underpinning. While such credentials might make for a resting on laurels, this is not the case with JB Estates. As an agency it is nimble, forward thinking and always strives to look after its clients with the utmost care and attention.

Over the years, JB Estates has witnessed the market evolve, adapt, and change in response to various trends, priorities and challenges. The agency has successfully navigated through less favourable periods, never losing its nerve when faced with market difficulties. Such resilience and experience has become even more important in recent times, as the property market has become increasingly

scrutinised and buyers have adopted a more cautious approach than we saw in the post-Covid boom.

We hear from Managing Partner, Josephine Ashby: “Buyers and sellers alike are seeking assurance that they are getting the best value for their investments. Amidst conflicting messages from the media, it falls upon agencies like JB Estates to educate and guide their clients. Operating in a premium market on the north Cornish coast, we strive to provide clarity and transparency, debunking misconceptions and showcasing the true state of affairs. Good advice is not always agreeing with what a vendor wants to hear, and while that might be hard to stomach in the short term, it inevitably pays dividends.”

It might seem an obvious statement to make, but an estate agency does not simply market a property, it is also concerned with achieving a sale. JB Estates actively pieces

together buyers and sellers, finding creative solutions for problems and using their expert knowledge and experience when it comes to negotiations between buyers and sellers in order to keep deals on the table. This approach has allowed JB Estates to quietly hold the market share for distinctive properties of all shapes and sizes across the Cornish property market.

Take Mesmear, located just minutes from Polzeath beach. This iconic four-bedroom Cornish farmhouse (Guide price £1.75M) has been immaculately restored and is a prime example of a unique property that offers rural tranquillity, yet is still close to the surf mecca that is Polzeath. With use of a shared swimming pool, outdoor gym and sensitively landscaped gardens through which a leat gently meanders – as well as a triple garage which has the potential to create further holiday accommodation – this property is as versatile as it is beautiful.

Moving from the traditional to a more contemporary property, Waterhouse (Guide price £3.5M) combines award-winning architecture with futuristic sustainability, thanks to ARCO2’s ground-breaking design. This four-bedroom grand design boasts unobstructed and panoramic views across the Camel Estuary and is the epitome of modern luxury living in Cornwall. It won Best New Build in Cornwall in 2020, and three years on is no less spectacular; ingeniously designed to blur the lines between inside and out, much of the living space is south facing.

Finally, we turn to Skylark (Guide price £1.5M) which holds an elevated position above Port Isaac. While this four-bedroom property bucks the trend in terms of what one might expect from the design of a

Cornish property, it is no less beautiful. Minimalist in design and with a variety of natural materials the high ceilings, wood floors and abundance of natural light make for a unique and desirable property. Combined with far-reaching countryside and sea views overlooking Hayle Bay and the north Cornwall coast, this property currently operates as a holiday let but would be equally suited as an uber chic family home set in a large plot.

It is this diversity of portfolio that makes JB Estates stand out. The properties, however, are not chosen on a whim; a considered approach is always adopted, as Josephine explains: “It is about finding the right product in the right market, and the agency is adept at communicating and connecting with the right buyers. In what has become a more saturated market in recent times, where multiple agencies compete for instructions, we feel that JB Estates stands out in terms of its resources. The agency has a substantial team, ensuring every property receives meticulous attention and management. We believe it is this commitment to quality and customer service that sets us apart. It is essential to emphasise the importance of having a well-crafted plan in this market. Like riding a wave, we encourage our clients to embrace challenges, and to adapt and navigate through the complexities. Flexibility, nimbleness, and maximising assets are the keys to success in a discerning and cautious market such as we have at present.”

One noticeable trend is the increase in properties coming to the market. This surge can be attributed to the traditional market cycle, where the spring through early summer period is the prime window for property

PROPERTY 22

Skylark, Port Isaac

launches. However, it is essential to note that the market is case by case, and factors such as pricing, location, and ambition play significant roles in individual outcomes. Josephine adds: “While the market has transitioned from a seller’s market to a more balanced one, there are still rare instances of intense competition. However, these instances are not as frequent or extreme as they used to be. Generally, the market has shifted in the favour of buyers, giving them more time and choice to make informed decisions. Rising interest rates and limited new mortgage offerings will undoubtedly influence buyer behaviour. Although not a dirty word, mortgages do impact market sentiment and confidence across the board. However, one intriguing factor that has gained significant attention recently is the Energy Performance Certificate (EPC). With soaring energy costs, we are finding that buyers are now paying more attention to EPC ratings, making them a crucial aspect of property marketing.”

With more stock on the market now than in previous years, sales can be slower. With this in mind, if you are looking to buy or sell your property, JB Estates advises that now

is the time to be discerning when it comes to choosing an agent. Beware of offers of low fees and high values. Ask the question, is speed of sale more important than the level of sale? Serious sellers are urged to price sensibly, unless they are happy to be patient and prepared to chance the market.

A large market share and high number of successful sales demonstrates JB Estates’ success; not least of which is in the area of private sales. These continue to hold strong at the higher end of the market, due to a discreet and confidential approach, which is not evident until it appears on land registry. To provide a glimpse into the agency’s achievements, JB Estates has witnessed ground-breaking sales and achieved impressive values for clients in the first half of 2023, despite the challenging economic climate, and the agency’s track record speaks for itself. Whether seeking a contemporary coastal gem, a quintessential farmhouse, or a grand-design dream property, JB Estates’ commitment to excellence ensures a positive and informed experience.

Penwith Gallery, a fellowship founded by some of the most influential artists to cross our shores, can be found nestled within the cobbled back streets of St Ives, Cornwall. This former pilchard packing factory was granted a new lease of life when The Penwith Society of Arts (PSA) acquired it in 1961, in a bid to continue exhibiting their vast array of works from one single location, which is where they still reside to this day. This original collection of artists, including the likes of Dame Barbara Hepworth, Peter Lanyon, Ben Nicholson, Bernard Leach, and Sven Berlin, to name but a few, are a cacophony of creative legends that has inspired generations of artists, and being based in St Ives only solidifies their stature thanks to this town’s rich history in the arts.

Whilst the building itself has, I’m sure, seen more than we could ever imagine, the work that inhabits it is just as captivating. Stepping through these doors you can expect to see myriad collections from lifetime PSA members past and present who exhibit here

all year round, with at least one piece to be on display in the Member’s gallery for you to enjoy. You can also see work from Associate Members, who have three exhibitions a year on rotation. These exhibitions are selected from a collection of submitted works, so from the amazing register of Associates a variety of artists are chosen each time, ensuring a varied and eclectic collection on display for visitors to peruse, and to potentially purchase should the desire arise.

Penwith Gallery is proud to display the works of so many talented individuals, and encourages guests to explore free of charge, a rarity in this day and age, as they believe that everyone should have the freedom to immerse themselves in the world of art and all its forms. Whilst you are being drawn into the creative minds of others, if you so choose, there is the opportunity to buy one or more pieces of artwork that take your fancy.

The gallery’s curators understand the desire to adorn our walls and homes with the art that speaks to each of us on a unique

level. Whether you are looking to liven up your current living space, or start from scratch with a new or second home here in Cornwall, they understand that owning a treasured piece of art is something that lasts a lifetime, and that is why they are proud to be a part of the Own Art scheme. Own Art is a national initiative, supported by the Arts Council England, that makes it easy and affordable for anyone and everyone to buy contemporary art. This initiative allows you to borrow as little as £100, and as much as £2,500, to purchase one or more artworks, with the onus of paying it back over the course of 10 months. There are minimal requirements for this, and as they allow you to take your artwork home that very same day, it’s a great way for art lovers and collectors to add to their collections straight away.

Here in Cornwall we are surrounded by some of the most remarkable homes, from cosy riverside retreats, to contemporary out-of-town dwellings. Developments have

surged in recent years with those looking to reside here in the Duchy, and with this, new homeowners and second home buyers are looking to decorate their abodes with true Cornish art. This is a chance to bring the wilds of Cornwall inside the home, all whilst supporting local artists, which is exactly what Penwith Gallery has to offer. Perhaps a sculpture captures your eye, or a painting depicting the raw and rugged Cornish coast; Penwith Gallery has it all for you to choose from, especially with its rotating exhibitions, giving you something new to discover every few weeks.

As you wind your way through the galleries, admiring the sculpture garden as you go, you come to appreciate the diverse array of paintings, drawings, ceramics, prints and sculptures that make up this wondrous spot. An ever-changing assemblage of successful contemporary artists alongside up-andcoming collectives. In regards to the latter, Penwith Gallery recently launched the Young Penwith Artists programme, where

an artist within Cornwall aged 35 or under is given the incredible opportunity to exhibit at Penwith for a month-long show in August, the height of visitor season. This has become a very important part of the gallery’s regular programming, as it is a chance to promote the work of young local creatives, work that has perhaps been inspired by the PSA’s initial founding members.

Penwith Gallery believes in the lifecycle of art, from artists inspiring artists, to keeping their collections fresh and exciting. The PSA Members exhibition, hosted in their own gallery, changes every eight weeks, and these artists must be from within Cornwall, but the Associates can hail from anywhere in the world, allowing an influx of new inspirations to infuse the New Gallery and the Studio Gallery, which rotate every four weeks. Penwith Gallery also has rentable exhibition slots that are booked by artists who submit a proposal to the PSA Board. The board members are renowned for their creative eye, and their understanding of the art world especially in Cornwall, and they therefore like to have a varied programme combining seasoned professionals, and fresh new talent,

all of which have to provide work that is for sale. It’s a great initiative for those wanting to purchase a one-off or a collectible.

Penwith Gallery is run to this day by practising artists that care deeply about the PSA’s legacy, a legacy that has inspired their own work from the beginning, and continues to draw out an artist in each of us. This community of creatives is what keeps the art world in St Ives, and across Cornwall, alive and thriving against a diminished government support network. It encourages children to experiment with paints, pencils and clay, to get their hands dirty and see what masterpieces they craft. he pedigree of work that is on display here is a testament to the stature that this gallery has earned here in Cornwall, a great inspiration for young creative minds to aspire to, and this is something that you can support. This summer, explore your creative side and take a visit to Penwith Gallery, immerse yourself in the colours, patterns and textures of Cornish life through the eyes of those that live on her lands, and perhaps you will come away with something that speaks to you.

Fire and WATER

The kitchen is the heart of the home. This is a saying that has been passed down from generation to generation, and an adage that you usually hear, funnily enough, in the kitchen. Whoever coined it was not wrong, for it’s where your day begins and where it ends. It’s where families, friends and pets come together to eat good food, break bread and drink wine... sometimes. It’s the one space in the home where dreams are shared alongside devastations, laughs, tears and joy, so why would you want it to be anything less than perfect?

Husband and wife team Tris and Gemma understand this requirement better than anyone, and it’s why they started Wadebridge Kitchens almost 20 years ago. Starting off with ust the two of them, they began their business with Tris carrying out all installations, thanks to his 30 years of experience as a carpenter, and Gemma heading up the showroom, designing and handling all things business administration. And whilst the business

has certainly expanded over the years, both Tris and Gemma prefer to remain hands on and in full control of all projects that pass through their doors. That’s why their team remains small, but equally as skilled. They put their energy into passing along their combined skills to those looking to begin their industry journey, which is why they regularly take on apprentices in their fitting team – so that they might learn from the very best.

Wadebridge Kitchens is, you guessed it, based in Wadebridge. This busy, bustling town in north Cornwall has so much to offer, with a great catchment area for businesses to thrive. Originally a market town, Wadebridge later became a foundry town with local workers focussed on metal casting. It is in the original Foundry that Wadebridge Kitchens now hosts its impressive showroom. Tris and Gemma are eager for interested parties to visit The Old Foundry, as they have a wide variety of displays to explore and plenty to inspire their home-improvement journey. By

meandering through the showroom, clients will get a great sense of what their dream kitchen will look like, from MasterClass Kitchens that focus on traditional hand painted kitchens, to contemporary flat-slab designs and some ultra-modern handleless styles to suit anyone and everyone. The team have been in this building since the very beginning. In fact over the years they have expanded into the building next door, allowing even more displays for the local community to enjoy. For Tris and Gemma, being a part of the Wadebridge community is very important to them, especially when they get to help families source their dream kitchens, bedrooms and studies. Every year the team attend the Royal Cornwall Show, with a full kitchen display in Wadebridge Street, along with other Wadebridge based businesses. Setting up here for the duration allows Tris, Gemma and their team to chat to potential, existing and previous clients in a relaxed, informal setting. It’s a chance for visitors to the show not only to get inspiration, but to have a consultation, explore their ideas and see if they are possible. And with this amazing team, it usually is! The latter is a key venture for Wadebridge Kitchens, as they look to expand

their business after all this time and use their talented fittings team to help clients design and craft their dream bedroom and or study. It is no surprise that homeowners have been putting more time and effort into their home spaces, especially in light of the events of the last few years, and ris and Gemma are excited to offer their services. Their showroom now holds a selection of bedroom and study displays, as well as beautiful kitchens, giving clients an idea of what they could have in their own home, from aura Ashley painted fitted bedrooms, to rbano bedrooms and fitted office furniture, designed to dovetail into any space.

Since Gemma and Tris started the business 20 years ago, it would be safe to say that they have worked on a plethora of projects, all of which require a design eye, which Gemma has certainly honed over the years. “Every brief is different, says Gemma. “Some clients like being fully involved, others want more input. I really enjoy designing within the given space, often re igging the layouts completely to give better flow in the area and create more usable space. It is important to explore all ideas, working together to create the best possible kitchen, bedroom or office space that works for each individual.

The Wadebridge Kitchens team keep abreast of current trends and regularly update the displays and samples. This is a great way to show off new products, with new colours and finishes that perhaps haven’t been available before. They encourage those that are exploring the idea of a new kitchen, bedroom or study to keep up to date with trips to their showroom in order to get their hands on the newest designs available. Over the coming months, the showroom will be displaying a few new products, from stylish bi-fold doors to make the most of those summer days, to pull-out bins and larders with internal drawers for some great storage solutions, keeping your kitchen spotless and clutter free.

Wadebridge Kitchens believe that as well as looking good, your new room, be it a kitchen, bedroom or home office, needs to be practical and well designed. Finding A WAY

WORDS BY DAN WARDEN

Those who happened to read our last edition of DRIFT Abode may well remember Frances Healy. Training in London and managing the interior design there for everything from classic period homes to contemporary apartments, it was the fond memory of a childhood in Penzance that eventually spurred her to bring her expertise to the coastal fringes of Cornwall. Since being here, she has found interior design in the Duchy to be as good as in any part of the country, seeing no reason why anybody need compromise on design, product, quality or service.

Being so far from the design and fashion capitals of London, Bristol, Manchester and other leading hubs, this last point is reassuring, and perhaps something of a myth-buster for those who feel that they must ‘settle’ for a lesser result so far from the city. But saying so means nothing without proof. For this reason, I decided to pick Frances’ brains on a recent project, completed in St Mawes, as a case

study on how her approach – and her belief in the greatness of Cornish design – stack up.

The house in question is sited on a 70-acre peninsula, jutting out into the Percuil River. As an example of Cornish architecture, it’s a great one; having started life as a small Cornish farm, the property has, over the years, extended to include eight bedrooms, four large reception rooms, plus a further threebedroom guesthouse in the grounds. The scale of accommodation combined with the location is simply staggering. It’s one of those properties that many would epitomise as their life-by-the-sea idyll. It’s a dream come true, too, for designers, and Frances was delighted to be approached to take on the property’s complete re-design.

The commission came about, as Frances puts it, “as one of those glorious, out-of-the-blue website enquiries!” The family, half English and half American, bought the property to

Frances Healy

serve as their home for holidays and family visits, and the goal for the re-design was fairly simple. “They wanted a very relaxed, informal feel to the house, with a natural flow between each room,” says Frances. “They didn’t want any one room to feel more ‘special’ than any other. he same paint colours and flooring feature throughout the whole house to provide cohesion and continuity; we simply added different fabrics and furnishings to give each one its personality. Likewise, each bedroom had the same principal of a metal bed, painted walls and simple printed curtain fabrics. The addition of unique vintage pieces of furniture, art and lighting, helped create a slightly different feel to each room achieving the family’s goal of every guest feeling like they had the ‘best’ room.”

What’s really interesting about this project, says Frances, is that although the property directly looks over the water, the client didn’t want a totally ‘coastal’ vibe. “So, whilst there are clear nods to its location, with the large antique pond yachts and other vintage pieces, the location certainly doesn t define the new interior.” And it’s true. Whereas some coastal schemes can feel sparse, even cold, as I flick through the photographs of this beautiful property in St Mawes, I get a distinct feeling of warmth and comfort, all with the ocean just moments beyond the window.

With the interiors starting to take shape, Frances was also commissioned to transform the outdoor living spaces, something that’s becoming increasingly important to homeowners across the UK. Having a

feeling of connection between inside and out can enable a seamless at-home lifestyle throughout the year, and whilst this may still be something of a novelty here on British shores, it’s very much a fact of life for families across the pond. “Their main home is in California,” says Frances, “so outdoor space is very important to them. But Cornwall is not California, so we needed to provide shelter for rainy, cooler days, as well as shade for those hot summer afternoons. When we first arrived, we found a nasty, skinny conservatory on the side of the house. It had to go! I suggested that we take that off and create a much larger, open loggia construction, connecting the outside space to the dining room and kitchen. The clients agreed, and so we set about designing it with a local architect. Now that it’s in place, it’s used all year round.”

One thing that Frances is very good at is earning the trust of her clients, of which this home in St Mawes is a case in point. But as is inevitable on a project of this scale, it didn’t come without its share of difficulties. he first and most obvious, was the American British time difference, making face-to-face meetings tricky. Then, with the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, it would soon become impossible to arrange a get-together in person. A key step in the process, these gettogethers allow Frances to run her clients through ideas and allow them to be ‘hands on’ with samples, and so suddenly being unable to meet in person left her in something of a quandary. “Eventually, I decided to put together a huge box of fabrics, flooring, paint

colours and furniture ideas, and ship it over to the USA. Some of the fabrics I included in the box were already used in their American home, so it turned out I was hitting exactly the right note! From then on, it just got easier and easier to supply them with just what they wanted, as we found ourselves all very much on the same page. As the client said to me,” she laughs, “it’s amazing what can be achieved via WhatsApp and online banking!

“The main problem with the pandemic was getting stock. Fabrics were in short supply, furniture makers were working at half capacity – if open at all – and anything ordered from Europe literally took months to arrive! In fact,” says Frances, “throughout that first summer, I d arrive with a lorry of boxes to unload, and it was really a lottery as to what would be delivered. But we embraced the situation, and the clients were incredibly patient throughout the whole period. For example, when they first visited, we had only ust managed to get a dining table and chairs in place. I usually aim for that ‘ta-dah’ moment when the finished pro ect is revealed, so it was frustrating being unable to do that.”

I’m interested to know how Frances approaches such a large-scale project. How do you add depth to the new schemes, and how much involvement does the client have? “For me,” says Frances, “especially when you

start with a new house that has no furniture at all, it needs vintage antique pieces to add character and depth. In this case, we had a list of items we were looking for. Some of them I managed to source from a great antique dealer that I use in Belgium, but it was wonderful to also support local businesses. I took the clients to visit Lostwithiel (Cornwall’s antique capital!) and sourced some pieces there. We also went further afield to Ashburton, which has a great selection of antique stores. “I love this part of the job,” says Frances. “Taking the client out to find those perfect finishing touches is an element of each project that I absolutely adore. What’s not to love about a day spent shopping?”

In terms of the house itself and the scale, Frances is well versed at bringing projects of all sizes to life, taking properties even as large as this completely in her stride. “I’m a great juggler,” she laughs. “At any one time I’ll usually be running two or three large projects like this, along with another half-dozen or so smaller ones as well. I love to be busy, and I love the buzz of meeting new clients. What’s more, I love seeing new houses and bringing my clients’ vision to life for them. This job –being an interior designer – is something I shall never tire of, so to anybody out there with a project like this that they need help bringing to life, give me a call!”

We are approaching a time when it is no longer enough to simply shop or to eat sustainably. The way in which we live at home is now coming under scrutiny too, which is why more people than ever are looking for ways to ‘do their bit’ in all aspects of their life. Legacy Properties, one of Cornwall’s premier luxury house builders, has been following this trend for some years, and is already renowned for its sustainable approach to home design.

As an example, let’s take a look at House 20 – a contemporary detached four-bedroom residence at the company s ighfields development in Cubert.

First and foremost, this property is stunning. Large, open-plan living and kitchen space combines with four generous double bedrooms, a study, utility space and a garage to create the ideal choice for families, indeed, anybody that loves to entertain.

As is the case with all Legacy properties, thought and painstaking attention to detail has been given to the full specification and design of these homes, from the fully integrated kitchens to the stylish bathroom suites. And whilst exemplary craftsmanship and a luxe finish are found throughout, they are ust two reasons that owners at ighfields are proud to call it home.

Back to finding more sustainable ways to live, and what s interesting at ighfields is Legacy’s thoughtful, energy-conscious approach to design. Every home is built to be as energy efficient as possible, keeping heat where it should be – inside the home. Every Legacy home is warmed sustainably by an air-source heat pump, which warms the heating systems, including underfloor heating to the ground floor. It also fuels the hot water, and when you consider that airsource heating is 50 more efficient than a traditional gas boiler, it’s easy to see why Legacy choose to use it.

Homes here also include integrated, powerful photovoltaic roof panels, which power each property with renewable energy. Legacy combines these energy efficient P panels with optional home storage systems, which serve to dramatically reduce homeowners’ dependence on traditional energy sources, delivering significant long-term cost-of-living savings. What’s more, if the sustainability of what you drive is as important to you as that

of where you live, you’ll be pleased to learn that each new Legacy home is pre-wired to accommodate an E charging point.

Clearly then, sustainability is important. But so, too, are the comforts of home, and yours should be a place where you can relax as easily as you can entertain. In ouse 20, four bedrooms make light of family life, giving everybody the space they need to spread out and enjoy some alone time. When you choose to come together, in the summer, the landscaped rear gardens are tailored to the outdoor lifestyle, inviting long afternoons under the sun, barbeque alight with a bottle of bubbles to hand. Inside, a choice of British made kitchens allow you to have the heart of the home you’ve always fantasised about, and that includes built-in ceiling speakers, ridding your countertops of cluttering radios

Meticulously planned, with the highest quality fixtures and fittings, clean lines, contemporary design, plus a two-year warranty and a ten-year NHBC Buildmark warranty (negating the need for a structural survey and giving you peace of mind before you move in), there are many reasons why those seeking a better way of living choose Legacy. Among them are the locations in which egacy chooses to build, and ighfields is no exception. Found in Cubert, this village is conveniently accessible for commute times to Cornwall’s main business hubs, including Truro, St Austell, Bodmin and Camborne.

For downtime, it’s also within easy reach of some of the county’s best-loved beaches, including the sands of Crantock, Holywell Bay and Perranporth. The village itself is overflowing with character, its thriving community benefitting from a traditional Cornish pub, independent cafés, shops and a fantastic local school.

o put it another way, what egacy offers at ighfields as it does with each of its developments is a lifestyle. It provides owners with a better way of living; not only in the quality of life at home thanks to the hallmark of quality and locale that is the Legacy brand, but in terms of how sustainably each home is fuelled. Built to be lived in, and designed with the planet in mind, Legacy Homes are not just idols of great design; at a time when we are all looking to do more for the planet we live on, they serve as a model for a brighter, greener future.

First founding the business in 2008, experimenting with steam-bent wood in his Cornish workshop, over the years Tom has been fortunate enough to meet more likeminded and creative thinkers. Over the course of that time, those individuals have helped the Tom affield brand to grow and evolve into what it is today – a household name for home design not only in Cornwall, but around the world. Recognised and cherished for their combination of traditional craftsmanship and timeless design, this strong team of skilled artisans craft heirlooms that are a joy to incorporate into any home décor. Indeed, the om affield name has come a long way from those humble origins back in 2008, and as we speak with Tom himself, he provides an insight into what continues to drive this much-loved household name.

How would you describe the design aesthetic and philosophy of Tom Raffield? he design aesthetic of om affield can be described as organic, sculptural, and nature inspired. We draw inspiration from the natural world, incorporating flowing lines, curvaceous forms, and a sense of movement into our designs. Our philosophy revolves around the belief that sustainable design can be beautiful and functional. We strive to create pieces that connect people with nature and evoke a sense of awe. Whether it’s graceful celestial forms enjoyed on beautiful summer nights, or the unique pattern found on a seashell by the shore side, we interpret these organic shapes into our designs. By embracing the wonder of nature, we aim to create products that evoke a sense of calmness, serenity, and connection with the environment.

Drawing on traditional methods and the shapes o nature o a eld finds a way to sustainably push the envelope in the world of interior design.

Why is steam-bent wood used in the designs? What are its benefits?

Steam bending wood is a core technique used in many of our designs. It involves exposing wood to steam, which makes it pliable and allows us to shape it into intricate forms. here are plenty of benefits to steam bending. Firstly, it allows us to create our unique, sculptural designs that are not possible with traditional woodworking methods. Additionally, the process enhances the strength and durability of the wood, allowing us to craft designs that will stand the test of time in bustling households or commercial spaces. Whilst often a little unpredictable, steam bending allows us to get to know the limits of our sustainably sourced timber, whilst being an ecological method of crafting.

Where does the innovation come from for your designs?

Innovation is at the heart of om affield designs. It stems from a combination of influences, including curiosity, experimentation, and a deep understanding of the materials we work with. We constantly push the boundaries of what can be achieved through our craft, exploring new techniques and applications. We are consistently soaking up inspiration from all the wonder found in our natural surroundings; whether it be the forms of nature, or striking architecture, Cornwall is always offering us such a beautiful

array of brilliance to infuse our creations with fresh ideas. Our innovation also comes from within our extremely talented team, who play a crucial role in expanding the limits of each design with their expertise and unique points of view.

How do you incorporate sustainability and eco-friendly practises?

Sustainability is a fundamental principle for us. From the beginning of a design journey, all the way to being placed in its new forever home, every piece has sustainability at its core. We are committed to minimising our environmental impact throughout our design and crafting process. We only use sustainably sourced wood from ethical suppliers, ensuring responsible forestry practices. Additionally, we aim to use only energy-efficient production methods and strive to reduce waste, whilst offsetting any carbon emissions. nce crafted, our designs are packaged in 100% plastic-free, recycled packaging, allowing for a safe, sustainably packaged arrival. We also ensure every design is crafted to honour a long lifespan, allowing our lovely customers to only have to buy once, and treasure forever.

Can you tell us about your new collections for 2023/24?

Whilst we can’t reveal too much, we have some exciting plans in store. We are continuously

developing new collections that expand our range. We hope 2023/24 allows us to showcase a selection of statement furniture designs that further push the boundaries of steam bending. We are always exploring collaborations with like-minded designers and brands to bring fresh perspectives and unique offerings to our customers.

What are the goals at Tom Raffield for the year ahead?

We have plenty of exciting goals that we cannot wait to achieve. A continuous om affield goal is to educate and inspire others about sustainable design practices, fostering a greater appreciation for craftsmanship and the natural world. Whilst maintaining the high standards of

craftmanship and sustainability that defines us, we would love to further establish our brand presence globally – it would be great to see Skipper Pendants all across the globe!

Crafting pieces that stand the test of time and which bring that ethereal beauty of the natural world effortlessly indoors, it s exciting to know that after 15 years of business, om affield remains determined to continue pushing the envelope. As Tom himself puts it: “We have come a long way since our small workshop nestled in the woods, but our journey has been an unforgettable one that I am extremely proud of and cannot wait to continue.”

A changing LANDSCAPE

Once upon a time, and not so long ago, the garden could be defined as one of two things. Either it was given over to jungle, beyond repair and well outside the ability and time constraints of those looking mournfully upon it through the window; or, it became an arena reserved for the green-fingered, with carefully pruned roses, lovingly trimmed honeysuckle and a lawn so sedulously trimmed that to tread upon it required the blessing of those who mowed it.

Now, however, we look at our gardens differently. Whether they embrace the wild spirit of the local landscape, or don a temperament closer to that of an exhibition at the Chelsea Flower Show, as a nation, we have come to treasure them. Perhaps catalysed by the pandemic, which saw homeowners nationwide relegated to the confines of their property boundaries, the importance of an outside space that offers as much as our interiors in the way of sanctuary has never been clearer.

In reality, however, it’s a trend that’s been ticking slowly upwards for a while. Certainly, it’s one that Trevena Cross Nurseries in

Breage recognised long before ‘Coronavirus’ became part of the common lexicon. And while ‘Nurseries’ is in its name, Trevena Cross is so much more than a place where young plants are grown for planting elsewhere.

An unusual hybrid of nursery and garden centre, this family-owned business of nearly five decades puts itself in a unique position. In Cornwall, it is a market leader, with a longstanding and excellent reputation for evolving with the times, adapting to the needs of its visitors and innovating within the horticultural world. With feet in both ‘nursery’ and ‘garden centre’ camps, it strikes a unique balance between the two. As a nursery, it grows more than 90% of the plants it stocks. It does so across 35 acres, and growing so much of what it sells means the team has the experience and expertise necessary not only to shape their offering to customer demand, but to advise visitors on the best plants for them and their homes. Growing on such a large scale also means that the team can provide wholesale for those who need it, supplying plants directly to the trade, even growing plants especially for landscapers and designers. And because they’re able to source and grow a range of exotic specimens,

INSPIRATION 73

there is something at Trevena Cross for absolutely everybody, whether you’re simply seeking a flash of green in your home, or are a specialist plant enthusiast looking to add to your collection.

Being able to offer customers something that goes beyond the expected really stands revena Cross apart. It offers visitors the opportunity to create a garden that’s one of a kind, with scope to innovate and invigorate a space with unusual and unexpected plants. What s more, with a growing ethos that s inspired by owner Graham’s enthusiastic and creative approach to his own garden – ever hand-picking new varieties to try – decisions are made for this business that benefit every would-be garden improver that steps across the threshold.

Now, if you’re updating your own garden in Cornwall, you may well be fortunate enough to benefit from the unique conditions that growing close to the sea offers. Whilst many might see the poor, sandy soils near the coast as something of a disadvantage, there are, according to the team at Trevena, plenty of plants that will absolutely thrive in such conditions. Cordyline australis, for example, are available in a wide variety of different colours, although the standard green tends to be the hardiest. Corokias are another great pick for exposed coastal climes; these medium-sized shrubs from New Zealand complement other plantings very well in the coastal landscape. Other top coastal picks at Trevena Cross include Callistemons, with their unique blooms bringing something different to the traditional Cornish garden, and Convolvulus cneorum, with their pretty funnel-shaped white flowers and attractive, silvery foliage.

Compared to more inland positions, those close to the sea generally offer a milder environment that’s less prone to frost. This opens up the possibility to step into the world of sub-tropical plantings, introducing a piece of the Mediterranean to your garden, or even a snippet from the desert. Assuming that you account for good drainage, a wide range of succulents like Agaves, Aloes and Aeoniums will sit happily along with Cacti for a lowmaintenance desert feel. These are especially popular in line with the recent trend of ‘convenient gardening’, suiting those with busy lives that want an attractive space without the need for a great deal of maintenance. Succulents are a superb solution, providing shape, interest and colour, without the need for pruning or a regimented watering schedule. The best part is that they will take care of themselves, making them especially great additions to holiday homes and second homes, either in pots, baskets or rockeries.

For that Mediterranean vibe, Graham and his team of horticulturalists recommend combining big statement plants like palm trees, Trachycarpus fortunei or Chamaerops humilis, or perhaps an Olea europaea (olive tree). Again, good drainage is a must, especially for olive trees, but provided that’s taken care of, you ll find that these large specimen trees have a sense of grandeur that’s simply incomparable. It is, however, important that you source specimens that have enjoyed years of slow, unforced growth. Fortunately, Trevena Cross brings over a container load (sometimes two) of large specimen trees each year, all from sustainable sources. And although not grown on site, they are certainly worth making an exception for, and to see them finding and thriving in homes across Cornwall and beyond brings immense joy to the nursery team.

As a nursery then, Trevena Cross ticks a lot of boxes, offering a level of variety, scale, versatility and expertise that’s simply not found elsewhere in the county. But what about as a garden centre Well, the first thing to say is that it’s not all about the plants (although they do, of course, feature heavily). From exotic garden varieties and plants that thrive in Cornwall’s unique coastal climate, to an array of houseplants curated to help home owners improve their mood, improve focus and increase productivity, as you might expect, plants are the star of the show. But this is a business that’s about so much more. Again, referring back to the growing trend of outdoor living, finding new and exciting varieties to plant in our gardens is no longer a mere means of improving the view from the living room window. It’s about creating a living sanctuary out of a space in which we actually want to spend time, which is why Trevena Cross curates an excellent and diverse selection of quality garden furniture. With timber, metal and rattan sets all to be found, along with a wide selection of benches, arbours, firepits, water features, authentic chimineas and more, a garden can quickly become an extension of the traditional interior

living space, and with longer summers on the horizon, that’s an increasingly attractive proposition to homeowners, especially here in Cornwall.

Of course, those visiting Trevena Cross won’t necessarily be ‘in the market’ for a new planting scheme or a brand-new set of garden furniture. In fact, many might agree that popping to the local garden centre and simply ‘having a browse’ has got to be one of the nation’s favourite sunny-day pastimes, the leafy rows of plants, the inevitable tinkling of a water feature display, the display of gifts and sundries all providing a pleasant, sensory way to while away an afternoon. his is certainly true of revena Cross. Its dynamic gift section includes a great selection of greetings cards, homewares and keepsakes for those without green fingers. Add to this the on-site Garden Kitchen Café, providing a leisurely means of refuelling, and whether your trip to the nursery is planned or a happy accident as you happen to drive past, it’s a standalone destination for anybody who appreciates the finer points of home and garden improvement. trevenacross.co.uk

When you step into the wild world of Mel Chambers and Alchemy Tiles, you come to realise that beauty still exists in the oldest of traditions, traditions that Mel blends seamlessly with the modern lives we now lead. Mel, who hand carves her signature tiles, began her journey learning from another creative individual. “The technique itself is very, very old,” she explains. “It goes back to the 13th century. I was very lucky to be taught the basic technique, which I have developed further with my own knowledge and skill set acquired over many years. This technique will evolve over time from generation to generation hoping to keep it alive.”

The technique itself is an ancient carving method known as Encaustic, derived from the ancient Greek term meaning ‘burning

in’, which is exactly how these tiles are made. By carving script, shapes and styles out of the moulded clay itself, inlaying it with clay of all shades, and then setting it in a kiln, Mel creates distinctly unique and completely original tiles that will last for generations to come. Mel says that this method has “helped to create millions of handcrafted tiles that you can still see to this day, mostly on the floors in most cathedrals and monasteries around the world.”

When discussing this process with Mel, she mentions that tiles like the ones used in historic architecture were usually created in times of peace. When kings, queens and leaders of their realms weren’t at war, they were glorifying themselves and their accomplishments through the permanence of storytelling. Depicted through hand-carved

inlay tiles, still to be found on display today in museums, if not in their place of origin, these elaborate stories of bygone times are not far from what Mel is doing to this very day; that is, carving messages and intricate drawings of what we hold dear, made to last for another millennia in our homes.

This rigorous process is something Mel goes through with every single tile she makes. It is something that cannot be duplicated easily, and it s why her work is so sought after. Each piece is bespoke, and can be made into whatever size you need it to be, depending on its use. Mel then meticulously handcarves every letter and every drawing from scratch, slowly revealing the final design. Mel’s particular style incorporates elaborate pictures with hidden messages that weave beautifully through the finished product, and it’s not until you look closely that you realise they are there in the first place.

Once these messages have been carved out of the base clay, Mel will then inlay coloured clay over the top, which is how these designs last for so long. And in case there was any doubt, it was not so long ago that an 00-year-old encaustic tiled floor was uncovered via excavation at Exeter Cathedral, in almost pristine condition. This is the very reason that Mel works so hard to keep this technique alive, so that your home can be graced with a product that is precious, stunning and strong. In an age where we

want to own everything instantaneously, and we want it cheap, it’s rare to come across a designer who goes against the grain.

Thanks to such techniques, Mel now designs large scale interior collections that buyers can enjoy from the comfort of their own home. From kitchen splashbacks and intricate bathroom additions, to exterior garden wall features, these tiles can be tailored to you. Mel prides herself on creating pieces of art that are one of a kind, and this is what makes them so special. Not only is the process itself historical and quite remarkable, she works closely with each and every client to discuss in detail how they would like their tiles to look. This one-to-one service is exactly why customers are looking to Mel Chambers to design such personal features in their home.

I always love hearing about any new and exciting projects that Mel is working on, and this time is no different. Mel is currently working on her cascading table centrepieces. Intricately handmade by Mel, these stunning additions to your dining table come in three different si es. Small ( 5cm), medium ( cm), and large (11 cm) and are perfect for holding hot plates, pans and even some candles to set the mood, perfectly designed to be moved around in different formations, and used as you see fit. he collection consists of one central hot plate, four place mats and four coasters, all of which are multifunctional, ready to be taken apart and put back together

They can be completely customisable, depending on the colour, image and style that you prefer for your home, and Mel is currently working on these cascades in different shapes, that being hexagonal, diamond and square.

This exploration into a larger range of interior pieces works well alongside her already growing collection of work, designing beautiful commissions for kitchens and bathrooms, be it small splashbacks, or largescale back boards for kitchen aga’s like the one she is currently working on. It should come as no surprise then that Mel Chambers has rightly been awarded for her craftsmanship, which include the SME Southern Enterprise Award for Best and-Crafted ile Company for the third year in a row in 2022. This, as well as becoming the ‘Made in Cornwall’ Member of the Year in 2021. Mel has been a hands-

on part of the Made in Cornwall scheme for some time now, and after rigorous testing by rading Standards, Alchemy iles received top marks, receiving the gold standard of an authentically Cornish product, a title she is extremely proud of.

Mel has and always will use her platform as a force for good, as she is grateful for the chance to work with charities and conservation projects across the Duchy by creating truly unique and unequivocally beautiful collections, with no intention of slowing down any time soon. You can explore these collections, and an array of her most recent work, by visiting her website. continuation of a CRAFT The

Connecting us to our ancestors, and our lands, through the complex art of carpentry.

It’s hard to fathom that the human race has been constructing timber-framed homes for thousands of years, and whilst this technique is now more popular than ever, it certainly isn’t a new concept.

Ancient Romans, and Ancient Egyptians, began using timber in their roof constructions as far back as 100 BC. That’s over two-thousand years ago, but that isn’t even the earliest recording of such construction techniques, with archaeologists discovering timberframed structures dating as far back as 10,000 years. Indeed, it should come as no surprise that the use of wood as a pliable material was extremely popular, and it was the obvious choice given the abundance of oak. This allowed those living through the Neolithic era to manufacture their own tools for farming and construction – timber tools to build timber houses.

Over the course of time, from then until now, the use of timber in our homes really hasn’t changed much, and is used for the very same reasons. Oak, when harvested, is much more malleable than when it’s dry, which allows for an easier cut. The timber frame is then erected, and the oak dries over the course of several years, giving the structure remarkable strength as the wood hardens. This durability and longevity is why timber-framed homes are so prevalent not just in Britain, but across the world.

In the UK, oak was the favoured wood for many years, but with its increased use for fuel and building supplies, the demand became too much for our forests to keep up with. Softwoods like pine became ever more popular, with a majority of buildings in the 17th century onwards opting for this cheaper, faster-drying alternative.

SUSTAIN 87
INSET
LEFT Strength and beauty
Timber framed homes are popular across the world, for good reason

The demand for oak was further exaggerated through the course of World Wars One and Two, when soldiers were required to fell our oak forests for war supplies, making the reliance on local and imported woods even greater. Over the years, our forests have thankfully recovered, and The Forestry Commission now looks after more than 1,500 forests and woodlands across the country. The majority of oak used in the UK nowadays is sustainably sourced from overseas, and this is the case for the team at Post & Beam.

Tim Simpson and Tom Jubb, founders of Post & Beam, are the brilliant minds behind a growing number of Cornwall’s most beautiful oak-framed buildings. Together, with their expert workshop team, they are putting the natural aesthetic of timber on display, bringing beauty to each project in a way that not only speaks of sustainability, but of the skill and craftsmanship that went into building it from the ground up.

This story began in 2007, when Tom and Tim first crossed paths whilst working on oak frame projects together across Cornwall. In 2020, after six years of said collaboration a vast array of properties, they decided to form the company we now know as Post & Beam td, which is where we find ourselves today. This small but highly experienced team all have a strong connection to the coast on which they live; their workshop even overlooks the shores of north Cornwall, which is a constant inspiration. In fact, when they aren t expertly crafting another bespoke timber frame, you ll find

them wandering the gold-sand beaches, or surfing those a ure waves that are plentiful in this corner of the country.

This draw to the ocean and the land that surrounds it is not ust a means of influence, but rather a reminder of what beauty there is out there. The question arises of how they can design and build abodes that complement it, rather than contrast it. Examples of such successful builds should include Rick Stein’s The Cornish Arms in St Merryn, The Tremenheere Art Gallery near Pen ance, and he Seven Stones Inn on the stunning island of St Martin’s, Isles of Scilly. Their work varies, ranging from residential houses, extensions and cabins, to galleries, community buildings and commercial spaces, affording the team a real plethora of properties with which to design and create.

Speaking of the design process, each project is undertaken in-house by Tom, who has over 20 years of experience working alongside private and commercial clients. He takes each collaboration to heart, working closely with clients and architects to truly understand each element of the design process, enabling himself and the wider team to create a custom timber-frame design unique to each pro ect s specifications. nce this has been agreed upon, Tom then passes the baton to the workshop team, led by Tim, Fred, Dave and Ludo. The techniques required to build such remarkable timber structures is a craft that, as we know, has been around for thousands of years. oned, refined, and perfected over generations of carpenter

and wood worker, it is not an art that can simply be picked up overnight, but rather over years of hard work and dedication. At Post & Beam, such passion for the process is paramount for every team member, and this clearly translates through the quality of the work that leaves the workshop, which is nothing short of outstanding. Even the handmade tools used here have been passed down, and the team refused to give those up for computer programmed saws.

The expert skills required by the team at Post & Beam are essential, especially given the challenging and complex projects that make up their portfolio. These range from traditionally jointed structural carpentry and contemporary timbersteel hybrid frames, to insulated panel systems, timber cladding, as well as incorporating applied gla ing and subframe oinery. hroughout the entire process, the team are more than happy to welcome clients to the workshop, so they can see first hand how their beloved timber frame comes together, from mere pieces of wood, to the structure that will become their home, a place of creativity to be shared, or a place where ideas come to life. Whilst your project is in safe hands with the team at Post & Beam, Tim and Tom understand that having eyes on such large-scale endeavours

can calm the mind, especially when such care and attention is being taken.

From the very beginning, man has relied on nature’s resources to aid in the construction of hearth and home. Whilst this need has remained constant, the approach to sourcing these resources has altered dramatically, through need and necessity, to keep such valuable materials alive. Tim and Tom’s aim is to create inspiring spaces that are designed and built to last, for generations to come, and it goes without saying that the longevity of the buildings stems from the longevity of the resources they’re built from.

Integral to their approach is the care and consideration for all that they do, the people they work with, both employees and clients, and also the environment in which they live. That is why for every oak tree they use, Tom, Tim and the team replant two more in a managed woodland scheme right here in the Duchy. This exciting project, partnered with Plant One Cornwall, is aiming to restore the Celtic oak forests that once thrived on our western shores, ensuring this landscape, our beloved Cornwall, is sustained for the next generation to enjoy. post-beam.co.uk

INSIGHT STYLE A flourish and of

The concept of interior design is one that harks back to way beyond our time. If we strip it back to something simple, the idea of creating functional and comfortable living spaces using the resources available has been around since the first Stone Age, if not before. The placement of the firepit, where families would sleep, and where to keep cooking pots and utensils, are all such basic notions of day-to-day life that have now evolved into what we call interior design today.

It wasn’t until the end of the 19th century that interior design began to emerge as a potential career path, mostly, if not solely, for women. Fast-forward to the present day

and such professions have saturated modern life. Interior designers today are seen as artists, crafters and makers that transform a once dull and lifeless space into a room that is bursting with colour, texture and pattern whilst still retaining remarkable functionality.

Emphasis is placed on seemingly unimportant elements of the home, areas that one wouldn’t usually think to elaborate on. A plethora of questions are now asked of homeowners, like do you have carpet, tile or wood flooring o you want a rug to go with that Will it be wallpaper, paint or tiled walls Will you have art on the walls, sculptures on the floor, and trinkets adorning shelves and window sills How will you dress these windows, as you

Her love for soft furnishings made from rich, stunning fabrics from across the world, paired with her

The tight-knit team at Cotton Mills is made up of four dedicated individuals, each with their own speciality and interest within the world of interior design. Having said that, it is preferred to have a small mix of man-made fibres such as polyester or nylon for example, this is due to their hardwearing qualities and adds to the durability of a fabric. Minimising the wear and tear, and the need to replace said fabrics over a shorter period. We tend to look for recycled man-made fibres nowadays, to do what we can for the environment.”

A love CRAFT for

When I was a child, the concept of a solid wood kitchen was hard to come by. Of course, there were companies that would offer such products, but the homes we lived in had been around for generations, resolute in their ways, from worn paisley carpets to white laminate countertops, contrasted by the glass-fronted light oak cabinets fit to house dark brown glass tea cups. It was a confusing time for homeowners looking to refresh their abode. The tools of the trade, the trade being hand-crafted solid wood kitchens, were few and far between, and in a bid to save money, off-theshelf options, rather than bespoke cabinetry, were taking centre stage. For over 30 years, George Robinson has been going against the grain when it comes to such trends, slowly but surely bringing back the craft, the elegance and the durability that comes with a solid-wood bespoke kitchen.

to

Carpentry is a craft, a technique that has been handed down over the years, and in George’s case through the generations, for it was his great-grandfather (who was also called George Robinson) whose master carpentry skills inspired this career path. As George says: “He made many of his own tools; they are as good now as they were a hundred years ago.” Such sentiments speak volumes for the skills required in this trade, skills that were originally gained through practical experience, guided by those that came before, and not from textbooks.

George Robinson Kitchens was established 21 years ago, when the idea was born to create his own business and provide the local community with kitchens that were built to last; longevity being a common theme, from those handmade tools that were passed down, to the very kitchens themselves, an inheritance to future generations.

Not to mention the highly skilled, expert team of craftsmen that George works with, craftsmen who have been with George since the beginning, his first employees, defining the true meaning of longevity.

With this in mind, sustainability and resources is a discussion that needs to be had, for when you design and build such vast elements of the home you can’t do so without sourcing the materials from somewhere. George understands this, going on to say that: “We use wood from sustainable forests as much as we can, and opt for the most energy-efficient appliances. By creating durable kitchens and furniture that is built to last, I feel that I am able to make a tangible difference that I feel truly proud of. Choosing a robust product made from solid timber is likely to last decades, making it a more sustainable choice for the environment than less durable alternatives.

George’s completely bespoke service is, nowadays, few and far between. He prides himself on this, as he truly believes that understanding the needs

of the client, and the space they have available, is paramount to a successful job. Why waste time building something that is so fundamental to the home, and the happiness of its occupants, if every detail isn t meticulously considered and crafted with expert hands?

When George isn’t in the workshop, he’s at his allotment, a man of the earth in more ways than one: “I love to see these vegetables develop from seedlings to the fully grown produce I enjoy cooking.” This process of germination infuses his home life, as well as his work life, for it’s this journey that keeps him inspired when working on new projects: “When I look at a kitchen space and start to plan its design, I have a sense of excitement that will develop, until my colleagues and I can stand back from a finished kitchen and enjoy the satisfaction of a job well done.”

It is clear that George and his dedicated team still get a great sense of achievement from their work, remarkable after three decades in the industry. Their steadfast commitment to the craft and the stunning products they create is evident given that the majority of their business is through word of mouth, culminating in clients that have been told of the high-quality service George Robinson Kitchens provides. Previous clients frequently return to George obinson for his design services once again, having moved house or purchased a second home, desiring another George Robinson Kitchen or bespoke piece of furniture to adorn their new abode. The community of continued supporters creates a family atmosphere amongst clients old and new, which saturates this team with the utmost gratitude and respect for their line of work.

In addition to designing and manufacturing bespoke kitchens, George also works on a broad range of bespoke furniture, which is made to the same high standards using traditional methods. From bookcases and bed frames, to dining tables and desks, the team enjoy working on all kinds of bespoke furniture pro ects, which offer a great

opportunity to get creative. By working with the team at George Robinson Kitchens, you have the chance to completely refresh your home with fittings that are holistic throughout. All are built to the highest standards, a pledge by George and his team, which undoubtedly demonstrates both the passion and the commitment that George and his colleagues bring to their work, every time. As happy customers, Heather and Chris share: “We bought our first from George Robinson Kitchens around 15 years ago, the second eight years ago, and now we’re onto our third, each one making the most of the space, for beauty and functionality. We keep coming back for George’s design expertise, his team s craftsmanship, and of course the absolute quality of the end result.

Here in Cornwall we are no stranger to the concept of community, to taking care of our neighbours and doing what we can to welcome anyone and everyone with a smile. This is a trait that George and his team have in spades, so is it any wonder that their business goes from strength to strength?

the House RIVER on

Readers of DRIFT will be familiar with the work of Woodford Architecture. The company’s holistic approach to architecture, home and interior design is responsible for some of the region’s most beautiful homes, and speaking with Gavin and Sarah who own and run the company, I’m excited to be shown to one of their latest projects.

Positioned in a beautiful riverside location, this quintessentially Cornish cottage is typical of the county’s architectural heritage. In need of a remodel on the inside, with beautiful original features on the outside that had unfortunately been painted over, Gavin, Sarah and their team were charged with the property’s full restoration and refurbishment. Granite quoins to the rear were stripped of their paint and exposed, restoring the home’s original character and adding real appeal to the rear terrace.

It’s really on the inside, however, that the refurbishment came into its own. As well as ensuring original features were restored, such as the ceiling beams on the ground floor, Woodford set to work on maximising the amount of storage and capitalising on the waterside locale. “Cottages like these are typically modest in terms of space,” says Gavin, “so to maximise storage, we worked with a local joiner to specify furniture around the home. Both the master bedroom and children’s bunk room, for example, had beds especially made to incorporate storage; a new open timber staircase was installed with maximum under-stairs space; even the kitchen was bespoke, designed in partnership with the family and catering to their love for cooking and entertaining.”

In terms of living and dining space, the newly designed interior features a fabulous dining table overlooking the water. A banquette seat provides the perfect place to sit and read a book; also overlooking the river, says Gavin, “you feel like you’re literally on the water.” Other touches that celebrate the locale include a small circular window, and an overall clean, coastal design palette. “It’s tiny details like this that can bring so much to the design of a home,” adds Gavin. And it’s true. Flicking through the pictures of this gorgeous home makes for enviable viewing, and it speaks volumes of Gavin and Sarah’s ability to not only see a client’s vision, but to bring it to life.

In terms of remodelling, the property received a second shower room on the first floor making light of those summer visits from friends and family and to help the owners en oy time on the water without dragging sand and salt through the house, Woodford introduced a utility area, including storage for water gear and a place to rinse off sandy toes. “We also installed rooflights to the first floor, above the new open staircase and in the new shower room,” says Sarah. “This transformed the previously dark interior spaces, flooding both the first and ground floor with natural light.

What Woodford have done is help their clients match the quality of their living quarters with that of the location. Benefitting from incredible natural light, proximity to the water that’s so close you could skim a stone, and in a spot that’s far from the madding crowds of summer, with Woodford’s holistic approach to home design, this home on the river epitomises the very best of coastal living.

Founder Andrew Cook started Just Shutters 12 years ago after noticing a growing interest for shutters in the home market, rightly believing they would go on to be the number one choice for window coverings, rapidly replacing the need for blinds and curtains.

riginally hailing from Exeter, Andrew and his family relocated to Cornwall a few years ago, and haven t looked back since. As a company based in the heart of ewquay in Cornwall, the team at Just Shutters are advocates for protecting the local environment, given that some of the most spectacular expanses of coastline lie right on their doorstep.

hey are dedicated to providing their clients with high-quality shutters that don t cost the earth, whilst still enhancing the elegance of their homes. But what does this mean

Shutters are not ust a stunning addition to your home they are also a very practical one. When speaking with Andrew, he explains why this is the case. “In the dark days of winter, they keep the heat in and screen out the cold and wet, making living spaces and bedrooms cosy and intimate. Windows are a big culprit for heat loss. When internal shutters are closed, they seal the window completely, ensuring that minimal heat escapes through it.

home. What s more this team knows that life is for living, and that accidents happen, which is why these shutters require minimal maintenance once installed, and can be easily repaired should anything get damaged. By crafting a product that can withstand the passing of seasons, lively toddlers and fluffy dogs, you are reducing the need to replace them too often, ergo reducing the waste that goes to landfill. his range of shutters can enhance a house as a refuge from climatic extremes as they improve the thermal efficiency of windows by up to 0 . So, according to Andrew, you can turn down the thermostat, reduce your carbon emissions and lower your energy bills.

At ust Shutters all of their wooden products are FSC certified, not ust the Plantation range. For optimum eco-credentials why not explore their ockWood range, which is custom-made from Paulownia wood. Paulownia is the world s fastest growing hardwood which reaches maturity in ust seven years, as opposed to eak which takes over 25 years to reach full height.

As we know, Andrew recognised the need for shutters over other more traditional window coverings. Whilst curtains had been the epitome of window dressings thanks to their ability to hold warmth, maintaining privacy and allowing homeowners to add their personal touches thanks to a variety

of fabrics and colours, they have taken a backseat in recent years. Instead of stuffy, heavy fabrics that hold dust and dirt, families across the country are turning to a more European way of living. Whilst being easy to install, they have also shaken off their purely functional, minimalist genesis. ust Shutters provides customers with an impressive array of designs, patterns and styles to suit anyone and any home. ou have the freedom to match these shutters with the overarching theme of your interior space, from traditional country homes, to more contemporary minimalist abodes. What s more, Andrew prides himself on delivering such a bespoke service not ust across Cornwall, but nationwide.

he versatility of these shutters means you can explore ranges across the board, from small louvres with a centre tilt rod, to wide-panelled wooden coverings, finding something to suit your style down to the fixtures. In some instances, the shutter route may be the more expensive option, but with that you are getting a product that is better value for money since they are long-lasting and offer better light control. his isn t to say you cannot dress your windows with curtains for decoration, but the shutters will be the real star feature.

especially here in Cornwall, where we have an impressive selection of properties looking to entice visitors in the summer months with their elegant, chic spaces. Whether you are looking to decorate your holiday let, or refresh your own window choices at home, ust Shutters has something for everyone. hanks to the pandemic, the team here are experts in conducting not ust inperson consultations, but those over oom and Facetime, which is great for those who do not reside in their property full-time, making the whole process very streamlined and stress free.

Andrew and the team pride themselves on offering sustainable choices at all points in the customer relationship. All of their standard delivery shutters are transported via sea rather than by air. his reduces the overall carbon footprint when delivering their shutters from the factory to their final home, and they are committed to recycling over 5 of their packaging. And whilst ust Shutters is a national brand, it is proud to be a local company, providing excellent customer service to the whole of Cornwall and beyond.

When it comes to interiors, there has been a renewed focus over recent years on how we fit-out and furnish our homes. We are no longer satisfied with an off-the-peg solution, preferring to look to a bespoke, handcrafted approach that delivers in terms of design and longevity. As designers and makers of wooden furniture, kitchens and cabinetry for over 30 years, o en s work is truly handcrafted from start to finish each piece a unique creation by a Cornish company, gracing homes not only in the Duchy, but across the UK. I met with owner Alan Pearce and designer Gareth enkins who, alongside their 1 -strong workshop team of craftspeople supported by skilled fitters, painters and administration staff, design and create unique, one-off pieces at their workshop in Ruan Minor on the Lizard Peninsula.

aving visited o en s workshop last year, I was keen to find out what the team had been

working on over the last 12 months. Every attention to detail is always maintained at Rozen, down to the very meeting table we sit around to look at concept and design drawings for some new pro ects that Alan and Gareth are keen to show me. As ever, they exemplify the exceptional quality, versatility and craftsmanship that continues to define o en s work and style.

he first is for a kitchen where the layout of the room and the owner s brief required some careful thinking and planning. o en were involved from the start of the design process right through to completion. With full-height geometric ceilings the space was vast and so the design needed to create a flow between the different areas, while maximising space. As all of o en s work is bespoke and each element is made by hand in o en s workshops, the team were able to integrate a number of design elements

that would not have been possible with a mass-produced model. he doors are tulip wood, with oak carcasses: “We use tulip wood as it s a sustainably forested, fastgrowing tree which is particularly good for the environment as it sequesters one of the highest levels of carbon of any tree,” explains Alan. “It is also a very stable wood and a good paint base due its slight furry surface.

he internals are all oak veneer and solid timber ( 0 of our kitchens are such), the same with the drawer boxes… dovetailed of course!” The client wanted everything to have a place, hidden from view to prevent clutter and to have more drawers than normal. This was easily achieved with the addition of drawer dividers and a large pantry. he addition of a solid oak island unit created a focal point at the centre of the room.

Alan goes on to explain that the fashion for modern kitchens is to have them painted, which o en do in a two-part finish. he units are sprayed in the workshop to give an even tone and then hand-painted once installed on site to create a nice soft brush stroke appearance rather than a flat one this maintains the hand-crafted finish rather than a manufactured one. When it comes to colour, there is an endless palette for the client to choose from. Rozen’s design process offers as much attention to detail as the finished product. Either Gareth or Alan will meet with the client to understand the required design and how it will work

functionally within their home. Gareth then creates working 2 and 3 visuals. Each design has a very high level of bespoke detail as Alan explains: “I have measured a client’s existing olive oil bottles, a whole drawer of mugs and even individual knives to ensure that they all fit perfectly within the new kitchen.

nce the client signs off, the technical specification drawings go through to the workshop for production to start. A single cabinet maker will take ownership of smaller obs, while for larger pro ects there will be a team of two or more Rozen cabinet makers who will be responsible from start to finish. Whether it s bedroom furniture, a kitchen chair or table, each piece is handmade and then assembled in the workshop. With kitchens, they are laid out in the exact footprint in the workshop as they would be in the client’s home, to ensure every detail is double checked before it is carefully dismantled and taken for finishing, with the whole build process taking approximately 12 weeks.

If a colour finish is desired, the furniture will be sprayed in o en s own spray bay and will leave the workshop in the careful hands of one of their experienced fitters. hey can also supply electricians or plumbers, although are equally happy to work with the client s or developer s own. Alan tells me: “50 of what we do goes into existing properties, however we are now taking on more commissions from architects and designers who involve us

he second set of plans we look at is for a unique floor-to-ceiling bookcase. his was installed into a newbuild property and was designed to maximise the high ceilings in the open-plan living space, while creating a focal point in the room. he design not only encompasses traditional bookshelves, it also has a set of deep drawers, detailed by the client who worked from home as an aesthetically pleasing alternative to a modern filing system. Brass detail was added to the painted oak veneer, with a ladder rail for accessing the higher shelves and back lights for ambience at night.

hirdly, we look at an impressive media wall and drinks cabinet designed to fit around an existing fireplace. Made of walnut, it is fluted to give a textured effect, while the drinks cabinet and display shelves are oak. hese materials are used throughout the house particularly reflected in the contemporary oak staircase with glass balustrade and timber handrail. Another o en design, it has been configured to allow natural light to penetrate through the risers.

he o en team has seen a massive shift in how consumers are furnishing their homes over the last 15 years with interiors now being much more considered and clients more deeply involved in commissioning furniture. There is a huge rise in the awareness of what is possible when it comes to interiors. Gareth explains that: “ he second strand of our work comes from architects and designers who contact us to fit out new homes in their entirety. Clients are now much more discerning and want their interiors and furniture to be designed in as much detail as the house itself. With the advent of intelligent homes, the furniture and oinery needs to work seamlessly with the wiring and so we often find ourselves commissioned to not only build the furniture but also the wall cladding, ceilings, internal doors etc and, with the advent of more home offices, these too have to sit well within the interior space. With between 30 and 0 pro ects in progress at any one time, whether that be at the design, production, build or finish stage, the o en workshop is always a hive of industry. The design quality and craftsmanship here is a beauty to behold and what is being produced here at Rozen are surely heirlooms of the future.

SPACE

It is no secret that since 2020, we have spent more hours in our homes than ever before. Given that it is now 2023, that’s an awfully long time spent in a space that we may not be truly happy with. The humble kitchen bore the brunt of this sudden change, transcending into a home office, the classroom, gym, or the oom command centre, all whilst retaining its core functionality. Now that we are slowly regaining autonomy, and those external places of congregation are back up and running, it’s about time our kitchens were given a little makeover.

The kitchen is supposed to be a space to gather family and friends for joy, laughter, and sometimes tears. It’s a social hub to share coffee, drinks and delicious meals. Our kitchens are personal to each and every one of us, which is why the kitchens from Kitchen Kit are so special. This company, spearheaded by Director Nigel, specialises in German kitchen brands like Ballerina, whose designs are exceptionally beautiful, unique and long-lasting. Their ranges excel at utilising space and storage, all whilst retaining their modernity and style, tailored to how you want your kitchen space to be.

A Kitchen Kit designer will guide you through the process from start to finish. A visit to the showroom is a chance for customers to see brand new designs from Ballerina. This German brand’s latest

range of living furniture is a concept in which the most functional room in the house breaks free from the traditional confines of a regular kitchen. Instead, kitchen, living and dining are amalgamated into a beautifully designed space for all to enjoy. Depending on the user’s needs, the kitchen can either be a discrete background feature or the main focal point of the room. Utilising space is of utmost importance, as is keeping style and design at the forefront, all whilst embracing this new way of living. The kitchen is no longer just a kitchen, but a space that can be cosy, contemporary, multi-functional and seamlessly elegant, crafting a space that is uniquely yours. Thanks to Kitchen Kit and their regular promotions, you can also fill this space with high-end kitchen products that will bring it to life, from suppliers like Siemens, eff, Miele and Liebherr.

Once a layout and design has been agreed upon by all parties, the team at Kitchen Kit will ensure the manufacturing of your new kitchen is completed down to the smallest detail. HISTORY

It’s 2023, and our society is going through a resurgence of restraint. re ection of instant grati cation, cheap thrills and unsturdy ground. Instead, folks are once again warming to the idea of permanence, of persisting with a product, person or plan in order to build strong foundations and to know that their well-earned time and money is being spent on something that will hold on for generations to come, rather than wither and waste away in a matter of months or years.

Duke Stone of Cornwall has always been a proud supporter of the latter ideology, which is why they are still Cornwall’s goto stonemasons, a trade that has been long withstanding here in the wilds of the Duchy.

At Duke Stone of Cornwall, the team endeavours to provide clients with the opportunity to upgrade existing and newbuild properties with bespoke kitchen worktops, bathrooms, flooring and more. nd as the name suggests, its speciality is stone. Duke Stone is home to skilled stonemasons, and a pride and passion for the materials they work with is evident, but the core of the business lies in their fantastic customer service, providing a welcoming, informative introduction for new clients, ready and willing to take on new challenges. At Duke Stone, the team wor with three different ty es of stone Granite, Quartz and Sintered Stone, but what s the difference

Our relationship with the earth is one that is understood, and respected, by Cornwall’s leading stonemasons.
ABOVE A range of styles to suit everyone

Granite has long been prized for its strength, durability and somewhat attractive appearance, making it a popular choice when constructing buildings. In the 19th century, granite was a major import industry for the United Kingdom, as well as providing our own shores, thanks to our rich resources that could be found in Cornwall, Wales, and Scotland. In the Victorian era, granite was used in commercial buildings to showcase prestige and authority, and after the econd orld War granite in the home became ever more popular due to the reduction of inhouse servants. Homeowners started doing their own cooking, and spending more time in the kitchen, ergo wanting to make it look and feel nicer than it had before. Granite worktops nowadays are almost a staple in most homes across the country, which is where Duke Stone comes in.

Another stone to consider is Quartz. This being one of the hardest minerals on the planet, it’s no surprise that designers and manufacturers capitalised on this and began using quartz as countertops more than 50 years ago. In the early 1960’s an Italian company by the name of Breton SpA developed a way to mould raw quartz crystals with polymer resins, an engineering process that revolutionised the countertop market to rival granite at its own game. The combination of quartz and polymers created kitchen worktops that were generally cheaper than their granite equivalent, whilst maintaining the

durability, porosity and longevity found in the latter product.

Lastly, we have Sintered Stone, a relatively new product in the market of worktops. The roduction of sintered stone differs from that of quartz, in that it is made using all natural materials, rather than combining raw minerals with resins and plastics. Sintered stone is made from natural stone, from a variety of sources, moulded together to create incredibly strong slabs. The process is somewhat limited, due to stonemasons and manufacturers not having the tools to complete the production, but those that do, do so through sintering, which is the mixture of extreme heat and pressure to bond materials and minerals together without melting them. In the end, this creates a product that is a similar price to quartz, and better for your home and the environment thanks to the removal of unnatural resins.

Duke Stone of Cornwall supplies all three, and the team here have immense pride not only in the quality of what they do, but in their ability to meet each customer’s individual requirements, however large or small. The choosing of the material for any new project is a big choice to make, with the majority opting to choose stone, as opposed to alternative materials like wood, metal or 1 olymer, than s to its many bene ts. Each piece of stone supplied is unique, with its own quirks and imperfections as will always be the case with something

WORDS BY HANNAH TAPPING

From its humble beginnings three and a half millennia ago, glass art has undergone some remarkable transformations, driven by advancements in techniques and materials. Today, glass fusion is an art form which has given rise to some incredible installations, artworks and standalone pieces. Jo Downs established her very first gallery in Padstow in 2005. Her work has become synonymous with the Cornish coast, and each year she releases new collections that reflect her passion for the beauty of the area. With galleries now open in Launceston, St Ives, Fowey, Tintagel and Sunningdale, the journey of a glass artist has been one of constant learning and discovery for Jo, as she explains: “One of the things that I love about the glass art is that there are always new things to discover that s why I find it such a fascinating process. From where I

started, some 30 years ago, I’m still learning. At the moment, I’ve been spending a lot of time experimenting. There have been lots of changes in the availability of materials over recent years. I was working with a beautiful German glass that was really lovely to cut which enabled me to produce fluid designs on really large pieces, and they just went out of production!

“Because of that I have been exploring alternative products, including a new enamel. It’s sourced from a UK-based company and has a really different feel to it. I tend to do a lot more experimental work in the winter, and so I’ve been working with this new material which is a very painterly and opaque medium. I’ve always loved painting, and there is a painterly approach in a lot of the kind of sketch work I do. So, I was able to draw inspiration from that and get some interesting textures to reintroduce into glass

both from the enamel and also by adding small pieces of fritted glass to my work.”

Working with this new enamel requires a different approach compared to traditional techniques. It is akin to working with oil paints, where the medium is applied to the glass surface and then manipulated to achieve desired effects. o experiments with various methods, from brushwork to pouring, creating a diverse range of textures and styles. The unpredictable nature of the process adds an element of surprise, as colours interact and react with each other in an almost chemical reaction, resulting in unexpected and mesmerising outcomes. This fusion of traditional and contemporary elements adds depth and vibrancy to Jo’s work.

I’m keen to learn of the new collections and projects planned for this year: “For 2023, we have launched a brand-new series of wall panels inspired by, and named, the Beating Heart of Cornwall; works inspired by gulls on the wing, fish shoals darting through rock pools, rolling waves, samphire and seagrass drifting in the current, golden sands and leaping dolphins.

“Alongside these wall-mounted works is our newly launched Cornish Sunset collection of interior pieces, a bright new series inspired by beach walks on a warm spring evening.

“We have designed a new showroom in our Launceston premises which showcases some of the larger pieces including splashbacks, lighting and tiling. With the new room sets we’ve been able demonstrate how you can use our gorgeous tiles in a bathroom situation, while also showcasing our design service. It isn t always apparent that we offer installations in our smaller galleries as they tend to concentrate more on the giftware. Our new Launceston installations act as a showcase to visitors of the whole range of our work, with experienced staff on hand to talk through the design process.”

o is also able to offer bespoke commissions, as was the case with a new flower and leaf art installation: “I was given a picture of a very floral table made by a Spanish artist. he client commissioned a three-dimensional external wall-art piece to be in keeping with the table. he final creation works on various levels, both in terms of the vibrant colours of the flowers as well as shadows and reflections they create on the wall. I loved working on this project as, while I absolutely love the coast and am obsessed with everything about it and obviously it’s where I get a huge amount of my inspiration, I do enjoy the challenge of a new project, using new colours and techniques.” Bespoke projects tend to start with a sketch and then Jo and her team are able to create visuals which can be projected onto the wall or space where they are intended to go, allowing clients to clearly visualise the finished product.

Jo’s large installations and chandeliers are the backdrop to smaller pieces such as jewellery dishes and tea light stands, all with the colours and patterns of the Cornish landscape running through them.

“Not everyone has the space for large-scale works,” says Jo, “so we always have smaller but equally lovely things on show. New for this year will be little glass fish magnets, so that visitors can pin that Padstow postcard to their fridge, when they are far away and dreaming of Cornwall, as well as the return of our ever-popular soap and lotion dispenser stands. I want everyone who comes to my galleries to take home a little something of Cornwall.”

For those wanting to have a go at the fine art of glass fusion for themselves, both the galleries in Launceston and Sunningdale offer glass-fusing workshops. ere you can spend a glorious three hours creating and designing your very own fused-glass pieces. No experience is necessary, and all glass and equipment are supplied. During the workshop, small pieces of glass, different grades of frit (crushed glass), stringers, powders, and liquid glass are all used. The end product is only limited by the imagination with coasters, vases, dishes, waves, hangings, soap dishes, and framed artwork all possible within the timeframe.

In Cornwall there is a tendency for people, in particular local residents, to buy from Cornish independent businesses, proudly contributing to the local circular economy. Why is that? Here in Cornwall, we are one degree of separation from anyone else who lives here, making the more perceptive conscious of the impact of how and where they spend their money.

We vote with our wallets daily, so who we spend with helps create the world in which we live. By supporting local businesses, we see a direct impact on our local area and the lives of people within it. Spending with a national or international business takes money out of the local community. Alternatively, buying a new kitchen for example from a local carpenter not only means better quality workmanship, and the fact that they are on hand to manage the project, but also that the lion s share of any profit is likely not only to be spent on raising the standard of living of the maker’s family, but also invests in the local economy, which benefits the whole community.

The ethos of buying from local trades, makers and installers has helped make a very strong offering of high-quality products and services in Cornwall. By investing in your community, it raises standards everywhere. As a result of conscious spending, Cornwall boasts an excellent array of cabinet makers, kitchen installers, furniture makers, garden buildings, masons, homeware designers and

builders to name just a few. In turn, this has created a thriving and growing home sector in Cornwall.

For 17 years, I have worked hard to ensure that local people and businesses get a voice and opportunities that large nationals would normally flatten. he recent move to a trend of online purchasing has shown us that priceover-quality driven consumerism only feeds into lower quality, lack of choice and detached customer service. So, we have a conscious choice to feed what we want to see more of.

Over the years, since launching the Cornwall Home Show in 2011, I have seen much change in Cornwall. With more and more people moving to the region, it’s important to keep and share our values; to spend wisely and consciously. Having a local connection with a business can create greater accountability, which is a benefit for both the purchaser and the sector. With globalism being pushed, here in Cornwall we must think wisely about the future we want. Voting with our wallets and spending consciously is one way to ensure we keep choice, quality and customer service.
