PROUD TO BE PART OF

Welcome

From the Editor to the very best of Cornwall Living 2022

It’s time to reflect on another year of Cornwall Living and what a brilliant year it has been! We’ve been delighted to showcase businesses old and new throughout 2022, bringing you the very best that our wonderful county has to offer. As we look to the new year, we have collated some of our favourites for you to enjoy once more. Property is always a highlight of our magazine and with that in mind (from page 10) we revisit some homes of distinction. No issue of Cornwall Living would be complete without some inspiration for your home. From page 19, our thoughts turn to interiors with expert advice and ideas.

Over recent years, Cornwall has become a holiday hot-spot and rightly so. The Duchy’s incredible coastline draws visitors year on year and the accommodation on offer in the county surpasses expectation. From page 24, you’ll find luxury lodges and holiday cottages aplenty, all ready for you to plan your 2023 holiday. Elsewhere you’ll find top tipples (from page 41), amazing art (from page 45), beauty (page 53) and of course our charity focus (page 68) which has highlighted so many incredible causes throughout the year.

Our pages underwent an exciting redesign last year, so the coming pages show the transition to our cleaner, easier to read layout which we hope you love as much as we do.

All that remains is for me and all the team here at Cornwall Living to wish you a wonderful new year and as ever.

…happy reading!

Hannah

P.S. as this is a round-up of the year gone by, please note that any competitions have closed and that any references to dates, events, reader offers or pages may be out of date or irrelevant.

STORM

This enthralling photograph by Liam Alford perfectly represents the drama of a winter storm in Cornwall. As the seasons turn, so too does the mood of the Atlantic, and when it throws its winter tantrums against the stoic, granite faces of Cornwall’s coastline, it’s truly a sight to behold.

This particular image was taken at Botallack Mine near St Just, part of the aptly named ‘Tin Coast’, and is just one of a growing collection of mesmerising stills shot by Liam. All are available to purchase as prints so, whether you’re hoping to infuse your own home with a touch of Cornish character, or are looking to gift something special this Christmas to a loved one who holds Cornwall close to their heart, be sure to follow him on social media and get in touch.

Organisers of an unusual art project launched in April to raise funds for Cornwall Hospice Care, are celebrating its success. ‘Around Cornwall in 38 Churns’ raised an incredible £48,000 for the Cornish healthcare charity!

The project was devised by Sue Dennett (pictured) of Newquay, who also wanted to showcase the county’s talented artists. It was supported by Rodda’s Creamery who donated the churns, as well as Visit Cornwall, The Bowgie Inn at Crantock, Blumen Brand and Digital, and David Lay Auctions, and culminated in the closure of an online auction at 8pm on Wednesday 21st September. The total was announced minutes after the auction closed to a gathering of artists, sponsors and supporters who were at Truro Cathedral where the churns were on display.

“It was an incredible moment when the announcement was made,” says organiser Sue Dennett. “It took my breath away when the figure was revealed. I’d hoped we might

Oli Hoare is the Head of Fundraising at Cornwall Hospice Care: “It’s still soaking in that this extraordinary project raised £48,000. It’s a fabulous amount and everyone involved should be extremely proud of what they’ve jointly achieved. CHARACTERS OF CORNWALL

How would you define ‘Cornish’ property?

Amosaic of patchwork fields, rolling hills, craggy coastlines and mystical woodland, the varying nature of the Cornish landscape never ceases to amaze. It is as characterful as those who inhabit it, and so too are the homes which have been built here over the years, decades, and centuries.

Many who think of a home in Cornwall will, in their mind’s eye, picture a granite cottage – four windows and a door, with a column of chimney smoke suggesting the promise of warmth beyond the threshold. And whilst a cosy piece of stone-built paradise in the heart of the countryside does represent the idyll for some, as we explore the particulars over the coming pages of homes from some of the county's finest property agents, it's clear that the meaning of ‘Cornish’ property cannot be so easily defined.

Of course, there are those that match this description, and one that springs to mind

is Dormouse Cottage, a recent sale by the agents at Jackie Stanley (jackie-stanley. co.uk). Perhaps the most quintessentially Cornish cottage we have ever seen, Dormouse Cottage can be found tucked away by the village green in Penrose, just five miles from the bustling, north Cornwall port of Padstow. Almost flawless with its quality of build, retaining its exquisite Cornish character with slate flagstones underfoot, the home has nevertheless benefitted from a tasteful and comprehensive top-down programme of restoration and refurbishment. And yes, it includes a log-burner!

In truth, Cornwall is home to a full spectrum of property types, from rural cottages and sprawling country estates, to luxury coastal boltholes, ultramodern eco homes, historic townhouses and everything in between. Peruse the listings and recent sales of any Cornish estate agent, and what you’ll find is a tapestry of homes each as unique as the last.

Tredower, sold by Rohrs and Rowe

Take, for example, two properties recently sold by Rohrs and Rowe (rohrsandrowe. co.uk): Seascape in Porthpean, and Tredower in Newtown-In-St-Martin. Whilst both are typical of the stamp of property that buyers have come to expect from this multi awardwinning agency, they both appeal to very different lifestyles. Seascape, with its modern, open-plan design and host of technological features such as underfloor heating, Sonos sound system, CCTV and more, occupies a premier position overlooking the ocean. All four bedrooms benefit from en-suite bathrooms, and all have sea views. The South West Coast Path is accessible directly from the rear boundary, leading to two beaches on either side of the property, and there’s even an outdoor shower for rinsing sandy toes after a day spent exploring them. In short, it’s the perfect property for those seeking a frontline position in order to immerse themselves in the coastal lifestyle.

Tredower, meanwhile, appeals to those who value space, privacy and seclusion, far from the madding crowd. This 16th century farmhouse sits within five acres of stunning sub-tropical gardens on the Lizard peninsula, including a considerable-sized paddock backing onto an attractive stretch of woodland, with a stream running through it and eventually filling a lake to the rear of the house. Also inclusive of a healthy apple orchard, plus a range of outbuildings that could be developed for additional

accommodation, Tredower represents the ultimate opportunity for a buyer to enjoy a life in rural Cornwall – the kind that is becoming increasingly hard to come by. Another example is Lime Tree House, sold last year by Shore Partnership (shorepartnership.com). Located on the eastern edge of Penryn, with 1¼ acres of gardens and grounds just behind the 12th century church of St Gluvias, this historic country home dates as far back as the 1680s. Grade II listed and a former vicarage, the accommodation inside has been at once impeccably preserved and lavishly restored, the original Georgian detailing blending perfectly with a fresh, contemporary style. Incidentally, the property was sold with a separate two-storey coach house, complete with residential consent, giving the buyer scope to further develop what is already an exceedingly exceptional home.

The rarity of such property is, in part, a result of the pandemic. As we’ve all found ourselves spending more time at home than ever before, increasing numbers of homeowners have found themselves in search of more space, to proffer a healthier athome lifestyle. And while the historic homes of Tredower and Lime Tree House are superb examples of their findings, they by no means define the stable of property that appeals to this aspirational shift. Take Netherfield, for instance, a new development of the highest quality, offering the promise of rural tranquillity but with the coast of the Roseland peninsula and cathedral city of Truro just a short distance away. Spacious, thoughtfully designed and wonderfully luxurious, these contemporary detached houses offer stunning accommodation over three floors. Four sumptuous

bedrooms combine with high-spec kitchens and spacious living areas on the inside, with terracing and landscaped gardens –accessible from all floors – providing the perfect environment for al fresco evenings spent entertaining under the stars. Similar developments can be found around Cornwall, being brought to life sympathetically to the environment around them whilst offering those in search of a lifestyle change the perfect opportunity to relocate to some of the country’s most beautiful destinations. Legacy Properties (legacyproperties.co.uk) is behind a number of them, including the homes at Applewood in St Columb, and Longshore in Porth. Whilst homes at both developments are brought to life to offer the perfect blend of luxury and practical living, their locations offer their own distinct appeal. Applewood can be found down a private tree-lined driveway, nestled on the outskirts of the picturesque Cornish town of St Columb Major. Comprising ten exclusive family homes, with a mix of three and fourbedroom detached houses, and three-bed bungalows, all feature large gardens and driveways. The tucked-away position of the development leaves residents to enjoy an air of seclusion, away from the hustle and bustle of the modern world, as soon as they arrive home. Longshore, meanwhile, is a collection of exclusively fourbedroom homes on a frontline position overlooking Porth beach. Think sea views, luxe interiors and an unrivalled location, combining to offer the very best in contemporary coastal living. Inside each house, the interiors have been beautifully brought to life, enjoying the meticulous attention to detail and quality of finish that has become synonymous with the Legacy brand.

Bay on the north coast, this outstanding five-bedroom home demonstrates both modern and traditional elements, blending sympathetically with the local environment. Designed around the site’s unique topography, retaining scale and character, inside can be found a labyrinth of unique accommodation to suit the whole family. Drawing on sustainable energy via a ground-source heat pump, the home feels almost utopian. It’s certainly a rarity on Cornwall’s market, its location, design and adoption of sustainable build features characterising it as a home for the future.

Another such example would be Coastal Retreat, designed and brought to life by Woodford Architecture and Interiors (woodfordarchitecture.com). Moulded into a south-facing grassland slope, this home replaces a former farmhouse with a highly sustainable new build. The design responds to the site, using natural materials including local slate to achieve the sympathetic aesthetic. Inside, the spaces are flexible, functional, and timeless in style, with huge windows and sliding doors seamlessly connecting the inside and out. Really, it comes as no surprise that Woodford were awarded the regional award for Best Residential Property in the United Kingdom, at the 202021 UK property awards!

Speaking of new builds and developments, it would be remiss of us to omit Acorn Property Group (acornpropertygroup.org) from the proceedings. Acorn is the developer behind a number of outstanding

SUNNY BANK, NEW MILLS

A wonderful character cottage situated in a semi-rural location on the outskirts of Ladock.

You’ll find Ladock just six miles east of the cathedral city of Truro and its central position within the county makes it ideal for accessing both south and north Cornwall coasts and beaches. It’s a thriving Cornish village with a popular pub, a primary school, parish church, post office and superb village hall which hosts regular clubs and activities. Truro, which is renowned for its excellent high-street and independent shops, galleries, museum and popular restaurants also has a main-line railway line linking it to London Paddington.

Sunny Bank is a wonderful three-bedroom home, immaculately presented and occupying over an acre of grounds. The cottage exterior is swathed in climbing plants and the sheltered front garden affords a lovely place to sit on a sunny day. Enter through the stable door and an open staircase leads to the three bedrooms above. Original beams and open floor boards reflect the history of the house, with an exposed stone fireplace creating a cosy ambience in the living room and both the dining room and kitchen are sympathetically decorated. ST. AUSTELL BAY Discover

Award-winning property agents Rohrs & Rowe offer their take on the appeal of the St Austell Bay area.

From Gribbin Head in the east, extending to Chapel Point in the west, the magnificent St Austell Bay area includes the communities of Polkerris, Polmear, Carlyon Bay, Charlestown, Duporth, Porthpean, Trenarren, Pentewan and Mevagissey. The natural curvature of The Bay is part of its beauty and provides some protection from the English Channel, making it an excellent choice for numerous water sport activities and safe swimming, as well as being a firm family-favourite destination for holidays.

Sat on the water’s edge is the picturesque port of Charlestown. For those who are familiar with the books of Winston Graham and the two-television series of Poldark that they spawned, then it needs no introduction. It has also been used on numerous occasions as a backdrop to films such as Tim Burton’s Alice In Wonderland and The Eagle Has Landed starring Michael Caine. Its harbour dates back to the late 18th century when entrepreneur Charles Rashleigh developed it from a minor fishing village (West Polmear) into a port for the exportation of China Clay, that the wider St Austell area is so widely famed for.

Charlestown remains relatively unchanged since its construction, hence its appeal as a period location for movies and TV. It also hosts many excellent eateries and pubs as well as quaint places to stay.

Each location around The Bay is also home to a beach. It’s hard to recommend any particular one over another, as each has its own unique appeal. They range from the quaint beach at Polkerris to the private beach of Duporth, accessed by residents only via a coded gate. There are much wider stretches of sand at both Polmear and Pentewan, and Porthpean has a café and toy shop! You can also hire out kayaks and watercraft from various locations to make a sea-based exploration of the coast.

One of Cornwall’s main attractions lies just inland – the world-renowned eco park and educational hub – the Eden Project. Its reputation goes before it and should be on everyone’s bucket list. Over the summer, it is also host to many world class entertainment acts that in 2022 included Bryan Adams, Noel Gallagher, Stereophonics and Diana Ross to name just a few.

Around the area you’ll find some stunning properties which Rohrs & Rowe are marketing.

Methrose

The first is Methrose at Porthpean. The property is a very rare offering to the market, not only due to its magnificent position and views but also because it is unusual to find a fully single storey residence in such a prime location. Many of its rooms and also large areas of the garden are privy to what can only be described as spectacular sea views that stretch out across the waters of St Austell Bay to the magnificent and rugged coastline that disappears in to the distance.

Mevagissey is home to the spectacular clifftop house, Compass Point. Built in 2014, this exceptional architect-designed house enjoys truly world class views across St Austell Bay from its spectacular and dramatic location. The house enjoys three en-suite double bedrooms, with each benefitting from the magnificent sea views via floor to ceiling sliding doors, which also have access onto a full width outside balcony. The living area is a cavernous semi open-plan room comprising the living area, dining room and kitchen. The focal point though are the sea views via multiple floor to ceiling glazed windows and doors that run the entire width of this stunning room – the views can only really be compared to being onboard a large ship! Outside is a full width infinity terrace that provides a vast area

for outdoor entertaining or alfresco dining, providing some of the most spectacular sea views that you will find anywhere on the south coast of Cornwall. A further large terrace is home to a glazed dining pod and the large timber summer house. There is a lawned area that runs the width of the terraces, and three private parking spaces outside of the entrance gates to the property, with a further area of secure hardstanding providing room for further car parking or the storage of a boat.

Just under one mile in-land from the coast is the magnificent Penarwyn House. Built in 1895 by John De Cressy Treffry, High Sheriff of Cornwall, it is a beautiful and impeccably presented Victorian residence set in private grounds. The entrance driveway opens to reveal a broad courtyard and the imposing and handsome house makes a lasting first impression. The whole property is a showcase of interior design, cleverly displaying the size and flexibility of the accommodation at its best. Each room has its own individual styling, which combine as a whole to provide a truly exceptional and unique home. All of the rooms are all very generous – Victorian proportions provide high ceilings making the whole experience very grand. Upstairs the bedrooms are just as impressive, each with a very luxurious feel. In addition to the main accommodation there is a separate staircase leading to three very beautiful apartments that the current owner offers as holiday lettings.

So, if you are looking to buy a home either overlooking or within touching distance of the coast and you haven’t considered the St Austell Bay area, we would highly recommend a visit. Or, if you have a home here and are considering selling, make sure to get in touch to see how Rohrs & Rowe can help.

The stone specialists over at Duke Stone of Cornwall continue to work alongside some of the county’s most amazing kitchen companies, and the team always find that it’s through collaboratively working together that projects can come together to not only meet, but exceed customer expectations.

In recent years, Duke Stone has forged a close relationship with Torben Schmid Kitchens, a story that began with the manufacturing of the designer’s new showroom in Truro. Torben’s modern style gives Duke Stone the opportunity to showcase and combine cutting-edge materials in stylish domestic settings. Their knowledge, combined with his designs, allows Duke Stone to be both creative and contemporary with the materials chosen. Torben himself agrees. “We like to think outside the box when it comes to materials and design, and Duke Stone were the perfect partner when it came to work surfaces. Whatever we asked of them, however challenging, it was always achievable.”

Priding themselves on a strong customer focus, the team at Torben Schmid Kitchens were looking for a collaborative partner who shared the same ideals. “Working with

Duke Stone is easy; they are craftspeople, and passionate about the work they do, and so the finished result is always exceptional. Duke Stone and I have known each other professionally for a number of years. Knowing their work and dedication to each project, they were our first choice when it came to modelling our new showroom.”

Duke Stone of Cornwall are experts in design and manufacture, and well versed when it comes to precisely tailoring your home to your needs, of which their collaboration with Torben, and the role they played in the realisation of his incredible showroom, is a case in point. Able to help bring to life a whole array of different projects, whether it’s a new build, a renovation, or simply the update of a single room, if you’re looking for expert help in bringing your dream space to life, be sure to give them a call!

masonry MASTERS OF

The stonemasons of the Lizard peninsula, otherwise known as Duke Stone of Cornwall, have long designed and supplied bespoke natural stone products, outfitting dream homes and businesses throughout the county with practical and naturally beautiful adornments, from granite and quartz worktops to hearths.

There’s a certain satisfaction to be taken from achieving your dream space, be it the worktops in your kitchen or the floor and wall-tiles of your bathroom. But knowing where to start when it comes to sourcing the best materials, not to mention installing

them to a standard that lives up to your interior dream, can be tricky. As an example of how Duke Stone of Cornwall can help, we take a look inside the recently opened cocktail bar and boutique hotel, Host – based in the centre of St Ives and destined to become extremely popular.

Duke Stone was commissioned to manufacture the bespoke tops for the bar, as well as the unique, luxury vanity suites in the guestrooms. The brief necessitated that the style of these items, and the materials from which they were made, tied in with the wider chic interior style. The clients, we learn, were very specific and focused on the aesthetic, and the ogee edge detail that Duke Stone used on both the bar and the vanity suites, really brought their elegant concept design to life.

Working with local businesses and supporting their visions is something Duke Stone of Cornwall loves to do on a daily basis. Especially here in Cornwall, there is a great demand for surfaces, inside and out,

made of the natural stone that’s so reflective of the county’s rugged natural environment. It’s on these materials that Duke Stone has built its sterling reputation, working with an extensive range of colours and finishes in granite, quartz, marble and limestone, to give homes and businesses alike precisely the look they want. Each member of the team pays meticulous attention to every little detail throughout the course of a project, displaying unrivalled skill in meeting your requirements, as is evident in the new bar and vanities of Host. But what really stands out, is their focus on customer care; with Duke Stone, you know you’re being well looked after.

Duke Stone of Cornwall are experts in design and manufacture, and well versed when it comes to precisely tailoring your home to your needs, of which Host, St Ives, is a case in point. So, whether it’s a new build, a renovation, or simply the update of a single room, if you’re looking for expert help in bringing your project to life, be sure to give them a call!

Create your perfect room with beautiful flooring as the centrepiece.

Family run, South West Carpets specialises in carpets and flooring, with a wide range of options to help you style your home, employing expert fitters with over 25 years’ experience in the flooring trade. We asked Demi, from South West Carpets, why they recommend Amtico over other flooring options: “Luxury Vinyl Tiles (LVT) are an investment, and we recognise this. A well-laid Amtico floor will last many more years than a carpet; it will be easier to clean than a natural product and can withstand a hectic home life.”

Made of resin and plasticisers compressed under high temperatures and pressures to produce a thin, highly durable, cost-effective product, LVT gives a closer finish to that of stone or wood flooring. When it comes to choosing your product and the design of your floor, the team at South West Carpets are with you from start to finish. Demi suggests when deciding on a laying pattern, scale is possibly the most critical factor: “The size, space and pattern should be compatible. A narrow hallway will suit a smaller scale pattern, like our Décor or Basket Weave laying pattern, while a larger space adapts well to bigger designs, like Flagstone.”

With specialist designers on-board, South West Carpets also offer advice on what may be popular in the coming years. “One of the main trends for 2022 is authenticity. People are looking for elements of craftsmanship and heritage in the products they choose. Textures play a big role in this, helping to give flooring longevity. Our new wood embosses in particular give LVT a beautifully aged, reclaimed look, with varied grains and lots of movement. Rustic and painterly features work together, blurring the lines between rural homes and urban spaces, adding warmth and cosiness to any room, regardless of its personality or style,” explains Demi.

As a premier Amtico retailer, South West Carpets is delighted to announce the installation of the Amtico One show area, the only one of its kind in the south west. Here you can view some of the most popular styles and patterns in stunning room settings.

WILD AT HEART

We take a look at the ways in which we can spend a night or two under the stars in the fresh and flourishing wilds of Cornwall this spring.

30 | CORNWALL LIVING COVER FEATURE

There’s something about stepping away from the sturdy arches of our homesteads and venturing forth to lay our heads down under the stars that brings with it a wonderful sense of adventurous nostalgia. As the chill of winter evenings starts to give way to the everincreasing stretches of spring sunshine, we begin to remember the pastimes that brought us so much joy in warmer days.

While there are those who still hold true to the traditional boy scout practice of canvas tents and roll-up sleeping bags hoisted onto their backs to find a place in the wild to set a triangular silhouette against the warm glow of a campfire, we’ve come a long way since those early, intrepid days. Today, more people than ever are able to enjoy the benefits of the camping world, with a multitude of options to suit anyone looking for a taste of adventure. But how did this popular pastime first take root?

During the 1800s, a craze for ‘pleasure boating’ had developed in Victorian London, whereby groups of people would row on boats along the River Thames during fine weather. When the evenings drew in, they took to mooring their boats to set up canvas

tents along the banks of the river so that they could camp nearby and be ready to get back onto the river in the morning. Whilst the people of London camped on the river bank, a travelling tailor named Thomas Hiram Holding was taking camping to the next level. Having travelled across America with his parents during his youth, he’d developed a great love for the outdoors, and as a result took a cycling and camping tour across Ireland in the early 20th century. After documenting his experiences in his book Cycle and Camp in Connemara, and founding the first official camping club, ‘The Association of Cycle Campers’, camping had become a way to escape into the wilds of nature. After the First World War ended, the National Camping Club was formed by Sir Robert Baden-Powell, founder of the Scouts. From this point camping flourished and turned into the leisurely family activity that we are familiar with today, remaining a popular British practice ever since. Cornwall, with its ruggedly wild landscape and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, has made for an idyllic camping destination for many since the beginning, and whether you’re looking to immerse yourself into nature with a bit of ‘wild camping’, find a family friendly spot for some treasured quality time together, or you prefer the comforts of a romantic luxury glamping retreat, there’s an abundance of choice throughout the Duchy.

With the South West Coast Path marking the limits of the land around the county, visitors from all over find themselves drawn to hike the trail with a permanent view, and campsites dotted along the way make for the ultimate places to rest your weary feet before packing up and carrying on the very next day. With an understanding of the archaic need to reconnect with nature that many of us feel, there are a number of campsites spread along our Cornish coastline, ready and waiting to welcome hardy travellers to pitch up in a secure spot and lay their heads for the night. One such sanctuary is Henry’s Campsite (henryscampsite.co.uk), renowned for the spectacular sunsets, breathtaking sea view and its isolated location away from busy roads. The most southerly campsite in Britain, and just a ten-minute walk to the coast path, this small, family run campsite is situated at the top of Caerthillian Valley, and has easy access to some of the most mesmerising beaches in the area: Pentreath, Polpeor, Housel Bay, and even the enchanting Kynance Cove. Glamping, a slightly more recent phenomenon, suits those of us who are seeking a wild experience with a touch of luxury. This usually involves a sturdier structure than the light-weight tents we have become accustomed to today, and is often attached to a feeling of romance and freedom, making for an enchanting escape for couples looking to get away from it all and retreat into the heart of Cornwall while benefitting from touches of warm luxury. Laced with a charming sense of wild tranquillity, Trenoon Meadow Glamping seems a world all its own, carved amongst the floaty meadow grasses and flourishing habitat of the surrounding wildlife. With four bell tents and two ‘pods’, each carefully arranged with inviting beds and cosy amenities, this is certainly a couple's retreat for those in search of a private escape complete with starry nights and sunset skies.

Cornwall's outdoor environment effortlessly supports wellbeing

Modern life is busier than ever and there are times when we all feel the pressure; work, family and chores fill our days while we are constantly ‘connected’ via smartphones and social media. Music and films can be accessed on-demand, 24/7 and gone are the days where we only accessed the news via a daily newspaper or nightly programme. Technology has meant that everything is always accessible, including ourselves, and this in itself is a challenge. Sometimes, we just need to be able to disconnect and certainly our brain benefits from some quiet time where it is allowed to just be. Having this time when we can stop and take a breath and let our souls relax is essential for both physical and mental wellbeing. With this in mind, I’ve been exploring how we can take time for ourselves and, in doing so, I have discovered that Cornwall offers a series of elemental escapes.

EARTH Let’s begin with the earth; it is that which we walk upon and so its very nature is grounding. Walking is perhaps the simplest of things that we can do to help with our wellbeing as it needs little or no specialist equipment and here in Cornwall, we are fortunate to have a host of wonderful environments in which to do so. Strolling the clifftops affords us a bird’s eye view of the ocean and the ability to breathe deeply the restorative sea air. Forest bathing, a Japanese relaxation process where you are simply calm and quiet among the trees, is easily achieved in one of the Duchy’s many verdant woodlands or while strolling through a sub-tropical garden. Exercising outdoors has also become increasingly popular since the pandemic and whether you choose a beach yoga class, a park run or an al fresco boot camp, your body will benefit from both the activity as well as getting a vitamin D boost.

WATER

No mention of wellbeing in Cornwall could be without a reference to water. Its benefits have been much documented over recent years and the rise in popularity of cold-water immersion has been exponential. Form Joe Wicks’ ice baths to the Wim Hof Method (wimhofmethod. com) many of us, myself included, are embracing the thrill of the chill. Jem Wallis from Escape Swims, providers of professional outdoor swimming and cold-water immersion sessions in Cornwall escape-unplugged.co.uk), explains why we should be seeking solace in the waves: “This lifestyle medicine brings you immediately into the present and through immersion in the cold and a focus on breathing, a connection of our bodies and mind. It brings an elevation in happiness, drive and satisfaction. Our anxieties and stresses wash away, resilience builds and our sense of wellbeing improves.” Not only is cold water therapy good for our mood, it has also been proven to help boost our immune systems and has an anti-inflammatory effect that can help with chronic conditions.

If sea-dipping feels a step too far you can always opt for a lido, where the water will be calmer. Bude Sea Pool (budeseapool.

org) is a tidal pool in north Cornwall that is a haven for safe bathing. While cold water swimming is clearly de rigeur at the moment, the restorative properties of warm water should not be overlooked. Jubilee Pool in Penzance (jubileepool.co.uk), while notable for its art deco tidal sea pool, also boasts a geothermal pool heated to between 30 and 35 degrees. Warm water is known to make your muscles relax and is very effect for rehabilitation. St Michael’s Resort in Falmouth (stmichaelsresort.com) has the largest hydrotherapy pool in the south west, with its 21 massage stations and 35-degree water, cocooning the body and facilitating gentle movement, while clifftop open-air dipping is the order of the day in Mullion Cove Hotel’s (mullion-cove.co.uk) outdoor swimming pool. Heated from March to October, here you can float, scull or swim with the warmth of the sun on your face, then when the weather turns retreat to their indoor hydrotherapy infinity pool.

AIR

As we continue our elemental wellbeing journey, the air that we breathe is well worthy of note. Some of you will be familiar with the Danish concept of ‘hygge’, but you may not have heard the Dutch expression ‘uitwaaien’. With no direct translation into a singular English word, it conveys more of an idea –one of open-air living and spending time in wild, and in particular, windy weather. The idea is that when you are outside and the wind is blowing you breathe in the new air, revitalising your body and soul.

I suppose an English version might be termed as ‘getting some air’ or ‘clearing your head’ and either way, Cornwall is a wonderful place to do so. Bedruthan Hotel and Spa (bedruthan.com) sits high up on the cliff at Mawgan Porth where its unique Sensory Spa Garden is something of a Nordic playground that combines thermal therapy with a definite sense of ‘uitwaaien’.

Yoga also teaches us the art of breathing and doing so consciously helps participants to connect with the energy within. Breathwork is meditative, restorative and revitalising…did you know there is even a yoga breath that can replace your daily caffeine fix? During Breath of Fire you inhale and exhale in a continuous breathing pattern. It can last from 30 seconds to ten minutes and those who practice it liken it to a shot of espresso! Golden Glow Yoga in Falmouth (goldenglowyoga.co.uk) holds beginners and improvers classes, turn to page 81 to discover more.

FIRE

Of all the elements this is the one that embraces us in a warm hug; think flickering candlelight during a meditation practice, or a beach fire after a sea swim. Or, for total body immersion, a wood-fired hot tub. Kernow Springs (kernowsprings.co.uk) creates handcrafted wooden hot tubs fuelled by fire where you can soak away your cares. Their roaming eco spa has become a sought-after place of peace at many festivals across Cornwall and you can even recreate your own wild spa with their bespoke rental service.

Heat in the form of a sauna has been proven to have myriad health benefits. You’ll find saunas in most spas across Cornwall, but I came across one that’s unique in its location. The Sauna Society (sauna-society.com) overlooks the ocean at Watergate Bay and is inspired by Finnish sauna culture. It can be rented throughout the year by individuals or private groups and they also run restorative workshops combining breathwork, yoga, sauna and ice baths, all in a truly elemental experience.

Wherever your find your restorative moment of calm, be it in a traditional spa, on a clifftop, in the ocean or from the simple act of a walk in the countryside, embracing the elements in Cornwall is good for body, mind and soul.

ARRIVESA master chef

Treguddick Distillery is all about experiences that bring taste, quality and innovation to the table with the best ingredients the south west has to offer. To elevate this stance even further, Tom Elson-Knight will become a member of the team in September. His credentials are impeccable, having appeared in the 2019 series of MasterChef where he made it to the final, followed by appearances at pop-up shows around the UK with Salt Kitchen.

Putting his itinerant lifestyle on hold, Tom explains: “Treguddick is an incredible and unique venue with bags of potential, and I am really excited to take the kitchen to the next level. I have already begun working with the team on our first events and I have been delighted to put together a five-course menu for the first anniversary of Treguddick on November 5th.”

Opened in October last year, Treguddick is located just outside of Launceston. In 2019 the barn was transformed into a beautiful and versatile venue, perfect for events, days out and memorable experiences. The captivating distillery tour and tasting experiences are always popular, with a bar stocked with over 40 bottles from English Spirit’s premium range. Not forgetting the restaurant where you can enjoy a unique dining experience.

‘Treguddick’s Epicurean Adventure’, as the venue’s first anniversary event is called, will see a five-course adventure menu that follows the journey of founder and Master Distiller, Dr John. From his first still, commissioned over ten years ago, John realised there was a gap in the market for genuinely high-quality spirits. Suitably galvanised, he set out to bring the methodology of distilling firmly into the 21st century. His creations have won the most prestigious awards at leading international spirit competitions and he is consistently leading innovation in the spirit’s market. In fact, he was first in the UK to distil rum, sambuca and baijiu, and has developed worldleading techniques for extracting flavours and accelerating ageing processes. The adventure evening will see the unveiling of the next venture with the final course!

The event takes place on Saturday 5th November, with booking details available on the Treguddick website.

TIPPLES

When Copperfish Distillery opened its doors four years ago on Buller Quay in East Looe, the founders were keen to create great tasting, truly authentic Cornish drinks with a plan to grow the business, developing local employment and supporting the local economy. Four years on and the team of Bill, Jemma, Rob and Andy still share that plan, along with their quest of helping to put Looe on the Cornish food and drink map. And why not? There are some truly fabulous restaurants, hotels and producers in the locality, including The Sardine Factory, The Sail Loft, great tapas at The Portbyhan Hotel, fish and chips at The Coddy Shack, along with some of best pasties in the county including Sarah’s, a firm favourite.

EXPERIENCE

DID YOU KNOW?

Not only does Copperfish distil their own gin and rum, they also make Cornish Moonshine and, if you love the Copperfish logo as much as we do, they’ve got some cool merchandise on offer too!

At the heart of what they do is great taste and quality. Rob, the distiller works tirelessly to create the best drinks they can by keeping to a simple mantra: “proper spirits made proper.” In essence, this means they don’t cut corners and use the best ingredients and methods they can. Take their rum for example, Copperfish Rum is one of the very few rums actually made from scratch in Cornwall. It starts from creating a wash from sugar cane molasses,

which is then fermented before it enters the stills. This rich sweet earthy liquid is then heated gently up towards 80°C when the magic of distillation takes place. A pure white rum comes out of the still which is then poured into oak barrels to age for many months to develop taste and colour. Their great tasting drinks have been recognised by the Taste of the West awards where the team received four golds and three silvers in 2022. So what’s next for Copperfish? The team have taken on an additional premises on the quay that will be developed into a visitor centre where tours, tastings and makings will be open to the public. However, if you can’t wait until Spring 2023 when it’s due to open, why not visit the shop and bar or check out their website for more information.

INSPIRATIONSurrounding

John McKinstry has spent the majority of his career working within the realms of horticulture, which took him to diverse corners of the country and inevitably inspired his paintings over the coming years. From the gentle rural fields of his home counties of the Sussex downs and Wealds, to quaint Cornish harbours and dramatic south-west moorlands, all are landscapes which have helped shape and inspire his work to date, and ultimately provide him with a chance to do something he now cannot be without. Art.

Although John has not received formal artistic training, he spent many years dabbling in watercolour, a medium he never felt completely at home with. It wasn’t until he switched from watercolour to acrylic that he found the spark that was missing from his work. A connection was formed. It is a medium that John finds forgiving, textural and ideally suited to his style, allowing him the freedom to create his soft, gentle skies and vibrant textured foregrounds with ease.

Over the years, John’s paintings have evolved in style but the inspirations never change; the constant draw from nature is evident. His paintings evoke a feeling of calm and quiet reflection, a feeling that is

mirrored when he paints, and one that is often commented on.

John first started exhibiting locally in Cornwall before the opportunity arose for his work to be displayed to a larger audience at a gallery in Glasgow. It was during this time that his art was spotted by one of the UK’s leading art publishers and distributors. This turn of luck gave John the nudge that he needed to realise his dream of becoming a full-time artist, with the aim of supplying high-end galleries across the UK and internationally, and now, he has a large number of collectors in both realms.

In September of 2022, John made the leap and became an independent artist, allowing him a more flexible lifestyle and a more hands-on approach with the collectors of his art. His work is now available directly from his website, as well as a few hand-picked galleries, all of which you can discover on his website.

A trip down the cobbled paths of memory lane to glance behind at the rich and fascinating histories of some of Cornwall’s most treasured gardens.
COVER FEATURE 48 | CORNWALL LIVING

We all know the story of The Secret Garden; a hidden gem long forgotten, discovered by chance, fallen in love with and brought back to life to be kept a secret no more. What you may not know is that there are ‘secret gardens’ all over Cornwall, lying in wait for their next visitors to push open a door hidden by ivy and fern and step into a world of vibrant colour and eager growth, each bursting into bloom for the summer. Lost to the brambles of time for almost 80 years, the gardens of Heligan’s 200-acre estate had long been forgotten after the gardeners who carefully tended the ever-expanding collection of exotic flora were sent to the trenches of World War I. Out of 14, sadly only four would return. While this would be a story to dismantle many of the large estates throughout Britain, Heligan was different in the way that the gardens were never sold or developed, but left to slumber under a veil of ivy and thorns for decades, waiting to be discovered. Today, visitors can stumble upon the Lost Valley with its enchanting ponds and exquisite wildflowers, carpeted with bluebells in the spring. A peaceful home to both wildlife, ancient trees and the traditional practises of coppicing and charcoal burning.

Since 1659, Heligan was the ancestral home of the Tremayne family, who lived in the manor house. Incredibly, it is still owned by the same family, having been passed down to one of the descendants, John Willis. On 16th February 1990, he accompanied Tim Smit in a discovery that would change their lives forever, uncovering The Lost Gardens of Heligan. Stumbling upon the remnants of what was to be known as the ‘Thunderbox Room’, they came across a motto etched in pencil on the wall – 'Do not come here to sleep or to slumber’ – alongside the signatures of the lost gardeners, signed August 1914. “It had brought the garden alive for us, real people had led real lives here, and we now knew some of their names. It felt at once like a shared intimacy and an invasion of privacy. We could not ignore it even if we wanted to,” Tim explains in his book The Lost Gardens of Heligan. “We were fired by a magnificent obsession to bring these once glorious gardens back to life in every sense and to tell, for the first time, not tales of lords and ladies but of those ‘ordinary’ people who had made these gardens great, before departing for the Great War.” Today, Heligan represents 200 acres of paradise for the explorer, wildlife enthusiast, plant lover and garden romantic, and with Victorian gardens,

pleasure grounds and even a jungle to entice you, you can expect a unique experience all year round.

“The history of the gardens of Cornwall, great and small, is unique and remarkable,” explains Sir Robert Owen, Chairman of the Cornwall Garden Society. “It is the story of passionate horticulturists, the owners of gardens and their gardeners, who took full advantage of our wonderful climate and landscape, and, so importantly, introduced many wonderful plants from all over the world. The story of the intrepid plant hunters associated with Cornish gardens – sent out to roam the world in search of rare plants, and successfully propagated them in Cornwall –is fascinating, and made a very significant contribution to horticulture in the UK. We, the Cornwall Garden Society, can claim some insight into the historical importance of the Great Gardens of Cornwall, having ourselves been in existence for over 120 years, and enjoying a close relationship with many of the gardens.”

Another historic Cornish estate with gardens and grounds worthy of our admiration can be found at Cotehele. Having been the ancestral home of the Edgecumbe family from 1353 to 1947, the gardens here have been carefully developed since the 16th century into the thriving utopia they provide today, with the Woodland Valley garden being a charming late Victorian addition. Spanning 14 acres of gardens and 12 acres of orchards, Cotehele's garden is unique and varied all year round, but a visit in summer is particularly enchanting. The borders in the upper gardens become a myriad of herbaceous plants and colourful flowers, while the terraces burst with hydrangeas, roses, geraniums and irises. The 19th century saw a boom for local

industries, and Cotehele Quay would bustle with busy vessels loading and unloading cargo. Paddle steamers made their way upriver to see the Tamar Valley’s famous blossoming orchards of Cotehele, which are still there to be enjoyed today. Preserved by the Edgecumbe family as a historic talking-point, rather than a comfortable family home, Cotehele is now in the hands of the National Trust. Built in medieval times, the current house is mostly Tudor and is full of stories about the family who owned it for 600 years, with an expansive garden cultivated over hundreds of years. Cotehele invites explorations of the formally planted terraces, adventures in the Valley Garden amongst the medieval stewpond and dovecote leading down to the River Tamar, or tranquil wanderings in the Upper Garden around a pond of red and white water lilies.

Over in Penzance, the incredible and extensive collection of sub-tropical plants that you’ll stumble upon if you find yourself walking the winding paths of Morrab Gardens have been accumulated over many years. The original planting in the 1880s was a result of gifts from local estates like Trengwainton, Trewidden and Tresco after Penzance had become a popular seaside resort and demand for a recreational park became apparent. Upon holding a competition to design the

park, London designer, Reginald Upcher, won the prize of 20 guineas with his plan for the three-acre site. The original design, which included a bandstand and sub-tropical garden divided by a series of curvilinear walks, is still much in evidence today.

When the park opened in 1889, the Gardeners’ Chronicle wrote: “One of its features is a Palm-grove, where tourists may fancy themselves in the tropics or on Mediterranean shores.”

A significant role for the gardens was the study of acclimatisation of rare sub-tropical plants, a tradition which continues to this day. “But the importance of the major Cornish gardens is not simply historical,” Sir Robert Owen continues. “They continue to play a role that is both important to Cornwall and to horticulture more widely. Not only are they such a wonderful resource for those of us privileged to live in the county, but they rightly continue to attract visitors in vast numbers, thereby making an important contribution to our local economy. Secondly, they are a living phenomenon. Whilst many are of considerable age, others have been created or restored within recent times, most notably the Eden Project. Thirdly, the gardens provide a bank of experience of horticulture, which will be invaluable as we begin to address the effects of global warming.

“They also provide an important training ground for those, young or old, seeking to pursue a career in horticulture, a resource supported by both practical and academic courses, and facilities for research run by academic institutions, such as Duchy College, Rosewarne and Eden Project Learning. I have no doubt that as we adapt to climate change, now accepted as happening by even the most diehard of sceptics, the role of Cornish gardens and their gardeners will be as great and as important for the future as it has been in the past.”

FINDING a balance

After what can only be described as a difficult year, Dr Joe Stolte continues to work as Medical Director for MEDfacials and the Rapid Health Test.

Over the last few years, Dr Stolte has further developed his knowledge in nutrition and food intolerances, something he has been interested in for some time. After speaking with clients and working as a GP in Cornwall, he has been able to better understand how living with food intolerances can affect someone’s day to day life, and in a variety of ways.

“Sometimes,” says Dr Stolte, “the body can have or develop difficulty in digesting a certain type of food, or group of foods – this is known as a food intolerance. The problem is that, unlike food allergies – which are an immune system response and often cause severe reactions – the symptoms of food intolerances vary considerably. So much so in fact, that it’s possible for a person to be suffering without even understanding why they are experiencing their symptoms in the first place.”

The most common food intolerances in the UK are dairy, gluten and caffeine, and I am sure we all know someone who suffers with such an intolerance. The symptoms

for these can range from stomach pains to rashes and bloating. It is always advisable to consult your local GP if you suspect that you could be suffering, as they will be able to explore your diet and symptoms further, and the team at Rapid Health Test are on hand to help.

Dr Stolte explains that whilst it’s possible to live with a level of food hypersensitivity for some time, in the case of some food intolerances, the body does reach a saturation point. This means that even if you have no symptoms at all, your body’s ability to absorb vitamins, minerals and nutrients from other foods decreases; your body is fighting the wrong foods by attacking the intestines, which in turn damages the lining of the intestines, minimising and eventually removing your body’s ability to absorb what’s needed. You can find out if you have a pissible food intolerance by ordering one of their at home finger prick tests with a free 30 minute consultation, and a generous discount code of 'Premium20'.

 BELOW Global Boarders preparing for the next session

To step outside our front door and feel the warm promise of spring on our skin as the days grow lighter and the sun more familiar is to remember the joy of living in the paradise that many of us are lucky enough to call home. Painted in greens, blues and sandy golds, and edged with cliffs embellished with heath and thrift overlooking the Atlantic ocean, Cornwall not only makes for a wonderfully inspiring place to be, but holds the key to real adventure in what we consider to be one of the most beautiful places in the world.

In the spirit of immersing ourselves in the watery wilds of Cornwall this spring and summer, we thought it best to get an insight from someone who not only harbours a passion for the thrill of the Cornish coast, but has made a career of 17 years from it. From nurturing surf newbies on their first waves at Praa Sands and Gwithian Towans and coaching advanced salt-water thrill seekers, to exploring the coastline on a coasteering exploration around Mousehole, Chris Brown is a man at the very heart of outdoor adventure. Leading a team of over 12 surf and coasteering coaches, Chris is at the centre of a company that invites all to seek their very own outdoor adventure; Global Boarders.

“My first memories of the outdoors were spent on the crowded beaches of Southendon-Sea,” reminisces Chris. “Like many families from the southeast, Cornwall was a yearly family holiday destination and I recall catching my first waves at Gwithian on a partially snapped polystyrene bodyboard in the mid 90s. My parents made the brave move to leave Essex and relocate to Cornwall. Ever since then I’ve been drawn to the energy and natural beauty that can only be experienced in the great outdoors. As a first-generation surfer in my family, it took until the age of 16 before I learnt how to surf and two years later, whilst balancing education, I qualified as a lifeguard and surf coach and never looked back. In 2005 Global Boarders was formed and 17 years later my passion to coach surfing has never been stronger.”

Originally a mobile surf school run by Chris and his best friend Steve, Global Boarders’ original ethos was to travel Cornwall’s coastline in the search of the best waves for their clients to surf, operating out of a van with surfboards strapped to the roof. “We did this all year round and it was a common site to see us in the winter months battling the Cornish weather whilst wrestling the surfboards on and off the roof,” explains Chris. “We realised this was where our passion lay, and 17 years later best friends became business partners and we’ve grown the business to proudly have beach front bases at two of Cornwall’s best surfing beaches; Gwithian and Praa Sands.”

Having managed and coached the GB National Surf Team from 2015 to 2019, Chris found himself in the driving seat of some incredible opportunities that would lead him around the world to the shores of California, The Azores and Japan. On his return, Chris’ newfound skills and experience found their place within the Global Boarders team at the head of an incredible group of hand-picked instructors and guides, each chosen for their individual skills and experiences: “My role as head coach allows me to proudly lead a team of wonderful coaches and great friends in delivering two amazing activities in surfing and coasteering across some of the most spectacular locations in Cornwall. We believe that we have the best team of instructors and guides possible, and to provide an unrivalled customer service we have hand-picked each individual to fit a certain roll within our coaching team. Ultimately, whether you’re local or just paying a visit, our aim is to leave you with a lasting memory of our special county and ensure it’s one of the highlights of your holiday.”

From primary school teachers who work with the kid’s groups during the school holidays, to more senior coaches who support some of Global Boarders older customers, many of the team have been around for ten or more seasons, so they really know what they’re doing! What’s more, Chris and his team see many budding adventure seekers return to them year after year with the knowledge that the coach they’ve had previously is more than likely

there to coach them again: “We find that most return customers when booking their session will ask whether they can be taught by the coach or guide they had during their previous session. As a company, we put great emphasis on retaining our staff, with many being with us for at least five years, so the customer and coach relationships can progress with many students working with the same coach for years. We also renew our equipment every two years, which means our customers always enjoy warm wetsuits and a great selection of beginner and advanced surfboards.”

Striving to be a fully inclusive operator for outdoor activities, and with a desire to promote the endless health and wellbeing benefits of being in the Cornish sea, Global Boarders are the lead surf school provider in Cornwall for working with local schools, encouraging local children to access the incredible outdoor environment that awaits them whilst promoting ocean safety and awareness. Not only this, the team are also proud to run a not-for-profit surf club for local children from beginner to elite level, many of which have gone on to represent England at international events. Their work with the military charity Surf Action and the Wahine Project UK (a year-round initiative for young girls to learn how to surf, look after the ocean, each other and themselves) only goes to show how dedicated Chris and the team are to the local community and the art of outdoor adventure. 58 | CORNWALL LIVING

With an offering of beginner, improver, advanced and private surf lessons from Gwithian and Praa Sands for all ages, and group and private beginner and advanced coasteering adventures from Mousehole and Praa Sands, Global Boarders take a hands-on approach when it comes to experiencing Cornwall’s coastal playground.

“Cornwall is the furthest southerly county in the UK and benefits from especially mild winters and long warm summers,” Chris muses. “Whether your passion is for land or water sports, Cornwall is a year-round destination for outdoor adventure and not just a summertime holiday location. Cornwall’s core lies with its infinity with water sports, and with a coastline that stretches for over 250 miles and with over 300 beaches the options for adventure are truly endless. Cornwall’s highlight adventure activities include surfing, coasteering, kayak and SUP tours and rock climbing, and as the first point of land from North America Cornwall’s stretch of Atlantic ocean is famous for being crystal clear, attracting more marine life than any other part of the UK. It’s not unusual to see whales, dolphins, seals, basking sharks and bluefin tuna. There truly isn’t anywhere better in the UK to experience the breathtaking thrill that comes with immersing yourself in an outdoor adventure. There’s nothing like it.”

Whether it’s discovering the rush of catching your very first wave where ocean meets shore, or finding out just what it feels like to throw yourself from the rocky cliffs that border the land into the briny sea under the watchful guidance of a qualified thrill seeker, the possibilities afforded by Chris and his team at Global Boarders are entirely endless, and I believe that Henry David Thoreau couldn’t have put it any better: ‘You must live in the present, launch yourself on every wave, find your eternity in each moment. Fools stand on their island of opportunities and look toward another land. There is no other land; there is no other life but this.’

CELEBRATING SOUND

After two years of radio silence in the world of live events, the summer of 2022 is set to turn the volume up and bring us back to days of dancing in the sun.

COVER FEATURE 60 | CORNWALL LIVING
Phoebe Fox (Boardmasters Festival)

The world has felt pretty quiet lately. Cancellations and postponements of the festivals, live music events and cultural celebrations we so looked forward to, while necessary, certainly put a dampener on our hopes for the summers of 2020 and 2021, and the road from that very first lockdown has certainly felt like a long one. However, with restrictions easing and the proper precautions in place, this year is well on its way to pulling an absolute showstopper out of the bag, and Cornwall is right there amongst it all. From local celebrations of food and culture to one of the biggest music festivals in the UK, we’d like to take you on a journey through the light strung trees to some of our favourite Cornish festivals as the sun comes up on the summer of 2022.

Home to a wealth of cultural arts and a fiercely proud heritage, here in Cornwall we love to celebrate our local traditions and histories, and the Falmouth International Sea Shanty Festival is an excellent example of how we like to showcase local talent whilst welcoming friends from all over the world in celebration. Founded in 2003 with a mission to keep the history of the sea and the days of sail alive, the cobbled streets of Falmouth’s historic town will once again find themselves filled with the rousing sound of sea shanties, songs of the sea and Cornish songs, all performed live throughout the weekend. Spread across from Friday 17th to Sunday 19th June, and featuring pop-up bars and music stages throughout Falmouth town, you’ll find shanty groups drawn from across the UK, Brittany, Holland, Spain, Canada and Ireland who’ve come together in celebration of all things nautical.

On the north coast of Cornwall you’ll find another Cornish town that plays host to an annual celebration of art, food and music; the Rock Oyster Festival. Set in the stunning grounds of Dinham House, and overlooking the Camel Estuary, this festival celebrates one local delicacy in particular, as the name suggests. Each year thousands of oysters are eaten as visitors and locals alike celebrate the famous quality of Cornish seafood. With cookery demonstrations, children’s entertainment and even a ‘shucking’ (oyster shell opening) competition, taking place from 29th to 31st July, this year’s events are hosted by Jack Stein, who has gathered famed foodie names like Rick Stein and Rosemary Shrager to share their culinary expertise. Meanwhile acts like Laura Mvula, Happy Mondays and Passenger are sure to have you up and dancing like it’s 2019. What could be a better way to mark the fifth year of The Great Estate festival than with a special four-day celebration over the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee weekend? Self-proclaimed as ‘the most rambunctious garden fête’, this year’s celebrations took place once more at the charming Scorrier House, and boasted headline acts at Stage on the Green such as Manic Street Preachers, Black Grape and Ibibio Sound Machine, while fresh new talent made waves on the BBC Music introducing stage. While frequenters to the festival were sure to find familiar sounds, there was no shortage of new curiosities to happen upon this year, including the new Earth Roots world music stage.

For any lover of Cornish cider, sun and good vibes, the Little Orchard Cider and Music Festival is certainly the festival for you. Located within the beautiful grounds of Healey's 150-year-old working cider farm in the rolling Cornish hills, where the famous Scrumpy Rattler and even cider whiskies are created, this will be three days of music, activities and a whole world of fun for the entire family. Taking place from 9th to 11th September, festival goers will be greeted by tractor and trailer and chauffeured through the farm to the festival area, where live music from local acts and international headliners will be keeping everyone entertained all day and night, while a selection of ciders from all over the UK can be tried alongside delicious street food. Famed for its wonderfully weird activities, events like Grandma’s Sofa Derby and the Rattler Olympics are sure to put a smile on anyone’s face, and the Silent Disco in the Orchard will keep the party going into the early hours.

Leopallooza is the festival that began all things Wyldes. Originally an attempt to get some friends together to listen to and play good music, now Leopallooza Festival is a multi-award-winning, grass roots music festival that celebrates the very best in new, up-and-coming and established bands, artists, DJs, and comedy, as well as hosting immersive theatre, family entertainment and a whole heap of surprises. Hosted in The Wyldes, a bespoke festival site which is nestled in a hidden, tree-filled Cornish valley, just a few miles from the sea, Leopallooza will take place from 22nd to 24th July, bringing with it live music, comedy and family entertainment for all, with acts like Metronomy, Sleaford Mods and Lianne La Havas to get those feet moving in the sunshine.

The shine of the Mousehole harbour lights

BELOW  Magic is all around on Montol Eve

Any winter stay down here in the Duchy would not be complete without a visit to a local town or village that will undoubtedly be celebrating the arrival of the festive season in its own way. At the top of the pile with a light display that draws people from all over the county every year in December, the Mousehole Harbour Christmas Lights switch on is a truly unmissable event. Now a treasured tradition that goes back to the 1960s, when local artist Joan Gillchrest strung coloured bulbs along both quays of the harbours to brighten up the village at Christmas time, the Mousehole lights have come a long way. Taking weird and wonderful forms, the lights depict more than the usual festive symbols; a serpent and a whale can be seen almost floating above the glittering tide, while a stargazy pie shines against the harbour wall. Once more the village will begin the staggered switch-on on the 12th December, with all lights shining bright by the 17th, so you’re sure to catch the event!

If you’re in the area for the festive season and find yourself longing to return to Mousehole, Tom Bawcock’s Eve on the 23rd December is certainly one for the diary. Reminiscent of an old local tale, it is said that the residents of the fishing village were starved during a stormy winter, when eventually fisherman Tom Bawcock set out into the waves, returning with a bountiful haul and saving the village. From then on, in his honour, stargazy pie has been cooked and eaten on this day. Pubs come alive with warm fires and live music draws anyone wandering the streets inside as locals celebrate with an evening of fun in gratitude for the food on their plates, and for men like Tom Bawcock.

If age-old tradition and old Cornish folklore tickles your fancy during your winter visit to a place rich in history, and

you’re within reach of the Penzance area, The Montol Festival is not something you’ll want to miss. Run by the Cornish Culture Association, this six-day arts and community festival celebrates the midwinter solstice, Cornish midwinter traditions of the past, and customs associated with Old Christmas, all culminating in Montol Eve on the 21st December.

Through the week there are a host of activities; lantern and mask-making workshops, strolling bands, carol services, and, of course, late night shopping! During the main event on December 21st, the people of Penzance take part in many of the traditional Cornish customs of Midwinter and Christmas, including Guise dancing with traditional masks and ‘mock formal’

costumes. Several fire beacons are lit throughout the town, leading up to the chalking and burning of the Cornish Yule log and the dancing that follows. With a theme of ‘light and darkness’, everyone is encouraged to unite on the longest night of the year in defeating the darkness and celebrating the annual return of the light.

Whilst December may bring with it nights that can feel endlessly dark, and frosty days to nip your nose and encourage hibernation, there is also a sort of magic that only comes along at this time of year. You might see it in the glint of a bauble, or the shine of twinkling lights strung over heads in woolly hats, or perhaps in the smiles of those around you, come together to celebrate something special and unique. Wherever it comes from, you’re sure to find magic in Cornwall this Christmas, if you only know where you look…

BAITING FOR hope

In a bid to share a healthy mindfulness in difficult times, Justin Keight explains why fishing is so much more than just a hobby at Tight Lines.

EXPERIENCE

Why do people go fishing? The answer is quite simple. Anglers have unlimited amounts of hope. It is this hope that soon becomes a focus that evolves into a habit, which makes way for an incredibly wonderful pastime. Justin Keight, founder of Tight Lines, is one of those anglers full of said hope. An experienced fishing guide within his own outdoor adventure business, Cornwall Adventures, Justin envisaged a way of teaching people a key life skill whilst helping those that are struggling with mental health. Thus, in the summer of this year, Tight Lines was born.

The main focus of this community project is set on those of adult age who are experiencing difficulty and issues with mental health, including PTSD, anxiety, stress and depression. Through regular meetings and angling workshops, Tight Lines brings likeminded individuals together, learning and sharing new skills, whilst creating its very own angling community.

If you’d like to be a part of this amazing opportunity to seek hope and reacquaint yourself with mindfulness, or you’d just like to find out how you can help, make sure to join Justin at Tight Lines’ Kick-Off Meeting at Wendron Football Club (TR13 0EH) on 16th January at 7.30pm, everyone’s welcome!

Tight Lines is a Cornwall based nonprofit Community Interest Company, providing mental health support to the people of Cornwall, using the wonderful sport of fishing as the vehicle. Sea angling from the magical Cornish coast can really help boost mood and mindfulness, as surrounding yourself with nature has been shown to have a positive impact on mental wellbeing. Focusing on your rod or float, as well as striving to improve your fishing skills, helps to relax both your body and mind.

The project will also look to work alongside and support a range of Cornish businesses creating fundraising events for Tight Lines and other worthy local causes through feast nights and happenings throughout Cornwall. If you are a business and would like to work alongside Tight Lines to help to improve the lives of the people living in Cornwall, make sure to get in touch. This social project is more than just a fishing society. It’s about bringing the community together and helping as many people in Cornwall as possible, using our biggest ally – the sea.
